  • aaaaaaaaaaaand.. now i'm hungry.. ;c

Is it possible to make it from tinned chickpeas/fava beans?

  • @Mubin1983 , Some people make it with canned chickpeas , but the original recipe calls for dry, soaked chickpeas/ fava beans or the combination of both. the beans will cook when fried. I think using the canned beans would add a lot of moisture to the mix, which is not a good thing to have. good luck.

  • Fantastic!!! Love the recipe. Thanks

  • @ruiz1707 , Thanks.

  • Amazing Falafel!! What is the song used for the video? Thanks!

  • @unpancho , this is Oriental drum playing piece of music, sorry i do not know the exact name of it. glad you liked the recipe and the music.

  • falafel tastes so much better when you use fava beans and not chickpeas and also leek!

  • @bluehaven10 , of course it is delicious with fava beans too or the mix of both beans...people have different preferences i guess and that what makes cooking innovative and interesting.. variety is good!

  • @bluehaven10 Actually, Syrian/Lebanese falafel usually use chickpeas, while Egyptian falafel usually use fava beans. I actually make mine with an equal mixture of both, and in my opinion the mix tastes best as you don't get one kind of beans overpowering the taste.

  • NO FAVA BEANS???

  • @SamratalHayatGalerie , this recipe does not have any dry fava beans, but you may add 50% chickpeas and 50% fava beans to the recipe, or 75% chickpeas and 25% fava beans. you may make it with all fava beans too without adding any chickpeas to it. It is up to you. please read the full post on my blog to know more about this recipe and many others. thanks.

  • @cookingtheeasyway ... Merci :0)

  • watch my video too please, this is iranian food

  • is that a knife or a dagger?

  • @totnuckers , it is a knife that can be used as a dagger :)

  • For the people who are having them melt when frying, did they use canned chickpeas instead of dry? I did some research and it looks like if you use canned chickpeas, you need to use some egg or flour to keep it together. I bought some dried chickpeas that I have soaking now. I'm going to try this recipe tomorrow, though I'm going to try to bake to be healthy.

  • I don't own a food processor or a blender. Is there anyway to make falafel without such appliances?

  • @msbunnypaws, It will be very hard to do it! but if you have an old meat grinder the old type that works with no electricity, it should work out well. otherwise, i suggest that you borrow a food processor from one of your friends :)

    Good luck!

  • almost professional really well done i am sure the falafel came out marvelous what sauce did you make?

  • @anoxxi , Thanks! glad you liked it.

I used peasant salad, which is small diced tomatoes and cucumbers, dry mint, dressed with olive oil and lemon juice, garlic and i made tahini sauce, with tahini and lemon juice, you may vinegar instead. thanks for coming by.

  • For those saying it's melts, you should add flour before frying!

  • @eggy4u1 , i agree...but sometime people tend to add TOO much flour and the inside of the falafel will become doughy, and this does not make it fluffy and nice from the inside...a little goes a long way. thanks for your comment.

  • I tried the recepe and everything melted down ..please help...thanks

  • @dino1261 , check your inbox for the reply.

  • @cookingtheeasyway

i've got the same problem. Any suggestions?

  • Great video-looks delicious!-Thanks for this recipe!!!

  • @Amarain , You are welcome. thanks for your comment.

  • I followed all the instructions and I started the frying everything melted inside the hot pot with the oil, please let me know what to do, I left everything in the fridge to carry on tomorrow but I would like to know if I can stick everything with an egg or flour. Please help....thanks

  • @auramonicauk , please check your inbox for the reply, it is kinda long.

  • Very tessssssssssty......

    Music v goooooood

  • mmmmmmmm rico.

  • What kind of chili? It looks like a jalopeno. Correct?

  • @Schmillenium , You may use any type of chili you like...depends on how spicy you like your food. thanks for coming by.

  • HI the place is mamouns on mcdougal. I thought it would be ok to print the name since it doesn't automatically appear. Thank you again for your help.

  • @mrearlygold At the New Haven Mamouns they use sesame tahini. I love that place.

  • I like them with what I think is a cucumber sauce and some tahini ( I think ? spread on the inside of the peta bread. Can you add the recipe for the cucumber or white sauce or are you strickly traditional?

  • @mrearlygold , of course you can add whatever you like to your falafel sandwich.cucumber sauce/salad and tahini spread. but traditionally , tahini spread or cucumber and tomato salad with tahini sauce are added to falafel sandwiches.

