I agree the stereo really sucks! I heard 10 speaker audio and thought this should sound sweet, but I was WRONG! However, its a very nice car and there is always room for aftermarket improvements.
ppl who drive deisel do so because they find it difficult to afford petrol. i thort america was a kool country, with the muscle cars, v8's, but they drive diesel too!!!
wow i love this car. not enough people know about this new disel technology and the word needs to get out there, now. cost isn't a problem with the tax credit and savings in fuel. the one and only compplaint i have about our 05' is the sound system, easily upgradable. the engine is powerful and quiet for a diesel, but i understand the 09' is even quieter, has more power, and gets better mileage. i also hate how they say the epa is 38 city and 40 something highway. i get 45+ city and 55+ highway
I love this car, it is a blast to drive! I've had mine for less than a week. The torque is amazing and great fuel economy too. Yes, it does have glow plugs.
so, think getting a diesel engine will save you money? it will. but look how much. 2006 volkswagen jetta (150hp 2.5l i5 engine) 30 mpg 14.5 gal tank = 435-mile range $3.81/gal gasoline = $55.25 full tank $55.25 / 435 miles = 13 cents per mile 2009 volkswagen jetta tdi (140hp 2.0l i4 engine) 40 mpg 14.5 gal tank = 580-mile range $4.35/gal diesel = $63.08 full tank $63.08 / 580 miles = 11 cents per mile thanks to diesel price-gouging, your savings equate to $0.02/mile.
What many people fail to understand is that a hybrid diesel defeats the cost to weight to fuel savings ratio. Just adding the battery pack, a spare engine and the electronics to back it up creates a price tag people would walk away from in favor of the gasoline variant. The diesel power plant in the VW is already 5k over retail of the gasoline model.
Primum is 2 K over gasoline for Diesel, and that will either pay itself off over the lifetime of the vehicle in fuel savings or, if you decide to sell the vehicle early it will pay itself because the Diesel will have a 15-30% better residual value than the gasoline version.
Right now there is a $1,300 federal income tax credit too, so narrows almost all of the difference between the gas engine and the diesel. Also, the extra money is compared to the base gas engine, the high model gas engines (2.0T) were about the same as the diesel engine in price on the 2006 TDI.
What a very nice car! Why doesn't VW come out with a Jetta TDI hybrid diesel? Why is this diesel engine not available in the United States? With the Jetta 40/60 mpg, & the massive number of people ditching their SUVs, why isn't VW jumping on this cash cow? Are the Arabs bribing the VW execs too?
UCSDEngineerDoctor: Why doesn't VW come out with a Jetta TDI hybrid
Modern diesels are much more expensive to make than petrol engines (high pressure fuel pump, sophisticated injectors, double flywheel, costlier service+lower reliability u get for free). In EU Golf TDI never pays off over the life of a car compared to Golf TSI. Hybrid parts would rise the price with little MPG gain
> With the Jetta 40/60 mpg
Fake numbers. True average MPG in Europe drivers get is 38 (Spritmonitor)
have they gotten more reliable?

What's the point of talking shit?
Edmunds Insideline tested the 2009 Jetta TDI and they got 35 MPG on their observed combined cycle.
Quoted data from Spritmonitor is 38 MPG for a Jetta TDI 140HP (14 drivers) and 36 MPG for a Golf TDI 140HP (104 drivers).

Yes it does, but they heat of in less than a second. Maybe 10 seconds if it is negative degrees outside.

are there glow plugs or a cold start aid?
s172mch 3 years ago 2
Yes, but I never see them come on for more than a second in Phoenix. It has to be really cold for them to stay on longer than that.
