  • When I see all this I just think, man we could have done this soo much sooner. Really we were so dependent on oil for so long it's almost laughable.

  • the grill works for the same purpose that you get in the gas powered vehicles.its just this one use coolant for the batteries.

  • Beautiful car!!

  • Does anyone know why there's a grill?

  • @BumbleBeeGS the one that plugs into a standard outlet takes 4 hours to charge. even with a transformer, the total amount of power being transferred will be the same.

  • @BumbleBeeGS it is standard but the thing is you cant find a place that supports that kind of voltage. its not as common as a gas station.

  • Doesn't Hemi mean Hemispherical? Hmmm.

  • im putting my reserve fee down this year. The wife agrees with me, She is super smart and i trust her 100%. If she is agreeing to pay near 70k for a car that for us will pay itself off within 8-10 years, then i know for fact somthing is VERY good about it. Yes, the car will pay itself off, you do the math . THIS is REMARKABLE. welcome to the space age=) Up and coming in the furute will be NUCULAR FUSION. now that will be SICK. FUND NUCULAR FUSION PEOPLE. the more we fund it the faster its here.

  • @BumbleBeeGS ha ok i should have specified a traditional saloon rather than a souped up muscle car

  • Now, an American car that buyers in Europe and Japan will love. Kudos America

  • Me three!

  • This is such a great direction that all automakers should be heading in. Imagine for a moment if Tesla had the resources that say GM or Ford have. Model S would be that much better, mileage, performance and cost would certainly be much more impressive. But as it stands the Tesla company has it spot on. I only hope that when this car comes out the public will be able to afford this car

  • @tool5150 Well you can thank the U.S. Government for bailing out the failure that is GM. Now, we could have a bigger market share and freed up capital for Tesla and other startups to expand.

  • I want one!

  • @mozbius ME TOO !!!

  • America you are soooooo fucking great. OMFG WTF are you talking about?

  • I like that it's innovative and has a fresh look, but isn't weird like some concept cars

  • The amount of fossil fuel needed to propel this car is still the same as a gasoline car. The grid has to be backed by coal power plants (at least for the next 40 years) with about 35% efficiency in converting to electricity. The grid itself has about 90% efficiency. Electric engine in there is a relatively small one (compared to its stationary siblings). I would guess 90% efficiency.

    0.35*0.9*0.9= 28.35% overall efficiency

That is about the level of any gasoline car (cudos on local em. tho)

  • @Xylancer this is assuming you live in the states...where I live, 95% of the energy is hydroelectricity. In a lot of places, the energy is nuclear. So, it does indeed take much less fossil fuel for this car in many places.

  • @maximusben1

You certainly are right. I currently live in the states. I guess I was thinking too much from my perspective. I would still like to encourage people to think about what they are buying and its ecological impact instead of blindly buying the latest trend (*cough*Prius).

    ...Hmm...going nuclear...I like the way you're thinking^^

  • @maximusben1

    You're from Quebec right?

  • @JaSt321 yes i am!

  • @maximusben1

It's good to live in a place where the things you do in your home do little to contribute global warming, I can't think of any GGs caused by hydroelectric plants besides some methane from plants and fish killed by the plants. Here in ON we still get some of our power from coal.

  • @Xylancer economic and environmental sustainability will be properly addressed by monetary and fiscal policies

  • @lvildos

You cannot actually think the government is going to handle that the right way. I have yet to come across any political organization with a GOOD engineering advisor.

  • @Xylancer if it cannot be achieved then popular sovereignty must be exercised

  • @lvildos Do you always go on and leave completely generalized replies containing information well known to the educated public. (with fancy phrasing)

  • @Xylancer my reply to you is just relaxed dialog, intended recipients are not the educated but for the yet uneducated to witness it

  • @Xylancer

one could rig up a solar panel bank to a charger for the car...no ?

    (completely off the grid)

  • @ZebZachary Absolutely possible. People already do it with certain E-cars.

  • @Nichen Thanks.

  • If all these cars needs a new gigantic battery every 4 years (a guess) this will result in a less "green" car than whats seemingly apparent.

Provided that they cannot recycled very efficiently will discarding one of these batteries every 4 years be better for the environment than using gasoline (efficient-car) for 4 years and how much better? Do we have an expert?

  • @rasmusmaach Are you afraid of this company? They use lithium-ion batteries...they are not dagnerous to the environment and can be recycled to 97%. You think they just toss it away? No, these batteries are worth a LOT of money. And they do not last 4 years...it's 7+ years at least. They have already tested the batteries and confirmed it.

