  • THE MAN IS A GENIUS.

  • That's why I love this guy, all his music is from his heart, not head :D

  • stupid fat chicks

  • He's amazing but give some credit to the band! They're amazing too!

  • How come John said "thanks for whatever that was." near the end? The chord progression was apparently written on the spot but it seems like the band did know what was up.

  • @ztbsk8er Because a lot of lyrics in this performance was just something he came up with there, lyrics that he added to the original song "My stupid mouth".

  • its amazing how much of a better singer John is now than he was at this time.

  • whoah! is this like, on the spot? o.o

  • favorite.

  • 8:02 stunned me lolz ;)

  • im a huge Dave Matthews fan along with John Mayer i know and am used to hearing songs written on the spot since dave does it probly 3 times a show. Im by no means ignorant enough to say im an expert but i just am used to hearing it, but everyone does things different so i could be wrong. But to me it seems that the lyrics to this song are most likely made up on the spot but i think the chords and progressions are already known. no way could his band pick up transition to my stupid mouth so fast.

  • @kadleckyle he was using lyrics from my stupid mouth over the new progression. It wasn't like they just cut into it.

  • @kadleckyle um that sounded like the easiest transition ever... basically the same chord progression.. once he started singin the actual lyrics they just no to play the song.. maybe i am misunderstanding what you are saying is difficult...

  • Listening to this song while having to make breakfast (and do plenty of other things) for making an "inappropriate joke" on facebook. This man sings to my soul!

  • oh my gosh . beautiful lyrics! , put together wonderfully , oh john... your so goooooooooooood

  • Can I like this a thousand times? I just love it.

  • omg how can you be soooooo goooodd!!! made an entire song that strung into My stupid mouth!!! amazing!

  • i love the drummer's energy

  • has anyone noticed he doesnt need any fancy lighting or any thing to put on a great show

  • hoho that's a lot of extra lyrics.. :p

  • muse in the making...

  • the added part is so soothing ~ ~ ~ love it!!!

  • am i the only one that gets put off by him saying 'im sorry'

when you are on stage you dont apologize... know what im saying? even if it is just lyrics.

    maybe its just me.

  • @SimpIicity1 nope..

  • holy **** !! you're great!!!

  • I cant even begin to understand how he can do this. He is so incredibly talented!!!

  • anyone realised that that tune is 'Waiting on the World to change' with an edited beat - still cool though, better actually, the band merge really well

  • @AlwaysBillybob and you do realise thsi was probably waay before continuum

  • jordan is so awesome !

  • @StevenGA1011 thanks for sharing. Great song from a great album. He just has a way with words - Love the extra verses

  • i love his creativity!!!!!!!! i wish he was more like this now. i dont know about you but i think he just isnt the same anymore........

  • haha i love JJ's expression at about 8:40 just before the vid ends...

  • I'm so glad I came across this video. I love it! My Stupid Mouth is my theme song. These additional lyrics just express more of how I feel most of the time.

  • anyone message me tabs??

  • @neoncoloredblues Anyone look at the description??

  • @neoncoloredblues Anyone look at the description??

  • planned or not this is AWESOME!!

  • arguing over the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win, your still retarded

  • anyone know where i could download this version?

  • @BrannonMcConkey, I completely agree with you. You can see the hesitation in his eyes when he looks at the neck of his guitar when he begins to play the song. He then steps over to the bass player to let him in on the progression.

The lyrics are a bit weird, but you can see that he's making it up as he goes along.

I love seeing John play such great music, regardless of his inspiration.

The way he fuses the two songs together is incredible.

  • No harm done. Appreciate Mayer we shall.

  • So my last comment is very relevant, only to the extent in which you try to diminish the value of my opinion. I don't EMPIRICALLY prove that this performance is planned, just like you have no factual basis it ISN'T. You posit a credulous notion, and I for one trust my intuit, experience, understanding and cognitive awareness. If that doesn't suffice for you, my apologies. You don't have to prove anything to me.

  • You can continue with the sardonic, entitled attitude all day kid, i'm just stating what I feel to be the truth. And these humdrum capricious definitions you illogically construct? Unconscious pre-meditation? Why even venture such a rediculous notion? The brain may very well antecedently predict musical output, but that's not improv pal. Right before it happens moment by moment...that's improv. I checked your page and I hands down have more experience, it's just fact. This is NOT an insult!

