  • My Favourite Atari Is My,

    Falcon 030.

  • Nice responses there Steve when it comes to The Atari 8 bit and 2600 Vader model.

As for your the second tag, some great games that if it's retro... that's it! BUT I don't want to be nit pickey... Star Wars arcade game as we all know you needed a steering device. Other than that your picks are great.

I want to respond to this and it's damn hard cause there were a few games most don't even know of unless really played them back then. = )

  • God dam that was a long Talkie... ha ha... I had to watch it in 3 sittings whilst wrapping ebay items!! ;o)

Nice selection of arcade titles dude. ;o)

  • Atari Portfolio, a netbook 20 years before they were popular.

  • pheonix, robotron 2085, defender, battlezone, metroid,asterooids,....oh such wonderful games & times! :-)..

  • @paulspydar :-( I just realized... no missile command (i put mission control wtf?> lol) cos it used the roller ball thingy..so i would choose donkey kong, ,& also Daruis instead of battlezone (battlezone is also excluded on control layout) or i would just have the same cab as you ! I would also swap for the climb in & sit down Starwars! oh the joy..hearing those classic 80`s sounds as I walk closer to the Arcade...& the hours i spent searching for dropped 10p`s & forgotten credits! lol

  • Hehehe as an 'ST man' I can remember those competitive days. Viva La Difference. Pity there's nothing like that today.

  • @paulpetroleum The nearest we have to that now is the PC / Mac / Linux argument... but it's not as much fun :)

  • Couldn't agree more about Jasonmoore. His videos make me laugh every time without fail.

  • i love what troubl8385 is doing here on youtube as well. i too hold him in high regard, great guy.

& lmao thanks for that shoutout man, it did make me smile :)

  • Nice to see your irrational disgust for the ST continuing on in 2011! ;) lol Joking aside then yeah, I guess you were either hardcore Amiga or ST and there wasn't much middle ground. Back then I was an ST man but i've long since embraced the Amiga and now everyones a winner! :)

  • I am gobsmacked! lol Cool? Me? Not likely, but thanks for the kind words! I truly appreciate it. Honestly. I know text doesn't really convey sincerity well, but assume that I am being totally sincere, because I am. :)

Oh, and it seems crass and presumptuous to suggest an adjective to describe my channel, but perhaps the word you were looking for was 'guileless'? I dunno. lol

And I too would pick Gyruss, and potentially Galaxian as well! I should give that tag some thought!

  • @niceandgames Guileless is a very good word for the task... and no, you're not remotely presumptuous for suggesting it.

I knew you'd be gobsmacked, but that's part of what makes you so cool :)

  • @SteveBenway I literally was, too! And then you said, I bet he'll be gobsmacked, and I thought, how'd he know?!? lol

Oh, and I forgot to say before that being compared to Atarileaf is a great compliment. I aspire to have videos as concise and informative as his!

  • I was rubbish at arcade games too. I could not even finish the first screen of Space Invaders. I was surprised by your 6 choices. No mention of Pac-Man, Phoenix , Donkey Kong , Zaxxon or Rommel/3D tanks.

  • @edwardszzz 3D Tanks (Battlezone) doesn't qualify, as it uses 2 sticks. I'm not a Pac-Man fan at all, and while those other games are good, they don't do it for me in the way the ones I chose do :)

  • I had an st once i gave it away but i would like to find another i always liked the look of them though i am an amiga fan .I got a bid on atari 600 xl just wished i had checked the spec before bidding only 16k of memory could be a problem .I had an atari portfolio useless device that looked cool mine went wrong in storage why i have no idea and sold it as faulty on ebay ..Have you seen the atari branded headphones that they sell in tesco.s they do in swindon anyway .

  • awesome friday talkie

  • Steve, the Arcade at Blackpool. Is it the one that used to be at the mouth of the tunnel that runs under the Pleasure Beach? If so, its now closed unfortunately.

  • @LeShark75 I don't remember a tunnel. It was on a corner, I think. Near a row of rather fancy looking buildings.. kinda like Disney Land done Northern English style.

  • What an epic Friday Talkie, you should be on the TV!

