Couldn't beat this with some weed, gin and tonic, and a steak.......and, oh, some sweet female companionship to top it off......take it away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Never in my life would I imagine a thread dedicated to this song. I was around 17 when it came out and my mates and I considered it filler stuffed in amongst several classics. Maybe it was ahead of it's time? I dunno. I don't feel any differently about it now than I did back then. Strange, indeed. (and yes...we were doing drugs back then) :-) There are many songs, over the years, which captured the essence of the moment. If this one does it for you, that's excellent. You have a soul.
This is truly the greatest song, and not just of cream. It's one of the few songs I know that, even when listened to one thousand times over, hooks each tissue of your nerves and mind in such an entrancing way... Everyone else may experience it differently, but despite never abusing drugs at any moment in my seventeen years of life, this song gives me such an incredible high. If anyone else can name a better experience they've had with a song, please do.
@GuyOnChair A seventeen-year-old who doesn't have a Curly Howard haircut, huge old-folks-home shorts, and listens to music which contains other frequencies besides just bass?? ....I say this cautiously, but...maybe there IS hope??
@gwugluud Sir, I try to look and dress as plain as possible. Keeps a soulless exterior, and a soulful interior. Often times a rock-related T-shirt, some simple denim jeans, and some workin' boots. I try to get along with the dickless douchebags that infest the Earth in this day and age, to be fair, its all I got. In the respect of Yin and Yang, deep down in the darkness, there is a trickle of light. I've always had an interest in music, but sadly, I also have an interest in software..
@SupernalOne Y'know.. when these guys had a hit.... it was major. When they put out a dud just as anyone else might be prone to do, it was just as minor. You get the point?
not sure - I meant I love this song - maybe I was being too facetious or something, and it didn't come through - anyway, yes Quality speaks for itself, that's a universal - cheers
The Sixties version of "Rock Around the Clock." What a difference a decade makes. So dark and mysterious. Yet with the same impulse: to lose oneself in the music and the night.
@SKAuthenticDank don't be putting other people down for being born when they were born. That's something nobody can control. I feel fine being born when I was born. A real man don't be saying shit like you did.
Disraeli Gears and Are You Exprienced (Hendrix) were released in the U.S. at approximately the same time and completely changed the course of modern music. Clapton and Hendrix. Man, does it get any better?
@pdxbiker2009 Van Halen's song can't hold a cock to this masterpiece. VH has it's own list of hits, but Dance the Night Away is child's play compared to Cream's original work of art.
The Druming is like the pounding beats of a heart pacing as the person dances to the beat of the music the singing is like angels from heaven speaking the word of God and the guitar is the message from God himself! incredible!!!
@bamboosa You, sir, have made an excellent point. I have this on vinyl and nothing can compare with the authenticity. Its the only way to listen to such classics by Cream and the other great bands of the past.
The whole album is a glimpse of Heaven of just over half an hour. Just hit Play again when the CD stops whirring. Gotta go on the lookout for a vintage wax 'cause the CD sound compressed and distorted, and that's on a Marantz CD14. Can't blame the hardware.
@BlackFloyd94 Mine actually is remastered. That's where it often goes wrong I'm afraid; pushing the signal into digital distortion/clipping. A good vintage vinyl copy will cost you, however.
The Absolute Best Trio Rock players ever...made history, spawned a thousand copycats...started a whole new generation of guitar-players...Cream was the best, don't nobody deny it...you may like Others, but give them their due credit...
You know, I totally respect your choice. But, my #1 choice from the studio recordings would be Deserted Ceties of the Heart, with Those Were The Days as a close second. Of the live material, Crossroads, from Wheels of Fire will always be the defining performance for me. I'm a bass player, so my choices are influenced by Jack Bruce.
@binka21 Well I agree Totally! The chord progression was simple, but genius! The harmonies were well thought out. On "dance the night away" Bruce does an up scale and Eric goes down making the song pure Cream. Not many were pushing the envelope like this at that time. Jack Bruce Rules!
Oddly, while Dance is far from being the most technically challenging song Cream ever recorded, it is my favorite too. Great chord progressions, superb bass lines, and Baker is at his finest. I always loved Pete Brown's lyrics on this one--he had to have been blown away to make this one up!

If I could pick one song to soundtrack my life, this would be it.

