Technically, you are not bad at all! I am sure you are now MUCH better!! To get what I mean, let you try and (dance) the great Polish National Dance (Polonaise :P ) on this tempo you are playing! Chopin was a great patriotic person and we see this in his wonderful music! Technical imperfection are the last thing I look for in a video. It is a question of style, sound, and syncopation! All the best in with your piano playing. and I am by no means a professional musician! Greetings from Kuwait!
This is you first recital? And you are playing a Chopin Pononaise? You should be pleased as punch!!! It also looks to me that you are not 90 years old, so you have an entire life to enjoy music and improve. Good for you!!!
Hopefully you have ignored all the negative comments.
Michael Jordan was cut from the basketball team in junior high. I believe he continued to play and he was not too bad....
In fact, screw metronome marks. This the Romantic Period. Do whatever you want as long as you don't mess up/warp rhythms and the musical ideas can be communicated as they were originally intended.
I think parts of it were just fine. The reason why I think lots of people are saying that it's rushed is because you stayed at that tempo the whole time....like a metronome. The thing about the romantic period, is that you throw your metronome away and add rubato at will. Slow down, speed up, push and pull... that is what the romantic period is all about. You can do whatever you want (within reason) according to how you feel the music. Personally, I would slow down in the loud, grand parts.
If you think this is the wrong tempo, you need to maybe dig deeper into chopin's mind. However... while it's the correct tempo, you're kinda rushing it... don't worry, happened to me too.
I think it isn't bad at all! It's his first public performance. I remember I was nearly too nervous to play at all. (I play the clarinet) And I could only produce rubbish :P.
I think it is very well done but of course stay working on it and I believe you will be able to play it 'great'. (I actually think this already is quite good :))
However, definitely way too loud and not enough variation in dynamics. A few faulty notes here and there lead me to agree with previous people who said that you should practice more at a slower tempo before moving up in speed.
And it is the nerves that cause you to play the entire thing loudly. I've been in the same place.
I won't say this is fast because some have played it faster. However, due to the wrong notes you've made, this may have been a bit of an uncomfortable speed for you. It could also be nerves :D Make sure you practice at a comfortable pace before moving faster. It is wise to practice this piece slowly, thoughtfully, and meticulously before progressing in speed. A variation in dynamic would have enhanced this performance, especially during the triplet with the G chord, or something like that.
to people saying i played this too fast: please stop saying i played this too fast.
i know it is not even a good performance, but the sheet clearly says 'Allegro con brio' is the tempo for this piece.
now i'm not sure, but on my dictionary 'allegro' alone is anywhere from 120 to 140 bpm... and if 'brio' means the same in spanish as it does in italian then it definitely means 'fast, strong, and energetic'
it may sound a bit 'rushed', because i'm nowhere near a professional...but too fast? NO.
youre complete right.tempo is good for the piece, but its too fast for you.
brio means lively, there youre right, but you only rush thru the piece with too much pedal and absolute no phrasing work.but i think youre a just for fun player,so its good.
i dont think that you played it too fast - its a great, energetic and almost cheery speed - could just be tidied up a bit in some places, but otherwise it's great. if you played it slower it might sound like a jolly funeral durdge or something
@emmanuelt - Really, don't worry about people criticizing you, its bound to happen when playing such a piece - I thought the tempo was nice, and a nice performance too ^^ Well done!
@emmanuelt Mate it's far too fast. The performance sounds rushed from start to finish. The polonaise is not a dance to be rushed, the key thing to keep in mind with Chopin's polonaises is "think slow". You are very capable of playing this piece well but this this performance is far too fast. Don't quote metronome marks when interpreting the term "allegro con brio". This piece will sound "quickly with vigour" at many steps below 120 bpm if played well.
This is just an idea, try playing it a little slower until you become more comfortable and confident with the music.try taking each hand seperatley until there equally as comfortable. Good luck!!!!!
ok thats not the best playing, but the tempo is not too fast(allegro con brio).listen horowitz, hoffmann, pollini, argerich and many others.all about this tempo.
I give you props for making a piece like this sound well at your first recital, you obviously have a long way to go with dynamics and interpretation as it sounds like the only dynamic you played with was "very very loud". It is a loud piece, that is apparent, but still there is lots of room to stretch a bit and to bring down the volume. Good work thus far!
no offense or anything, but im 11 and i just finished that song. I dont need any of your angry responses... im just saying... shame i havent posted a performance of me playing it...
I think many of you are being a little too critical! I thought this performance was great. As for the tempo... I think it is fine! This is a Polonaise not a funeral march, it needs this overactive tempo, it's a la millitare!
thank you! it IS a polonaise, a militaire one! i will never ever change the tempo at which i play this piece, i believe in that. i do, however, need to work on having a flowing, even rhythm.
Wow.. it sounds the same way I played it when I was 15 (33 years ago).. i wore it out the same way.. keep it up, most of the critics have no idea what the average listeners enjoy, energy is as important as accuracy, plus being able to and willing to use your own interpretation rather than the way "everybody else" does is a real gift.. ...the tempo (while a little erratic) is right for the song.. great energy, chopin with an attitude.. keep up the good work..
thank you very much, i always try to not "sound like the CD" when i play, to find what the composer is trying to communicate by myself, rather than imitating what people say should be "the right way to do it".
i've been studying much over the past year, and i have upcoming recitals these months, so expect to see a video soon so you can see the differences!
i think you should play ALL pieces from beginning to end. it would be frustrating to play a piece and stop in the middle or something.
thank you for your harsh comments though; even though i think you're overreacting, i do think you're right: i need to achieve more expression in this piece. but just consider for a second that this was my very first recital in my whole life, and that i'm not a professional pianist, and that i'd had formal musical training for only a year when i played this piece