  • @rasmusmaach Check out Tesla blogs, they can almost fully recycle this battery (every 10yrs) it's at teslamotors . com

  • @rasmusmaach the battery lasts 10 years and they come with a warranty...and the company has a special program for battery disposal..however if someone were to just dump the old battery in the garbage its not harmful at all to the environment because it has no dangerous toxins whatsoever...

  • People are concerned about the expenses for getting a new battery - but what do we do with the old one? Can they be recycled (and to what degree?)?

I understand that batteries are a huge issue for the environment.

  • @rasmusmaach the company takes the batteries back and replaces it for you-battery lasts 10 years and it comes with a warranty -so you don't have to worry about recycling..they take care of that...and these are lithium ion batteries, so even if someone does just dump the empty battery in the trash its not harmful at all to the environment since it has no dangerous toxins whatsoever

  • God that is gorgeous. The fact that it's electric and not terribly expensive only make it that much more appealing. And the best part is that it's an all-American company with American employees and a Californian factory/headquarters. I'm just waiting for the launch date.

  • @kurtthewurt

    "not terribly expensive" ?!?

what fantasy land do you live in , buddy ?

    get reaL.

  • @ZebZachary this car is 49k with the tax incentive included...and with all the gas savings it only costs as much as having a 25k ford taurus....so maybe thats not terribly expensive..lol

  • @zachem66

    maybe not for you....for me...it's outrageous !

  • @ZebZachary wow that was a quick response! and its only been 6 months!! LOL i dont even remember making this comment

  • make it affordable now

  • @koteshub

    i'm with you, buddy.

  • IMO this is really awesome. The only problem is how long it takes to charge. even with their experimental charging system, it takes 45 mins to fully charge. If they can get that time under 10 mins, then it would be able to actually compete with gasoline models.

  • @hahaifartedagain

244 miles per charge. That's enough to do basic day-to-day activities, and then some. Even if you're going cross-country, drive in the day, charge at night. No biggie.

  • @hahaifartedagain You're not getting the point. You need to shift the way you think about "renergizing" your mode of transportation. The EV revolution will require people to change. Also, there's nothing wrong with stopping for 45 minutes to recharge on an extended trip. We must always also remember that the average American drives 27 miles a day. That's it. Forget about your "what about the long trip?" What about it? Rent an ICE car, beat the hell out of it on your trip and then return

  • awesome, We are in the 21st century with enconomic hard times yet we drive 20% efficient gas cars making deadly exhaust and use 60% imported oil.

This is what the future should have been 10 years ago. Tesla is doing what no company has done before and ding it well. Solar on your home and a Tesla in the driveway and American is free again to prosper and grow.

  • They should make an all carbon fiber option. Carbon Fiber would make the care 20 - 30 % more fuel efficient which would equate to about 360 - 380 miles on a full charge if you get the 300 miles battery pack. It would significantly drive up costs though and carbon fiber doesn't recycle easily. High end consumers would eat up the costs thought bringing it down for everyone else. Also I would appreciate a touch button option instead of the giant touch screen. If your driving you would look away.

  • @tzbnks yes why not Carbon Fiber its stronger and lighter, but i didnt know it was more expensive? but the more people buy it i assume it would be cheaper.

  • Well I know what my next car will be.

  • Guys let's buy some shares from Tesla Motors. It's called TSLA on Nasdaq.

  • The first American car that I really want to get.. Good job Tesla, hopefully I can work for them in the future ^_^

  • If i was rich i will buy one of these things.

  • I would like to buy that car, if I could afford it...

  • this is the beginning

  • Just gotta love the Tesla Model S. A smack right in the face of those oil-corrupted car companies. Happy that Exxon or any of the other oil companies didn't manage to buy Tesla Motors just to shut it down.

  • simply the best american car ever yet. even their own roadster cannot match this car in terms of beauty in design, practicality, and functionality. i mean, look at the thing. it's like a car that has exterior design of an aston martin, interior of an acura or lexus, speed of a bmw or mb, and the best fuel economy in the world that prius would go home ashamed and cry itself to sleep. The best part, it's only priced 50000, and with the tax return and gas money saved, this is priced like hyundai.

  • so every friggin citizen buys drives an electric car and all of us stuck in traffic sitting in our electric gizmo car just like what already is on our freeways on monday morning at the moment

the solution is not the car its a bigger car= a rail car=trolley on every major street

  • i thought GM was the Future !!

    LOL 10 X OVER !!!

GM said there's no market for expensive electric cars they were 20 years ahead with the EV-1 but they crushed their future with it ! pure genious !

