  • Yeah that´s sucks that Jag don´t have music, but least you can change weapons with keypad. I don´t know if Jag Doom have save feature. I never play original Doom, but at flea market i found Ultimate Doom for PC. My PC is dead and i can´t test it. I have Doom on netbok that has mouse look like today shooters, made by Absolute Zero i think. Now i know that works on Win 7 with any problem and is even better than PS1 version and music is good too.

  • Ah now i remember that enemy do fight each other in PS1 version.

  • What do you think for PS1 version? Wikipedia says that is PS1 version the best selling game after PC release. How accurate is that info i don´t have a clue, but is damn good and i like that creepy music. Only downside is that terrible password system.

  • @prulcan Yeah PS1 version is great. Arguably the best but it did come out after the Jag and 32X versions and of course has the CD-ROM storage at an advantage. The music is a debate. I like the fast paced heavy songs of the original PC version and don't much care for the slower creepier music on the CD-ROM versions like the Saturn, 3DO and PS1.

  • playing first person shooters on any console sucks.

  • @Lumotaku Wrong.

  • @prulcan

mouse and keyboard rape a joypad

  • how about Doom 64 ? Thats probably pretty good eh, better than this probably

  • @joelcr250 No Doom 64 is a completely different game. Different weapons, levels, enemies and music. I don't even think it was made by ID software. It's not a bad game, it's just not really Doom. Also while better versions may have came later on the PS1 this was the very first version of Doom to be ported to ANY home console after the PC version.

  • I think I know the reason for the jaguar's sound struggles.

The GPU was able to act as a CPU but a flaw in the MMU made it so a game like doom would have to use the DSP as a CPU instead. But since the DSP controls the audio, that meant that the music had to be left out in order for it to run smoothly.

  • listen to a doom soundtrack if no music really bothers you. Great port!

  • This port is very fascinating. I love how the keypad works as weapon switching like the PC version. I really don't care if some textures are missing and they look the same. When I play it, I'm paying attention to the action. The framerate is good, graphics, gameplay EVERYTHING. With music, come on, with amenities now a days like the INTERNET, you can

  • Watching this video again and having played the PC version recently, it looks like level 'details' are missing. The pillars in the stair room in the first level, which actually has a switch on it, and the hole in that pit area. That's very strange.

  • @Snotnarok Definitely the 32x version is similar too. There's a lot of details in different textures on walls that are missing. They use the same brown walls more often so it doesn't look as diverse.

  • @MN12BIRD It's not only that but, these things had buttons near/on them, I've only seen early gameplay in these ports but I can't imagine what was removed because of these cutbacks.

  • The irony is that, despite being technologically superior, the SNES version has more "faithful" graphics. By which I mean, there's noticeable variety (Like the floor indent in the center of the beginning of the room being blue, the room with the armor in it having circuit pillars on it, etc). The Jaguar version looks technologically better but it also looks more barren and the textures tend to repeat, like ID put less effort into it.

  • do you think the 32x (other than the missing epsisodes and screend size) is a superior port? i think the colors are more vibrant and it has (in MY opinion) nice music> do you think?

  • there is music on doom for the jag its on/off on the key pad.

  • This is a game that can show off the true power of the Jag, especially when you compare it to the SNES and 32X.

  • pc and the jag version is way better

  • Your feelings seem truly hurt that there is no music, but be mad at the 3do version for having AMAZING music and horrid graphics even though the 3do was totally capable of the jag's frame rate

  • SNES sucks!

  • just to correct him on one detail the cyberdemons are present in the game but only appear late in the game and only on the the top 2 hardest levels

  • While this version runs very smooth and at a big screen size I notice there have been a lot of detail removed from the levels and there is very little texture variation. I guess they had to make some sacrifices to make it run this good.

  • yeah the first bunch of levels all look similar. It's when you get to hell that there's a lot more variation.

  • lol I love the sega cd music for the opening

  • is this from your computer or the real thing

  • This is from the real Jag.

  • @MN12BIRD The PS1 version has a better framerate, right? I actually prefer having no music than having to listen to the 32X songs ever again. But the jag seems to be less pixelated than the PS1 version.

  • It's not even close to PC version. The graphics are incredibly pixelated when an object is far away, there's no floor or ceiling textures, and the enemies only had one side so they always faced you. Plus it's missing the levels that had satanic imagery cause Nintendo is all P.C..

  • im going to have to agree with bizzaro. The Snes version was only best in the music department. The 32x was too harsh but looked, played and sounded way better. MN12Bird hit it - the jag port would have been the best if it had music.

  • i love your videos, please keep it up!

  • And Lmfao at the AVGN Jaguar (starfox clone) phrase.