  • With regards to lyrical improvisation, it's obviously possible (hip-hop artists are the quintessential example of this), but I know Mayer well and I highly and suggestively doubt that this WASN'T planned. Writing a chorus quickly in your room before the show, and making it up clean on the spot are two different animals. Lastly with regards to that final passive-aggressive remark, i'll have to laugh it off. When you've listened and played as much as I have, you can then do the same.

  • Sounds like you're rocking to & fro on your own terminology and that doesn't leave you in a good spot. Improvisation is NOT pre-meditated, but seeing as the second part of your point on this IS correct, i'll chalk that up to a misnomer. I understand your point, but poor wording (but with respect, in this conversation the wording matters!). Pre-written or pre-meditated alike, this is what I see. Read my posts once more. I'm an ardent fan.

  • John mayer rocks...couldn't care less if that's improv or prewritten

  • The tabs are in the description!

  • @MelleB90

Thanks for the tab. Sounds and looks pretty good. The one thing i did notice though is he doesn't play the F# on the open d, making it xx023x instead of xx0232. Thats also how he plays the D(5) in Stupid Mouth.

  • @JeffandKmusic fixed, thanks!

  • Saying that HE prewrote that prior to ACTING like he didnt is like saying stevie ray vaughan prewrote every texas flood solo prior to going on stage. Which he plays almost every song differently. I mean its a bigoted remark. You have no idea as to whether or not if he did or didnt. Thats like me saying to you that youre full of shit when you play because all of your improv is prewritten. I cant say that because i could never know unless you played it exactly the same before. either way who cares

  • That's a horrible (and hyperbolic) analogy. I see where you're trying to go anyway. And my answer to you, is that I can tell the difference. I've seen enough Mayer (all music, and almost all interviews), written enough of my own songs (have an album), and understand improvisation. Lyrical improv is a different animal. In my professional opinion, it's more than obvious here. And yes I understand the implications of him lying to the audience (which, incidentally, I find true easily enough).

  • And to comment on your last sentiment of "who cares", I have never been in disagreement on that note. I think it's most definitely pre-written (most of it anyway). It's also clever and witty as fuck as all of his extended intros/outros and various comments. He's always been amazing to me and seemingly always will be...and i'm on the jazz snob side of the fence (i'll argue for Mayers genius until my dying day). So care not. But I still calls 'em as I sees 'em.

  • this is my favorite john mayer era i love this most. lol. everything after heavier things is just so different. Geat nonetheless

  • no that was on the spot, thats fucking amazing, mayer is a fucking machine, superhuman!!!!!

  • uh, when was this?

  • I believe that this performance took place in 2005.

  • his brother is probably even a more talented musicain not many peaple know of him but he is the legendary drummer jojo mayer he currently leads as one of the most respected drummers in the world check him out if you like drumming

  • Jojo Mayer is a great musician, but he's not related to John Mayer :)

  • @Draxx420 you are a retard

  • @Draxx420 wait john is realted to jojo mayer seriously

    ?

  • @MegaJackofhearts no they are unrelated

  • Wow! That was AMAZING! I've never seen that before, thanks for posting it...MalleB90 you rock! :)

  • i'm sorry but at 8:04 it looks like he's having his own party it's so funny!

  • I've watched this loads of times being a John Mayer Fan, but there is no way he's making those lyrics up on the spot i've tried man you just can't do it!

  • hes just that amazing!

  • dude he's JOHN MAYER, he can do anything he wants on stage...

freakin' music genius right here people!!

  • i knew a guy who could improv a whole song up on stage man some peaple have that kind of talent like some rappers for example have a amazing impov ability. I dont think this was all made up but you know man maybe you just gotta get a little better thats all

  • Yeah, they're pre-written.

  • NOPE.......this is when youre a real musician,

  • It's pre-written. I'm more of a loyalist than all you fan boys, I just know what i'm talking about. I've seen him improv before. He talks and speaks improvisationally almost ALL of the time for fuck sake. No one is a bigger proponent of this than me (check my page if you want improvisation or "real" musicianship). I could write a book on the subject. But this, unfortunately for the blind devotees, is pre-meditated at least to a heavy extent. Nothing at all wrong with that.

