At least Schumacher gave the trophy to Barrichello - and made it clear that he deserved the victory instead of himself - Sadly this didn't happen this year in Germany, when Alonso bullsh*tted the audience by claiming that he had no idea what happened.
@EUmkl Alonso didn't bullshit the audience by himself. Ferrari forced them to say that there where no team orders. So ultimately it's Stefano Domenicali who's to blame.
They shouldn't have just fined ferrari. They should have switched the race result of the two drivers and made a statement out of it.
There is no point in team orders cause we will just switch it around at the end of the racen and give the team a huge fine.
Enzo Ferrari himself always said that his two drivers should be allowed to race each other for wins, he wouldn't have it any other way. Although he really liked Gilles Villeneuve he was glad Jody Scheckter (both in Ferrari that year) actually won the title in 1979. Although Villeneuve often was faster he was never given a win by his team mate.
How things have changed.
Btw, after Barrichello's incredible bad luck at the start of the 2002 season you'd think Ferrari would show some pity to him...
Here's the problem. Schumacher was easily leading the world championship and already had a 22 point lead and 4 wins, and 5 straight podiums. Barrichello had a bad start of the season and retired with mechanical trouble when he was driving really well. After all that shit Barrichello went though you'd expect Ferrari to reward him when things were looking good, especially since Schumacher was already leading in the points race. But no, they just spat Barrichello in the face.
In 2002 the Ferrari was so good there was absolutely NO REASON not to let both their drivers race each other for wins. I think it's great. Lose the championship and lots of money because of morals or cheat and become world champion? Maybe that's why none of you are racing drivers.
Lose WHAT championship? Before this race Schumacher had 5 straight podium finishes and 4 wins. He had a WHOPPING 22 point cushion on Montoya (after only 5 races), who hadn't even won a single race, and by the looks of it was nowhere NEAR the pace of the Ferraris.
Anybody with half a brain realized the 2002 Ferrari was so dominant they would walk the title. And they DID, Schumacher was crowned champion after 11 races, despite 6 remaining.
....bad luck and retired with trouble in 4 out of the first 5 races. Pitty that most of you guys can't understand the guy on the TV, saluting Ruben's Mother (it was mother's day here, that Sunday) then he goes "Not today, not today!...Yes today? Yes, today..." to Ferrari screwing Barrichello.
I actually feel a bit sick after watching this. I watched F1 religiously up until 2002 when I couldn't take the sight of Schumacher's smug Germanic face any longer. Started watching again when Raikkonen and Alonso came into the equation. Nice to the arrogant Kraut losing out to Rubens despite dangerous attempts to ward him off in the last Hungarian Grand Prix. Vettel would be just as bad I think.
@mustang2k10 micheal didnt do anything, the team ordered, and rubens got off the gas, he could have won the race, why do people blame scchumacher for this ?!?! should he instantly have braked and ....bs
@armatus99 Rubens said in an interview that they discussed the situation during the last 8 laps. In the final lap Rubens asked Ferrari to ask Schumacher if he really wanted to do that. And of course Schumacher agreed.
yup i am a big ferrari fan but this sickness me to watch this and yup just lyk in hockenheim they tell the driver to move over so their #1 driver can take it all and the comment that fernando made during the hockenheim race "this is ridiculous" if i was felipe massa, fernando's teamate, i would have went up to fernando and say "i don't care what ur lap times are if you r faster than then pass me". i lyk how micheal push rubens to the top step.
You'd think Ferrari would learn after this incident but no low and behold today at Hockenheim they get another Brazilian to move over so their so called number one driver can take top spot.
@hassanahmed80 I agree. Masa was as fast as Alonso and he could easily defend his position, but.....That those the only way for Alonso to win, not because he was faster or more skillful... What can anyone say, another ''glorius'' victory for fairplay driver Alonso
And Ferrari even caused more trouble to Felipe because of that stupid team order what they did. I say that Alonso doesn't desirve becoming world champion with Ferrari this year.
my point was that this year at Hockenheim they clearly made a team order when they are not allowed, so maybe you should stop chatting shit. I'm glad a fizzy pop team won both championships, at least they allow both their drivers to fight for the title in the spirit of ways
The difference is that Schumacher had a 19 point lead in the championship so he doesn't need that two more points. Alnso, instead, was far behind Webber that time and needed that 7 more points. I agree it wasn't fair, but you can see that there's some difference in the situations...
