after seeing in person and the 'heaviness' of it all. Jim is the man. sorry Eric. you are definitely cool too, but jimi could get sounds that haven't even existed since. Hendrix was also one hell of a showman.
Honestly, Jimi is my favorite. Only because the meaning in his playing and sounds are very colorful to me and give me great emotion. I think Clapton is a fantastic guitarist, too. Just, not my sound really. Do this though, look up Jason Becker's Clean Solo from his vinyl The Raspberry Jams. Frickin B. E. A.....utiful
Who´s the Best is a question of preference. Only a stupid would dare to pull its vision above others, at these matters. Well, if somebody (You) ´s the owner of the Truth, I say "excuse me"...
@byrd5d eric was a much more lyrical player thats...eric was about melody...jimi was more about technique...a lot more notes, great they were...but they were completely different players..
.....and what is the objective of every great guitarist? First, to make beautiful music. Second, to inspire others to pick up a guitar and make beautiful music too. If any guitarist achieves these two aims, then they have succeeded, and whether they are better than or less than anyone else is totally immaterial.
This is a question of styles and taste. What one likes, another might hate. Eric was a more regimented performer in the classical sense, while Jimi was truly free form inventive, original, and a force of nature. Although I love Erics playing, Jimi for me was the one. If you look into Jimi's life too, you will see that he was as much in awe of Clapton and Beck as they were of him. This is not a competition! These people are artists......what they produce is musical genius....enjoy and appreciate.
Jimi was not the best. There have been too many guitarist to even contemplate who was the best. Too many styles so if jimi is your favourite guitarist that's good but these labels of who is the best it doesn't do it for me. I personally get more enjoyment from listening to Clapton. So there you go.
To Jessthehorse: Are we talking about guitar playing or show business? Not really the same deal. Was Liberace the world's greatest piano player? It appears that nuance eludes you.
If you want to compare them, you have to do it on the same age. If Jimi was still alive, he would blow Claptons head of. Compare this 2 when they were 27 or something like that. Right now, Clapton has a lot more years of playing. That is not fair.
The best example for this, is Killing Floor. Jimi killed Clapton there. And I think that that is the best example to compare them.
I do apologize for this...but what has Jimi done lately? He was a tallented musician who fucked all of his fans out of years of greatness all for the sake of his selfish bullshit. Eric wins....Page and Gilmore are also better.
@sobernow11 You're a fucking moron. What has eric done for me ever? Nothing compared to Hendrix and he never will. You are asking Hendrix to be a different person and for that you are a selfish piece of shit. You are not entitled to his music it was a gift. I understand this is a matter of opinion, but you are out of your fucking mind to say something like that.
@I3LUD Like I said "I do apologize for this" Am I a moron? Evidently, yours' is ithe only opinion that matters. Am I a fan of Hendrix...NO. Does that make me less intellegent than you...NO...All I did was state facts
@sobernow11 You don't seem to understand the world just doesn't work like it does in your head. You don't just tell Jimi to not do drugs have everything happen the way it does and prevent his death. Would I have loved to see him with Miles Davis in what I believe would be earth shatteringly amazing?Yes.But I don't live in the past. There's a bit of a butterfly effect here. What ever happened happened and because of it Jimi's music exists as it does. I wouldn't take that back it's perfect.
@sobernow11 See I get that clapton is an AMAZING guitar player even though I don't like most of his stuff. But it's a fact he is a great blues guitar player. He pays tributes to the greats before him, mixes old with new and was innovative in a lot major scale blues stuff. If you don't get that Hendrix's chord progressions are amazing, why a 7#9 chord is nicknamed theHendrix chord, and that his use of the Dorian mode in a blues context is genius.Than yes sir,you are less intelligent than people who do.
@I3LUD Its not really fair to compare anyone to Hendrix, even Clapton. Nor any musician for that matter; Hendrix was in many ways a freak of nature - thrilling, visceral, un-worldly. I still say though that Clapton came up with the concept: 3 piece, extended soloing overdriven psychedelic rock. His playing on the Wheels of Fire live album is equal to anything Hendrix did. Almost.
@sobernow11 If you like Page orwhoever better that's legit. But your comments are meant to insult a deadman that most people understand is the greatest guitar player of all time.I say that not because he's one of my favorites but because his music changed so many peoples livesand his playing wasboth compositionallyandtechnically groundbreaking. You asking Hendrix to be a different person is like me asking you to stop being a close minded asshole and enjoy Hendrix's music.Clearly it's not happening
This question was answered the night Chas Chandler introduced Jimi to Eric Clapton. Jimi asked if he could sit in, something no one ever had the balls to do. They let him plug in and Jimi starts playing Killing Floor by Howlin Wolf. Eric already thought it was a difficult song to play and here's Jimi blazing through it like lightening. Eric Clapton walked off the stage. True Story. Look it up.
