  • cool lecture mann...lol but its always better to get professional help to get your work done..like giving ur papers to termpapergurus or stuff

  • A very nice lesson. Thans!

  • @RebeccaESL

Nice one! Until now I've always doubted myself. Taking a 'temporal step back' puts things right. Cheers! :-)

Something I fail to understand though is why you retell 'You are smart.' as 'He said YOU were smart.', as if he's described ME, not YOU. It should be 'He said I was smart.', provided YOU're the subject, not ME. Otherwise you'd quoting the guy and should say 'He said: "You are smart."' with no tense change, as it's a quotation, not reported speech. Am I right?

    Regards,

    Pavlin

  • thanks rebecca ,,,you are the best

  • thanks!

  • Resp. Madam,

I went through this Video and found it very useful.

If I ask some one how this Video is, obviously they would say "Great"

My friend told, it was good experience to watch this Video"

I said that really! it is useful for one who are studying the english"

Please see whether I have reported it correctly or not!

  • is there on you tube somebody with big boobs who teach this stuff? (no insult to females)

  • rebecca, thanks a lot for that explanation --you are an ecxellent teacher...god bless you!!,

  • you are very good teacher :)

  • NOTE:

    1. You do not need to change the tense if the reporting verb is in the

present, or if the original statement was about something that is still true,

    e.g.

He says he has missed the train but he'll catch the next one.

We explained that it is very difficult to find our house.

    2. These modal verbs do not change in reported speech:

  • i am american but i live in turkey now. i have an exam tomarrow. Thanks for explaining reportive speech.

  • Rabecca I just saw your one lecture and I became fan of you... very understandable english... Great want to learn more dear.....

  • rebecca thank you so much, but I'd like to learn more about the use of ING, I mean not as the present continuous or past cont, but ING as an action i.e, cocking, eating, playing I don't understand so well that please, I need your explanation and the USES OF GET i.e I get confuse.... ETC PLEASE

  • You could look up the topic "gerunds" in any good English grammar book. That will help you right away.

Get is used with many expressions; it often means to become something. For example, "I get confused" means "I become confused."

"I get tired." means "I become tired." and so on.

  • @RebeccaESL here is an ex: i'm learning driving....here is 'driving' is gerund.

  • how to change this into indirect speech she said,"I wanted to go to toilet."

  • coool!!!

  • i am english and i dont talk this proper lol well now i see why english is the hardest language

  • Trust me, it isn't.

I learned by myself... Try doing that with Spanish.

  • Thanks

  • thanks rebeca, somebody told me you were great teaching and thats right!! thank a lot

  • @cali640 my name is rebecca and im pretty sure u spell it Rebecca

  • Yes, it is Rebecca. Thanks! Kind words are welcome no matter what the spelling, though :-)

  • when we can change "who gave you the flower?" into She asked who had given me the flower, why this quote "Who is your favourtie singer?" into He asked who my favourite singer was. Can you please clarify this.

  • You are very kind. Thank you.

  • the second example should be "She told me that I had eaten dinner" shouldn´t it? You said "She told me that YOU had eaten dinner"

  • good lesson

but you can also look at "bravopclab"

    english entertainement very very interesting

Mrs Evans the teacher is a very very good teacher she explains manner fantastic

    and she speak very clearly

  • Hi Rebecca,

I have been a little bit confused about verb tenses in reported speech. I had been taught that you still can use present tense in reported speech if the sentence is a fact. For example, he said that i am student. But you said that we should change the verb tense. He said that i was a student. Please tell me which one is right and which is wrong. Thanks.

  • You would be correct if you used either. All the best.

  • thank you so mache

  • Thanks to all for your feedback. So happy if I was able to help you.

Happy New Year and remember we hold the key to our own achievements. All the best.

  • Thank you so much!!!

  • and im a little fruitcake.....wheeeeeeeee

  • Thanks Rebecca

  • I love all your lessons! I find them very useful. I think you're a great teacher! THANKS!!

  • hi teacher Rebecca. I am mongolian. In my opinion you are the greatest teacher of all time. My english is very poor. It was very hard for me to write this message. I can hope you will understand my message. If you answer me this would be great honor for me. ( my english is very poor. please give me little hope. pleaseeee.)

  • Hi Acephi

Thank you kindly for your comments. In my opinion, your English is very good, so please be confident and I am sure you will improve steadily each and every day. You already write so well. Remember. our first goal in learning a language is communication. Then come accuracy and style. I would say you have achieved all of these, so be positive about your powerful achievements. Happy New Year to you.

  • lovely mom...cita!

  • REBECCA, YOYU SAVE MY LIFE *-* tanks ! BRAAAAZIL!