@Schumifreak9 Schumacher had to be aware what was going on via team radio! If he didn't want to pass, he would have left Rubens infront and let him win...
Wow. So the same clause was in Rubens' 2009 Brawn GP contract, being the reason for him failing against Jenson? He's simply not strong enough against his teammates, that's all.
@SynthieAl I agree with you. Rubens is a nice guy that can be fast on his day, but nice drivers do not win championships. Senna was ruthless and agressive. So is Hamilton. So is Alonso.
They say Fangio was very nice both in private and on the racetrack.
Prost wasn't ruthless nor agressive and his perfectionist style won him 4 titles, 1 with Senna as a team mate no less.
Gilles Villeneuve was ruthless and agressive, and look where that got him. His team mate Scheckter won the 1979 title fair and square, with smart driving.
There's nothing to discuss here. People take this race way too seriously. Schumi let Barrichello through to win Indy in the same year so what's there to whine about? As for team orders always allowing Schumi to win, Barrichello won 4 races in 2002 that were 1-2 finishes for ferrari, and guess what, Schumi finished less than a second behind in all of them.
Rubens deserve win, but we already see other team orders, and at this time it was not against rules, no problem for that.
What bothers me most is the hypocrisy after. Some victories given to Rubens (Hungary or Monza, but not Nurburg, and Indy Schumi didn't think Rubens pass) to appear magnanimous. Schumi said he wasn't agree when he was informed of this decision, so he would have opposed it. Todt "for the championship" while Schumacher has a huge lead, with a great F2002...
@Natty7478 Schumi?! Look, isn't it Ribens who broke to let Schumi win? Or am I wrong? Look at it, it looks like Barrichello let him in front on purpose...mah!
@GammaCaeles He said he weren't gonna do it but decided on the last corner because "it was in the contract", and he wudda risked the sack if he didn't move over, tell me you wouldn't do that? Schumi still shudda got disqualified, he shud have also broke and let rubbens win, then rubbens could say "I did stop but so did michael right on the finish line"
@youngdeezy1990 As with everything in F1, money. Austria could not put up the money anymore and with the draw of the rich Eastern countries, it stood no chance. Bernie Ecclestone was also not happy with the pit facilities. The pits and main grandstand were destroyed in 2004 but not rebuilt. Track has not been used since 2004 for anything. Red Bull bought it and will rebuild the pits and grandstand this year but not to F1 levels. DTM will be the only major event.
Ferrari must have been sick in their heads to do this. I am a big Schumacher hater, but I think that even the biggest fan of him would agree that Schumacher should have atleast been disqualified from this race for this, if not a multiple race ban aswell.
@Anime998877 You clearly chose not to understand. What I am pointing at here is that Schumacher has done nothing but cheat in his whole F1 career. Barrichello fairly overtook Schumacher in the USA. The difference was Ferrari wrongly favoured Schumacher, whereas McLaren rightly treated the driver's equally.
Err. No he didn't, Schumacher handed him the win in USA. Now that I think about it he also let Barrichello win Italy, and Nurburgring that same year. What the hell do you mean cheated his whole f1 career? Yea - he won all 7 championships by cheating.
no no, it's not the same.. Hakkinen WAS FIRST from the first lap until he got called WRONGLY by the McLaren team in Australia.. He just retook his place.. No one in the public whistled or said anything.
Barrichello was in first position from lap one 'til the last curve.. and the WHOLE PUBLIC thumbed down and whistled.
@thedoctorand Schumacher cheated his whole career? Hill did not have to try and squeeze past at a corner where overtaking is impossible in 94. Benetton-Renault shat on everyone in 95. He beat Mika in a straight fight in 2000. He cruised away from Coulthard in 01. Ferrari's of 2002 & 2004 were some of the most dominant F1 cars ever built with bullet-proof reliabilty. He beat both Kimi & Montoya in 2003 in a tight race to the last GP. You are just a dipshit hater.
@thestaggie I think you will find that Schumacher's car had major upgrades that his team mate's cars didn't have. Now, as I said, this conversation is over.
@thedoctorand I think you will find Michael has out-driven every single one of his team mates, even before he was a world champion. Out driving Riccardo Patrese at Benetton, dumping his Jordan 7th on the grid at his debut GP at a pure drivers track, Spa. Winning 3 races and getting 59 points while while Irvine dicked around and got 11 in 1996. Get over it, he is good and every team favours their #1 driver. McLaren Forcing Alonso to give car settings to Hamilton.