Clapton then became friends with Pete Townsend because they both felt threatened and amazed by him du
Apples and Oranges. Comparison is useless. Eric in the early Creme days before the drugs took their toll was by far the most lyrical soloist I had ever heard. Jimi was a more conventional blues player and then got into all the showmanship and glitz and both ended up being icons and both deserve to be. Simple as that. Jimi was like no other but he could not do what Eric did and vice versa!
@lauriersroses333 - yea right. You must be a young kid because when Fresh Creme came out, NOBODY had ever played like that. The reason you youngsters have the impression his playing is common place is because every kid on the planet emulates his style. I will say that Eric fried like a fish on drugs and now he plays pretty good blues but not really on a par with lots of younger players. It's like the Olympics, they keep getting younger and better but Eric innovated a style from nothing!
@lauriersroses333 - a youthful "47". That is young compared to those of us who were around in the 60s for the first go round. *S* When Eric was playing with The Blues Breakers and later when Fresh Creme came out, it was VERY "special"!
Solos Clapton, but people forget that jimi was possibly the most influential rhythm player of all time and that tends to occupy the majority of the song.
I have noticed over the years that the primary reason many hard core guitar fans dislike Clapton is due to the less than inspired music he created thru the 70s and into some of the 80s .. Many feel betrayed, let down and some just pissed off . Hendrix and Clapton had totally different approaches to playing totally different music.. If you like the music of one,you probably prefer his guitar playing as well..Shouldn't be a goal to convince anyone who is the more accomplished player.
@roselandalvin - an astute observation. The solo on Lay Down Sally could have been performed better by any guitar student with 3 months of lessons under his belt. He was fried from drugs during those years
Hendrix is messy, but he's great for what he contributed rock music and electric guitar play in general. With Eric Clapton, I'm unimpressed. He isn't noteworthy at all.
Perhaps you haven't heard enough of his material to judge. Listen to "Presence of the Lord," or his "Stepping Out" and see if you still feel that way.
@RaggaeOfFunk - LMAO "Not noteworthy"? That is just plain dumb. Clapton's playing with the Blues Breakers and later with Creme innovated a style without which there would be no Van Halen, no Steve Vai or Steve Morse or any of the modern cats. Dumb dude
wow k locura los dioses de la guitarra kien mas grande k ellos???aunk sigue ganando jimi hendrix arrebatando su lugar a eric clapton los dos muy buenos demasido pero yo creo k hendrix
Both were great. You can make the case that Hendrix was sloppy and a showboat. Clapton was more precise and controlled. Clapton had much better tone (and he usually played in tune!). It seems that there's some sort of unwritten law that everyone must agree that Hendrix was the greatest of all time. He was great, but there are too many other great players in the annals of rock and blues to label one man "the greatest". It's not a contest.
@tanger335 It's kind of a universal thing that everyone says but never thinks about. I've heard guys that play death metal and shit like that say that Hendrix is their favorite guitarist, and I'm always thinking, "Bullshit, how many of his songs do you know?!" It's like when people praise The Beatles, it's something that not a lot of people dispute. I can think of many of guitarists that are better than Eric and Jimi, if you ask me David Gilmour is the best, but that's my opinion.
I must say Clapton is my favourite guitarist but this is a shit video of Jim... So not really fair plus to. All below this is Clapton's Lead break in his 1999 Clapton and Friends Concert rendition of Layla.
I know Jimi Hendrix is one of the forefathers of rock music, etc... But REALLY the only thing I've ever heard him do is beat on an out of tune guitar in a way that makes me physically uncomfortable. He plays well. He plays fast. Apparently he's "technically magnificent." He does not sound good to me. Its not acoustically pleasing. I've never heard a Jimi Hendrix song that Stevie Ray Vaughn didn't play 1000x better, since we're looking for "all of the above..."
Eric is more one dimensional, concentrates in certain areas more, where Jimi was all over the place all the time. Eric left the building when he heard this Jimi performance below, bc there is no way he'd even come close to playing it on a good day
.
yt vid
Jimi Hendrix BoG Earth Blues Fillmore New Years Day 1970 B&W Floor Footage
Clapton's solo was far more musical and audibly pleasing. Hendrix's solo just sounded like a muddled mess, sure it might appear technically challenging, but it does nothing for me musically.
@bigdjindustriez How can u describe jimi`s playing as being technical if he never had a single guitar lesson. He plays with incredible intention, power, soul ..ETC how can you not cum with jimmi`s solo!!!?? xDD
the crumbs from jimi's table are are more awesome than anything that eric could ever attempt to produce...jimi by-"light years", is the GOD of ROCK GUITAR. Peace. tim kimbrough( a gatekeeper of the blues).