  • Hi, Rebecca

Thank you for this video was very helpful.

I do have a question: I tend to think in Spanish to translate back in English when I'm speaking to someone and looking for the words make me look like I don't know how to speak. My question is: Do you have any tips on how to fix my problem. Thanks

  • Informative lesson. Thanks again.

  • Thanks rebecca....i've been having trouble trying to explain how to use could, should and would....I think your explainations are pretty direct and clear

    thanks once again!

  • Yes, sure I am. Godless idiot.

  • is this like the passive voice??

  • No, passive voice is different from reported speech. Please check a good grammar book and you'll understand the difference easily.

  • I don't think some English speakers stick to this rule. For example, "he told me he's a teacher", instead of "he told me he was a teacher."

  • True. Native speakers in all languages break all the rules and get away with it!

  • thank you so much

  • Teacher Rebecca , this lesson was really helpful for me , I used to have a lot of questions about report speech , but now is more clear Thanks a lot ,

    Sergio from Mexico City.

  • Thank you very much Ms. Rebecca,

I really found that your video lessons are very important and useful as well.

    Thanks again,

    HacSec

  • You're very welcome. Glad I could help you. Do check our engvid website for more lesson which could help.

  • your videos are very helpful.. thanksz

but i have a question.. plz teach me how to use

    - have been

    - had been

    - in, on and at

  • Actually, I do have a lesson on the prepositions you have mentioned. Please check my channel which lists all my videos. Just click on my name at the right of my photo to access all my videos.

Alternatively, you can check the engvid website for that and many other worthwhile English lessons by several teachers.

Some of them have also done lessons on the perfect tenses you asked about.

    Thanks for watching!

  • I'm an English teacher and your little videos sometimes save my ass!!! My classes have so much of you! You are GREAT!!! Keep uploading more stuff please! You are clear and easy to understand!

  • Wow! Always nice to help out a fellow teacher. Where are you teaching? Which part of the world?

Glad I could help out. Check the other teachers at engvid - each one has interesting lessons.

    Thanks, again.

  • I teach in Morelia, Mex. It's a city located halfway between México City and Guadalajara, I don't know if you are familiar with Mex geography!!! Have a GREAT day Rebecca! and thanks for your videos!

  • My pleasure. Say hi to all your students from me and tell them about our engvid website. Several good lessons by other teachers there that you might find useful, too. All the best to you.

  • BartekNNN....You are right.

The correct way, for example, is as follows:

    He said he was tired.

He told me he was tired.

Hope this helps to clarify the issue.

  • very helpfull :D

  • as far as I know you use:

    Somebody said TO me

    and Somebody told ME something

if u are gonna use said u need the infinitive TO and with tell u need the object ME

    is the answer I got!

    hope it works

    see ya!

    (=

  • because, you said:'' somebody says me'' is it correct? 0:58

  • Actually, because I was speaking quickly, it may have sounded that way. Sorry if I confused you. I went back and listened and what I said was:

    "Somebody said ta me...',

This is how it sounds when a native speaker is speaking quickly, though the actual words being used are:

    "Somebody said to me.."

    Hope this helps!

  • HI THERE I JUST HAVE A QUESTION:

WHEN SHOULD WE USE SAID AND TOLD?

    FOR INTANCE:

HE TOLD ME YOU WERE SMART oe

    HE SAID YOU WERE SMART...

what is the difference between those ones?

    thank u

    (=

  • i have the same question, he told me, or he said me, or...... he said to me

  • he told me - we use this construction when someone told me something

he said - when someone said something may be to another person and I've heard this and now I 'm "reporting" this to you - like a gossip :D:D:D

  • First of all you can't say "he said you", this verb comes with "to" for instance:

    He said TO you...,

    He said TO me...,

    They said TO them...,

And as I know there is no differences between "said to" and "told" in meaning.

  • thanks

  • Hello Teacher, thank you really very much for these lessons, i have been looking for them by the skin of my teeth, but thanks to you i managed to find them, im from Morocco and i took the Ibt Toefl last summer in Amideast centre in Casablanca but i didn't scorre a good scorre, because i was preparing for the Cbt Toefl, and didn't know that Ibt is the new one, and that the Cbt was canceld. Thank you very much, im going to take it again, and you will be my teacher. thank you very very much.

  • It would be simpler to explain that this occurs because of the need to match the use of the past tense of `tell', rather than as a set of rules.

  • thanks it was great... :) you can explain this grammer so good :) Respect ! ;-)

  • whats the website ?

  • I like this video very much.

  • Thanks Rebbeca, that was awesome!
