I was working in the airport that day and as staff were waiting to board the buses from staff carpark and the plane barely skimmed the fence - a second earlier and it would have come down IN the staff carpark - 2 seconds earlier and it would have been in Hatton cross station and/or the BP petrol station. Brilliant last minute work by the first officer.

One thing I read in a previous comment about emergency exits. When you are flying 35,000 Feet, Emergency exits are sort of pointless. You have a choice of a quick death when the plane explodes in Mid Air or A Long Terrifying death as you plumet 10 Miles to the ground
What about engine failure/fuel exhaustion at 35,000 feet? Any competent flight crew will be able to make some sort of a landing and the emergency exits will be useful.
As a F/A, job well done to have eveyone out and safe..so next time you board a flight, listen to what WE have to say about your safety on board...remember your nearest exit may be behind you or in front...

Personaly i think airbus is more reliable ,It has a cleaner slate and almost every airbus works by using a Fly-by-wire system and it shows how big a difference it makes ,Sadly the 737 family has killed more than all of Airbus put together. Though id still fly BA.
As to the 737 comment, Boeing has sold more 737's than the entire Airbus line combine. so its simple math. I'd still fly BA too! They rank #3 behind FedEx #2, and Qantas #1 in terms of safety. As an Aerospace Engineer i speek of facts. 92% of crashes are cause by the pilot or a maintenance issue. Airbus and Boeing both make excellent planes
FACT: Planes with FBW controls are no more reliable than conventional, thats why the 777FBW controls can be disengaged by the pilot, whereas the airbus cannot, so in a dire emergency situation, the boeing will have better manuverability. ILMOA!! So I was off a little with the figures. First of all I think I know a little more about planes than you do. After all, I engineer them for a living. Obviously comfort is airline taylored, but the point is that in several surveys 777's were perferred over A330's is all I was saying. And the point is that Boeing has sold almost as many 737's as Airbus has their entire line! So what if i'm off a little! And it was for 76% of people who responded to the survey! Boeing has sold 7,000= 737's while Airbus's entire product line has sold 8,000+(if you don't believe me check the figures yourself), the last time i checked, 8,000 was a lot more than 7,000. Surveys mean nothing neither does it help sales, i also read a survey where most passengers preferred the A340 to the 777 cus it was quieter but yet the 777 outsold the A340, so whats the point of surveys. Another case where fanboyism gets in the way of common sense

I heard from an engineer that if 2 or more toilets on any new generation boeing aircraft are flushed simutaneously, it causes a catastophic failure of the in-flight computer system resulting in total engine shutdown and computer reboot.
A Qantas 747 recently encountered a similar problem when some foie gras clogged the sink in the first class galley thus causing an overflow above a battery/ generator system resulting in a total power failure ten minutes out of bangkok...

This was nothing to do with the Captain and his senior First officer. It is still not certain but the most likley cause is a problem with the computers. First officer Coward completed the approach but he had co-operation from the captain. The 777 has a clean slate until now ,They two most likly causes are either Problems with the computer or Fuel contamination.

The crash report was published recently. It stated that the crash was due to ice forming in the fuel lines and starving the engines of fuel.

you know you people who are bigging up the airbus are mad,what a terrible aircraft! i would fly on a 777 anyday long haul quieter,more comfatable,more room generally a nicer plane altogether!

Personaly i think airbus is more reliable ,It has a cleaner slate and almost every airbus works by using a Fly-by-wire system and it shows how big a difference it makes ,Sadly the 737 family has killed more than all of Airbus put together. Though id still fly BA.

As to the 737 comment, Boeing has sold more 737's than the entire Airbus line combine. so its simple math. I'd still fly BA too! They rank #3 behind FedEx #2, and Qantas #1 in terms of safety. As an Aerospace Engineer i speek of facts. 92% of crashes are cause by the pilot or a maintenance issue. Airbus and Boeing both make excellent planes

Mabye so but id much prefer airbus ,the fly by wire systems are more reliable and i tend to find airbus's are more comfortable and look nicer

FACT: Planes with FBW controls are no more reliable than conventional, thats why the 777FBW controls can be disengaged by the pilot, whereas the airbus cannot, so in a dire emergency situation, the boeing will have better manuverability. And 76% of travelers worldwide prefer Boeing. I do however prefer an A320 family over a 737 as far as comfort, but the 777 is the 2nd most comfy in the sky next to an A380

mmm yer maybe so but when all of the hydraulic reservoirs leak due to say something hitting the tail or wings then hydraulic systems arent going to be that reliable are they. FBW responds faster too.

Yes they can, its called Alpha floor protection and it can be disengaged. Don't know where you get your screwed stats that 76% would prefer a Boeing, thats BS, most people don't know or care about the plane they're flying on whether its Airbus or Boeing as long as it gets them there safe. leave it to a Boeing fanboy to make up nonsense like this.

ILMOA!! So I was off a little with the figures. First of all I think I know a little more about planes than you do. After all, I engineer them for a living. Obviously comfort is airline taylored, but the point is that in several surveys 777's were perferred over A330's is all I was saying. And the point is that Boeing has sold almost as many 737's as Airbus has their entire line! So what if i'm off a little! And it was for 76% of people who responded to the survey! I like Boeing Fanboy! Thanks!

Boeing has sold 7,000= 737's while Airbus's entire product line has sold 8,000+(if you don't believe me check the figures yourself), the last time i checked, 8,000 was a lot more than 7,000. Surveys mean nothing neither does it help sales, i also read a survey where most passengers preferred the A340 to the 777 cus it was quieter but yet the 777 outsold the A340, so whats the point of surveys. Another case where fanboyism gets in the way of common sense

Once again it shows that if you fly British you are safe from death. However if you fly Garuda,Pam Am, American airlines, Thai, or for that matter any foriegn airline you r risking death as soon as you step on board. Remember always fly british !!!!!!!!!

I heard from an engineer that if 2 or more toilets on any new generation boeing aircraft are flushed simutaneously, it causes a catastophic failure of the in-flight computer system resulting in total engine shutdown and computer reboot.
A Qantas 747 recently encountered a similar problem when some foie gras clogged the sink in the first class galley thus causing an overflow above a battery/ generator system resulting in a total power failure ten minutes out of bangkok...

ahh Im going on a plane to London stanstead on wed!! but I have to say the captain desearves a medal, he reduced the speed and the staff kept everyone calm and they got everyoen out and the fact he landed on grass helped.

This was nothing to do with the Captain and his senior First officer. It is still not certain but the most likley cause is a problem with the computers. First officer Coward completed the approach but he had co-operation from the captain. The 777 has a clean slate until now ,They two most likly causes are either Problems with the computer or Fuel contamination.

I lived in Turkey long enough to know all about it and even that some people in that religion will wear the same pants for a WEEK for one week out of the year and shit in them for that entire week.