Some great TAG responses,i loved your reasoning for the arcade games you chose, and it was facinating hearing about your experiences in the arcades when these games were released.

  • great can game picks....and man, I am with you, Defender is amazing, but totally kicks my ass every time hah.

  • Kenny? Hahah.....I am sure you meant it in the best possssible taste! Hmmmm......did I really go out any buy the Sid Snot 7" vinyl single in the early 80s?! Yes and I probably still have it.

  • Arcade games from the late 70s and early 80s, had that other world sort of feeling and very magical as you say. Also unlike the later generations, as kids we (I'm 40) were the first generation to really play them, and we had no idea what was creating this awesome visual/audio experience. Unlike todays parents, ours had never seen a computer or a game, and if you excuse the pun they felt alienated by it all.

  • I respect your opinion Steve but I never really understood the whole Amiga vs ST thing, and even to this day the Amiga fans are hostile and unforgiving towards the ST. However from what I can see of the ST crowd, they have a more balanced appreciation for both computers.

  • When i saw GYRUSS appear my tummy did a flip!! Loved this game in my local arcade BITD. The music was great. And i lasted much longer on my 10p than i did on any other game in there. Loved Defender as well but the volume was set so high on it, that playing it caused everyone to take notice of you and come over and witness your 50secs of fame lol

  • Very nice Steve. You went over a lot of stuff in this video from talking about your favorite systems to game play vids, to your favorite top 6 arcade wish list games to shoutouts, pretty amazing stuff. I dont think anyone will be offended that you didnt choose their channel, I think you did the right thing by just talking about what you watch regularly.

  • I guess they can get away with souping up a song by JS Bach but did they actually rip off the arrangement from Sky named 'Toccata'?

  • @markvergeer I don't know. Being a complete heathen, I didn't know it was Bach. I just knew the 70s (80s?) rendition by Sky :)

  • epic Star Wars arcade game - the sound effects the graphics. Epic! star wars was huge back in the day.

  • I would choose very similar games actually. the Gyruss game music - lovely - is actually a sped up tune by JS Bach 'Tocatta something in fugue minor' LOL He may turn around in his grave

  • All I want to say is I forgot about your talkie then I noticed you uploaded it I clicked it and it is 48 minutes! I'm not complaining though.

  • @DemonOfGaming I'd say I got carried away, but I didn't. I just had a lot to say :)

  • I enjoyed your talk about your recommended channels, great video!

  • It's tie-toe, not tae-toe! How can you put asteroids in your multi-game cabinet, it uses a completely different type of screen? Your 6 games you 3 different types of screens, so it's not really possible.

  • @christo930 Given that it's a fantasy cab, I can put whatever the hell I like in it, within the restrictions set.

  • @SteveBenway No you can't, I said you can't so remake the video! Just kidding, I just wanted to nit-pick. Serves you right for making me watch a 48 minute video.

  • @christo930 I shall put your head in it, on a plate, then face it towards another monitor and make you watch all 48 minutes again :P

  • If I was going to chose a 2600, I would DEFINITELY choose a heavy sixer as they are by far the highest quality, especially the joysticks. The inside of the heavy sixer joystick is totally different than the later versions and they have spring based suspension system and feel much better and don't hurt your hands as much. My second choice of 2600 would be the junior because it has the best output screen quality.

  • not sure if that copy of Death Wish behind you is a game or movie but it inspired me to watch the film. Pretty good flick!

  • As per your wrestling query, you're better off not watching WWE these days. It's shit, they had a good storyline going for awhile with CM Punk, but as usual, they fucked it up

And TNA, OH BOY, do not get me started on that piece of drek. Think WCW, but a....ZILLION times worse.

  • "If you were an Amiga man, ST was the work of the devil", so true, well said sir... :D

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the shout-out, and I'm totally honored to be mentioned! Especially amongst such quality company as the other YouTubers you mention. You were one of the biggest reasons I started doing classic computing videos in the first place, so it's nice for things to come around like that.

And awesome video too, fun topics. The Atari machines are just awesome, and I'd agree with the XE series even though I enjoy the older designs much more. Nice choice in arcade machines, too!

