I know there was a seperate whisper track recorded for Riders On The Storm & used for background vocals(utterly amazing especially for the time) & JIm definitely sang it, but this doesn't sound like him whispering. Then again I've never heard Jim whisper before.
Interesting. I can definitely here this without manipulating the song's tracks or playing around with my speakers. I prefer the original songs in their natural state.
For those doubting the authenticity of this video, check out my adobe audition session showing all 4 channels from the quad mix being played/displayed turned on/off. Great upload to the original poster.
Makes perfect sense now -- and even more so considering that Jim Morrison had been a film student before letting The Doors loose on the world; he would of course have known of the history involved.
@smartalek1 In the old days of Hollywood actors were under contract to particular studios who produced films with them in it, usually with others to whom they'd become accustomed to working with and shared a collegial relationship. On occasion however, a studio mogul might ship off an actor to another studio "on loan" to perform with others to whom they weren't so accustomed.

hearing this track on lsd 20 years ago (with the lights out) i could hear the whisper track very clearly sensory depravation works on acid ..i totally broke through that nite thanx to this track.. outstanding album imo this is the doors finest hour
@RayManzarekGod Yeah RMG, I've heard them on the radio before. If you can't really hear it- pop in the ol' iPod and crank it. There they are, and they add a cool effect!
Great. I heard it done this waywhen the quad LP came out but that was eons ago, We loved it then, it's still so cool now. Thanks for the effort. The Doors are greatest of the greatest.
Thanks for your work. It was much appreciated. I have the Doors' quad album and knew some of the mixes were slightly different, but I don't have a quad system. Any plans to put other songs from the album online?
I can always hear the whisper on the original...any true Doors fan knows its there. This was a pure genius of a track..flawless. Manzarek is briliant as are Krieger and Densmore..Morrisons vocal is like silk...
A relatively unknown fact about this song is that originally, Jim chanted "Riders on the Storm" Eight times near the end of the song. The song was supposed to fade out during the chants.
Somebody, possibly Manzerek eventually decided not to do that ending. There is a somewhat noticeable edit after the chants - at which point the instruments fade away and all that's left is the tinkling of the organ and the rain effects.
Recorded in 1971 at Sunset Sound Studios. Recorded to 1" Eight Track Master Tape Track 1 - Lead Vocal Track 2 - Organ Track 3 - Bass Guitar Track 4 - Whisper Vocal Track 5 - Drums Track 6 - Electric Guitar Track 7 - Conga Drum Track 8 - Rain/Wind/Sound Effects The whisper vocal has always been part of the song. In the Quadraphonic version, Jim's regular vocal comes from the front channels while the whisper vocal is in the rear. Bruce Botnik originally mixed both Stereo and Quad versions.
this is a great song but the the video could be up dated i think but hey i am just a 16 year old person and your the one who has gone and put your time in to put this great song on youtube
Don't pay any attention to all these dickheads, slightlymentholated, if you listen carefully to the original, you'll hear this track, but people just don't know how to listen to music anymore.
If you people ,who didn't know it, really listen to the original track you can hear both the melody voice track and THIS whisper track which is overdubbed. Part of what gives the vocals their haunting quality.
ok i am the stupid ass..if that makes you feel better about yourself..but this track is not worth listing to in my opinion...you have yours and i have mine opinion..leave it at that
this is lame man.. why cant i just find the actually regular version.. instead i keep getting disapointed by ppl disgracing this song.. like a month ago i could find it easy but now i cant find it for shit
I always thought the whispers blended with Morrison's actual voice was one of the coolest (and simplest) double-tracking tricks ever put to tape. This song is otherworldy.
thanks for putting this up, a completley new experience of the all time classic, I can picture myself driving through the desert with the wispering ghost of Jim

@javio99 this isn't fake. This is Jims whisper vox that were overdubbed and can clearly be heard on the original mix.

This is as painful to listen to as it must have been for him to sing. Still, damn, Densmore was/is a great rock drummer.

Oh, almost forgot (rude of me):
THANK you, slightlymentholated, for the work of assembling this mix and posting it here. Totally different perspective on this seminal work.

This is a phenomenal work, def one of the 30+ tracks on my Top-10-ATF-Doors-Songs list.
But I have never understood what "an actor out on loan" is supposed to mean.
For years I thought it was "an actor out of role," then "an actor out alone."
Little help anyone?

This is surely "the" greatest Doors hit.The
Poetry and the Music combine to make this a
must in just about any Top Ten in the World.
Jim was never to reach his peak as the hectic
diet of Barbs and Jack Daniels took their toll.A great shame,I hear he did become very petulant toward the end of his life.Given his
youth and the way he had made it despite his
Fathers protestations that (he would "never"
ammount to anything with Music),well Jim Showed them all didn't he and then some.
