  • i love them both but id say i like vinnie a little bit more because of his superior use of dynamics

  • Buddy was the Mother F're. Can't be touched

  • vinnie's drums sound like a giant fart, but the ass cheeks are changing their tension to make the flapping go faster and slower. Damn modern drums sound bad.

  • THEY ARE TWO DIFFERENT DRUMMERS WITH TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT STYLES! EACH COULD BE ARGUED AS THE BEST DRUMMER IN THE WORLD

  • Not even close, Buddy by a landslide!

  • This is why no drummer alive has the right to be cocky. None of us are good as this man.

  • Buddy wins but he is older than Vinnie in this clip, so Buddy had more experience at the moment that this video was recorded . Vinnie its look younger than Buddy so I would like to compare both with the same age and years experience. I want to be fear with Vinnie.

  • Buddy! Wins! Buddy is the reason that Vinny plays the way he does. 2 different times 2 great drummers. But Buddy for his time was the greatest! and even now is still competition for the greats of today. That says volumes! Buddy was way ahead of the curve. That takes nothing away from Vinny. He is a force in the drummers of today.

  • If you don't like it -- Don't comment <- WTF ?

  • Buddy wins

  • Buddy's Drums SOUND like drums. Vinnie sounds like he's beating on bags filled with pudding...

  • Buddy's Drums SOUND like drums. Vinnie sounds like he's beating on bags filled with pudding...

  • There will never be a drummer to compare to buddy rich

  • @jonnyfender7

    umm...yes...he's called Steve Gadd

  • rich is a fucking master , but vinnie is better in my oppinion

  • @gian111000 fucking a teacher who had a jazz band!

  • dont put much attention on better sound quality

    pay attention on skill

  • gana vinnie colaiuta! por mucho xD

  • I love both of these great drummers for their uniqueness and style. Vinnie obviously dabbs into different styles of music and may be more cerebral than Buddy ever was--but personally, I still favor the king solowise. Buddy is just an animal with his blazing technique, speed, dexterity, and flare. Vinnie's double strokes, poly-rythms, and versatility, are a sight to behold. Both of these guys are monsters in their own right.

  • buddy rich sounded insane WITHOUT hi-tech mics on each tom...imagine what he would have sounded like if he was recorded the way vinnie was in these videos...it would BLOW YOUR MIND!

  • wow, I forgot how greast buddy rich was.

  • montage mal fait....

  • Buddy Rich will always be the greatest.

  • Rich (1917) is the master... Colaiuta (1955) is the best student. Gene Krupa is another master.

  • Buddy is God on earth!!

  • VINNIE!

  • buddy hands down

  • Buddy Rich

  • Wwwwow!!! To both!!

  • It wouldn't have a point, to compare those masters at all

  • i think that louis bellson is king

  • None better than Buddy, not then not now not ever.

  • just the sound make the difference

  • i just had an orgasm

  • Everybody who gave a thumbs down to this video should be forced to battle Buddy Rich.

  • the hell you talkin about cadaverr , buddy had control and speed in his favor and buddy could groove but big bad swing aint the same as the jazz in odd time morello was doing, and I never said he couldnt do it re read it again where did I say he cant , Ive never heard him do it foo.

  • buddy all the way

  • Buddy......all Buddy

  • Buddy

  • that was your inspiration u lost your credabilty by even challegenge the master

  • I can't imagine what Buddy would be able to do if he had the technology available to drummers today. Imagine his blast beats O.O

  • The King is Buddy!!!

  • CHINESE CHOPSTICK TRICK

  • buddy is a monster!

  • Buddy Rich hands down is my dude..& Vinnie is a tough cat..man 2 of my all time favs!!!!

  • each one is the best in his time

  • Indeed it's hard to tell, they're both too good, damn!

  • I like how at the start of Vinnie's solo, he unleashed the wires from his snare.

Also....Vinnie's foot work was incredible....personally I think it is a tie...both are gods.