  • I love to watch the talkie, and a long ass one makes up for not having one last week, nice one man.

Am I one of your peers Steve? Don't answer that I know I am.

  • Used to love wrestling on Super I think, UK channel, late 80's. (don't ask how)

Atari 7800 and Falcon, naturally. I had ST and MEGA STE, but Falcon.

There is always the Atari Portofolio...but no, Falcon :)

You can have driving games with just joystick and 6 buttons. Joystick=movement.

IT's fascinating how gaming-Arcade, the top of technology on the planet and it started from the underground, the dirty smelly places etc.

Anyway good video and I watched it in almost one go. :)

  • I had NO idea that they made games based on Charlie's Angels and Minority Report. You simply MUST let me know if the game is anywhere as good as the movie. I have not answered ROB's tag, because I am having the devil's own time with it. But, your answers are REALLY close to how I feel about a lot of the Atari stuff. Like you, I just could not choose an ST, for my love of the Amiga and other Commodore computers.

  • @pocketmego Curiously, the Amiga is the only Commodore product I'd choose over an Atari one. The ST is probably the only Atari product I don't like.

I think I know what the key ingredient is.... Jay Miner. He designed the 2600 chipset, the Atari 8 bit chipset, and the Amiga. So that doesn't account for the Lynx or the Jaguar... but then I just "like" those :)

  • Your selection of games tell me 2 things:

    1) You are a "gaming dinosaur".

    2) You like exactly the same games than I do! :-)

  • @DJKOZI I'd have included Sega Rally and Battlezone, as well as Star Wars, if there weren't controller restrictions :)

  • Great video, nice and long. The GameCube was a great little console.

  • @MrStephen182 I didn't plan on making it so long, it just came out that way :)

  • LOL!!!! I Robot. the only way to shoot Big Brothers eyeball up it's arse.

  • I'Robot was released in 1983.

  • @thepirategamerboy12 I wasn't far off in my guesstimate then :)

  • The empire strikes back for the arcade I think you should do a vid of. I think it is much better than the original.

  • @thepirategamerboy12 I don't like Empire Strikes Back at all. It was an upgrade kit, that turned a great game into a mediocre game. Needless to say, they didn't shift many units.

But each to their own :)

  • @thepirategamerboy12 Technically it is better but you really can't beat the original. You have to play Star Wars with the original arcade controls in my opinion, no joystick, no mouse, they don't have the same feel.

  • Imagine having a MAME cab with both MAMEHub and MAMEXT on it. :P Multiplayer online and regular on a real cab. Yay.

  • @wrestletube1 I wish I had the space for a mame cab here

  • Speaking of pro-wrestling Steve, the best WWF period was the 'snme' era from 1985 to 1991. And in runner-up spot was the 'attitude' era from 1998 to 2001.

Pro-wrestling has been poor for a long while now. All of them including TNA and ROH are feeling the pinch from Mixed Martial Arts big popularity nowadays.

  • @endofthelinejoel When I watched, The Rock, HHH, Mick Foley, Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Undertaker were bashing hell out of each other. I guess that was the Attitude era. Then WCW and ECW merged with WWF and it all got very silly.

I knew it wasn't "real", but for a while the storylines made it compelling.

  • YOU SOUND LIKE ASHENS! ☼ô☼

  • @pHr33kAcHu English ;)

  • @pHr33kAcHu I always thought Steve and Ashens have similar mannerisms.

  • Thank you so much for this really cool response to my tag. That part felt like a special edition of one of your regular gameplay videos.

You presented a fantastic selection of early arcade classics there. I'm sorry for the restrictions with regards to dedicated controllers but I was envisioning a cabinet that would be relatively inexpensive to build (without the game boards in it) and at the same time would be capable of playing a wide array of games.

  • @PsimanUK I'd never seen iRobot before and was totally blown away by it, especially when you consider the year it was released. It must have been created by the Michelangelo of video game designers because he was way ahead of his time.

The rest of the video was fantastic too. I haven't watch Jay Moore's channel (I'll check that out soon) but have to concur with what you said about the others. I always watch everything the others put out. Really happy to see AcornElectronTV getting a mention.

