I may be called a dumbass, but for the life of me I cant read what everyone say. What I can read is "L -- real 3441". For me the "is" looks like "ka". I know thats not any better, but thats how I see it.
L is real 2401 really does referer to Luigi. If you read the text below L is real 2401, it says: In Paper M. Paper Mario was released on Febuary 4th, 2001, and luigi was in that game.

it looks to me like it says - "L is real, start up your Ds" as in The Ds remake of super Mario 64 that DOES have luigi in it, I know this one doesn't because super smash bros. (64) says he isn't in it i know luigi is in super mario 64 (Ds) because I unlocked him,

People have spent immense amounts of time trying to figure out which one it says. I think it's both. The statue is of a star, so it's obviously Eternal Star. But the L is real date wad probably hidden there. They probably meant fir you to think it said eternal star while the release date of Paper Mario was secretly hidden there.

I think the people did put the "L is real..." because L is for Luigi but the L on the plaque states to Mr.L's first appearance in Paper Mario. Thats why they Mr.L in PM. Thats why the released date was in 2/4/01 (1 day longer). Thats why they put scribbles on the plaque!

@Eaglesharp97 Textures in Nintendo 64 games are blurry for a reason, it makes it possible to depict something larger using a smaller resolution, such as large amounts of text on a small sign. Take a look at any signpost in Ocarina of Time. It is blurry and illegible, which means the same texture can be reused for every single sign since it could say anything.

@Aticze We run into several problems with that theory. For one, the Nintendo 64 does not have an internal clock and cannot keep track of what day it is. There would be no way for it to know it is April, nor any way for the user to input the date, meaning that when April 2nd, 2001 arrived, the Nintendo 64 wouldn't have known that. Secondly, there is no model or textures for Luigi in the game, so even if the N64 could tell what day it is, it doesn't have any resources to use for Luigi on that day.
@NesKid99 you mean YOU haven't found any models or textures in the game. How deeply have you looked? Unless you are a master hacker, you will never EVER find things like this. Look how long it took for people to find Bottle's Revenge (from banjo and kazooie)
@kdreamland The problem with this comparison is that Bottles' Revenge is a game mode that uses the same materials already present in the game. It's not a matter of finding extra content, it's a matter of finding the code which is disabled by default. Luigi on the other hand does not exist in-game as far as any unused materials go.
Also if there really was Luigi models anywhere, wouldn't you think after all these years spent looking through the game's files it would have been found by now?

I think it might be japanese. The "2" looks much more like a backwards c, some japanese character? besides, the game was made in japan and I doubt they'd change the graphics for the us. After all , they re-used in in ocarina of time for the dodongos' cavern plaque.

It says L is real 2401! The L is for Luigi. And another thing I found out was that the Plaque is surrounded by ghosts. Super Mario 64 had something to do with Luigi's Mansion. And because Luigi wasn't in Super Mario 64, Nintendo wanted to tell people that a Luigi game was going to come out in exactly 2401 days. But Luigi's Mansion came before 2401 days. And Nintendo wanted us to know that Luigi is still a main character and they weren't going to cut him of games, he was as important as Mario.

luigi's mansion, which is the first game luigi starred in, was released for the nintendo gamecube in japan on september 14, 2001.
september is the 10th month of the year.
10 + 14 = 24 and the year is still 2001.
i'm just saying, it makes just as much sense as this idea, if not more.

Heres the real answer. Its some random scribbles that mean nothing, That happens to look like it says "lisreal2401". And the reason its in zelda oot is because it used the same graphic engine, so they just copied it to oot.

@colabcalub Its copied to OOT because it uses mario 64's game engine and the designers got lazy and pasted it there. As another user said, if nintendo made this an easter egg they would make it clear to read. Also I doubt they tried to make it look like letters but just random generated squiggles. But hey a better question is, who or what is burried under the star? It looks like a gravestone.

this means that luigi is real and hes in paper mario that cam out on that date however luigi is in this game if you get the DS version you can open the door that luigi is locked in this code only makes sense in the N64 version its useless now but nintendo wanted to have that to tell its fans that luigi will be in paper mario

I think it just says Eternal Star, it is a optical illusion... it says both. If it says L is real 2401 in paper M, it makes sense. But, if it says Eternal Star, it makes sense too.

2401 feb.4 2001 the realease date of paper mario (i think it was changed to feb.5) look at zelda games it also says in ocarina of time beacause there is always a mario easter egg in them like ocarina of time the courtyard where you meet zelda you can see a mario painting the fat farmer with red clothes and overalls the bowser medalion and a luigi farmer(look-a-like) and in majoras mask theres the happy mask salesman with a mario mask on his back that is the stor of L is real 2401 in paper M

I think the people did put the "L is real..." because L is for Luigi but the L on the plaque states to Mr.L's first appearance in Paper Mario. Thats why they Mr.L in PM. Thats why the released date was in 2/4/01 (1 day longer). Thats why they put scribbles on the plaque!

@Eaglesharp97 Textures in Nintendo 64 games are blurry for a reason, it makes it possible to depict something larger using a smaller resolution, such as large amounts of text on a small sign. Take a look at any signpost in Ocarina of Time. It is blurry and illegible, which means the same texture can be reused for every single sign since it could say anything.

I know what this means. I googled it, and this came out:
L is real means Luigi is somewere in the game
2401 means on the 2nd of April, 2001, you can play as Luigi for ONE DAY ONLY!

@Aticze We run into several problems with that theory. For one, the Nintendo 64 does not have an internal clock and cannot keep track of what day it is. There would be no way for it to know it is April, nor any way for the user to input the date, meaning that when April 2nd, 2001 arrived, the Nintendo 64 wouldn't have known that. Secondly, there is no model or textures for Luigi in the game, so even if the N64 could tell what day it is, it doesn't have any resources to use for Luigi on that day.

@NesKid99 you mean YOU haven't found any models or textures in the game. How deeply have you looked? Unless you are a master hacker, you will never EVER find things like this. Look how long it took for people to find Bottle's Revenge (from banjo and kazooie)

@kdreamland The problem with this comparison is that Bottles' Revenge is a game mode that uses the same materials already present in the game. It's not a matter of finding extra content, it's a matter of finding the code which is disabled by default. Luigi on the other hand does not exist in-game as far as any unused materials go.
Also if there really was Luigi models anywhere, wouldn't you think after all these years spent looking through the game's files it would have been found by now?

I think it might be japanese. The "2" looks much more like a backwards c, some japanese character? besides, the game was made in japan and I doubt they'd change the graphics for the us. After all , they re-used in in ocarina of time for the dodongos' cavern plaque.

It actually says L Is Real 2401. Under it, it says in Paper M. 2401 means 2/4/01, the release date of Paper Mario. And by L Is Real, it means that Luigi is in "Paper M".

It says L is real 2401! The L is for Luigi. And another thing I found out was that the Plaque is surrounded by ghosts. Super Mario 64 had something to do with Luigi's Mansion. And because Luigi wasn't in Super Mario 64, Nintendo wanted to tell people that a Luigi game was going to come out in exactly 2401 days. But Luigi's Mansion came before 2401 days. And Nintendo wanted us to know that Luigi is still a main character and they weren't going to cut him of games, he was as important as Mario.

paper mario was origanly to be realesed on 2/4/01 but was posponed and was realeased 2/5/01.
all that this is is a spoiler that nintendo put up there for the game paper mario.

the sprite on the statue is used for a lot of nintendo games, it has nothing to do with luigi, its just scribbled. Luigi isn't in SM64