  • You're crazy. Being a songwriter myself. I've done it. I'm not trying to brag I'm just making a point that it's a pretty common thing. Some people just have the music and lyrics in their head all the time

  • To be honest, you can tell they're on the spot. Repeating lyrics. ya know. And the way he kind of just throws in filler

  • one day i will be mrs. john mayer

  • i like the look he does at 6:48 lol

and about the song well, im speachless

  • Comment removed

  • damn, this guy rocks

  • so sick. oh my god,

can anyone hook me up with the tab for this??

  • can i get a the tabs from anyone?

  • same\/hahahaha,if someones sendin tabs it would be much abliged if they were to go my way also:)

  • Can someone give me the tabs for the added chords please, i can't figure them out myself.

  • did someone say they had the tab for the improve chords? send 'em to me. very appreciated

  • Remember to add &fmt=18 behind the url to watch in high quality!

Added lyrics are in the description

  • Awesome! thx.

  • I am wondering why he needs to sit down and write songs when he can just freestyle like that and come up with something decent

  • Musical perfection...this guy is just amazing.

  • I think he was a little drunk

  • agreed haha

  • I do the opposite, I don't talk enough. Unfortunately some people never make it through my minefield :(

  • i feel your pain man. music is how i express myself

  • best ever

  • Can anyone send me a tab for this intro?

  • have u got it already ? Cos I havent tabbed this yet, but its pretty simple..

msg me if you still need it..

  • hey could you send me the tabs too?

  • its 4 chords, use ur ear.

  • Yeah, but he's adding some nasty extensions that can be hard to figure out ^^

Anyway, it sounds like Dmaj7 and Bmi9 are the problem children. What do you think?

  • me too please ha

  • did he jus come up wid dat song on the

top of his head while playing that tune??

like i guess u can call it freestyle right??

  • somewhat.. i read that he continuously thinks up these lines and stores them in his head..

so when its right, he gets them all out.. so it is somewhat off the cuff.. and somewhat not so off the cuff really..

    still brilliant anyhow..

  • J.J. Johnson is always on top of things.

  • jj johnson puts out fire with his kindness.

    I've seen it.

  • Very nice added lyrics. This is a song I can totally relate to. Seriously. It's my theme song. Everytime I say something stupid to a girl, and realize it, this song always goes through my head. :-)

  • mp3 file?

  • Anyone know of any tabs for this?

  • I know the tabs for the version on room for squares

  • great! i fucking love this. very solid improve. though im sure he had some of those lines written beforehand. thats totally fine to do! rappers do it all the time.

  • awesome improv here by John, also, a really great song with or without the added lyrics! :D Totally describes me and my luck with women lol

  • i swear this is so awsome (:

  • wow...anazing song sang by amazing singer

  • this is one of the most amazing pieces of improv I've ever seen...

  • this band is awesome for keeping up

  • to chulo

  • It can't be help though.

This is the stuff written on the spot. Honestly I really appreciate moment like this.

  • I agree, it does sound great though, Mayer's amazing

  • you don't like the key it's in... wtbf...

  • Your comment is........... TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!

  • can someone post the lyrics please, i like this start but i wanna know the words

  • Check the comment next to the video ;)

  • thanks

  • Does anyone know the chords he plays in the beginning of this song to the part he free verses?

  • I think its really cool and shows great talent, musicianship, and creativity to improv like this and turn into a very impressive show. Thanks for posting!

  • John, you really don't need to make out with the microphone, I'm sure we can hear you if you're an inch away. =3

  • Remember to add &fmt=18 at the end of the url in the address bar. It let's you watch in high quality!

  • You're my hero....lol it looks so better

  • i found the transit into 'my stupid mouth' a little awkward though; from a tonic major into a minor mid-count. the bassist just stopped playing for like a second or two... but the band really managed to catch on really quick, and that was really impressive. John Mayer was rambling, but it was sensible rambling so I was more impressed than anything else, haha..

  • this performance...is beyond words.

    :)

  • tabs anyone? please? pretty please?

  • i agree lol trying to work it out, almost got it

  • Where was this song performed and where can I get this version?

  • You might want to try to give John Mayer's other stuff a listen.

This is 3 or 4 years before the Rolling Stones article or something. Check out Who Did You Think I Was from the Where The Light Is dvd (and maybe the other John Mayer Trio songs) for example. You'll see he can do a lot more than just chords!

