I keep meaning to go back to play this game, because I last played it when I was a very young kid, fresh off the back of beating Final Fantasy VII and Suikoden. This would definitely have rated up there among my favourite games if it wasn't for this God damn desert. I never got past it.
Nope this is easy for me, the one that is hard is when Ryu is in the dream world... I also found the life armor in the western part of the desert. Equip him with garr and beast spear.
Odd. I remember getting lost a couple times through my several playthroughs but I never had too much trouble with the desert. Got through it in a couple of days. Seemed I was given the right directions.
Surely I'm not the only one who saw oasis appear on the horizon after 4 or 5 nights, only to see it disappear as I walked towards it?? grrr lol, still one of my fave parts though
I'd like to take a minute here to just RAGE AT THE DANG DESERT OF DEATH FOR TAKING SO FREAKING LONG TO CROSS EVEN WHEN NOT TAKING THE ROUTE TO COME OUT OF IT WITH BOTH ITEMS! GRRRRR >_< Ok, now that that's over with...otherwise the desert had good loot bags and lots of good exp even for my party which was about 10 levels above where you'd normally be...
"I'm sure that if the guy gave you the correct directions, this RPG would be considered the best game of all time."
You sure that's the only reason? I know it's a major part of the game, but at least it's around the end. I heard that it leads you to a dead end with some good treasure though...
I'd be pretty pissed if that's the reason. :( I looked up one of the main reasons was the music, I think. At least the ratings seemed to be 7 or higher though.
The desert was the best part of the game because you were in it for so long. It let you reflect on your whole journey and gave you time to think about what you are doing and what is going to happen when you reach the end. At the point of the game where you had to cross the unknown sea to reach the other side of the world I got stuck. I was stuck for years. It bothered me so much that I even had dreams about what the world would look like. IMO the game wouldn't be the same without the desert.
Eh I dunno a lot of people say that horis gave you the wrong directions, but I followed his directions every time I plyed through the game and they worked fine for me. When he said (when you can see the evening star directly due west) he meant that at the same height on the screen as the north star (I came to find out).
You know, the guy actually gives the correct instruction when you talk to him at base camp. He just took the wrong page out of his walkthrough and gave you the notes for getting the Royal Sword instead.
@RokkumanDanmaku Same here, I was about to say the same thing. My friend gave me the game a long time ago along with the strategy guide. So I hardly ever got lost. It just said to follow a star, correct?
In this desert... i was crazy... when i found a ROYAL SWORD... that's was odd... but then... when i read the instructions... the paper inside the camp is different to the instructor's instructions... :P lol xD
I know I'm a minority when I say this, but I actually loved the Desert of Death. I dunno, it was just fun for me. One of my favorite areas in the game.
I feel the desert trek was awesome. It was tranquil and soothing to just take a break from the games puzzle battle puzzle battle puzzle battle.
All you had to do was follow the stars , soothing.
Funny story I went North for like 7 days and realised I should have turned after a few nights. I actually then went west instead of east lol for about 5 nights, then south west for 5 nights, then west again 5 nights and then north for 3 nights...Ninas max HP was 8 by then, thats less than the eye goos!
I can't believe you were stuck in the Desert of Death for that long; it only took me a week or so to figure it out. I know that Horis gave you different directions orally and on his notes. Even if it was an error in translation, it's still not difficult to figure out; you try both directions to see which one is correct.
@Pehc90 It's easy... if you follow the guide :P if you read the letter on the table in the tent... for some odd reason is incorrect... as if the game wants to get you lost :S
Because of the wrong directions and lack of internet back in the day, I was stuck in this part of the game for like half a year. Worst half year of my life as I wanted to quit but thank god my friend showed me the right directions. I killed that llama thingy and barely made it to the oasis. FML
I've always thought it was a translation error that made one be correct and the other wrong. Then again the guy might have been made to do. Either way he gives you the WRONG DIRECTIONS!

@AkumaUchitoru Heh, I was just joking around. BoF3 is a good game but I think it was a bit downrated because it wasn't in fancy 3D.

@KuroiKuroudo Something like that. It said follow certain stars for certain amount of nights or something.

This guy who gave you the wrong directions should have been killed afterwards the desert run :)
But it´s very hard to do - it was the first time i had to search for a walkthrough just for the desert.

It sucked, but I wondered, as long as the place was, whether or not there were hidden locales there. Are there?

There are two hidden treasures in the desert. As far as I remember, it's a sword and an armour.