@kimmedavid Oh, for sure David you best believe that Jimi Hendrix (my favorite Guitarist and Artist of them all) is up there too. I just thought I leave his name out of it so that way I wouldn't steal Cream's thumder.. ;)
@MrBluesrules I know that there were others but on here on giving credit to Cream. If it was a Jimi Hendrix song I would be on here giving him credit. Anyway, thanks for recommending Zappa. Peace!
@MrBluesrules Eric Clapton was in the Yardbirds before Jeff Beck...
Also, while I love Jeff Beck and he's carried on being an innovator (unlike Clapton), he's simply never reached the dizzying heights of Cream-era Clapton (at least in my opinion.)
@VanDoodah I agree with you. Clapton was incredible at this time. I admire Beck for never selling out and carving his own path. Clapton seemed lost for a few decades. If you haven't heard it yet, try out We're going Wrong from the Cream reunion 2005. The best Clapton has played in years.
@bruces3 the licks really arent to hard.. You can hear where Clapton records a second guitar part on top of what he was already playing on some songs.. I think itd be more challenging to meld those seperate parts as one player.
this song is soooooooooooo good. its sucha special song with real meaning. i have this album signed by all 3 of them in my room and i listen to this and stare at it all day...
My dad always played this when I was playing Sonic Adventure/2, for some reason.
I remember hearing this one Cream song that he called (and still calls, I guess) the "craziest song of all time" where it goes from almost thrash heavy to psychedelic blues.
@CaptRaven54 exactly the stuff Clapton played after wasnt written as well and wasnt structured as genius as the playing here. I dont think he just up and lost his skill.. just his creative edge.. just goes to show what vision, imagination, drive and energy can do alot for someones sound
@atl2maryland So I'm not the only one that feels that way. Yeah, his stuff with Cream and also Blind Faith was his best. After that something got lost, he was still a great guitarist, of course, but something got lost. (IMHO)
@merger4 It's hard to pick, but I have to agree. If you don't agree, listen to it again. The melody line, their singing, and Clapton's leads and hook are beyond words. And then I can't say enough about Ginger's drumming. They were, all three of them, at the absolute pinnacle of their combined gifts in this song. Oh, I thought of another two songs I have to put with this; "Those Were The Days" and "Pressed Rat and Warthog." Oops, and...and...and...Nobody was better. NOBODY!
@christoJihad2 hi thanx for your comments i also like badge, but my favorite band ever are the Doors , i do like the stones but more of the early stuff, i like Nirvana the sixties band , Tiny Goddess was brill in 1967, i'm so glad i was a teenager during that period , regards merger 4,
@merger4: How about this with some weed, quality drink, and an intoxicating woman............and others like it on the turntable?.......Yes, those BC days were real, and three Spring Breaks in Bermuda weren't bad either......ALL paid for my your's truly; Yes, all of it!!.......courtesy of the ships, the cars, and more........and Cum Laude to boot!!

@MrBluesrules beck came after clapton to yardbirds, and he still after clapton
Feelyman 1 year ago
@MrBluesrules Eric Clapton was in the Yardbirds before Jeff Beck...
Also, while I love Jeff Beck and he's carried on being an innovator (unlike Clapton), he's simply never reached the dizzying heights of Cream-era Clapton (at least in my opinion.)
VanDoodah 1 year ago
@VanDoodah I agree with you. Clapton was incredible at this time. I admire Beck for never selling out and carving his own path. Clapton seemed lost for a few decades. If you haven't heard it yet, try out We're going Wrong from the Cream reunion 2005. The best Clapton has played in years.

Good luck trying to play Disraeli Gears front to back on guitar...that took me forever, and still didn't quite get everything right.
bruces3 1 year ago
@bruces3 the licks really arent to hard.. You can hear where Clapton records a second guitar part on top of what he was already playing on some songs.. I think itd be more challenging to meld those seperate parts as one player.

I always loved this song.
My dad always played this when I was playing Sonic Adventure/2, for some reason.
I remember hearing this one Cream song that he called (and still calls, I guess) the "craziest song of all time" where it goes from almost thrash heavy to psychedelic blues.
Which song is that?

That sitar style lead is actually pretty cool. I'm going to have to use that some time.

When EC REALLY played!!!
CaptRaven54 1 year ago
@CaptRaven54 exactly the stuff Clapton played after wasnt written as well and wasnt structured as genius as the playing here. I dont think he just up and lost his skill.. just his creative edge.. just goes to show what vision, imagination, drive and energy can do alot for someones sound
atl2maryland 1 year ago
@atl2maryland So I'm not the only one that feels that way. Yeah, his stuff with Cream and also Blind Faith was his best. After that something got lost, he was still a great guitarist, of course, but something got lost. (IMHO)

check out the foot pedals on that hippie drummer...nobody does the foot pedal like ginger- unfortunately no quality recording does it justice here.

How good is this? The best Cream song ever, thats my opinion .
merger4 2 years ago 29
@merger4 It's hard to pick, but I have to agree. If you don't agree, listen to it again. The melody line, their singing, and Clapton's leads and hook are beyond words. And then I can't say enough about Ginger's drumming. They were, all three of them, at the absolute pinnacle of their combined gifts in this song. Oh, I thought of another two songs I have to put with this; "Those Were The Days" and "Pressed Rat and Warthog." Oops, and...and...and...Nobody was better. NOBODY!

@merger4 I disagree. The best Cream song ever is: Wake me up before you go go.