@thestaggie Oh, heavens, no. Schumacher was given a much more powerful car than his team mate's even before he was champion. There. Corrected what you said :P. No. Not all teams favour their No. 1 driver.
@thedoctorand Are you serious? So, Jordan, Benetton, Ferrari, Mercedes, Ford & Renault all broke the rules to give Michael cars that were far more powerful than his team mates? So his Benetton-Ford was way more powerful than Patrese's but not powerful enough to beat the McLaren-Hondas, Williams-Hondas & Williams-Renaults? His '96 Ferrari was way more powerful than Irvines but not powerful enough to beat the Williams & Benetton Renaults? Fuck off you retard.
@thedoctorand I bet you believe man never went to the moon, Elvis and Tupac are still alive. Any other great conspiracy? Oh, and I forgot, Eddie Jordan must've also built Michael an extra special, super fast car just for his debut too then destroyed it when Michael left. Seriously, fuck off with your conspiracies.
First of all - you really have no idea about Schumi, you're just spitting out whatever comes to your mind, so piss of with your pathetic excuses. Why would Schumacher get a more powerful car before he was champion? That doesn't make sense.. Schumi was not the number 1 driver in Jordan or Benneton from 91-93 but he trashed all his team mates. That includes 3 times champion Nelson Piquet, and most experienced driver at the time in Riccardo Patrese.
yeah i agree nachof248, everybody remember this juste because this is schumacher and ferrari...just jalous...but every team did it...more or less discretely...but renaut did it for alonso, mclaren between hakkinen and coultard or with lewis...so don't blame only shcumacher and like if he was the only one...you would twist...
this one was the first Formula 1 race I saw... I was 10 and my dad gave me a poster of Michael Schumacher's 2001 car, so I started watching F1 to see what it was about... I wanted Schumacher to win, and when this happened, my innocent, 10 year old soul was happy haha then years later i was ashamed of celebrating this. I am still a Schumacher's fan, but not because of this.
i hope rubens whispered in his ear...u dont deserve this win let alone the 2002 title....rubens had every right to fight for this championship schumi didnt deserve this 1.
What the commentators are saying makes a load of sense, now, in hindsight. Even then it did. This was to be one of the most important races in F1, as the biggest reason team orders were banned.
I see this as race fixing. Not as bad as what Renault did; but fixing results all the same. Ferrari should have been given a suspended disqualification - like Renault, and then when they insulted F1 fans again in Indianapolis, they would have been disqualified from F1. I will never forgive Ferrari for these races. The 2002 season turned me into a Support-Anyone-But-Ferrari Man.
I would not blame Schumacher for this, allthought he coul deny to overtake Barrichello. This is Ferrari...
And, this year, I guess it's not gonna be different.
The Ferrari Team does not know (or do not want to) how to work with two good drivers, does someone remember what happened between Didier Pironi and Gilles Villeneuve in San Marino, 1981?...
@vazor99 Not only he is a cheater (fact), but also a COWARD. He should face the consequences of his act. I'm brazilian and I was extremely ashamed of all this. Barrichello made a mistake to accept going to the first place in the podium.
@grbocuzzi If you think schumacher is a cheater well that is your opinion and I respect it. In my opinion schumacher is not cheater and I'm not even a fan of schumacher
schumacher was 21 points clear of montoya in championship comming into this race so for ferrari to have team orders at this early in season is beyond me.....round 6 of 17.the 4 races that barrichello won schumacher rode shotgun everytime
Shut up! It`s you, not me. I thought purely from sportsmanship point of view. But I am not fan of Flavio either. Let`s say - both of them deserved to be punished.
Tyres don't fly off the cars anymore, they have a wire attached to the car so if the car crashes and the tyre starts to fall off this wire holds it back. Something like that but tyres don't go off anymore and NP crash wasn't that serious really. And yeah MS is a cheater. Not to mention in 99, MH won the championship yeah but Ferrari drove with illegal barge-boards, FIA didn't even give them points deduction.
Also 03 when MS came 8th at Hungary (lapped by FA). Ferrari complain to FIA (Michelin is too fast). FIA quickly goes out with a message, "Before the rule was that you measure the tire's width before the race, as of the next race, we measure the tire after the race". As a result, Michelin had 3 weeks in which to develop new tires. Of course it didn't went well for Michelin and MS drives on to win the championship. At least 3 titles going away because of pure cheating I think.