  • It had only a 3rd of the amount of lvls of the PC one though.

  • Before the straight port to Xbox live yep, closest to original. Snes doesn't compare (no textures on floor or ceiling and frame rate is bad). The Jag levels were used to develop psx and saturn versions.

  • yep, but it has no music, so (as the AVGN said) put on some slayer and youre set

  • Again, brothers account. Sorry.

  • I'm not demanding anything because I know this work is hard, but I am strongly suggesting.

  • The Playstation version was released on November 16, 1995, just a month after the SNES version, so it was one of the early ports. You ought to review it, it actually surpasses the PC version.

  • Just out of curiosity how do you record your gameplay? thanks

  • Adaptec Gamebridge USB TV Tuner.

  • you havent got the game tempest 2000 for the jaguar have you/

  • Nope I don't

  • is it just me or does the 32x version look alot more vibrant? not that lloks better overall though

  • You should review doom 64

  • shorely you can give it a new sound card. Or open it and reconect stuff like with the Gesessis 3, to make the music work?

  • ive actually heard the music for the Jag version, its on youtube... if this is it, well they did us a favour by not putting the music, even 32X was better.....

  • the keypad is handy for easy switching between weapons but the no music ruins it

  • i have doom for the saturn. its a godawful version. the framerate is horrible

  • thats strange, if the Jaguar can do it fine, the Saturn should easily do it.

  • It should lol. The Saturn was intended to be a souped up 2D system with minimal 3D capabilities but when they got the specs for the PS1 the beefed up the Saturn at the last second. So it was very hard to develop for hence the crappy Doom port.

  • I remember playing this port on a friend's jag and also played Alien vs. pred both games were great.

  • the lack of music actually didnt bother me one bit back in the day. it kind of makes the game creepier to me.

  • doom for the saturn is like the ps1 but i find it loads way faster and full screen and the music is really loud but if you put it in stereo mode only one speaker works but really good

  • i dont buy ports of doom for the sake of collecting im just trying to get the best one i dont like it on the pc because of the stupid small screens on pcs if i can give you some advice dont touch the playstation or saturn ports with a ten foot barge pole well i heard the japanese saturn port was alot better but that would prolly cost loads to get

  • I heard the Saturn version runs really slow but I haven't seen it in person. You don't like DooM on the PC? Thats the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. You can't deny its the best of the best, original version! Plug your PC into your TV most PC video cards even basic ones have video out. Then play DooM on the big screen!

  • well now i know you can plug a pc a tv into a pc the version is by faaaar the best if you want my advice get the 3do version it will make you laugh so much its probibly worth it just for comedy i meen the 3do wasnt to far of the jags power really

  • yeah EVERY magazine and website called the Playstation the PSX. No one called the PSX a PS1 or PSone until the PS2 and mini PSone came out!

  • To me the lack of music in doom on jaguar ruined it for me big time, its such a shame because it is a damn good version, thats one game that i got rid of in my collection and am happy about it.

  • You forget then, on the same CD for the PSX there was the Doom port, but they also added Doom 2 and Final Doom. And it was released on the PSX in 1995. So a game with that much content released so early on in its console's lifespan just amazes me. Wow, you bought a Jaguar just to play Doom and Wolf 3D? It's a good thing my computer was powerful enough to run copies of both of them back then. How do you feel, now that you can download Doom on XBLA for 10 bucks? Feel like you wasted your money?

  • This version came out a year before the PSX version, on a system that came out a year (2 years in NA) before the PSX! It's not hard to fit 2 DooM games on a CD-ROM considering DooM and DooM II on PC are like what 8-12MB each?? I also had a PC back in the day and I played both on the PC first. I'm a collector so I wanted to pick up a Jag for the collection! I mean I can play DooM on DOS, Legacy, X-BOX, SNES, 32X... hell even on a GBA! I didn't "waste" my money JUST to play DooM or Wolf3D!

  • The PSX version of Doom is the best out of the console ports.

  • i just got the snes one 2day and the frame rate is bad and the graphics are choppy

  • Cool I just looked it up it seems Sony made a Japanese PVR machine based off a PS2 with a DVDRW and Hard drive and called it the PSX in 2003. I've always called the PS1 a PSX because PSX was the code name for the Playstation before it was released in 1994 and when it came out all the websites and magazines continued to call it the PSX. I will continue to call it the PSX as I always have.

  • Great review, MN12BIRD! I do have to agree that bad music on the 32X version is better than no music on the Jaguar version. The Super Nintendo's music has to be the best of all the ports, IMHO.

  • Oh yeah the SNES music is awesome.

  • mmmmm seems the jag doesn't have anywhere near as many games or good games as 3do. :-)

  • It doesn't have as many games as the 3DO, but it DOES have somewhere near as many good games as the 3DO.

