Even those who didn't really know him felt like they knew him. Very few people if any know the whole story behind the scenes. I've always been a big fan, great voice, great performer, amazing songwriter. Somehow Mackey was always the guy everyone smiled and said oh man Mackey you kolohe, I don't want to judge, he was a great performer/songwriter.
Dude, not the '90s, I directed this in '85! My boss, the great Phil Arnone, and I split directing duties in season 1 of Island Music, Island Hearts. What a trip it was: rehearsals in the afternoon, then I would go off and mark my scripts, which were lyric sheets, as I watched VHS tapes of rehearsal. The newscast ended at 6:30, and the terrific KGMB night shift would then have thirty minutes to move into concert mode. The audience filed in, and at 7PM, we were live. Total fun!
That vocal "thing" he does from 1:30 to 1:32 is so distinctly his - he does that "run" with his voice in many of his songs - one of the hallmarks of his delivery of certain lyrics. You know that audience must be enjoying an eternally entertaining evening - one that would never be forgotten.
Mackey was a gifted singer,i wished that judge gave him rehab instead of jail time...i also know another person who took his life in there...is it where u send drug users when they r detoxing...maybe detox them in rehab then give jail time when they're mentally stable...just a thought...miss u braddah mackry
@8ricky0t8 I agree with you totally, he should have been sent in for rehab like he requested. It's a damn shame that he hung himself. I never got to see Kalapana live until after his death. The fact that I never got the chance to see him play/sing live eats at me each and every time I listen to their music. RIP Mackey
@rogerdodgerfan Sad but true, Mackey was given several chances and sent to rehab in the past, dropping out each time before completion..The judge had no option but to send him to prison...The mistake came with the prison system not monitoring him knowing that he was in a depressed state..Mackey previously tried taking his own life just prior to this unfortunate incident.. Having said that, prison officials should've had him under close watch...Mackey will be greatly missed, always..!!!
As much as I love C&K there is no way any incarnation of Kalapana should be an opening act for them. Two equals that if either of them came out of a California or New York scene they would be on the R&R Hall of Fame.
I will never get tired of watching & listening to this! Hearing Mackey's introduction of the song is so sweet. I can tell he had fun singing some of the lyrics too!
This song could've easily been in the top ten that year (70's) but this unusually good band didn't gain exposure to the mainland. Kalapana would've been a nationally famous group. At least the first three of their albums would've went gold. This tune has an 80's quality to it. Mackey Feary is in the same class as Darryl Hall (Hall & Oates), Kenny Loggins (Loggins & Messina), to name a few. The band was that good, too - on par with bands like "America".
Duran-Duran-ish? This song was written by Maurice Bega a long time friend of Kalapana and the one who stepped into the big shoes of filling in for Mackey after he passed away. Maurice is a great song writer and a good player. This was recorded at KGMB Studios in the early 90's.
yeah i don't know this song either but they sound great! when was this done? seems 80's-ish judging by the shirt designs and i bet that keyboardist is playing like, a Yamaha DX-7, remember those?
Kalapana is a band from Hawaii that existed in their original group (everyone seen here is the original group)during the entire latter half of the 70's & very briefly early in the 80's. The 1st 3 albums were dynamite. The band finally broke up, but they left behind a treasure trove of great recordings.
Miss u Mackey.....I had the great fortune of seeing Mackey singing karaoke at the old club Oasis...because he knew me from when I had him as a guest judge at my high school's talent show in the late 70's, he would always sing "Catherine" and "I Will Remember You" for me....he is truly missed!
ahhh thats is so sweet , you should treasure that memory he was a great singer i grew up listen to him during the 90's thanks to my mother she use to force me listening to oldies hehehe and i love it now .
tehehehe who else couldn't help but smile when our dear Mackey Feary laughed singing "I can't stand the heat" [1:52]?
