If professional female athletes want the same money, etc., as male athletes, then they should be able to compete with them on the same teams. I am totally in favor of complete equality in sports if teams were not separated at all by gender.

Title IX isn't just about sports, it's about educational opportunity. It's one thing to talk about equality in pro sports, while WNBA players are underpaid I don't think anyone expects them to make Kobe money. But in college it should be equal.

My point is that sports are necessarily sexist and discriminatory - that keeps men off of women's teams (which is a good idea). However, the best should be paid the most. i loved this video! as a girl, i did not understand why the female athletes had to be pictured nude or with children but i sure as hell did not like it. of course,now i know. sexually available plaything or wife and mother.nothing wrong with the wife and mom part but these women are athletes and should be shown in clothes shooting a ball or sprinting down a track.

On page 179, Wood states "Jenny Thompson posed nude in Sports Illustrated, a resoundingly clear declaration of her femininity. She was followed by other female athletes, such as Katarina Witt and Brandi Chastain, who posed nude or nearly nude."
I don't think women have to do sexy photoshoots to make a name for themselves. Having said that, I do think that their career does benefit when they do(not that I believe it should). Also, women's sports do get much less coverage than male sports but I'm not sure that it has anything to do with a bias against females as much as female sports haven't been around as long to find it's audience like male sports.
ps. Even if they do take sexy pictures so people don't think they are lesbians doesn't mean they all do it. One super model does crack doesn't mean they all do it.

A lot of what we find attractive or "more flattering" is influenced culturally. And most of the gender gaps are a reflection of culture rather than the way they would be without influence. women = x men = y is a set of rules we as a society created. We are physically build to judge very quickly by appearance (which isn't necessarily good or bad) and categorize.

But if you look a little bit deeper, these sexy photos that males are taking are enhacing their masculinity by showing their strength and muscles. The photos of women on the other hand are showing them laying down or in vulnerable positions. Take a look at the video "sexualization of female athletes." It is a wonderful representation of this.

I think it's good that we're separated only because biologically, men ARE stronger (in general). I'm a feminist and I played sports for a LONG time, but I disagree with you here.

Most people would say that athlete A is better than athlete B if athlete A can win a majority of the time against athlete B. That's why most people say male athletes are better than female athletes (and I agree with them), because male athletes will win against female athletes in any sport simply because they are bigger, faster, and stronger. The idea of embracing femininity is rooted in how our society has equated feminine with sexual. Although men and women have different biological and physiological differences, women athletes should not have to use their sex appeal to get noticed as an athlete. A woman in 2008 might be a great athlete, a great cook, and "hot" but that should not mean that the media the should photograph her wearing nothing but an apron, holding a soccer ball in a pair of high heels? This is true, its not ok. However, its all about what people want to see. I may be generalizing here, but more men take interest in, and watch sport. Sadly given that men are 'better' (not sexist, based on factors such as muscular composition, genetics, physiology etc) athletes than females, it is only natural that this larger audience will want to see male sport: as the portrayal of dominant female athletes is, in a way; a challenge to their masculinity, and is intimidating to some extent.
It is interesting that there are not women's sports on the "girlie channels" or that there are many women that do not support women's sports. The root cause is embedded in our culture and norms...generations worth of accepting that women are not "as good as" men. The notion of allowing women to vote was once since as crazy so it isn't surprising that there is still a struggle to change beliefs and values that are reinforced by the media.
My stance is simple... pound for pound and by design men are stronger than women. If you would ask me who should plow the fields I would pick a male to do it. Men are just better suited. Have there been woman that can beat a man in a sport? Sure. But it still doesnt change physiology. Men have upper body strength. Women have "mother hips" and thats the lot we have been dealt with. Who can do more push ups? Who can run faster? Men are physically, in terms of sport related activities better than women. How about the 99 womens world Cup? Why when there is a noise down stairs the man by his own volition and the womans adamant request will investigate the matter? Im a bgirl (female breakdancer) and because bgirls are much more outnumbered by bboys its really interesting to see how people react to a girl breakdancing. It takes a strong mentality to resist a lot of the stuff people will tell me.
I think there are two aspect playing a role here. One is that indeed society seems to reject the idea of displaying female athletes sweaty, dirty and and without makeup, no doubt that's a sad limitation to their freedom. The other very crucial aspect however is demand. Just like in motor sports, it's all about being the number one, and the male body happens to be more athletic than the female one. So the audiences go for the best of the best, the idea of participation/community play little role.
Sports coverage is not a government sponsored public service, it's a business. The money goes, where the audience is. So the only way this business is interested in females is the field where they can make money off them, which is sexual attraction of the (surprise) largely male sports audience.
To change this, women have to watch sports, not protest men celebrating sports.
For the same reason Linux isn't as widespread as we'd like it to see: politics aside, it didn't convince on its own.

The NFL, NBA, and MLB all interview male athletes when they are naked in the locker room and display unwashed, sweaty bodies in full view of your living room. This is objectification of men. Yet, those same commentators who appear on this video have no objection to that.
Compared to black men, white men suck at basketball... and sprinting... and practically all sports. If we're going to be sexist, why not get our racism on too?
Maybe we can just say that yeah, we do treat women differently in the media, especially sports.

Title IX isn't just about sports, it's about educational opportunity. It's one thing to talk about equality in pro sports, while WNBA players are underpaid I don't think anyone expects them to make Kobe money. But in college it should be equal.

