what makes the older 911's and the newer 911's sound so different? the older ones have that gargling sound similar to the Subaru boxer engines.

It did ,actually in 1997 was the first 996 first gen (Mk.I) :)

993s where made until 1998 ,so yeah ,for 1 year 993 and 996 where made simultaneously.

so '98 model year. yea 993's are the best gen overall. A 993 Turbo S would beat a 996 turbo.  993 GT2 is one of the greatest porsche's ever made. 930 flatnose turbo's are sick too and i got a soft spot for the 996 and 997 GT3's.