  • @cookingtheeasyway

Is Tahini Sauce white? I didn't want to mention names but I used to live in Greenwich Village NYC many years ago and there was and still is a place on mcdougal st that put a white sauce over the top of the falafel and I really like it. My Wife and I watched your video last night, she is a vegetarian and we'd like to make these are home but I would also like the sauce. Can you share the recipe? Thank you:)

  • Is that really only 2 tablespoons of each spice? It looked like a bit more

  • @omgiitsmai , it is about 2 tablespoons of EACH spice, total of about 8 tablespoons of spices including salt and black pepper. but of course you can always modify the amounts to your liking. Thanks for choosing my video as on of your favorites.

  • why biscarbonat of soda ?

  • @estalinrivaz , usage of bicarbonate soda makes the falafel fluffy.

  • I can't find fresh parsley in my city. Would dried parsley be okay? If yes, how much should I put? Thanks a lot. :)

  • @zackismine , yes you can use dried parsley. you may need about a 3/4 of a cup or so for the amount of ingredients i listed on the recipe. good luck!

  • @cookingtheeasyway

Thanks for the reply. :) I will be making it soon.

  • 12 hours

  • I made this recipe today for lunch and it`s delicious!!! Easy and great!

I just had a problem, was difficult to give shape to the dough with my hands because it separated, I had to put a little flour, what I can do to make this not happen? Greetings from Jerez; Spain!

  • @adymayab , good! glad the recipe worked out for you.

sometimes the falafel dough becomes more moist than other times because of the onion and parsley/cilantro content in it. its good that you added a bit of flour to it to solve this problem. hope you enjoyed it!

  • Should the chickpeas been soaked over night, or just a few hours?

I usually buy myself a package of falafel mix, my excuse, I just don't have the time, working full time. But it is nice to make it yourself.

    Cooking is fun!! :)

  • @FrinzyakaTokeh, the chickpeas should be soaked at least 10-12 hours to get better results when you grind it with the other ingredients.

  • @cookingtheeasyway

    Big thanks !!

  • @cookingtheeasyway sorry, but you dont boil them after you soak them?

  • @velvetvervet , No boiling is required for the chickpeas. This is how the original recipe is done all over the Middle East.

  • @FrinzyakaTokeh place chick peas in glass bowl add spoon baking soda microwave till boiling, let that sit over night. then with hands rub the shell off. its like peeling a little shrimp. onion garlic cilantro to food processer

  • I ALWAYS THOUGHT FALAFEL was made from chickpea flour.... not wet chickpeas.... what are the SPICES that go in the batter

  • @mysticradio , thanks for coming by , watching and leaving a comment. the spices used are Cumin and Coriander, ground and whole seeds, Salt and Black Pepper. hope the recipe works out for you.

  • SO GOODDDDD!

  • Fantastic music! Fantastic recipe! Fantabulous video! Thank you so much for sharing =)

  • FOR HOW LONG DID U LET THE CHICK PEA SOAK ?

  • @dAlOO3EtNaIF , the chickpea should soak for 12 hours- overnight.

  • Yum. Lots of green in those! One of these days I will try the Egyptian type made with fava beans.

  • @yeshenna

Good, at least you had fun !

  • Looks great! Wheni try to make it myself, the balls always break in small pieces when i put them in the oil. ¬¬ What should i do ?

  • @eriathwen1303 , the falafel balls break because you might have added a little bit too much bicarbonate soda to the falafel mix before shaping and frying it. if not, i guess your oil was not hot enough or the falafel mix had a lot of moist (water) to it. ti fix this, add a leveled tablespoon of flour to the mix before shaping it, this will take care of the moist in it.

  • @cookingtheeasyway Thank you! I will try this way :)

  • @eriathwen1303 really why deap fly them anyway just lightly oil and fry like a burger

    less oil in them

  • @eriathwen1303 i never truly deep fry mine i wet the botton of a frying pan with just enought oil about the thikness of a dime then the wet mix holds together after frying one side lots of moisture leave the mix and a nice tasty crust holds it together so when i flip it over it holds together, it may actully have less absorbed oil but has all the flavor of deep frying, you must have a think botton skillet for even heat or you could accidently burn it,

  • @datzfast Thanks for sharing your frying method here...i will have to try it sometime.

  • mmmm that is look good and easy i hope i can make it soon ,thank you very much

  • thnx

  • I really liked this video. It was concise, to the point and the recipe looks simple to follow. I will give it a go tonight.

  • yummy, this looks great. I love it and looks sooo easy. I dunno why i thought it was such a hard thing to do falafel.thanks for sharing, Hugs from Saudi Arabia :))

  • Salamu alaikum, what were the seasonings (spices) you added?

  • @sajdah6 , mainly i add salt, black pepper, cumin and powdered cilantro. thanks for coming by.

  • @cookingtheeasyway ...can we add flour to bind them or they ll b ok???

  • @liono777 , yes, you can add a little flour to bind it.

  • Regards from Venezuela!!! thank you so much, I love Falafel! So I will try your recipe it looks very ttraditional... so I love that!. Sorry just one question: Do you add any garlic? Thanks a lot... looks delicious!!!

