Thank you SOO much for telling people about "reaming". That tool is called a reamer and the reason you do it for water piping is not because it slows your water down but because water travels at a very high velocity(typically 8 feet per second max in most State Plumbing Codes). Anyway, the turbulence created by moving water jumping this lip creates "erosion and corrosion" and will literally take a new joint and eat it away in a very short period of time causing it to leak.
One word, tool!