  • how much of this was improv, i'm having doubts that the lyrics are improv

  • its really no that hard to believe that someone can improv lyrics like those..just listen to common freestylin...

  • I have to think most of it was improv, I heard a live track where he asked the crowd for a topic then made up a song. Also the herbie hancock studio video on youtube, they talk to herbie and he said John was in the studio with him and just started rolling off lyrics on the spot to the music they made up, and a lot of it was actually used in the final version of stitched up.

  • If youve ever heard this guy just talk and have a conversation you wouldnt have a hard time, hes really intelligent and is always contemplating logical things in his head. i truly believe that stuff is off the top of his head.

  • do you really yhink john mayer only plays normal chords? or were you just joking?

  • you know what..i think you are wrong! sometimes he plays crazy stuff n sometimes calm mellow music, like in this video. When its mellow you gotta lay back on the crazy guitar drills! and if you ask me, rolling stones comparing frusciante to john was just to show that there are still real musicians (guitarists to be precise) out there who rely on musical talent to produce records and not designer labels, or their bone structures...

  • r u kidding, have to never listened to the john mayer trio or the continuum record. They did not base the "guitar god comment," on his room for squares album, do some research before making stupid commments

  • You're just a big idiot. It takes just as much, if not more, skill to improv chords AND lyrics at the same time, than just to shred the hell out of a guitar. There can only be so many hammer-ons and sweeps before shredding gets old.

That's not even including Mayer's soloing skills. Watch the one he did with Clapton in Crossroads, not to mention his own.

It's ignorant tards like you that mess up the industry. You're the one making a mockery of yourself.

  • Lol this was off his first record idiot... which is primarily pop acoustic songs. go to his try! album and try and talk shit

  • I'm with you right there...Try! is John's true soul. It's with out a doubt the best CD I've ever owned. Check out his "Live in Los Angeles" DVD!

  • Oh man.. If John actually improvd this whole thing.. (except for the original song of course).. i believe its about time i started to worship him..

  • my god i love this man more than anything in the whole worlddddddddddd

  • gosh i like it...wow

  • Note that this is almost 5 years ago!

  • This is such a talent... to make a sound and run with it spur of the moment.. He has a killer band... They also sound great... I love John Mayer... he gets better with time!!!

  • nice expansion on a fabulious song. i wish hed do this more often. its like a nice fresh coat of musical paint.

  • You're so right. I find that he does that quite often live, but rarely in this way.

I love it when he adds a few lines or a cool intro to a song and luckily he does that very often live. But turning an entire song around like this is pretty unique, and I love it.

It's the things like whistle solo's that can totally make me find a song even more special or in another way.

    Thanks for the music John!

  • Don't get me wrong, I greatly appreciate Dave Matthews along with a lot of other artists, but somehow John Mayer is the only one who really gets me with every song.

    I don't know a John Mayer song I don't like at all.

Justin Taylor is worth checking out too, and Newton Faulkner, and Donavon Frankenreiter etc ;)

  • WOW. Amazing

  • oooooze...... go eat a fucking dick

  • I kinda don't agree but would give you a thumbs up if I could. Cause your kewl shawty fa sho..

  • i get u..recently though im looking for beauty in simplicity..i feel like i've found it here...ur right it's very simple..voice is not amazing... lyrics are NOT improvised..but it sounds nice . and fuck them teeny boppers.

  • sounds like waiting on the world to change!!!!!

  • Simply wonderful.

  • yay i got the soundstage dvd!

now i can watch this if my internet doesn't work!

    go jm!

  • yay I'm gonna see him perform this evening!

    WHEEEEEEE!

  • can someone get me the opening tabs for this song?

  • Yea it is!!

  • pretty freaking amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • you are pretty freaking right! :P

I can keep on listening this version for hours on end without getting bored with it.

To think that it's all improvised (at least, he makes it look like it is)... Awesome!

  • you can tell its improvised because he shows is bass player his chords so he can follow the same progression, pretty sweet indeed!!!!

  • we gotta get this song on my ipod somehow...is there an audio version of this?? this is amazin...thanks

  • you can download a program called atube catcher, you can download with this program the youtube videos in mp3 format =)

    sorry for my english =P

  • can i please have the mp3?