Both guys advanced the image, technique, and playing style of the electric guitar in their own, unique ways. Is Eddie Van Halen or Ingwie Malmsteen better? Without guitarists of the past, the "new" guys would have that much less to build upon. We're born when we're born and use the resources of our time to advance our careers. The result is some great music we all can listen to for posterity If you like one style over another, then you have an opinion, and that's what really matters....
Best Hendrix better than Best Clapton? I don't think so. The fact with Jimmi is the "Legend" he left us cause of his premature death. Of course, the question is also how many better he could have reached in all these years... But the Jimmi we saw was not better in thecnique, style or feeling than the Eric we have seen meanwhile. Just my opinion.
That is not to say however, that Clapton is a slouch. In his own right Eric is a master guitarist. The common affinity Eric and Jimi had was that they were both self taught. When Chaz Chandler offered to first bring Jimi to the UK, Jimi had two questions: do they have Fender amps, and will I meet Eric Clapton? It was never a buddy buddy thing between Jimi and Eric, but Jimi had great respect for Clapton as an artist. When Jimi died so suddenly, Eric was gutted. He felt Jimi had let him down.
@jillbain Clapton never had to learn from a book. He was playing in pubs at 15 he's as much a natural as Hendrix. Both were born to play the guitar. People go on about Hendrix being a force of nature the best of all time. That's theirs and your opinion. A lot of people don't like Hendrix and prefer Clapton as I do.
First of all you can't compare the layla solo with what Hendrix is doing here. Clapton is improvising with the layla solo while Hendrix is just going wild over the fretboard. Sounds great but I think it's style over substance. I think Hendrix is similar to page where they are both great guitarist but not good live players. For me eric is the most accomplished guitrist I've ever heard. But everyones got their own opinions. Peace...
@nantyboy Hendrix not a good live player? Wrong. Hes the best live guitarist. Hes free. And improvising? wtf thats all jimi is doing too. Eric had to learn his shit. When jimi was just a call of nature. Which to me is the art of music, being free, not reading out of a book. thanku
@nantyboy No, you are completely wrong. I saw Jimi and The Experience at many gigs. I was even at the Cream gig where Jimi made his first appearance. You can take it from me, Jimi was the real deal. I was so smitten by him I followed him all over the place in the UK, and his performance on stage was incredible. To judge here simply play Jimi doing Howlin Wolfs Killing Floor. Hands down, Jimi is tops.
Hendrix, hands down, no question. Jack Bruce said it.....Clapton is a master guitarist, but Hendrix is like a force of nature! The Hendrix part was from Woodstock, and not so good. Try a clip of Jimi playing Howlin Wolfs Killing Floor. Clapton could not play it! Too difficult. Even Johnny B Goode at Berkley would top Claptons performance of Leyla, as would Lulu Show Full Version playing Voodoo Child and tribute to Cream. Jimi was, and still is, in a league of his own.
If you're a serious musician, you'd know better than to ever ask this question. They are both awesome cats who only tried to do their thing the best that they could do it. Peace Bernie K. Sound Barrier!!
Check out this video ---> /watch?v=6t4qXH_YaBs&feature=related it shows it all. I mean all respect to Clapton but Jimi just destroys him, Hendrix is THE BEST of all time.
@mungobestmage technical wankery? No what he did was natural playing. The guy came from being homeless to a rich man from his amazing playing from a guitar.Nobody taught him how to play guitar but himself.
jimmy hendrix killed eric clapton in a jam ....eric clapton left the stage. at the time clapton was considerd a god on the guitar. watch BBC's 7 ages of rock. it even has clapton comenting on that day.
Yep...Jimi played faster.....had feeling etc...don't knock Clapton though. I mean, you choose a clip of Clapton in his 50's and one of Jimi in his 20's of course it's going to be different! Like SambarVadaBlues says; Right eye vs. Left eye ! They're both necessary!
lol comparing the best song of eric clapton with an improvisation of jimi hendrix and jimi still won by far, and the eric clapton song is layla which was made by the allman brothers.
Will all you idiots who keep asking who is better clapton or hendrix please shut the hell up. They are both amazing musicians and completely different in style and breadth of material
Clapton is musicality and Hendrix is uncontrolled fury. It's a matter of taste. I'll take Clapton any day. I always thought Hendrix was garbage showmanship.
This is a totally unfair video . Mostly because of the different era's in recording and because your showing two different styles and tempos . I love both Clapton and Hendrix . See : youtube.com/watch?v=KPJgtQwtVVA&feature=g-vrec&context=G23e1705RVAAAAAAAAAQ
Claptons video was done within the last ten years and Jimis was done in 1969. Clapton is still playing 40 odd years after Jimi died and still not even close to Jimi. Just listen to what Satriani has to say about the lord and master of the electric guitar.
after seeing in person and the 'heaviness' of it all. Jim is the man. sorry Eric. you are definitely cool too, but jimi could get sounds that haven't even existed since. Hendrix was also one hell of a showman.