@VuDu4000 I agree with you. Williams BMW was robbed of a Constructor's Cup and Kimi Raikkonen was robbed of the Driver's Championship because of the stupid FIA and Max "Scumbag" Mosley >:(! I saw the whole 2003 F1 season and I thought that Ferrari were finally de-throned until Ross Brawn open his big mouth and Ferrari dominates the final three races all because of the tires. Bridgestone tires were too skiny back then :P.
How did NP risk any lifes with his crash?. The way he did it and the speed he had I highly doubt NP risked anyones life, not even his own. Even if that was ugly done, this was even worse in my meaning because NP got away with it sort of until he told everyone what happend, Schumacher didn't get away with this. Schumacher, Briatore and Ferrari big cheaters. Too bad Briatore wasn't team boss in Ferrari during MS's time there, it would have been the biggest cheating team of all time.
@VuDu4000 Yes they did get away with this because team orders was allowed at this time. Schumi got fined for pushing Barri on to the top step of the podium, but the race was OK by FIA. Comparing this to NP does not fly, NP (Renault) cheated while this was legal. BTW, teamorders are no longer allowed in F1.....wonder why ;)
I am aware of that but I still think this is one of the most ugly moves in F1 apart from when MS tried to wreck others to win the championship. It was although the correct thing to let RB stand at the top of the podium and let him have the winners trophy but still, MS should not even have gone up there, he should have been so ashamed.
It may be an ugly move, but you have to keep in mind that it was perfectly legal. They did not break any rules by the team order. It was however porly executed and that is why it is banned from then on. When Flavio asked NP to crash it was however against the rules and hence he was punished. The funny thing is that NP did not even get a slap on the wrist for deliberately crashing his car. One could ask what you would do if your employer asked you to step aside for one of your colleagues?
In that case, do you also think that Barrichello is a bad person to slow down? He would have won if he kept his foot down. Like in 2002 Indy when Schumi let Barrichello by to win.
This symbolized the end of F1 racing as gentleman's sport. What are we left with now? Spy scandals? Hamilton's crocdile tears in Melbourne 2009? Briatore's race fixing? Austria 2002 marks the start of the end I'm afraid.
Damn rite, and to think that twat is now FIA president.
His shady backroom deal with Max Mosley in 1998 took the piss, £millions exchanged hands between Ferrari & the FIA in return for 'special treatment'. No wonder Schumi was allowed to get away with so much bullshit, the FIA as good as gave him the green light to do it.
What Briatore did was pathetic and illegal. What Todt did was team orders that is legal at this point. I swear people blow this race out of proportion, Schumi let Barrichello take 3 victories in 02 anyway.

Anime998877 1 year ago
Rubens deserve win, but we already see other team orders, and at this time it was not against rules, no problem for that.
What bothers me most is the hypocrisy after. Some victories given to Rubens (Hungary or Monza, but not Nurburg, and Indy Schumi didn't think Rubens pass) to appear magnanimous. Schumi said he wasn't agree when he was informed of this decision, so he would have opposed it. Todt "for the championship" while Schumacher has a huge lead, with a great F2002...

I am a big Schumacher hater, but I think that even the biggest fan of him would agree that Schumacher should have atleast been disqualified from this race for this, if not a multiple race ban aswell.
thedoctorand 1 year ago
@thedoctorand
Barrichello should have also got a multiple race ban in USA 2002 then. Or Hakkinen in Australia 1998. Why are people so annoyed at this race?
Anime998877 1 year ago
@Anime998877 You clearly chose not to understand. What I am pointing at here is that Schumacher has done nothing but cheat in his whole F1 career. Barrichello fairly overtook Schumacher in the USA. The difference was Ferrari wrongly favoured Schumacher, whereas McLaren rightly treated the driver's equally.
thedoctorand 1 year ago
@thedoctorand
Err. No he didn't, Schumacher handed him the win in USA. Now that I think about it he also let Barrichello win Italy, and Nurburgring that same year. What the hell do you mean cheated his whole f1 career? Yea - he won all 7 championships by cheating.

