  • hes good he just doesn't know how to teach

  • well i am totally new to the snare and ill watch anyone who knows how to play it :) ive got a snare like the one in this vid but i dont have those awsome looking sticks, i have basic ones for starters.....nice vid.....

  • Nice sticks

  • Why do 'know-it-alls' insist on watching BEGINNER and BASIC tutorial videos and then comment that they know better. You just can't help yourselves can you? It's quite pathetic really...

  • these comments on here are funny

  • your rolls were uneven. you're teaching these kids incorrectly.

  • i think im actually doing this right!!!

  • Raise your drum, your left hand should be almost level with the rim of your drum, and your arms shouldn't stretch your arms to reach a too low drum...

  • Start with your beads down.

  • When he says, "they will just be defined by the tempo," he's not really talking about the double stroke roll. He's talking about the different muscles you use. In other words, "[the different muscles you use] will just be defined by the tempo."

The paradoxical concept with double strokes is that you do start using biceps (in conjunction with the rebound and some finger muscles) when you play faster. He proves it when he's playing faster. You see his forearms going up and down.

  • @tjd8705 It's all about conservation of energy! He's distributing the effort throughout different muscles as he speeds up. I will say that he needs improvement. His diddles are a bit crunched when going faster. You can hear the separation between hands. I would attribute that to using his fingers too much.

  • Really really dirty!!! No bueno man

  • how do u get on expertvillage anyway i should submit a video

  • He needs to move his elbow in. How do you even play with it out so far like that?

  • @gcharocks why should he move his elbow in when its obviously working...

  • @antibulletdodger101 It's bad technique and creates tension, maybe not initially, but after a while of playing. His shoulder will start to ache. Drumming is very much about conservation of energy. The more you conserve (relaxing muscles that don't need to be used) the more efficient your drumming will be.

  • @tjd8705 I havent heard Marco Minnemann complaining. Future strain or not, his hand technique is still good

  • oops an expertvillage video

  • Dude... Watch your free hand bro -_-

  • @snxpers lol no but i know what im talking about

  • @snxpers he sucks.fyi im snare at my school first year marching and i made snarline. hmm think about that?

  • ew

  • This. Guy. Sucks.

  • hes in front of his drum....anyone else notice that?

  • @TheZane2109 The head is just on the other way, lol.

  • expert village is an extreme fail and should just stop making videos

  • His doubles are kinda crushed at some times....

  • waaaaaaay too stiff on the rolls. TOO MUCH ARM. use wrist and fingers :D

  • @MrCymbalGuru He's fine.

  • @GuitarGuy22221 you sir, are incorrect sadly.

  • @GuitarGuy22221 You must not drum much, do you? I used to have a bad habit like that, full ar swing rather than wrist and fingers. I learned from that. And I can tell you he has good tone and dynamics, but what he lacks is articulation and technique

  • @YOHANN0001 There is no one set way to drum when it comes to drumcore. Maybe thats his style, he marched cadets if I'm not mistaken. Blue devils have lower tap hights, while some like stryke have higher tap heights and dig into the drum a lot harder. I drum everyday, and I march snare as well..

  • Is it just me or is that drum REALLY flat?

  • a lot of you guys seem very ill-informed. an open roll is a double-stroke roll in which your sticks don't "buzz," they get height with each hit, where as in a buzz roll the second stroke on each hand will be a rebound from the first, therefore the sticks in a buzz roll don't come up as high in the second stroke of each hand and the second note played by each hand is quietter. he is also using large sticks meant for drumline snares, not drumsets, open rolls aren't even used in drum set playing.

  • what sticks is he useing?

  • @Superunknownful the reason they're so large is they're for drumline snares, not for a drumset. i've never bought a pair of these, my drum teacher supplied me with a couple and since they are NOT meant for a drumset, they last much longer and don't get banged up as much by hitting cymbals and whatnot.

  • @canthinkverywell i knew that i ment what types of sticks like brand i guess

  • @Superunknownful oh well i could probly tell if they weren't covered in white tape hahaha.

  • What he said is common sense lol. He is saying to really stroke the roll out but all he is doing is sloppy pressure rolls lmao. He is relying on the bounce and it makes him sloppy

  • @FisherP01 his rolls are a bit sloppy but who's aren't? i'd say this video doesn't deserve the amount of harsh criticism its getting, read my other comment

  • @FisherP01 Actually, his rolls are sloppy because he's trying to stroke them in, squeezing the stick at the fast speed instead of letting it flow making the second note of the diddle really weaker than the initiation attack

  • those rolls werent very clean...

  • the rolls werent very clean....

  • ALL ROLLS EVER ARE CENTER OF DRUM.

  • @CSkank haha this cracked me up. that's exactly what I thought when he said that. I was like wtf? apparently tasty beats don't applu to "open stroke rolls"

  • Can I really get that fast just practicing it slow?

  • Horrible drumming...this guy REALLY sucks!!

  • its hard to learn that shit , i'm practising that waste and i don't get better.

  • @PhCapocci95 i play snare, and its seems hard at 1st but as you get better and yet more experiance in your hands, it wont be as hard.