  • Electric cars can save a whole lot work and energy. And a whole lot of money. Two cents a mile. That way the world can focus on other things.

No more need for motor oil. No more oil change. No more tune ups. No need for a transmission or an engine. No need for transmission fluid. No more need for gasoline. No need for making gasoline. No need for transporting gasoline. No need for pollution.

  • My plan is to basically pay nothing at all for the electricity, only pay for my windmill and my solarpanels on the roof.

I will make my own electricity with wind and solar and use the surplus for my house. I can't wait for this. This is one hell of a revolution.

  • Can a solar panel on your roof alone provide electricity for your entire house for every day? That also means charging your car or using household tools? If not, how practical will the electricity you get out of solar panel be in terms of usage??? Meaning what can be done out of it?

  • A cheaper, uglier version with basic amenities and features will be coming too.

  • the bluestar is in development. gonna cost 20000-30000$

  • Electric cars = THE ONLY VIABLE SOLUTION. OMG by the ways guys have you seen the rise in petrolprices the last days?

  • @Nichen lol I meant by the way not by the ways

  • dump fossil fuel, oil and rusian mfs..

  • Comment removed

  • right about baterry pack but 2 battery packs is less then 2 or 3 fuel tank in the air per months and most battery pack are recyclable. However i dont know if the one they use in the tesla will be recyclable.

I was dreaming for this car 30 years ago i just hope i will have enuf cash to buy one.

  • The current one they use in the Tesla Roadster is recyclable and non-toxic.

  • @kikibortok

They are working very hard to create recyclable batteries. They have succeeded with smaller applications like phones and computers, i can only imagine cars would be next!!

GO ELECTRIC! FIGHT AGAINST HYDROGEN!!!!! DOWN WITH OIL!

  • @fipfapfallywap Only issue is to get people to actually recycle them.

  • From what I understand LIPO batteries, LIo batteries are 100% reciclable.

  • considering the amount of pollution that is being released to the environment, electric cars will help the earth. GM had this car ten years ago and they decided to kill it and replace it with the H2. but the only issue i have is waste. instead of housing old recyclable car parts in our junkyards, we will be stacking battery packs (acid) instead. the way batteries lose its charge overtime, we might go through 2 battery packs per car ownership. does your phone still hold its charge like before?

  • Come on guys let's support Tesla Motors and buy some shares and be 180% sure that THIS DREAM WILL COME TRUE IN 2012.

  • AMERICA GIVE YOURSELF A PAT ON THE BACK

You did what no american company has done for about 50 years, made a brilliant saloon car....People actually want to buy an american made and designed car! You guys should be supporting this start-up

  • dude...i'm 15...if i had $50,000 right now, i would order this in an instant.

  • That plus, smoothness, less noise and vibrations, full torque @ 0 rpm. Regenerative braking, and 0-60 in 5.7 seconds, ideal for traffic light stops. Accelerates like and rc electric car with 3-phase motor if you ever played one.

  • THIS IS THE FUTURE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!

but the point really is its reliability. how long will the motor and the battery last? how much would those cost for maintanence? as long as they last and cost same like today's gasoline cars, Tesla Model S will be more than PERFECT!!

  • @zivchen4ever

Bare in mind its not a Tamya car with double A batteries. It has pretty good specs on the website.

  • the maintainance and electricity will cost tenfold less than a gasoline engine. A 3-phase ac motor has only one moving part - the rotor. You dont change engine oils, you dont change spark plugs, air filtrs. No valve adjustments, no timing belt,. 1 speed transmission. Just a aluminium casing 600V 3-phase motor with copper rotor, plus inverter plus batteries. The motor has 90%efficientcy, and the batteries can last as much as 50000 miles or more.

  • @NoArbitraryImpose I believe they can actually last 100 000+ miles :)

  • The batteries are covered under the vehicle 100,000 miles warranty. So, what is there to be scared of?

Electric motors last much longer than gasoline motors. probably converting to around 300K to 500K miles roughly. Even then, replace the brushes and maybe the copper winding and it is as good as new :)

You can't get that kind of reliability from an internal combustion engine from any sports sedan with SUV specs boot space and does 0-60 in 5.6 secs.

  • @zivchen4ever im pretty sure that its supposed to be every 5 years ir 100000 miles and after about 50000 miles you experience 70 of the performance levels when new

  • $50,000 price tag

Batterys are suppose to last 5 to 7 years, 10 if properly cared for, with a replacement cost of

5k which in the end it still wayyyyyy cheaper that what you pay for fuel over 5 ,7 or 10 years.