My point is that sports are necessarily sexist and discriminatory - that keeps men off of women's teams (which is a good idea). However, the best should be paid the most. We need to fight sexism with the same tools used to fight racism. No more "separate but equal" segregation of womens sports. I don't want our daughters being told that they are the fastest "girl". Have , for instance, a track team with a dozen or so slots, and allow all students to compete for those slots, regardless of sex. An equal footing for all. It will make the tiny handful of remaining women athletes better respected for being able to compete with men.

Let's think about this. Men are men and they are wonderful, strong, competitive creatures. All their hormones and internal wiring make them this way for a reason. Watching sports let's them participate vicariously in something that is an outlet for those feelings that need to be expressed.

I don't think women have to do sexy photoshoots to make a name for themselves. Having said that, I do think that their career does benefit when they do(not that I believe it should). Also, women's sports do get much less coverage than male sports but I'm not sure that it has anything to do with a bias against females as much as female sports haven't been around as long to find it's audience like male sports.

A lot of what we find attractive or "more flattering" is influenced culturally. And most of the gender gaps are a reflection of culture rather than the way they would be without influence. women = x men = y is a set of rules we as a society created. We are physically build to judge very quickly by appearance (which isn't necessarily good or bad) and categorize.

In the book she states " Male athletes and coaches of men's teams continue to have more support, financial and otherwise, than female athletes and coaches of women's team. Playing a professional sport is a career... it may not be a traditional career like what your thinking of... nevertheless, it is a career. Why well obviously because women dominate the world of fashion. We need to fight sexism with the same tools used to fight racism. No more "separate but equal" segregation of womens sports. I don't want our daughters being told that they are the fastest "girl". Have , for instance, a track team with a dozen or so slots, and allow all students to compete for those slots, regardless of sex. An equal footing for all. It will make the tiny handful of remaining women athletes better respected for being able to compete with men.

As far as sports media is concerned, it's a business. The government doesn't fund these forms of media.
Unless you get all female athletes to unionize,or agree to set standards with interviews/photo shoots I doubt we'll see much progress.
Furthermore, isn't this issue of sexism is a bit specific?
Why not go after the major companies that create unrealistic representations of women with features only possible through extreme surgery, or Photoshop?

I for one would love more women to attend to sports, because to be successfull you need to shed your genderrole of victimization and aknowledge your own part, and in doing that learing, and getting better.
Ofcourse there are some arguments about why media give men and women equal coverage in this aspect, the major ones beeing that the male sports are (for now) bigger sports, more money, more participants, more established.

Most people would say that athlete A is better than athlete B if athlete A can win a majority of the time against athlete B. That's why most people say male athletes are better than female athletes (and I agree with them), because male athletes will win against female athletes in any sport simply because they are bigger, faster, and stronger. This video misses the most obvious point, that the whole purpose and drive behind sport means that the sportspeople who receive the fame and adulation are the ones who are best at it.
Since - in nearly every existing sport - the best men are better than the best women, it is a natural consequence of the nature of sport that they get more coverage.
No-one's interested in the fastest-human-being-with-fair-hair, just the fastest human being. A man.
It's not a gender issue, it's a sport issue.

The idea of embracing femininity is rooted in how our society has equated feminine with sexual. Although men and women have different biological and physiological differences, women athletes should not have to use their sex appeal to get noticed as an athlete. A woman in 2008 might be a great athlete, a great cook, and "hot" but that should not mean that the media the should photograph her wearing nothing but an apron, holding a soccer ball in a pair of high heels? This is true, its not ok. However, its all about what people want to see. I may be generalizing here, but more men take interest in, and watch sport. Sadly given that men are 'better' (not sexist, based on factors such as muscular composition, genetics, physiology etc) athletes than females, it is only natural that this larger audience will want to see male sport: as the portrayal of dominant female athletes is, in a way; a challenge to their masculinity, and is intimidating to some extent.

It is interesting that there are not women's sports on the "girlie channels" or that there are many women that do not support women's sports. The root cause is embedded in our culture and norms...generations worth of accepting that women are not "as good as" men. The notion of allowing women to vote was once since as crazy so it isn't surprising that there is still a struggle to change beliefs and values that are reinforced by the media.

My stance is simple... pound for pound and by design men are stronger than women. If you would ask me who should plow the fields I would pick a male to do it. Men are just better suited. Have there been woman that can beat a man in a sport? Sure. But it still doesnt change physiology. Men have upper body strength. Women have "mother hips" and thats the lot we have been dealt with. Its not sexist at all. Only the media projects this "liberal" image of the facts while they neglect basic science.

I think there are two aspect playing a role here. One is that indeed society seems to reject the idea of displaying female athletes sweaty, dirty and and without makeup, no doubt that's a sad limitation to their freedom. The other very crucial aspect however is demand. Just like in motor sports, it's all about being the number one, and the male body happens to be more athletic than the female one. So the audiences go for the best of the best, the idea of participation/community play little role.

Sports coverage is not a government sponsored public service, it's a business. The money goes, where the audience is. So the only way this business is interested in females is the field where they can make money off them, which is sexual attraction of the (surprise) largely male sports audience.
To change this, women have to watch sports, not protest men celebrating sports.
For the same reason Linux isn't as widespread as we'd like it to see: politics aside, it didn't convince on its own.

Here is what I am absolutely certain of: I think it is more healthy for women to look to fit and healthy female athletes as role models rather than stick-thin and eating-disorder-plagued supermodels and actresses.
At least women have a healthy image to aspire towards. Women will be seen as sex objects for many years to come, certainly within my lifetime. It is not right, nor am I saying that I am not guilty of thinking that way. But, there are changes to be made.