  • cant stand those rolls.

  • haha this is one of the okay vids on EV, but its still terrible.. like his technique is soooo bad, fast rolls arent open enough, and he slower diddles look like moellar technique then anything

  • haha wow he has terrible fast rolls

  • @masterdrummer19 I know! they seem to kinda buzz

  • @masterdrummer19 stfu he is good better than you probably.....

  • @redvengance1 hahaha wow you really got me.. especially with your amazing grammar... like he is good better then you... im sure that you are passing your 3rd grade english class

  • @masterdrummer19 Oh, well if I was passing my 3rd grade English class, wouldn't i be saying stuff like, "u" for "you" and all that other junk? And i'm in 7th grade for your information... And also, you have no room to talk.. Your grammar is horrible. You don't capitalize any of your words...

  • every rudiment is played in the center of the head ?

  • Your roll is baad when it get faster. -.-

  • @IsoLightRiver Yeah, the Cadets battery is often known for bad fast rolls. Good catch.

    ...

  • @KBoe4 hahaha.

  • What kind of sticks are those

  • no duh its 2 notes after another

  • Would an open roll be marked as a slash in marching music?

  • who gave this guy a license to teach this shit? thanks youtube...not

  • 22 guys accidentally hit the like button ..lol suckers village

  • he needs to work out his arms.. i mean damn the sticks are thicker and have more deffinition and his arms

  • "You're really going to want to not just press it but pull out both beats"

Is that why you do sloppy press rolls?

    Troll channel.

  • @McDevy no he plays sloppy rolls cause he marched cadets ha ha

  • HA to all of you ripping this guy apart.... he has accomplished more than you ever will. jokes on you.

  • "The open stroke roll is going to be achieved when played, when playing really strong double beats. Each hand is going to play 2 beats before the other one."

First of all, what in the hell did you just say?

Second of all, a beat is a beat. Not a note or a stroke. There's a huge difference, idiot. What you call "2 beats" is called a diddle. Before you start being adressed as an "expert", you might want to take some drum lessons.

By the way, your open stroke roll sucks.

  • choppin it up

  • I would make a suggestion for those who wish to keep their open stroke rolls clean. Use a count of three to keep the left and right hands from creating space between each other. Of course this is a skill learned over time. I also suggest using a very soft surface (such as a pillow) as you build up your speed. Play with your wrists and not your arms.

  • why's the snare tilted away from him?

  • so you can see whats going on

  • Nice left hand.

  • my high school drumline never played double strokes they always did buzz rolls even in cadences

  • Kevlar heads...giant sticks....DRUMLINE RULES!!!!

  • Come on guys, did you click on this video to learn something or to brag? You clicked on it, if you don't like it then don't watch it. Nobody cares how fast you can play a double stroke roll.

  • i dont believe u.... i use to march for the cadets and those rolls are fairly fast

  • you must have marched cadets and scouts like this guy did, right? don't kid yourself retard.

  • @BOOMHEADSH0T I was just thinking, "I'm pretty sure I met this guy the other day." He's in Nebraska now, right? From Massachusetts?

  • @BOOMHEADSH0T who are you a stalker

  • @BOOMHEADSH0T Yeah, I'm sure he's great at playing snare when he's got the Cadet's/Scout's tech telling him exactly what to do. That doesn't mean he can teach snare. His videos give absolutely terrible advice, and he doesn't go into enough detail on anything. Example: "And really, the tempo will really dep-- *double stroke roll* So those can all be notated the same way they'll just be defined by the tempo." What the hell does that mean? I don't care who he marched for, he sucks at teaching.

  • @noobicus2 I agree. This guy blows at teaching.

  • @MrBkoolaid sure dude sure

  • man i wish expert village would stop pretending they can drum

  • if you are gonna make a educational video and classify yourself as an expert you need to be able to play an open stroke roll. that roll you played sounded soo bad. you sounded like you were forcing a rebound so it sounded really choppy. (DON'T EVEN BLAME IT ON THE VIDEO QUALITY)

  • what this guy makes a mistake on and actually fails to mention is that at slower tempos you should use mostly wrist to get your doubles out, medium tempos add in a combination of wrist and finger, and at really fast tempos its most arm. buut according to him you just gotta stroke it out. (that's what she said).

  • @iplaydatsnurdrum Not everyone buys into this school of thought.

  • and not everyone is talented and good at playing snare drum.

  • what kind of drum i know a pearl but like what series

  • it is a carbon Poly 14X12

  • hahaha your doubles are slow lol I should make some videos if this guy can anyone can lol

  • wow those rolls sucked fast

  • lol he talks about playing both notes throught the head but every time he speeds up they close up and sound like shit

  • where is the video on technique and control??

  • shit sandwich

  • he has a great set position...

wtf is wrong with expert village

  • Comment removed

  • ya some expert expertvillage is.... NOT

  • pearl drum?

  • his right hand is at an awkward angle

  • great rolls....lol not

  • It was good, you are an idiot "dtgodportnoy"

  • lol

  • lol no. Some of them were not good at all, lol.