  • @zivchen4ever tesla will costs LESS the a gasoline car, and tesla will be the future for all the countries in the world, not just for the usa, tesla is already more then perfect

  • @zivchen4ever the motor is built to last forever assuming 20-25 years and the batteries last 5 years or 100k miles depending on which comes first until they have to be replaced

  • @zivchen4ever

I wouldnt worry to much about reliabilty. Electric vehicles are immensly reliable. VERY VERY few moving parts. No oil changes. the regular maintence will be brakes and tires. becuase of regenetive braking the brakes will last longer. Batteries will be expensive but i wouldnt worry bout those till about 120,000 miles.

  • @SPYINC the batteries wear out after some time right?

  • @zivchen4ever Well the Chevy Volt's battery lasts about 5 years and 5-10k to replace I don't know about this battery but i hope it lasts longer

  • @AnonymoussourceL0L 7 years, 100k (which ever comes first). And even then, the battery isn't dead, it just holds less charge.

    I think it's pretty badass

  • @zivchen4ever i read on wikipedia (i know its not always 100% factual) that Tesla is planning on having three options for battery packs, allowing customers to select from 160 mi (260 km), 230 mi (370 km) or 300 mi (480 km) per charge before it must be recharged using a conventional 120 volt, 240 volt or some 480 volt outlets. which if you plug it in when you get home, shouldnt be to much of a problem.

  • @zivchen4ever the battery can last 10 years and it comes with a warranty...and the maintenance should be drastically less because compared to a conventional car this thing has just has a motor powered by the battery which makes the wheels turn...so it has less traditional hardware and its completely software controlled...and it's supposed to have in-car 3g connectivity...so whats the worst that can happen? maybe it can get a virus or someone can hack it? LOL

  • @zivchen4ever USA and the whole world! =) About the motor, electric motors have much higher reliability, since there are almost no moving parts, nor friction. There are no oils, filters or other things to change. The only thing less good at it, should be the batteries, expensive and they have to be replaced in 4-8 years, or 100.000 miles aprox.

  • @zivchen4ever Future of the world u mean right? not just the good of the USA.....right?

  • @zivchen4ever Battery will last at least 5 years, possibly a decade. The charge capacity will decrease a bit in this time, but not by that much.

Maintenance will be far less than a conventional gas motor due to less moving parts. Less friction and heat. Less maintenance.

  • Don't hold your breath for Ford, Toyota, VW or Volvo to make an electric car. It would show their gas vehicles as dirty and bad for the environment. Watch "Who Killed the Electric Car" for further explanation.

  • wow I did not know it was on letterman

  • Because tesla motors has no real concurent and they make their cars manually i think that the car is overpriced and a little to much for me. I'll wait when ford, toyota or VW will begin mass production of electric cars (hope will be soon). But i really want a volvo electric version :)

  • @markmd9 Watch Part 2. The cost of the car is ofset by the cost of the fuel.

Ends up costing the same as a Ford Taurus I think they said.

  • gimmie!!! when does this car get released?

  • NICE!!!!

  • Styling is delicious. Anyone know the designer who is credited? Is it Fisker?

  • You get the look of ASTON MARTIN plus MASERATI... WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF A FERRARI SEDAN AT THE PRICE OF TWO PRIUS.... MAKES A LOT OF SENSE....

  • This is a very friggin hot presentation of the Model S

  • totally dude!

  • fizzizix, go for your dreams! it'll be worth the sacrifice to save up for this car because the maintenance costs will likely be MUCH less than on a regular car and you'll save $2K+/yr in gasoline costs. plus you'll be one of the coolest kids on the block. I'm getting one; join me!

  • Btw it would be a good idea for safety to have an external speaker at the front to simulate car sounds (loudness dependent on speed) you can turn on in more dangerous situations.

  • I'm getting it too :D at least that's my plan. Ramen and couchsurfing for the next 3 years lol

  • Hehe. Why not enjoy life for those 3 years and wait a bit longer till these things become more affordable?

  • yea i'm reconsidering :P

its hard to save that much

  • NiMH batteries of Toyota RAV 4 Ev lasted around 150 000 miles and/or 10 years(sold to private owners cars were produced starting around 1999, all production before that were for lease and then destroyed). Li-ion for automotive should last longer. But we will see.

  • I think the battery lasts about 5 years. . The battery should not be expensive to replace. If we can do that, the Tesla should last well over ten years.

  • They should lease the battery.

  • Actually the battery is very expensive. But it shoud last longer than 5 years for sure. I think these things are good for 2000 charges (maybe a bit less). That's enough for 600.000 miles. If you do that in 5 years you're probably better of buying a house in the state you work in!
