WOW ,America leads the way again I THINK NOT, the VTOL was developed in NORTHERN IRELAND in the 50's & 60's and the aircraft finally produced was the Harrier "jump"jet which was used by the Royal Air Force up until recently,so perhaps it would have been more economical to buy second hand VTOL jets from Britain.So USA show us something new, have a look outside at the rest of the world,........... yes it does exist.
All this is really, is a showplane. The Australian airforce SLATED it and the F-22. Let's face it, stealth technology doesn't matter anymore. If you have the correct equipment - like laser optics, beams are fired out at any range which detects anything in it's way. It's more accurate than radar and more effective. An RCS of 1cm may look like a bird BUT, what pilot is stupid enough to think a bird travels at 600mph+. I don't think any of them are, do you? How much has been wasted on all this?
While I wish this aircraft and its aviators well for the future, please remember that the Harrier had been doing this type of work (quite well too !) for a long time.
@cologreendragon By "this type of work" I mean "Short Takeoff" which is the subject of this video. Im not against the F35, I love nice shiny new tech - just pointing out that this isnt a new concept, its been (battle)proven in the Harrier.
@niceboy60 Ok, well I highly doubt that it's going to have it's engines pointed down long enough for it to melt the wheels. It's not like they're using the afterburners while hovering. What other faults are there?
@komodo8887 F35 is a piece of shit...sad but true. Other countries that had signed on are now backing out and it has been called by the Aussies "doubly inferior" to Russian and Chinese designs it flew against in aerial trials in Hawaii....we have been sold a lemon.
of course it is moron, powerful modern jet engines need way more room than WWII piston powered aircreaft. You are either retarded or know nothing about aviations.
This is a very short takeoff for a modern jet fighter.

@DreadnoughtMetal2006
You should call the military suggestion hotline and tell them. You clearly know better than they do.

@komodo8887 F 35 is a lemon
.
Visually is stunning
.
for anything less is useless one design fault after another
.
Even Exhaust burning temperatures on the wings are sent directly to its own wheels

@2012GST Lockheed did purchase test data from Yakolev, but the 141 uses a lift engine, not a lift-fan.
