Some of this was based offa the WB Merrie Melody "Lady, Play Your Mandolin!". Things such as, a horse getting drunk and hallucinating, and the dancing waiter.
@CrustyClown11 that was piggy. he was sort of a primitive porky. wb re drew him into a less anthropomorphic pig. and when they had drawn porky they gave him some of piggy's traits f a while. so they say. i think he's porky and if not that then he's porky's bro.
the gorilla waiter was feature in the first Merrie Melody toon...Lady Play Your Mandolin. that one-two-three sidestep routine was a common vaudeville "body-mugging" used by comics to brighten up a quiet stage moment.
This is one of my all-time faves. I'm so thrilled to have just gotten this in 16MM, like new. I've been looking for it for 20 years. I'm laughing so hard I'm just about crying by the time that drunk horse spits on the piano, making it explode. Great hot jazz, too. I'd love to have seen the brainstorming session when they were working out the "plot line" for this.
I believe every generation of children would love these far more than the bland, one-dimensional trash of today with shallow to no plots. Of course, these were made for adults in the theater, but I think today's children would find them wonderful.
The gag intro was one of many made by the animators for their own amusement. They were compiled along with such classics as "Goopy" and published by Bosko Video in a series of video volumes called "Inside Termite Terrace"
The inexplicable appearance of Gandhi in the mirror is beyond random!

I wonder what Warner Brothers thought when they saw a similar looking dog (Goofy) in a Walt Disney cartoon make his debut?

I love what happens to the balloon from 5'20" onwards - very pre-Code!

I remember seeing these cartoons and old clips on a VHS tape I borrowed from my cousin when I was a wee lil' feller.

I love that there was a Tiny Toons episode with this character, along with Foxy and Roxy.

What's the name of the lady dog? I've seen her in a couple of these; she's adorable.

I found out from Rich Conaty's The Big Broadcast on WFUV that one song in this cartoon "I Need Lovin'" was composed by the great James P. Johnson

The jazz in these cartoons is absolutely tremendous--hot solos galore! I love the rendition of the 1927 hit I Need Lovin'.

When you hear "Get Happy" played way too fast - that's where the cartoon starts!
Don't know where or when the live action bit came from. Sounds kinda like Mel Blanc voicing over, so likely 1937 or a little later.
"Goopy Geer" was released April 16, 1932.

The live action part, folks leaving the building, came from "You Ought to Be in Pictures" from 1940. It had live action and animation together.
