Wilfredo Gomez and Salvador Sanchez are two sensational champions and people should admire how many champions come from these two countries Viva Puerto Rico y Viva Mexico
Gomez no debe sentir ninguna verguenza... Perdio contra el mejor peleador mejicano y uno de los mas grandes de latinoamerica, Salvador Sanchez. Me siento orgulloso de nuestro Wilfredo que gano grandes peleas contra leyendas como Pintor y Zarate
I remember this @ the time in 1982 I think but anyway the intensity , punch variety and fortune changes make this a fight to rival hagler v hearns - fantastic
I am mexican but im not the type thats going to talk shit about puerto rican fighters. Both countries have produced great champions the likes of zarate, gomez, sanchez, benitez, pintor and the list goes on and on. I admire how many great fighters come out of the puerto rican island. Hope one day I can go visit n absorb the wonderfull culture.
Gomez Never demanded a quick rematch, after losing he went back to the bantams and he had 3 year opportunity before Sals death for a rematch against Sanchez but he was never that motivated,I wonder why?
@4272mana VE A MI PAGINA YO SUBO PELEAS FULL DE PACQUIAO, COTTO, TYSON, CORRALES, DE LA HOYA, ALI, FOREMAN, FRAZIER Y MUCHOS MAS Y TAMBIEN TENGO TRIBUTOS..........
Gomez moved up in weight, didn't train wel, and tookl the fight with Sanchez lightly. He did get his ass beat and the fight was stopped by ref. He desperately wanted a rematch but the rematch never took place because Sanchez died in a motorcycle accident. Gomez left flowers for him at his grave. So even though he didn't get that rematch, there's no doubt that Gomez is one hell of a fighter and to say a rematch would've been the same is as ignorant a comment as ever.
@GdelTres I echo the sentiments of most here who say there were no excusues for Gomez losing to Sanchez.Do you know what excuses are for? For losers. The only excuse a fighter can legitamately have for losing is that he is simply old and a shell of his former self. This was not the case with Gomez vs Sanchez. Both fighters were young and in their prime.Do you really accept the excuse that Gomez took Sanchez lightly? Would you take Salvador Sanchez lightly, who also happens to be bigger? Me neither.
Sanchez was bigger than gomez. remember back in the day, you had only ttwo champions and only 12 divisions,. so it was alot harder to move up in weight and win gomez was a great fighter top ten all time but sanchez was a great featherwieght and just to big for gomez.
Orgullo boricua!
@AntonioSantiago I see that you're a gentleman by this and your other comments. But I respectfully disagree with you regarding the difference in talent between Sanchez and Gomez. An eighth-round knockout is a fairly emphatic point. It's not like Gomez lost on points. But yeah, Gomez owns an historic win over Zarate. That was his greatest victory, no question about it.
@Kedbuka Thanks :). I just dont get people who start arguing like they were the ones in the ring. I mean, you don't see people arguing whether Ozzy or Gene Simmons was a better rocker!! (well, maybe they do..)
I just respect fighters of that level and God knows I'd loved to meet and hang out with Sal Sanchez and get his autograph!!!
@AntonioSantiago Ozzy's a way more accomplished rocker than Gene Simmons could ever hope to be. Sabbath vs. KISS? C'mon, Sabbath by a mile with either Ozzy or Ronnie James Dio leading the way. And you know it!
I don't think that there has ever been a champion that was more dominant than Gomez was at Super Bantamweight (122). No one just knocks out every one, except Gomez at 122...
In my opinion Mexicans and Puertoricans are the best Latin boxers. That's why they have such of great rivalry ...but ask yourself this question... if Mexico(pop.108,396,211) vs Puerto Rico(pop.3,998,000.. that's only 3.6% of the Mexican population) were in the same population level?how many more championship wins will Puerto Rico have vs Mexico?

im from the tito trinida era luv tito hes a beast but bazooka is no joke hes number one in my book tied with carlos ortiz he also was an animal check out his fights
I think Wilfredo's skills were superior to Felix Trinidad's. Wilfredo didnt like to train, was with women during training. Trinidad was very disciplined, more charismatic. But I think Wilfredo was a better boxer.