  • @PsimanUK The restrictions made it interesting, as I had to think more about my choices. You came up with an excellent tag video, so thank you :)

  • You really like space shooters but they all very simlar why not have more options.

  • @OwtDaftUK Because these are my favourite games that don't involve steering wheels, trackballs, or other special controllers. :)

  • Yay! The Moose returns!!! :D

Anyway: lot's of interesting things to think about in this one. I've never had experience of ANY of the Atari systems, tbh, so I can't feasibly comment on that. What I know of them is entirely limited to what I've seen on YouTube. :P

I'm disappointed in you, Steve: where on EARTH was Robotron in your cabinet nominations?!? ;)

I'm sure you'd have included Battletanks if you could as well (isn't that a trackball game? Might be mistaken).

    Also: maybe I'm (continued)

  • @AtsumaKarin mixing tags up but I thought you could have multiplayer games in this cabinet? I'm sure I saw a response by someone with multiplayer games...obviously, if you want single player games, that's fine, just wondered. :P

Maybe it's just me but I'm getting a very: "happy vibe" from your channel of late. Your commentary has been awesome recently and same with when you were shouting people out here...had a big beaming smile on my face for much of it! :D

    And yes: I noticed (continued)

  • @AtsumaKarin THAT picture of Jason's too. :P

Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention: I was quite surprised to see Gyruss in your selection - I LOVE that game too but you haven't done a SWILL of it, have you? (Except one on the GBA, perhaps?) Maybe a more up-to-date one would be just the ticket! :D

Shenmue, Shenmue, where for art thou, Shenmue? Will we EVER solve the mystery of the black car?!? :P

Anyway: good talkie and once again, keep up the great work with your channel! :)

  • @AtsumaKarin I hunted through my collection for a modern(ish) console version of Gyruss but couldn't find one, so had to resort to mame.

  • @AtsumaKarin You're correct; the tag was for a four player machine with one joystick for each player and six buttons. I guess like a TMNT cab but with six buttons instead of two. I'd love to hear what your choices would be. The tag is the most recent video on my channel if you are interested.

  • @AtsumaKarin I've been enjoying the games I've been playing, and finding them more conducive to good commentary. Big modern(ish) and complex games are much harder to commentate, coz you have to think more about that you're doing.

Also shouting out channels I'm more familiar is easier than one's I've found recently.

I guess with this video, I was on familiar ground with every aspect of it, which made it really enjoyable to make... probably partly why it's so long :D

  • @SteveBenway that certainly makes sense. Enjoying what you're doing is always half the battle. :)

P.S. I meant: "Battlezone" in my earlier comments. It's been a long week lol. :P

  • @AtsumaKarin Robotron requires 2 sticks. The rules specified 1 stick and six buttons.

  • @SteveBenway ah yes, I wasn't paying attention lol. As you were. :P

  • awsome talkie mate some good picks space ship shooting always kicks arse thats a given. The i robot game cant remember that from back in the day but i thought it looked awsome considering the time of release. your desription of early arcades was just how i remembered them when i was a kid. They were dark dingy places filled with dodgy looking people fantastic . The sound was awsome as well certain popular cabs you would hear in most arcades would somehow form a sountrack that you'd recognise .

  • @murrayefc78 The sound was a huge factor in the arcades back then. I really miss that... well... and every other aspect. I haven't found an arcade I liked in decades.

  • @SteveBenway I remember being on holiday with my mum and dad in the 80's in N.Wales and the sounds from the arcade machines were so distinct, Defender, Pac Man, Gorf, Ghosts and Goblins, it was like an electronic symphony! Things changed when Out Run came out in 86, the simple but effective sounds started to disappear :+(

  • @gollumondrugs Yup, they lost that gritty edgy feel and became rather polished.

  • I do like your choices for your 6 arcade games, bit of a theme you have going there of course. Galaxian is a particularly important one, as the hardware it was based on drove the next wave of games (you only have to look at the Mame roms listed as xx game on Galaxian hardware).

Have not ever seen iRobot - very cool for the time it was released.