OK. This is very exasperating. I played Chopin's fourth etude perfectly in my first recital.

and wow, i'm really impressed that you can play chopin's 4th etude, let alone in your first recital! not everyone is as talented and gifted at (according to your profile) age 15.
This was a very fun piece for me to play on piano back when i was 15... my teacher taught me tips on this kind of piece. Granted, you're making the same mistakes I did. Try laying off the pedal. Think about 1) Marching in the military and 2) all those old Bugs Bunny Cartoons. good job! I find it hard to interpret this my way since it's pretty straightforward.
If its at a tempo where the performer is making mistakes (:08 for example) in my opinion it is rushed. Of course the performer has the liberty to play whatever tempo they choose. However, it is also my right as a listener to have an opinion, and I simply stated mine.
those mistakes would've happened regardless of tempo...
in fact, if i actually had played it at a slower tempo, those mistakes would've been more noticeable, clinkers would sound very distinctly, and rhythm interruptions would cause a sensation of lethargy and drag that would affect the emotional aspect trying to be conveyed.
i agree with you, though... it is a bit rushed... but in fact, i like to rush it on purpose: that's the sound i want, that's the feeling i try to express.
just try playing slowly a piece that is meant to be fast... technique and accuracy might be perfect, but what about expression and interpretation? even if it comes with mistakes! often, even if you make a mistake, you kind of 'enjoy' that mistake =]
THIS ROCKS! I'm not just saying this. I learned this piece in the 1960s and have never heard it played this way. It sounds like you a rock band accompaning you--drums and bass guitar.
Its NOT rushed, cuz THAT's his interpretation of the work! If you check my video of the same piece here on YouTube, its a lot slower, and some might say too slow (clinkers and all!). Either way, its the performer's right as an artist, to feel and express it in his or her own style, manner and emotional tone! I think VIVID and EXHILARATING!
thank you! i'm glad you think it's good, and i really appreciate your comment. maybe i will soon make a new recording with corrected tempo/chord accuracy =]
yeah it was good but i think it would be better if u had practised more carefully. use less pedal and dont rush :) anyway it was ur first recital and wasnt so bad :)

Clear those chords. The melody needs to sound more brother!! I know you play it better than that. But some of those chords are incomplete;your little finger needs to sound the most!!

Great! I agree: it's a little too fast. But I also agree that performances with big audiences makes it almost impossible to focus, and makes you rush a lot.
Well does it help if I say the same thing happened to me on my first public appearance (of a major piece that is, cuz this is a pretty major one.) I played that piece to for a public exam. But you get better the more you do it. You will alwas be a lil nervous though, but at least your in control then.

It's great and welldone that your performance keeps so brilliant and powerful throughout the whole piece.
You have very quick and tough fingers. Looks like you practiced so much.
As you might think, it could be more brilliant if you play that a little bit slower.
I recommend you to put some emphasis on "key" notes and "key" rests.
specially, end of 24th bar. That's key rest.
You're really a good player. Please show me more of your works.

I think it's terrific! See my comment posted March 28th, 2007!

Its NOT rushed, cuz THAT's his interpretation of the work! If you check my video of the same piece here on YouTube, its a lot slower, and some might say too slow. Either way, its the performer's right as an artist, to feel and express it in his or her own style, manner and emotional tone! I think VIVID and EXHILARATING!

I enjoyed your performance. Yes, it is nerve-wrecking playing in front of a crowd, especially for the first time, but it's a lot of fun as well.

I'm very glad you liked it. =]

Practice makes perfect,
