  • You ever notice that the front part of their spacesuits is a muffin tin?

  • what a beautiful way to die..like a fallin star <3

  • Trippy as hell.

  • Ah, this brings back memories!

  • one of the smartest productions ever

  • Shit man and i thought youtube was invented sometime the previous decade...

  • How is it that this is a prototype for ALIEN

  • @MegaSlashProductions During the movie they chase an alien through the vents - the director would later use this in the movie Alien

  • @Fr0st1989

No, not really. One guy vent into an elevator shaft to try and get to an alien in dark Star, hardly the alien chase through the vents in the Alien movie. Also, the director of Alien was Ridley Scott, not John Carpenter. ;o)

  • @wright9342 No, but both films are written by Dan O'Bannon

  • ....epic...

  • So sad... :'-/

  • this movie is great hahahahaa 9 seconds...

  • I too will glow in the feenix stars one day.

  • A very sad ending, but otherwise it was beautiful to see how their dreams became true :)

  • Easily one of the best movie endings of all time. Carpenter always had a nack for great conclusions to his creations. Thanks for posting and letting me remember this moment of cinematic art! And remember " the days seem so much kinder when we watch them you and I"

  • Woooooo

  • this is one of my favorite ending of any movie yet made! such a feel-good ending that it's difficult to admit that everyone dies or is stranded in space at the conclusion. it makes me smile everytime that doolittle starts to surf his last wave

  • it's a sad ending coz they all die

  • Carpenter has mentioned that Bradbury's "Kaleidoscope" was a major inspiration; i don't think it's really close enough to warrant a story credit.

  • 3:29 so funny

  • At the end where the bomb explodes and the two men drift apart, one go's with the astroids and the other into the planet sure reminds me of a Ray bradbury story called Kaleidoscope,or did I miss that in the credits?

  • @hanalei169 i know its been a year since u watched this but yes. carpenters ending was payin homage to the bradbury story. its a classic.

  • PRICELESS

  • I saw this couple of years back when I was going to school for film. Excellent movie. Always loved that ending.

  • Benson Arizona is the song at the end.

Sad to hear Dan O'Bannon passed away on the 17th dec 09.

  • What's the name of the song in the end?

  • I knew Calvin (Boiler) during the last year or so of his life. He was a frequent customer of a coffee house in Worcester, MA , as I still am. Robust burly man - wore a fur coat, had a BMW convertible, and a wonderful dog named Buddy - he tied him up outside and we'd all bring him treats. He picked me up one day as I was waiting for the bus to do laundry. He got me high on the way, bless him. When he blew into the coffee shop, he always made an impression. He went in his sleep...may we all.

  • aite. how does he hit light speed when "surfing" into the planet lol an y was he taken away by a set of lights?

  • Apparently, those were thetans from the Scientologist belief.

  • The closer he gets to the planet the faster he'll fall due to the gravity. He suddenly accelerates and burns up as he enters the planets atmosphere.

As far as being taken away by a group of meteors is concerned I don't know. But those are special asteroids.

  • The Pheonix Asteroids took him with, and the other guy surfed into the planet... burning up in the apnosphere.

  • @recaulkulous - the last word of the book adaptation by Alan Dean Foster was "Wipeout."

  • This film is amazing.... Beautiful.

  • Doolittle: It's the skipper.

    Captain: Men? Men? What happened?

Doolittle: Yeah, the skipper was always lucky.

  • ;( That was BEAUTIFUL, the film industry is truly dying, why dont we get great films like this anymore

...all we get is Megan Fox and explosions ;(

  • @othonor explosions have been in cinema sense the beginning, there is no way to escape them. and i dont remember megan fox in star trek, district 9, terminator salvation, iron man, minority report, avatar, dark knight, revenge of the sith, lord of the rings, or any movies like that. you need to watch more movies

  • @othonor Ironic in a way considering that this movie ended in massive explosion, but I get your point

  • I just understood what someone had put in a newgroup reguarding the chances of the 'Columbia' astronauts surviving once the crew cabin had disentigraded. Someone else had typed something along the lines that they could have grabed wreckage and shielded themselves from the heat. The first person typed something like "What was McCool going to do? See the wreckage falling with him and say, "I think I have figured out a way"". A little morbid, but I understand his reference now.

