I love this band. It's a shame they only made three albums. The twelve dreams of dr.sardonicus has to be my favorite album ever. My fiancee introduced me to these guys, their talent is brutal!
"If you remember the 60's, you weren't there".... so they say... I must have been there because I still have my old Spirit vinyl albums. Loved them back then.... love them now... THANKS cameronm55 for the great memories....you made my day !!
I personally feel that if Dr. Sardonicus isn't the best album ever made then it's definitely in the top 5... Even now it still sounds fresh and wonderful... What an incredible band they were!!!
......Love this song by Spirit as with SO many other songs and artists of the 60's and 70's-----I'm 58 right now and feel that there will NEVER be another era in the history of rock n' roll that will be better than the music produced during this time----Just listen to Led Zeppelin's 1st album from 1969 which is OVER 40 YEARS AGO or the Doors 1st album from 1967 and you'll know what I'm talking about-----Pink Floyd, another fine example----I could go on and on but there's not enough space here.
Being on my hard-drives, Zune, CD in the old changer, & LP in the closet (with a likely 45, somewhere); some of us have NEVER been without such good music. Jay usually knew how to do it and I'm happy to say I saw him live in all 3 incarnations, back in the day. My 22 yr old son goes forth with such gods tucked under each arm, and bless YouTube for making it available to more of the young. Stuff this good never dies, it just awaits the next discoverer, residing with us in the know, until then.
I heard Spirit and introduced them to our band in the basement right after Dr. Sardonicus was released. Four finger count 20bucks. Wow that was unforgetable. We kept jamming on this song and to Love has found a way.
I ran into Jay Ferguson in an airport in 72. We played pool and he gave me a signed glossy 8x10. He was with Jo Jo Gunn and they had a hit. But Spirit was one of my favorite bands at the time. Actually I thought he was Robert Redford from a distance, then I got to get closer.
This song has hints of the alman brothers band, the band, traffic, Chicago, to name just a few. Great sound of the early 1970's. late 1960's. They were a brillant band. Great musicians. It is a shame really that they were not bigger, stadium crowd type of band. On a larger scale. Awesome rock band.
THANK YOU FOR POSTING ONE OF THEIR FANTASTIC DANCE TRACKS (SEE I GOT A LINE ON YOU) - RAW & FRESH. THEIR SONG 1984 WAS KINDA PROPHETIC !! GREAT SONG, GREAT GROUP, ALWAYS (REGRETS!) SOMEWHAT OVERLOOKED. DAVEDJ
I'm a child of the 60's, born in the 50's. Yeah, it was cool and all but it was all basically boring. Much more to do now; more choices and the challenge is to use what you brung. 150MPH is possible now, any day of the week and twice an weekends...... children of the 60s were nerds and sheep.
Saw them do the whole LP at Fillmore West...One of the best shows I ever saw.The perfect combo of great songwriting, crack musicianship and epic live performance....
A 5 star danceable song: Street Worm - Spirit [California] - 1970 - "One of their BEST. It's a great slice of street reality and helps bring the album to a fine level of realism." - Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus-1996. NOTE: This one of my favorites by them and was a hit at a party in 1972. I have all their first 4 albums on my shelf and they should me on yours. :-)
Kojak, Yul Brynner, Isaac Hayes,The bald guy from Spirit, and my father, the forerunners of putting the razor to the skull. And now there's zillions of us !
Thanks Dad! My father listened to this tape on car trips when I was young. He liked the classics Dylan, Floyd, Who, Stones and the Beatles but he also turned me on to lesser known groups like Spirit, Savoy Brown, Spooky Tooth, Curved Air, Taj Mahal and jazz like Eddie Harris, Les Mccann, Rashand Roland Kirk, Leon Thomas and Weather Report. THANKS DAD!!!!
Extremely underrated psychedelic rock band.. one of my favorites. I consider them a secret treasure.. whenever they come up on my ipod people ask who it is. 'The 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus' is a brilliant album.
I used to see the Indy 500 drivers raising their hands in a touchy situation as they began their quals run, because I'm from Indianapolis I guess.
Now I realize the song is about military Induction. Even LBJ called Vietnam a "White Man's War" as he wondered over getting further involved, with his colleagues in the private phone conversations played recently on Bill Moyers Journal. Still, they escalated, and over a decade of disasterous war was the result...
@harponercam Kicks just keep getting harder to find? As in Paul Revere and the Raiders perhaps? I thought that was a fairly innocent prohibitionist song pre Summer of Love, a great beat, but Spirit was a quantum leap.
Though I consider myself a huge fan of Spirit I hadn't tumbled to your analysis of Mr Skin, so thanks for that.
@majorhoop I flew in from Mississippi in October 1991 to see Spirit, Doobies, and Dr. Demento at Mile Square! The day was absolutely beautiful and they had just come together (all the original members) to release the Chronicles Album. Spirit was the best.
and everyone take off the clothes and dance naked! My gurlfren only when she is at our home so she can shut the curtains. shae say i dance like a flailing chicken.our neighbors don't understand the arte of Le Danse. Good chi evryone.
Guitarist Paul Gilbert has a live vid up of his band performing this...Great to see the "youngsters" are carrying the torch! ha ha ...his rendition is very good...
It's a mystery to me too. Spirit had a LOT of talent....A great band....they only had a few top 40's (this being one of them). I guess in those days (unless U were the GD or The Band, no (not many) hits on the radio meant no exposure). Too bad.
many FM-orinted bands avoided top 40 anyway. Spirit was well-known amongst true rock fans. FM ruled with the likes of Spirit, Joplin, Chambers Bros., hendrix, doors, traffic, cream, etc.
Saw them in San Diego around 1969. Very unique songs and kick ass live band! Today 9-25-08 is John Locke's Birthday. Sadly, found out today that he died 8-4-06 at age 62. I agree - those 1st 4 CD's with their original lineup are one of a kind!
5 uniquely talented people made this band as great as they were. their 1st 4 albums are as good as any band's best 4 albums-wish andes, ferguson and cass (85 years young) would reform even for just 1 show!
The sound quality for this is amazing. God, what the hell has happened to music these days? We had an avanlanche of good bands and songs every months it seemed. Really for the deprived children of today. Sadly, many of them don't know what real mucic is.
@EmpressOfWyoming58 I agree, alot of music is really bad these days, but there was alot of bad music in the 60's and 70's =), its just that only the good music is retained and stays popular. i bet you won't be hearing "Teach Me How to Dougie" 30 years from now.
my brother turned me on to spirit and many others(spooky tooth, nitzinger, hot tuna etc.got to love classic rock&roll

Doesn't just about *everything* that was made in that year, m8?
IMHO, 1973 was a great year for *great* music from folk like The Fab 4 (solo), Gaye, Rare Earth, Floyd, *ad infinitum*...
..and including this, of course...
