We used to have one of these gorgeous machines, and let me tell ya something. It washed far better than the junk they're trying to pass off as washers today, with their high efficiency this and high-efficiency that. PfffffT! Please.
Awesome looking machine! Kenmores get clothes cleaner than any other...especially when vigorously agitating.....common sense. End of story! TY for posting!!! :-)
There are two new videos by revvinken demonstrating the adjustments of the Vari-Flex agitator on his 1970 Kenmore, one with high water level and high speed, and the other with low water level and low speed.
Wow, Kenmore machines during this era had a weird pernament press cycle, they drain the machine almost out of water, and gently agitate and fill the machine back up with water...which is odd...I specifically recall as a kid a similar machine from similar era doing the same exact thing....
@Compwhiz128 The cool down process was changed c.1976, when they Kenmore introduced both the black paneled washers and the dual-action agitator. It started with a high-speed drain for about 45 seconds before pausing, then fill with cold water at the next notch of the timer, and resume agiation at high speed instead of low. This process was not repeated. The spin speed would still be low.
@Gaygarious You pull up on the center of it and rotate it to Hi, Lo or anything inbetween. It extends or retracts the bottom vanes of the agitator to suit how vigorous or gentle you want the washing action to be.
Damn good washer my mom had this same washer lasted a long time still could of been repaired but they chose to get a new one, nothing compared to that kenmore. Oh yeah love the sound of the custom care cycle!!
A message for jons1077...could you do a request and make a video of setting the controls and starting the wash cycle? I have nostolgic memories of my grandmother's old machine when I see this done.
This washer is by far the best I have ever seen...looks like the one my grandmother had years ago. I would love to get my hands on one of these classics. By far they were the best ever made.
My grandma had this exact model but hers was the brick color. I remember I replaced the lights on it and the matching dryer. She said she forgot that they even had lights on them! I have looked for years to find this. If you pull up on the agitator and spin it the vari-flex pulls the agitators in and out depending on how much agitation you wanted. The bleach and softener dispensors on hers did not work as they had little plungers that opened at the right time but they has rusted up. COOL!
this machine is very cool. I keep hoping I find an old belt drive kenmore or whirlpool for sale in my area. I have a direct drive machine built by whirlpool and realy don't like it.
I remember those "puke yellow" agitators. I never understood why they chose that color. Blue or green or something related to water would have been better.
I see that your lint filter works only in the first few minutes of the cycle. Does it shut off automatically, or did you shut it off by hand? BTW LOVE that orange piece you put in there!
The bleach dispenser releases when 4 minutes are remaining in the wash cycle. Softener is released into the outer tub immediately after the first spin is complete.
That is not the lint filter it is the detergent dispenser and the dteregent dispnser shuts off automatically during the last few minutes of the wash cycle. The lint filter in this model is self cleaning and it filters the water automatically during the wash AND rinse cycles.
This washer is crazy cool. My Grandma used to have a Lady K 800 with the same VeriFlex Agitator. Hers had the "woo-woo" constant sound during operation. You should do a Normal 14 load starting with an empty washer and then adding the clothes once operating to show fill-up and it's full speed operation, drain and spin. Also a shot of setting the knobs and the VeriFlex would be cool! What a cool washer! Wish I had one like it! Hold on to it...it is priceless!
what is that knocking sound? That knocking is not normal, My 72 LK does not have that knocking sound on agitate, only the slight hum of the motor running
I would suspect that THAT was coming from the Vari-Flex Agitator. One other person on the club recalled commenting about that VERY issue with his 1970 Lady Kenmore about a year or two ago.
No "woo-woo" sounds is exactly right. This is the ultra-quiet belt-drive design. My understanding is a different pulley and more narrow belt were used to reduce mechanical noise. It is an extremely quiet Kenmore.
That's the truth. Now I know what a 1970 Lady K sounds like. Being that the 1970 Lady K and your Kenmore Model 900 are very close together, how your Kenmore Model 900 sounded, that's probably how a 1970 Lady K sounded as well. Both, your machine and the Lady K had a Quiet-Pak system built into the drive mechanism.
Sorry if you thought I was disapointed with this washer I actualy think it's really cool especially how quiet the drain cycle is, and the unusual permanent press cycle, the nice agitator, and the control panel. I'm really not disapointed about the lack of woo-woo noises, I was actually amazed about it.
Did you use fabric softener for this load as well? And if so, what brand?

Why do some top loading machines drain the water out before they spin, and others just start spinning with a full tub of water??

Not to mention the series of four 7-second spray rinses during the first (low-speed) spin.

How does that agitator work? I see that there is a dial on it.

The Vari-Flex has 4 settings. This video I had it set to the second most gentle setting.

NVHSChadSheppard1 2 years ago
To be honest, not very fast, but couldn't tell you exactly. This video shows the slow spin speed.

Well, I gues that a good spin for a kenmore.

What you're referring to is actually the detergent dispenser. It does only recirculate for a couple of minutes.
jons1077 2 years ago
How come the dispenser (for softener) doesn't flow at the start of the rinse agitation?
tvtimetravel 2 years ago
The bleach dispenser releases when 4 minutes are remaining in the wash cycle. Softener is released into the outer tub immediately after the first spin is complete.
