It is heartwarming to hear conversations like this. People should take little more time to say what they have to say. Speaking calmly, with decent language, without rush and with lot of kindness, politeness and smiling. And also take more time to listen as calmly, without interrupting others. Most people speak like Vicky Pollard nowadays, and either mumbling or too loud.
While I originally began watching these comedy sketches because of Hugh Laurie, I must admit that Fry has quite a bit more satirical prowess. THESE ones in particular I watch continuously because, well, Tony and Control are simply way too cute. Aww ^j^
"Telescupe" must me a code name for something very complicated and technologically good considering what the device allows you to do. Observe a fellow from quite a long distance away as if he was standing in the room with you, while he is, in fact, not standing in the room? Gosh!
I had to do a double-take, cos it looks like a photo of the Beatles on Plymouth Hoe behind Control sat at his desk, but the images don't match up. I reckon it's a conspiracy that either Hugh or Stephen are really dead.
In many of the John le Carre spy novels, "Control" was the code name for the previous head of British intelligence. Not sure if he's the inspiration, but maybe considering the spy theme.
Among all the Hugh and Laurie sketches, the ones about "Control and Tony" is by far my favourites. Hilarious jab at the stereotype that the British are all controlled, mild-mannered, polite and frequently utter the word "gosh!".
Anywho, I do have a soft spot for Peter and John, chugging enormous amounts of whisky and cursing about that bloddy Marjorie taking over the company. A close second.
I totally agree that they are the best sketches! I'd love to be able to get away with such relaxed and pointless conversations in such serious situations.
So this is basically where Moss' voice was born

Seems like a really cheap advertisement for a "telescupe".

Or just survey, as that is often used for the very same purpose.

What does Fry say? "Could you stop keeping us under surv..." what? It sounds like it should be surveillance but the word is too short.