  • Time for a new, remastered version with commentary with Carpenter, O'Bannon etc. Come on Criterion collection, get on this!

  • amazing movie. carpenter is a genius. The Thing and Dark Star have amazing end scenes.

  • They don't make movies like this anymore!

  • this reminds me of a short story I read years ago, does anyone have an idea what this story might be? I can't remember anything else

  • You're probably thinking of Ray Bradbury's "Kaleidoscope."

  • yes that's it, Thank you, over 10 years I found the story again

  • Ive only just noticed this film has a george lucas reference, it says on a piece of debris "toilet tank THX 1138"

  • Frozen corpse drifts off - The skipper always was lucky - an excellent ending

  • This is one of my favorite movie endings of all time. It's like the ending of Gilliam's "Brazil"... on the surface it seems like a dark ending because the character dies, but it's really a happy ending because he goes out fulfilling a dream and getting exactly what he wants.

Despited the crudeness and cheeseballery of Dark Star, I think it's a far better work from Lucas than the last 3 Star Wars films... it's intelligent, not formulaic, and has a real sense of humor.

  • that is the point he did die!! He went on about how he loved surfing and missed his board. This kind of satisfied his longing in a sad death kind of way.

  • It's a comedy.

  • I think, even Kubrick was absolutely convinced that this would have been a much better ending to for "2001".

  • ha ha ha... well done sweet as

  • I find it amusing how at ease they are about dying.

  • I think they take dieing lightly because they've been in deep space for 20 years. This has left them loopy and separated from reality. On top of that death is a change from the monotony of 20 years on Dark Star.

I love how they only see the beauty of their deaths.

  • While I was watching this my wife had Beyonce's "Halo" playing in the background. I laughed that much harder. Someone needs to do a mashup.

  • I still think its the best movie carpenter mad. When i saw it when i was like 15 years old it did blew my mind. And actually it added to my desire to learn surfing.

  • It's amazing what they achieved for 60.000 dollars, great sets/suits/fx and a brilliant eye for detail!

  • Let there be light.

  • if 'beyond dark doo doo' is what you have to say about this movie, i assure you, beverly, that you are not a 'big sci-fi movie watcher', as you childishly (or stupidly, if you're an adult) like to put it.

  • "Yeah, Skipper always was lucky."

    Lol. Favorite line.

  • ROFL yeah I laughed my ass off at that line when I first saw this... the first one to get killed...!

  • "Caution Thermostellar Device" I always laugh at that.

  • I saw this when it first came out. It was so great then, versus now. Us hippies had a freedom of thought and sense of humor that is sorely wanted today. We were thinking of things that our parents considered beyond our years but have come to pass. A black president, a woman Speaker of the House. Global climate change, clean air/clean water. All of these were from 40 years ago. America has always had a culture more related to the liberal agenda than the conservative..Thank God.

  • Blowing up an atomic bomb is the best way to end a movie.

  • A very tragic ending. But so beautiful in a way.

  • ...gives me the "hippie" era feeling.....fantastic movie....so comical too. ...."I'll circle the universe, I'll be back this way someday" the guys last words as he was being taken away by the Phoenix cluster (you have to put your ear right next to the speaker cus his voice becomes very faint) . Beautiful movie, i watch it over & over.

  • Fiat Lux :)

  • "what a beautiful way to die... as a falling star"

  • Love Dark Star, proof that you don't need a massive budget to make hilarious sci fi.

  • This film got me interested in making movies along with Trumbull's Silent Running. They were on really low budgets and I seem to remember this was actually a student film...Brilliant "Let there be light!"

  • Do you like Red Dwarf?

  • This classic movie clip deserves wayyyyy more hits and ratings.

  • This is truly a great movie. And I have always loved "Benson Arizona"

    Thanks for the post.

  • Man, I haven't seen Dark Star in over 20yrs...thanks for posting this

  • I love that ending, especially the dialogue with the bomb.