  • @Jeenymt , i do not add garlic to it just because i do not like its taste, but you can add as much garlic as you like to it. its all up to your own taste and how you like it. hope the recipe works out for you.

  • @cookingtheeasyway Thank you so much! Even without garlic, I can tell they will be just delicious... this recipe is just a winner! Keep up the good work and sharing your lovely tips ;-) Big hugs from Venezuela*

  • @Jeenymt , thanks again for coming back and leaving a comment. let me know how the recipe works out for you :)

    best of luck!

  • Nice! gonna try it now! Can you do this recipe without the bicarbs?

  • @megan89898989 , i hope the recipe works out for you. the reason i add the bicarbs to it is to help it make it fluffy and not dense. you can omit it if you like. good luck!

  • how did they manage to mix all the ingredients when they weren't any blender ?

  • @OKREDHOT ,What do you mean?? i used a food processor to mix all the ingredients!! make sure you watch the video one more time :)

  • @cookingtheeasyway Sorry, i mean in the past ! sorry english is not my first language.

I mean, for example, in the 19th century, how did people cook falafel ? especially mixing all the ingredients without a blender :S

  • @OKREDHOT , to answer your question, i think they had these manual grinding machines like the old meat grinders that do not need any electric power to work.

  • mo551085 , thank you!

  • I tried these today and they came perfect, very nice, I love MiddleEastern food We will eat the rest for lunch, served with fresh salad and lemon juice dressing and foul Bean dip it is Maltese dip called Bigilla (since I come from Malta but it is a nice combination) thanks alot and keep the good work, I will be checking you videos maybe I try some more recipes as they are very clear:)

  • @MaltaLux , Thanks for making this recipe and sharing the results! glad it worked out for you. it sounds like a great meal with fol, bean dip too. let me know if you try more recipes. best of luck!

  • damn that looks really good

  • @hiphopeveryday , thanks! glad you liked it.

  • I made falafel and when inserted them in my fryer they just disappeared??

    what did I do wrong?

  • @se3d , did you add any bicarbonate soda to the falafel mix before shaping and frying it? if you did, maybe you added a little bit too much. if not, i guess your oil was not hot enough or the fafaled mix had a lot of moist (water) to it.

  • @se3d

give a bit flower than it'll be ok, I know exactly what you are talking about! :)

  • i love his so much , its so sweet!

  • this is very falafel!!!!

  • great vid. Thanks much. U know i used to live in egypt as a kid.. and i always had those at lunch.. and as i grew up back in the U.S. i always just thought of it as green meat. I swear i thought it was this green burger that i just liked so much. I only got to know a yr or 2 ago when i got the chance to buy some at a lebanese store that it was just herbs n veggies. I guess cuz as a kid i was too busy enjoying it to ask what it was, i just knew i like my green burger.

  • @One4theworld , Thank you for your nice comment and i am glad that you finally found out that Falafel is vegetarian! It is even better than meat!! now you have the recipe, i hope you will be able to make it at home and enjoy it fresh. Have a great weekend.

  • lol.. thanks much cooki. I'll definately 1 day try preparing it n get it on vid.

  • hey mimi...if i use less greens will that still be ok??

  • gamahamoud , Yes you can use as many green or less as you want. good luck!

  • Super great vid, thank u sooooo much for sharing!!!! love the music too!

  • hesca, Thanks, glad you liked it.

  • you don't boil the chickpeas so that they have nutty consistence when they are grinded?

  • puddingkatapult, the chickpeas are never cooked in any authentic falafel recipe...of course they are cooked when the falafel is deep fried.

some new recipes ask for boiling the chickpeas before they are mixed into the falafel mix, but i have never done it this way. thanks for coming by.

  • OK we get it! mimicooks! :( One star!

  • Safet ...thanks for taking the time and effort to cast your ONE star rating!!! i believe that i deserve more!

  • what did you not like about the video ?

  • Looks delicious! :P

I wonder how they taste, when made in the oven - to avoid oil.

    Helpful answers welcome!

  • TheInvinciblePixel, I have never baked Falafel, but you can try and let me know how they taste! :)

i feel that they will be dry baked, unless you add a good amount of oil to them, to the bottom of the pan and on the top.

  • Thanks for your reply! I will experiment a little with them - do them flat and round, and use a brush to oil some. Delicious experiments... :)

  • TheInvinciblePixel...thanks! make sure to share the results with me.

  • great to see, a pro at work!

Why is the Bicarbs needed? for what purpose?

    Thanks

  • the Bicarbs are added so the falafel stays fluffy and airy.

  • Oooh kay, thanks again, Love Falafel!

