As a cellist...you can tell that he has a different, better quality cello in the mature recording because the sound is a lot richer, and a much better even tone in both the treble and the bass sections.

I love the subtle differences in the recordings. The mature is a bit faster and he holds the pauses a bit longer. It makes the song have 2 different meanings or stories. I almost like the younger recording better. Most definitely my favorite cello arrangement.

Wow great piece, it's really interesting to pick up on the contrasts in how he is playing it in the mature version where his skill is even greater. The last measures when his playing really high notes on the cello seem more refined.

Don't you hate how Orchestra is never a giant part in events?Always band.I remember in Middle school i woud get veyr angry that band got more attention than Orchestra, my orchestra group hardly had any in-school performances, one time the principle forgot all about the orchestra and only the band played at this one ceremony.Sure he said sorry but it still got me mad.Band always ahd mroe meember cuz not very many kids think orchestra is cool. Yes there is a G flat major and there is a D flat major and A flat major and C flat major.

no, its not in g flat major. Yo yo ma's first version was tuned to a 440 mhz A. His second version was tuned to a 415 mhz A, which is what they tuned to in the baroque era. So, both are in g major, but one is tuned baroque while the other isn't.

Baroque tuning ranges from 380 to 480. Although 440 COULD be what Bach wanted, it's highly unlikely. 415 is merely a standard baroque tuning and not necessarily what they used back then. Point is, G Major now could be G flat or G sharp.

It's not in Gb major (you could think of it as G flat-sharp major, but that's not really how they think about it). It's actually in "baroque pitch," 1/4 step below our current system (A is 415Hz, as opposed to 440).
