he burns a lot of energy but does no hits at all. His moves don't seem to be actually ofensive at all. If that's how he fights, even a ordinary person can kick his ass.
However, seeing this as an artistic exebition, he is preety good at it.
I saw the number of dislikes on this video, and was prepared to berate some annoying ass, MMA wannabe fools who think traditional martial arts are shit. But after seeing this, I tend to favor the dislike bar. I'm not saying it wasn't good. It was very good, with a great deal of talent. But it lacks so much of the traditional art that it really can't even associate with it anymore. Almost every time I've seen kata like this in competition against traditional kata, traditional wins out.
I don't care what you people say about martial arts becoming more about show than actual self-defense. True, the self-defense part is crucial, but you have to realize that these people probably know more self-defense than all of you combined, and they now have time to work on the flashy and showy part of their skills. This guy's form requires so much skill and discipline that no untrained person would be able to achieve. Kudos to the person who did the form, seriously.
No hara. No kime. No Shizentai. No good stand at all. No focussing on the opponent. Just artistic noodling around. This may be helpfull in a John Woo-movie, but it is far away from the japanese art of sword-fighting.
@kaifinn in the eyes of someone like you... i'm sure it is. the point to martial arts is to be open to all aspects of it, the extreme martial arts is just another branch that derived from its ancestors. To be some blatently one sided to something jus means you need to grow and broaden your horizons... i appreciate all forms of the martial art from the extreme, to the traditional to the full contact aspects, from kung fu to karate, bjj to sanda. skill is skill and it takes skill to do this

It is cool to watch but not meant to be used at all in a real fight. John is a very good martial artiest and he may or may not know real swordsmanship. If all you want to see if real swordsmanship then look up videos of iaijutsu and there competitions. Just enjoy it and if you don’t like it then move on.
I want to agree with the commenters... however, I will say this - this is a forms demonstration at a martial arts tournament. All the judges care about is showmanship. So lots of fancy moves, pointless overly dramatic kiaaaiiis and of course acrobatics. And yes, I guarantee this guy would freeze up and die quickly in an actual sword fight. Still, gotta respect him for his ability to entertain the crowd with his sword juggling.

He is a real katana master as you can see by his ability to control the sword to the best of ability's. The meaningless twirls were for show. Some time people think there smart but really there just "want to be's".

his grip on his blade is too loose. you simply cannot twirl like that without potentially a slip. there's uneven power in his strokes, no grace in his movement. the guy's about to trip over himself and the grunts demonstrate even his breathing is wrong. breathing controls your rhythm and timing. what you see here is a mickey mouse entertainer, just being honest

He is a real katana master as you can see by his ability to control the sword to the best of ability's. The meaningless twirls were for show. Some time people think there smart but really there just "want to be's".

@Lolhatestorm Anybody who has studied traditional Kendo will know the katana in an extension of the arm. It is to he wielded with respect and the movements precise and clean. I see none of that in this video.