  • falafel para todos yo pago

  • nice drums :D

  • Both times I've tried to make falafels they completely fall apart when I try to deep fry them. Any advice would be much appreciated!

  • Please check your inbox for my reply. good luck.

  • I have tried to make falafels twice, and both times they've fallen apart when I try to deep fry them. Any advice would be much appreciated, I'm about to call it quits on falafels and what a terrible shame that would be!

  • thanks for answering,im full syrian too by the way.

  • This recipe is fabulous. I've been making it from mixes for the past 25 years and followed your recipe this weekend and it came out great! Thank you for posting this!

  • Meirasmith, thanks!! i love hearing feedback about trying out my recipes...i am so glad the recipe worked out for you...its easy and much better than the mixes out of the box. :)

  • whats the music called in the begining, very good durbekah solo

  • The music at the start and at the end is a song by a Syrian/Armenian singer , Lina Shamimyan. you may google her up, she has lots of free downloads. thanks for your comment.

  • My grandmother used to make me these before she got too sick to move around much. Although I don't quite remember her using so many green veggies. Heck if this wasn't fried I would almost think it was like a health salad or something lol.

  • this is a tested recipe and it works very well...even with so many greens ( there is only parsley and cilantro..well, onions too). and frying it brings out the great flavors...although not healthy but this is the only way to cook it..it is enjoyment food. :)

  • It is not the healthiest thing in the world but its a hell of a lot healthier than most of the junk people eat.

What I havent seen before is cooking the chickpeas on a skillet with onion before, how long did you do that for? with oil? ill try it next time. what does it do?

  • I am sorry, but i do not understand your question...are you asking about the frying process of the falafel? it takes few minutes only until the falafel pieces turn brown in color but not burnt...make sure you turn them over to cook on the other side as evenly as you can. i hope this answers your question.

  • sorry i didnt understand at first, i thought you were cooking the chickpeas with onion on a skillet at 1:30 because the chickpeas look dark in color. The ones ive used have never been so colorful unless i peel them. So i thought maybe you toasted them, but I guess you just put them in a bowl

  • :) Thanks for getting back to me...all the ingredients are raw, only cooked after i grind them and shape the falafel by frying in a deep fryer. thanks for coming back and leaving a comment.l

  • @jaykia

There are two main stream ways of making Falafel, this way of using lots of greens in it and the other with very little, and then again each family will have it's own particular mix.

  • And can I bake them instead, and if so for how long, temp?

  • I never tried them baked, but you can try and let me know...i imagine you will get the taste right but they might turn dry, or the middle is not cooked all the way through. let me know if you bake them :)

  • The store bought versions I have tried baked, and werent bad.

I know deep frying gets a lot of bad rap nowadays, but its been proven to be quite healthy (as long as good oil is used, and you dont deep fry high starch foods like potatoes, cause its theory now is "its cancerous" :-(

  • frying IS the only way... soon you will want to steam them... then its will be dim sun rather than falafel.....

  • you can bake them but yes they do turn out dry I know from personal experience if your not into the deepfrying thing you can shalow fry them this wroks verry well too or you can use cooking spray hope this info helps

  • How long did this take?

  • Do you guys and girls think it will sell good in pizzaria?

  • Yes, I love Falafel, and if you have a lot of health concious people who are vegatarians, or vegans

And or Indians whose religion forbids them from eating meat

And just people who LOVE IT, will buy it. Maybe small sample with each order?

  • not good in a pizzeria

  • Fly, you are welcome! :)

  • did you used chikpeas with out poiling it?? does it work this way??thanks alot

  • Loolz9, you should not cook the chikpeas..you only soak them overnight. it works every time. and you are wlecome.

    :)

  • MrMemo, of course you can leave the coriander seeds whole...it is up to you however you want to use the spices and flavoring in the recipe...after all, you are the one who is going to eat it :)

    enjoy!

  • merci :)

  • salam

this has got to be the easiest and good video about falafel i have seen .plus the music is good!

    5 stars for you

    thnks for sharing.

  • hi,

thanks for doing this this is by far the most authentic way of making falafel I have come across ... I really missed this and now I can make this every week thank you .. keep up the good work

  • Thanks rajul for your comment, i am glad you liked the falafel recipe. thanks for coming by too.

  • thank you for the recipe and my husband likesit. i make it almost three times a week, i do the الفلافل or الطعمية almost the as yours with little different in the amont of cumin and coriander ,and little of onion , but i use baking bowder instade of baking soda and i tried it before and it teasted very bad ,can u tell me how do u use it?

  • thanks DODY for your comment on the falafel video.i have never used baking powder with it, how does it come out? i use only a teaspoon of baking soda with the patch i am frying to eat, mix it well and then fry it...it gives it a little fluff and crunch. maybe you used a big amount when you made it?