And isn't sad that there is not one port version of Star Wars that is any good.

  • @electricadventures There's a pretty good version of Star Wars on the Amiga, but even then, it's just not the same as the real thing.

  • Glad your happy with em mate, hope you have fun with em :D

  • @TheSymbianFreak I'm very happy, and thanks again :)

I've sent you a PM on facebook. Didn't see your question till yesterday, coz FB didn't tell me you'd sent it..

  • Would you consider an Atari Falcon?

  • @senorverde09 In the real world, absolutely, given that I collect everything that I can. In the confines of this tag though, it's just a souped up ST, so no :)

  • Fantastic selection, Steve, and yeah if you could have 'Star Wars' in a proper sit-down cab why would you have anything else?!?!?! ;-)

  • @Martroid I can think of no reason :)

  • Buying my son (he's 4) a GameCube for Xmas. Be his first console and I'm quite excited to be honest! (coughs)

  • @lakepalmer Its a buzz, watching a young child the first time they see a video game.

I remember firing up Spyro: Enter The Dragonfly on PS2 and then handing it over to my niece. She's 15 now and a dedicated geek. My sister didn't thank me :D

  • @SteveBenway I'm bringing him in slowly. He's too much of a strop on the Wii and treats my psp like a brick! Some great deals on ebay (boxed almost new). He has his own tv in his room but I'm "attempting" to ration his playing! I'll have no chance I'm aware! My mate's lad is older and is addicted!

  • pleasuring the beach OHHHHHHH MAAAAN! Also I wanna see your thoughts on Battlefield 3 with some gameplay the beta is up now *giggles evilly*

  • @WorthyouruniverseHD My PC isn't up to running that, sadly. There isn't a PS3 beta on PSN is there?

  • @SteveBenway correct good sir. also 360 and such. on the PC i do not trust Origin, thing litterly takes all your personal info and well, sells it off beyond the point of common spybots.

  • @SteveBenway The PS3 Beta is available through PSN. Bluetonic78 had a nice little video up about it the other day as he got access to it a day or so earlier than most of us because he pre-ordered the game. I loved BF2 on the PC so I'm really looking forward to getting this one for my 360. Going to give CoD a miss this year and pick it up at a much later date when the price has bottomed out.

  • 70s arcades sound great, it's a shame I was born in '81 and never got to experience that.

My mental image of it is a typical bar looking area, smelling of tobacco smoke and alcohol, with pool tables and such, and some arcades in the corner.

  • @laffer35 Some here were very much like that, but many weren't bars, and those were the ones I frequented. They were darker, louder and had strangely sticky floors. They had wall to wall cabs and were filled with teens, some of whom would steal your pocket money at the first sign of weakness.

  • Excellent fridaytalkie! Very informative to say the least.

  • @gabbogabbo Thanks. I try :)

  • How come you don't own an arcade machine Steve? with your computer/console collection, I'm surprised you don't own a machine.

I mean "technically" JAMMA is a format!

  • @LarryBundyJr I don't have the money or the space for such a thing, sadly. And I value my marriage :)

  • @SteveBenway Lol, Well you can get them for abotu £50 if you know where to look, but yeah space is the killer for these things.

I'm still gutted I had to destroy my Wrestlefest machine back in the day for that reason :(

  • Ignore the complaining about the length...this got me through my last hour of working on Friday night!

Totally agree on your assessments of your shoutouts, especially LGR and Nice and Games. I know every time a new video by these guys pops up it will be entertaining and well thought out.

  • @cityside75 I haven't seen any complaints about the length... which is nice :)

  • Charlie's Angels on GC best game ever made, you're in for a treat. I actually tracked down a photo and name for one of the Jaguar designers, if I had the money and time I'd track him down and give him a swift kick in the bollocks. You want logic, the Amiga simply had a leg up over the ST hardware wise. It played more games, what kind of stupid argument is that? ^_^ My last local arcade was still dodgy in the 90s. Somebody likes space shooters? An enjoyable tour of your arcade recollections. :D

  • @TheBladeJunker I love space shooters :D

  • @UKRetroGames It did cross my mind as I said it that Clint might not know who Jack Dee is :)

I can't comment on the XEGS, as I don't have one, but also, would that count as a computer or a console?