Eric plays nice pentatonic licks. Jimi plays notes he discovered on a transcendental psychodelic odyssey to the 12th dimension. Jimi wins.

UM jimmy hands down. this dude is playing like his hands are two separate beings
ramaunsmith 1 month ago
Eric is more one dimensional, concentrates in certain areas more, where Jimi was all over the place all the time. Eric left the building when he heard this Jimi performance below, bc there is no way he'd even come close to playing it on a good day

Clapton's solo was far more musical and audibly pleasing. Hendrix's solo just sounded like a muddled mess, sure it might appear technically challenging, but it does nothing for me musically.
bigdjindustriez 1 month ago
@bigdjindustriez How can u describe jimi`s playing as being technical if he never had a single guitar lesson. He plays with incredible intention, power, soul ..ETC how can you not cum with jimmi`s solo!!!?? xDD

@bigdjindustriez iam not saying clapton is better ,by the way.

ITS A QUESTION OF FEELING !
lungbernd 1 month ago
Both guys advanced the image, technique, and playing style of the electric guitar in their own, unique ways. Is Eddie Van Halen or Ingwie Malmsteen better? Without guitarists of the past, the "new" guys would have that much less to build upon. We're born when we're born and use the resources of our time to advance our careers. The result is some great music we all can listen to for posterity If you like one style over another, then you have an opinion, and that's what really matters....

johnnypapayone 1 month ago
Best Hendrix better than Best Clapton? I don't think so. The fact with Jimmi is the "Legend" he left us cause of his premature death. Of course, the question is also how many better he could have reached in all these years... But the Jimmi we saw was not better in thecnique, style or feeling than the Eric we have seen meanwhile. Just my opinion.
Sorry for the language..

MrMoggyman 1 month ago
@jillbain Clapton never had to learn from a book. He was playing in pubs at 15 he's as much a natural as Hendrix. Both were born to play the guitar. People go on about Hendrix being a force of nature the best of all time. That's theirs and your opinion. A lot of people don't like Hendrix and prefer Clapton as I do.
nantyboy 1 month ago
First of all you can't compare the layla solo with what Hendrix is doing here. Clapton is improvising with the layla solo while Hendrix is just going wild over the fretboard. Sounds great but I think it's style over substance. I think Hendrix is similar to page where they are both great guitarist but not good live players. For me eric is the most accomplished guitrist I've ever heard. But everyones got their own opinions. Peace...
nantyboy 1 month ago
@nantyboy Hendrix not a good live player? Wrong. Hes the best live guitarist. Hes free. And improvising? wtf thats all jimi is doing too. Eric had to learn his shit. When jimi was just a call of nature. Which to me is the art of music, being free, not reading out of a book. thanku
jillbain 1 month ago
@nantyboy No, you are completely wrong. I saw Jimi and The Experience at many gigs. I was even at the Cream gig where Jimi made his first appearance. You can take it from me, Jimi was the real deal. I was so smitten by him I followed him all over the place in the UK, and his performance on stage was incredible. To judge here simply play Jimi doing Howlin Wolfs Killing Floor. Hands down, Jimi is tops.
MrMoggyman 1 month ago
Hendrix, hands down, no question. Jack Bruce said it.....Clapton is a master guitarist, but Hendrix is like a force of nature! The Hendrix part was from Woodstock, and not so good. Try a clip of Jimi playing Howlin Wolfs Killing Floor. Clapton could not play it! Too difficult. Even Johnny B Goode at Berkley would top Claptons performance of Leyla, as would Lulu Show Full Version playing Voodoo Child and tribute to Cream. Jimi was, and still is, in a league of his own.

Two self-evident truths guitar players should know about guitar playing:
1. When it comes to JIMI HENDRIX no one even comes close.
2. The closest anyone has yet come to Hendrix' brilliance and boundless originality on guitar was the late great MICHAEL HEDGES.

Claptons video was done within the last ten years and Jimis was done in 1969. Clapton is still playing 40 odd years after Jimi died and still not even close to Jimi. Just listen to what Satriani has to say about the lord and master of the electric guitar.
