Truly untouchable!!!!! I Dare another rapper to touch this!!!! Black Thought goes too fucking hard on this track!!!! It's The Roots!!!! Nobody's fuckin' with em!!!!
Illadelph Halflife is my favorite Roots album -- by far. It's smooth, dark, jazzy, hardcore, very chill, & has unbelievable flow and lyrics....and of course actual live instruments are being used, as always.
And for some reason this album was pretty nostalgic the first time i even heard it.
Don't get me wrong though, i love all their other albums, especially their other old stuff like Organix, DYWM and TFA.
nas and the roots are both top notch. originality, technique, lyrically, intellectually. also, rakim was mentioned. there were others mentioned, but these 3 are the ones that jump out as the legitimate top hiphop/rap artists. not puttin others down, but these 3 are comparable with each other and not the rest.
and being able to play instruments isnt their best strength. it makes them actual musicians. they are one of the major innovative groups of recent history
so is big l, he ripped "went to hell for snuffing jesus" off of nas, sad people don't know real hip-hop but based on popularity they draw conclusions of supposed supperiority.
The Roots are not part of the diluted rap scene; they are a total and complete sentence and a scene all by themselves. Don't compare them to Nas; give me a break. Illadelph Halflife: a true original work of art. Time will tell...
@jose4891 I'll take Illadelph over Illmatic, which to date is Nas' best work in my opinion. Both are true originals, but as far as the actual music goes, The Roots take a backseat to absolutely nobody in Hip-Hop, ever...EVER. As far as rhyming skills go, I'll take Black Thought over Nas, Aesop Rock over Nas, Rakim over Nas, Metaphor over Nas, GZA over Nas, Redman over Nas, Big L, Busta Rhymes, Mos Def, Percee P...I could go on a bit further, but I won't be disrespectful. I'm a Nas fan.
@eldudereeno77 I respect your opinion fam but you're really coming off as delusional, talking like your word is the rule. I mean you just said to me, that Aesop Rock, Metaphor, Redman, and Bustah Ryhmes were better than Nas. Sorry but there isn't an arguement that can be made to support that. I'll agree, the Roots don't take a backseat to anyone music wise, but that's a pretty comfortable statement to make don't you think, since their forte is their live instrumental band.
Nobody in hip hop has the unique sound of the Roots. This album in #1 all time for me because the Roots made a fuckin hardcore album without samples just nothing but great instrument playing by Questlove and the other members of the band.
@TheTKCreborn nice one. This reminds me of my first year after dropping out of school....lazy summer dayz, chocolate thai and the roots....aaaahhhhhhhhhhhh
@lyricsfromsweden No, not really, MATW, Illmatic, It was written, Liquid Swords, etc are all legendary hip hop albums. I doubt those two albums are better.
@kennboy1 - Yeah, I have to say that "Illmatic" and "Me Against the World" are not only two of the greatest Hip-Hop/Rap albums ever recorded, but one of the greatest albums ever made. Period.
How I feel about these artist who kept true with their musical creation within the art of Hip-Hop during the past 15 years?Teach kids what real music is when it comes to hip-hop.Kids have had hero Emcees that are not MCs and had favorite rappers that only have talent in rhyming words. The game has been controlled by High Powers since the beginning, but I know who are the true artist.Teach about the true Rappers and Emcees with real talent and flavor to kids.To Hell with most of 2day's Radioplay.
@hhhaaaccc IMO this is their greatest album, not only with this song, but also "What They Do" and many other legendary tracks.
Easy to forget that some critics panned this when it came out. What the fuck were they thinking? Also, for all the talk in the hip hop community about appreciating conscious hip hop, the album sales never matched the praise. Maybe this is why they are reduced to playing house band for Jimmy fucking Fallon. No respect...
WOW!!! Philly in the house word up... 1996 I guess hip hop is dead. besides the illuminati has all the souls in the game. How sad when you listen to this amazing lyrics by Black thought with the EAST COAST Production.
@DaanOFF321 this is definatly roots sickest album... very underrated in my opinion atleast round here nobody knows this shit black thought also very underrated mc though... for real in my top 3
@shahizo Storch was a big part of the roots, but if im not mistaken he didnt play on this song. Kamaal handled the keys and hubbard played bass on this one.
By far one of the best in my Roots playlist