  • Now you should review review the Playstation version. I think you'll find that the Jaguar version isn't the best version after all.

  • I was only comparing the original 3 ports that came out in 1994. If more ports came out years later on systems that came out after these games I would hope they could do better! The PSX version tho is actually based off the Jaguar version.

  • nice revew mate do u xbox live?

  • No I only have an old XBOX that I use for XBOX Media Center on my TV. I don't have any XBOX games on it. But I have DooM Legacy on it ;)

  • wow that game looks awesome for a cartridge game!

  • Nice review. No lame attempts at humor or visual gags like some other game reviewers - just straight up game play, good commentary on the game and other cool info. Keep up the good work.

  • I completely agree with you. I am a little tired of reviewers who try to be funny and try to give a good show for the casual gamers.

For serious collector or gamers, MN12BIRD's videos are always a pleasure. Also, check the Happy Console Gamer, this guy is great too!

  • So what was censored in the orther ports then?

  • ive heard someone call it a "4th and a 1/2 gen console" because it was somewhere between snes and PS1

i dont know, but it was still a failure, i reckon it was because the SNES could still come out with great games that looked good like Donkey Kong Country and Starfox, meanning there was no point in getting this (better to save up for a PS1)

  • but to be honest just cause the Jag has a faster processor doesnt make it better immediatly, in my experience a better graphics card and more ram is more important

  • the music was epic

  • Epic fail!

  • Have you had the chance to play on the Saturn & Playstation ports yet?

  • I rented Final DooM for the PSX back in like 1997 or something. I don't quite remember if it had the original music. The Saturn music I'm not a fan of. Can't change the music from the classic fast paced DooM music to this slow haunting music!

  • Try the 3D0 version, worst one of all.

  • yeah I heard the 3DO version was SLLOOOOOOOW.

  • Not just slow, but stuttery and jerky, like a badly edited stop-motion cartoon.

  • Awesome review MN12BIRD :D I like the Doom and Wolfenstein review. I might have to buy a jah myself :)

  • The music missing might have been a reason as to why the framerate and the graphics could have been pushed as high as they were.

  • Thats what someone said that they used the sound chip (sound was done on one of the two 32bit RISC chips) to do more graphics instead.

  • Hey Jake , That game makes me Dizzy .

Just picked up A 32X in the Flea Market for 3 bucks , NY's Version of value Village ,It came with the power pack but I need another wire for it , what wire and where can I get one?

  • Yeah picking up loose 32X mushrooms is easy but the video mixing cable that goes from the back of the Genesis to the back of the 32X is harder to find. If you don't get it with it's a pain. I've seen them go for the price of the 32X just for the cable!

  • What? How is the Jag only a "little" more powerful than the SNES?? Its got 2x 32bit processors running at like 4 times the speed of the SNESs single 16 bit CPU! Its like MANY MANY times more powerful than an SNES man! No its not as powerful as the N64 but once again that came out a full 3 years after the Jag!

  • The SNES could barley do a crappy version of DooM compared to this and that's with the help of the SuperFX chip 2 running at 21 MHZ (IIRC) inside the actual DooM cartridge! On its own the SNES couldn't have come close to running that version of DooM witch in terms of graphics is nothing like this version!

  • there is no sound because jag didn't want to bump up to a bigger cart size. Since it would cost more. So they cut the sound

  • The only perfect ports of the original Doom I think is the Xbox 360 version and the one in Doom III.

  • no sound?? strange, the Jaguar should have easily managed the sound given the SNES managed it well

thats a problem cause the music sets the atmosphere

so how powerful was the Jag overall, was it as powerful as a Playstation or an N64??

great reviews by the way :)

  • omg, no one turns off the doom soundtrack!

  • damn without music the game seems preety dull and boring lol

  • jaguar still failed!!!!!!!!

  • Actually, the programmers, in order to get the best framerate, used the sound chip as another prcessor for graphics.

  • the reason there is no music is because there are flaws in the jaguar hardware thats a shame it just stopped this port from being greatnes

  • ive been waiting 4 this review 4 ages = )

  • nice review

  • Some N64 games had loading times

  • amazing video & i was the first person to rate it

  • Actually, this version's missing a lot of the levels from the PC version. As far as the music goes, it's on the cart, but I'm almost positive that there was some sort of problem with the music playback during game play, so it was scrapped or something.

  • I see you already added the Jag to the intro :)

  • Great review i agree with most of the points one of my most hated is the framerate

  • I got these mixed up the one with the terrible framerate is 3D0 on 3d0 to make it run normal you have to change the resolution to make it tiny to make it run normally