Only a true geek would recognise the portfolio from such a subtle giveaway. You consistently earn my respect with your knowledge :D

  • @horrorbabe666 I had a similar experience with Asteroids at a camp site in Oxford. Don't ask me what we were doing camping in Oxford. It was a crappy holiday, but the Asteroids tabletop made up for it.

  • Good to see Acorn Electron TV up there! Some I watch, some I don't. I always think it's good to tell others about other peoples YouTube content. To get past the mass of videos you need to do, I suggest that you upload more than one in a day, I do some times.

  • @TheEPROM9 I had considered doing more than one a day, but the trouble with that is, a lot of them just won't get watched. I already suffer in terms of views compared to other channels, just by uploading one every day. People miss them, and don't go back and catch up. Can't fault them... but if having the vids seen is the purpose of making them... no sense in reducing the chances of them being seen.

  • I think all the games you chose are pre-JAMMA, but you can get adaptors so they can work in a JAMMA cab. Not sure if it will work with vector games though (e.g. Asteroids).

  • @shaurz I had a feeling they might not be, but I think they still qualify, given their control method. And if not... I don't care... lol :)

  • Wow, this is like The Directors cut of talkies? LOL

Great response to Rob, interesting choice, untill you said what it was I actually said tyo my self wow I don't remember the ST being so small, I guess I was a tiny child! lol

The Dog was probably barking cos he heard you talking about his bollocks! lol I'll be honest I never even heard of The Portfolio untill this video, by the way considering you were talking I thought you did quite good on Galaxian. Great tag responses and talkie

  • @lawnboyspost1975 I hadn't planned on it being so long... it just came out that way... lol.

That wasn't an ST, it was a 65XE, so yeah, it would look smaller than you remember the ST being :)

  • The rave version of Toccata. My jack russell hates rave music...and so do...

  • @SPINNYFUCK Heh... not a fan of rave myself.

  • Totally agree on your shoutouts, by the way... all awesome channels and cool guys! One thing you didn't mention about Nice and Games that I couldn't help but point out is his intro. The Nice and Games theme song seems to be specifically engineered to make one grin. I subscribed before I even finished watching the first video. :)

  • @HiroGaems Good point. His music sets you up perfectly for the mood of whatever video he's got in store.

  • Funny you should bring up the Star Wars arcade game and Gamecube in the same video... I recently got a copy of the Rebel Strike preview disc for Gamecube. I normally wouldn't have cared about such a thing, but it includes a very well-emulated version of the arcade game on the disc! I'm terrible at it, but it's neat to have it in some officially-sanctioned, physical form.

  • @HiroGaems A few people have mentioned that version, though I've never seen it. Wouldn't be any closer to the cab than mame, just due to the controller on the cab. I just wish someone would market one... or re-release the game on a modern console with a custom controller based on the cab.

  • I commented on jasonmoore's comments about his huge gunboats and he gave me tips on how to get buff like him...hence i love him.

  • @madcapoperator Jason rocks :)

  • Charles Angles is the worst game on the GC mate dont expect much. STs ARE the work of the devil Amigas all the way.....

  • @Rockythefishman Should be fun making a video of C.E. then :D

  • Awesome response STEVE, Please submit as an actual response if you have not already, I will post this in my Facebook group also THANK!

  • @MaximumRD Thanks, and... done :)

  • An hour long Friday talkie?

That fine, it's gonna take me a bit to get through this though...

  • @17R3W Making up for last week :)

  • Second! There... now stop it.

  • First! Just so that the next person who tries that fails, coz it's lame :P

  • @SteveBenway First to respond to the first comment! Betcha didn't think of that! (Actually that's what I usually do to people who do the first thing on my videos. Doesn't really happen that much any more)

  • @Croooow111 I sometimes just delete them, sometimes I berate them, and sometimes I just ignore them. I never understand them though :)

  • @SteveBenway firsting your own video, you diabolical madman!

Amiga all the way. No explanations needed.