I agree, in his early career he had amazing footwork and his punch placement was great as well, watching him dominate a well schooled techinician like Davila really showcased how good he really was, by the time he got to Sanchez he wasn't the same fighter, Trinidad was much more one-dimensional than Gomez. I rate Trinidad 3rd in Puerto Rico's greatest behind Carlos Ortiz and Gomez.
Gomez was two months shy of his 25th birthday when he fought Sanchez. Are you saying he was washed up by then? Spare me the excuses. Wilfredo was in the prime of his career when the two met and he was beaten, dominated, and thoroughly outclassed. And that result would've repeated itself over and over again no matter how many times they rematched.
His fight w/Davila was a good one but Albert was a natural batamweight and the difference in size showed.
When I said he wasn't the same fighter I meant he ahd changed his style and was more reliant on his power, he boxed much better in his early days but his hubris was his downfall and as time went on he relied more and more on his power rather than skill, I am not saying he would of beaten Sanchez but I think the fight would of been somewhat different had he not altered his style.
@Kedbuka I have to say that a boxers days are not meassured by his years but by his battles in the ring. I also would like to point out that fait never allowed him to try and avenge his loss to sanches.
@melbuilt Gomez didn't go through many, if any, wars before he fought Sanchez. The super-bantam class was devoid of any great fighters besides Gomez when he reigned. His toughest opponents at 122lbs were all bantamweights who stepped up to fight him--Zarate, Davila and Pintor. As I mentioned before, it's my opinion Sanchez would have taken him apart in a rematch, just like the first time they met. Too quick, strong, tough, and smart. In short, Sanchez was better than Gomez...much better.
@Kedbuka Not much better, they where even, only thing Sanchez had that was greater than Gomez was his stamina, a thing that much mexicans have for living in a country a lot of feet above sea level. Their fight was an even fight till late, and Gomez didnt have the stamina to keep up with Sanchez.
@ELHURACAN58 Sanchez vs. Gomez was a one-sided affair. Gomez was knocked down and nearly out in the first round. Sanchez then proceeded to torture Gomez over the next six rounds, hurting him several times until he decided to end it in the 8th. And Gomez never even came close to hurting Sanchez. He got in some good shots but Salvador was never in any trouble and in total control all the way. You think it was an even fight? I obviously don't agree but that's your opinion and that's fine.
@Kedbuka Gomez didn't train for the fight, EVERYBODY knows that. In what planet are you living? To be fair Zarate was sick when he fought Gomez, everybody KNOWS THAT. We will never know what would had happened if Zarate was not sick and Gomez had trained for Sanchez. The beauty of boxing.
@Kedbuka Sanchez was better, but not by much. As far as Gomez's training, the same could be said about Zarate's illness, but no one seems to think Zarate may have used that as an excuse-and I am not saying he did, for I think he probably was sick. Simple, all we got here is "maybe, if," and "you said, (s)he said". But in reality, the score is still 1-1.
This is a Rican saying it, so people, stop arguing these silly things we do not know exactly how they happened.
@AntonioSantiago I am not taking anything away from Sanchez..But It was evident in Gomez physic that he wasn't 100% for that fight. Everyone at that time knows what happened in the hotel with that actress the night before the fight . And how he also needed it to lose weight before the weigh in. I belive a 100% Gomez would had still lost the fight but not as disasterous or maybe not. The stemina determine the whole fight. He actually started boxing pretty good after the Ko'd but ran out of gas

@sonadora12 Your point isn't clear to me...is it that I think Sanchez would've beaten Gomez again had they rematched? No one knows anything, you're right. But we can draw some conclusions from their first fight. And silly excuses about lack of training on Gomez's part don't mean jack-shit. Only PUERTO RICANS say that bullshit. He got his ass whipped fair and square. And had they fought again, he would have gotten his ass re-whipped fair and square. The beauty of opinion.
@Kedbuka I agree with you there are no excuses Sanchez beat Gomez an outclassed him, but what you fail to take into account is that Gómez, was a pure puncher and could knock anybody out in any round, going so far as to say that the outcome would always be the same would be far fetch, the same is true, if Carlos Zarate would have fought Gomez again, would not have been surprised if Zarate knock Gomez out in one round. Their records speak for themselves.
