@zooby11isbambam you really not giving him the credit he deserves though, the groove IS there, just look at the things he does and try to understand why he's doing it. The problem with groove is its gets harder and harder to show as technical complexity rises.

How does he get his tom toms to sound so non-acoustic? I've been trying for years to get my drums to sound like a drum machine without spending $1000 on electronic drums:-) Seriously however, when I first heard Weck play live with Corea back in 1985 (were any of you commenters even alive then?!) it took days to scrape my jaw off the Rainbow Music Hall floor (that venue is now a walmart in denver). I went home and began transcribing his solos. His technique is flawless. His sound? Walmart

I talk too Mr. Weckl. and he said that he is playing singleply coated Remo ambassador, even on the bass batter!!

And he tunes his bottom head a bit higher than "normal"... But i think that Yamma drums Itself sounds alot more like eletronic drums than for an examble a Gretsch.

Dave can play, he's a technical beast, but there is no feeling no groove. Jojo Mayer can do it all and he's a much better player. So many musical phrases in that little sequence it's ridiculous!!!!

The best thing is to pick up Scott Kinsey's kinestetics, or Zenith Patrol VU. Ron Brunner and Thomas Pridgen are two technically amazing drummers, with feeling, timing and imagination. But always remember I said Dave is a technical beast!! I respect him6a

i dunno, i've never seen weckl get into complicated odd time signatures or polyrhythm stuff like danny carey does. and I doubt danny can't do latin just because his band focuses on progressive. Weckl is more superfluous anyway. TOOL is a minimalist band.

Because that's (for the most part) what it is, the 'Dave Weckl Band'. He is the lead. The drums only seem dominating because most music we're used to has a more traditional lead timbre, IE vocals or guitar. We'd never say that they're dominating.

I think this is probably a drum solo excerpt anyway, check out some of the album stuff, and you'll find that he can sit back in the groove aswell as take the lead, of course all YouTube videos of him will show his strongest (read dominating) sections!

Mr.Weckl is one of the reasons I play on a Yamaha kit....

If I didn't have sweaty palms when I play I would be using his signature Vic Firth sticks....but like Jack DeJonette's and Weckl's sticks they get slippery because of the paint :(
