i found the transit into 'my stupid mouth' a little awkward though; from a tonic major into a minor mid-count. the bassist just stopped playing for like a second or two... but the band really managed to catch on really quick, and that was really impressive. John Mayer was rambling, but it was sensible rambling so I was more impressed than anything else, haha..

You might want to try to give John Mayer's other stuff a listen.
This is 3 or 4 years before the Rolling Stones article or something. Check out Who Did You Think I Was from the Where The Light Is dvd (and maybe the other John Mayer Trio songs) for example. You'll see he can do a lot more than just chords!
I have to think most of it was improv, I heard a live track where he asked the crowd for a topic then made up a song. Also the herbie hancock studio video on youtube, they talk to herbie and he said John was in the studio with him and just started rolling off lyrics on the spot to the music they made up, and a lot of it was actually used in the final version of stitched up.
If youve ever heard this guy just talk and have a conversation you wouldnt have a hard time, hes really intelligent and is always contemplating logical things in his head. i truly believe that stuff is off the top of his head.

You're so right. I find that he does that quite often live, but rarely in this way.
I love it when he adds a few lines or a cool intro to a song and luckily he does that very often live. But turning an entire song around like this is pretty unique, and I love it.
It's the things like whistle solo's that can totally make me find a song even more special or in another way.
Don't get me wrong, I greatly appreciate Dave Matthews along with a lot of other artists, but somehow John Mayer is the only one who really gets me with every song.

i found the transit into 'my stupid mouth' a little awkward though; from a tonic major into a minor mid-count. the bassist just stopped playing for like a second or two... but the band really managed to catch on really quick, and that was really impressive. John Mayer was rambling, but it was sensible rambling so I was more impressed than anything else, haha..

You might want to try to give John Mayer's other stuff a listen.
This is 3 or 4 years before the Rolling Stones article or something. Check out Who Did You Think I Was from the Where The Light Is dvd (and maybe the other John Mayer Trio songs) for example. You'll see he can do a lot more than just chords!

I have to think most of it was improv, I heard a live track where he asked the crowd for a topic then made up a song. Also the herbie hancock studio video on youtube, they talk to herbie and he said John was in the studio with him and just started rolling off lyrics on the spot to the music they made up, and a lot of it was actually used in the final version of stitched up.

you know what..i think you are wrong! sometimes he plays crazy stuff n sometimes calm mellow music, like in this video. When its mellow you gotta lay back on the crazy guitar drills! and if you ask me, rolling stones comparing frusciante to john was just to show that there are still real musicians (guitarists to be precise) out there who rely on musical talent to produce records and not designer labels, or their bone structures...

You're just a big idiot. It takes just as much, if not more, skill to improv chords AND lyrics at the same time, than just to shred the hell out of a guitar. There can only be so many hammer-ons and sweeps before shredding gets old.
That's not even including Mayer's soloing skills. Watch the one he did with Clapton in Crossroads, not to mention his own.
It's ignorant tards like you that mess up the industry. You're the one making a mockery of yourself.

This is such a talent... to make a sound and run with it spur of the moment.. He has a killer band... They also sound great... I love John Mayer... he gets better with time!!!

You're so right. I find that he does that quite often live, but rarely in this way.
I love it when he adds a few lines or a cool intro to a song and luckily he does that very often live. But turning an entire song around like this is pretty unique, and I love it.
It's the things like whistle solo's that can totally make me find a song even more special or in another way.

Don't get me wrong, I greatly appreciate Dave Matthews along with a lot of other artists, but somehow John Mayer is the only one who really gets me with every song.
I don't know a John Mayer song I don't like at all.
Justin Taylor is worth checking out too, and Newton Faulkner, and Donavon Frankenreiter etc ;)