thestaggie 1 year ago
@thedoctorand Schumacher cheated his whole career? Hill did not have to try and squeeze past at a corner where overtaking is impossible in 94. Benetton-Renault shat on everyone in 95. He beat Mika in a straight fight in 2000. He cruised away from Coulthard in 01. Ferrari's of 2002 & 2004 were some of the most dominant F1 cars ever built with bullet-proof reliabilty. He beat both Kimi & Montoya in 2003 in a tight race to the last GP. You are just a dipshit hater.
thestaggie 1 year ago
@thestaggie I think you will find that Schumacher's car had major upgrades that his team mate's cars didn't have. Now, as I said, this conversation is over.
thedoctorand 1 year ago
@thedoctorand I think you will find Michael has out-driven every single one of his team mates, even before he was a world champion. Out driving Riccardo Patrese at Benetton, dumping his Jordan 7th on the grid at his debut GP at a pure drivers track, Spa. Winning 3 races and getting 59 points while while Irvine dicked around and got 11 in 1996. Get over it, he is good and every team favours their #1 driver. McLaren Forcing Alonso to give car settings to Hamilton.
thestaggie 1 year ago
@thestaggie Oh, heavens, no. Schumacher was given a much more powerful car than his team mate's even before he was champion. There. Corrected what you said :P. No. Not all teams favour their No. 1 driver.
thedoctorand 1 year ago
@thedoctorand Are you serious? So, Jordan, Benetton, Ferrari, Mercedes, Ford & Renault all broke the rules to give Michael cars that were far more powerful than his team mates? So his Benetton-Ford was way more powerful than Patrese's but not powerful enough to beat the McLaren-Hondas, Williams-Hondas & Williams-Renaults? His '96 Ferrari was way more powerful than Irvines but not powerful enough to beat the Williams & Benetton Renaults? Fuck off you retard.
thestaggie 1 year ago
@thedoctorand I bet you believe man never went to the moon, Elvis and Tupac are still alive. Any other great conspiracy? Oh, and I forgot, Eddie Jordan must've also built Michael an extra special, super fast car just for his debut too then destroyed it when Michael left. Seriously, fuck off with your conspiracies.
thestaggie 1 year ago
@thedoctorand
Wow, you really are an idiot.

VuDu4000 2 years ago
Also 03 when MS came 8th at Hungary (lapped by FA). Ferrari complain to FIA (Michelin is too fast). FIA quickly goes out with a message, "Before the rule was that you measure the tire's width before the race, as of the next race, we measure the tire after the race". As a result, Michelin had 3 weeks in which to develop new tires. Of course it didn't went well for Michelin and MS drives on to win the championship. At least 3 titles going away because of pure cheating I think.
VuDu4000 2 years ago
@VuDu4000 I agree with you. Williams BMW was robbed of a Constructor's Cup and Kimi Raikkonen was robbed of the Driver's Championship because of the stupid FIA and Max "Scumbag" Mosley >:(! I saw the whole 2003 F1 season and I thought that Ferrari were finally de-throned until Ross Brawn open his big mouth and Ferrari dominates the final three races all because of the tires. Bridgestone tires were too skiny back then :P.
ffmotorsports51 1 year ago
How did NP risk any lifes with his crash?. The way he did it and the speed he had I highly doubt NP risked anyones life, not even his own. Even if that was ugly done, this was even worse in my meaning because NP got away with it sort of until he told everyone what happend, Schumacher didn't get away with this. Schumacher, Briatore and Ferrari big cheaters. Too bad Briatore wasn't team boss in Ferrari during MS's time there, it would have been the biggest cheating team of all time.
VuDu4000 2 years ago
@VuDu4000 Yes they did get away with this because team orders was allowed at this time. Schumi got fined for pushing Barri on to the top step of the podium, but the race was OK by FIA. Comparing this to NP does not fly, NP (Renault) cheated while this was legal. BTW, teamorders are no longer allowed in F1.....wonder why ;)
hejamodo 2 years ago
I am aware of that but I still think this is one of the most ugly moves in F1 apart from when MS tried to wreck others to win the championship. It was although the correct thing to let RB stand at the top of the podium and let him have the winners trophy but still, MS should not even have gone up there, he should have been so ashamed.
VuDu4000 2 years ago
It may be an ugly move, but you have to keep in mind that it was perfectly legal. They did not break any rules by the team order. It was however porly executed and that is why it is banned from then on. When Flavio asked NP to crash it was however against the rules and hence he was punished. The funny thing is that NP did not even get a slap on the wrist for deliberately crashing his car. One could ask what you would do if your employer asked you to step aside for one of your colleagues?
hejamodo 2 years ago
@hejamodo Perhaps he didn't break any rules. But in this race he showed, he had no character and no kind of sportsmanship. He is a really bad person.
