i spent the whole day at college singing this today. for absolutely no reason. other than the fact its a fabby song (=

  • That's a good enough reason.

  • yep =P

  • Well, the first time I heard this song an Israeli performed it (Theodore Bikel). Next I heard it in the original "guid tongue".

    Thanks, I enjoyed it!

  • Bikel sang in so many languages. A great performer.

  • Not the best version i have heard,it sounds like a englishmans version, lacks real Doric punch

  • Well, it's the way I do it. Maybe it's the Aussie version!

  • i love the tune its very cheerful

  • Thanks. Nice to get a positive comment after the criticism of the last couple of weeks!

  • Good job. I love this song.

  • what the heck is old specky doing??

and stop swearing and speak in english and get a life and learn how to sing you sad sad man GET A LIFE U OLD GEEZER!!!!!!!

  • So you didn't like it then?

  • this is worst i hiv heard in english you need to listen to song again i think

  • You MUST sing this in some traditional garb with two or three more guitars. This is awesome, thank you for the effort you put into this.

  • Thanks for your comment.

  • Magic! :)

  • Fit like chiel? My faither wis a ferm worker in Aberdeenshire and had monys a fee himsel in his younger days. And my Uncle and Auntie bided at the Barnyards o' Delgaty. I ken it weel.

Bit I wid say that the song is better sung in the Doric and yon mannie that says the song is a bitty on the rude side dissnae ken fit he's spiking aboot. The 'snotter on the wane' jist means that there'll be nae ither licht in the bothy fin his cannle gings deen so he mun finish his sang.

  • This vid sounds just like the Gaelic Storm Version. I really enjoy your vids!!!

    cheers

  • haha i would like to drink with you that would be a blast

  • Cheers what a great video of true scottish spirit mate

  • well done even a bit o "doric"(language of North east Scotland).Actually quite a "rude" song, no luck getting horses to mate but more luck himself with the local lassies ..until his own " candle" burnt out.

not meant as a criticism but chiel is pronounced ch as in church not sh as in shield .If you get chance have a listen to "Old Blind dogs" version , and well done again

  • I have the Clancy Brother's version of this. Very good rendition and more importantly, thanks for the information about this song. Songs are sooo much more meaningful when one knows the history, or rather the reason it was first written. For that I thank you!

  • Thanks for your comment.

  • We're both in a Scottish mood these days it would seem Raymond. I didn't know this song - great job!

  • I'm always in the mood for Scottish songs - not that I sing many of them, but Scotland does have a rich folk tradition.
