There's nothing more poignant then a tragic failure. This along with the Robert Scott Antarctic expedition, are two of the saddest, most depressing stories in polar exploration.
Could the cuts that were made to the hands and feet also have been made as a result of gangrenous extremity tissue being removed prior to consumption, which the cannibalistic sailors might have known was inedible?
The severe artic conditions might have been responsible for frostbite - as eluded to earlier in the download.
Gangrene and severe frostbite are possibilities but there is also one other chilling possiblity sailors were begining to go mad with hunger and sickness and were murdering their comrades for food. As for the condition of the sailors it's possible they were covered with soot from the boiler, in a desperate attempt to stay warm

@Bhuttmanandsniffy - The cuts were found on bones under an electron microscrope. They were in a fashion that indicated they were made by knives.

A recent study suggest that because of the sad isolation and long greasy hair the cuts were self inflicted. Proving they were the first emos.

Gangrene is actually hard to get in arctic temperatures - the cold slows its onset.
