I am right now reading David Harvey's 'A Brief History of Neoliberalism' in which Harvey lays out the histroy of the so-called "free market" revolution that has defined economic life in America and the world since the 1970s. That the two men in this video parrot Fox News sound bites about a "free market" and unregulated business "fixing" America's economic ills speaks to the efficacy of conservative propaganda more than it does to any understanding of actual economic history.

initially, it is clear that they have no grasp on the economic situation, but it turns about 2:30. The government doesn't have the right to prevent bonuses, whether or not they are right. Also, their bit about the welfare state creating dependent citizens has some validity. While 95% of Americans without health insurance are hard workers (some working 2 or 3 jobs), socialistic programs always carry the risk of dependency. Just because they aren't political scientists doesn't mean the're dumb

The risk of dependency? Well 45,000 Americans without health insurance die each year for lack of affordable health care, often from preventable diseases. I've spoken with many Canadians and I've several friends in England and they laugh when I ask if their health care is a awful as it is made out to be on certain "news" stations. These two are idiots regardless of any accidental sense they might have made for a moment. I think the risk you mention is well worth taking.

for the record, I am a proponent of universal healthcare. The point I was trying to make was that these men can't be dismissed as "idiots" just because they dislike big government. While one could certainly point out that the American corporatocracy poses a much more dangerous threat to their freedom, they are certainly not stupid. Misinformed? yes.

Not that you really care I'm sure but here is where I got it: The Harvard study, funded by a federal research grant, was published in the online edition of the American Journal of Public Health. It was released by Physicians for a National Health Program, which favors government-backed or "single-payer" health insurance. That's up significantly from a 2002 study that found 18,000 died yearly from lack of coverage. You can google the Harvard study and find right wing disagreement I'm sure.