And there is just something about a drummer that holds traditional grip... it just looks so elegant.

P.S. Not that my opinion matters....but my favorite drummer of all time is Mike Clark.

  • Vinny but Buddy is super!

  • Buddy Rich was doing things on the drums 60 years ago that people still can't fathom today. It's no contest.

  • Simply put, i don't think anybody has the shear reflexes and caliber of a Buddy Rich. Super human. Even Vinnie, who's is my all time favorite drummer since 1989.

  • Vinnie is an excellent drummer, but Buddy wins hands down. Technique and musicality were Buddy's strong points. It might be a more interesting idea to have Buddy and Joe Morello or Buddy and Dave Black comparisons. Along with Louie Bellson, and Ed Shaughnessy, probably some of the best of the best.

  • look up aaron spears, chris dave, jojo mayer, chris coleman....

  • alot of ppl comment on buddy vs vinnie ..most of you never ever played drums a day in your life, the rumor that buddy rich never practice is bullshit, buddy was obsessed with practicing after a while he stop practicing as he got better like most musicians do...now buddy rich was a snare and cymbals drummer, i agree that his snare drumming is probably the best ever but as an all around drummer i dont think he was the best..i think we need to such different drummers from different genres and see

  • I just think its unfair to have anyone put next to Buddy, its been soked into our minds already that is the best their is as what he does, and for good reason.

  • This is fantastic....todays gear bbenefits modern drummer. so ?

  • i love how buddy rich cant read music and he can make the most intricate beats and styles ever he desserves the best drummer award for ever.

  • Buddy Rich is the beloved Godfather of Drum Shred. Flawless technique - for what he was playing, that is. But guys like Vinnie are on a totally different planet. Buddy never demonstrated the musical versatility we've seen from Vinnie over the years. And I NEVER heard Buddy play anything of any polyrhythmic significance. Check out Vinnie's polyrhythm over polyrhythm mayhem demonstrated on Frank Zappa's "Shut Up And Play Your Guitar" series. Stuff Buddy could never hope to play.

  • Note that Vinnie's performance here is from the 1st Buddy Rich Memorial concert in 1989!

  • both are awsome but buddy still wins. still vinnie is very good

  • buddy wins

  • Buddy Rich don't have any competition Vinnie don't stand a chance at all..As for this guy Samtotheg Yea Joe Morello was good but he is no Buddy Rich he is not even half as fast as Buddy Rich was. So Buddy Rich hands down best Drummer of all times unless you put him against my dad lol but I met Buddy Rich my dad new him

  • @TheOSO209

buddy rich wasnt twice as fast moron, morello one hand rolls with best of them considering , morello soloed alot in odd times and had a faster foot and sounds alot more pleasing than buddy I would say morello wins WITH EASE against buddy rich.

  • @samtotheg Joe Morello disagrees with you.

  • @cadaverr

you couldnt take things like that from joe morello seriously twice after playing with gene krupa and carl palmer , he said he needed practice, consider the speed and control of buddy richs hands werent that far from Morellos, considering morello played and solo in odd time, considering morellos foot was better than richs, considering morello had musicality to his solo I would say he wins, he beats rich in alot of categories.

  • Comment removed

  • @samtotheg According to Neil Peart, Morello considered Buddy the very best of all time. Do you want me to direct you to the link? Buddy Rich was the most incredible raw talent to ever grace a drumset (and Morello himself agrees with me). Enough said. Morello was amazing, but Buddy was even better.

  • @cadaverr

being a drummer and evaluator of talent are 2 different things, micheal jordan (great player) thought kwame brown was good enuff to be a first pick, anyhow raw talent so what, what does that have to do with any thing, buddy is a little faster wit his hands than morello and loud ,thats it, he lacks the musicality morello has, he doesnt groove in odd time signatures like morello does, etc do a list on criteria and morello wins , morello is the greatest ever in my opinion.

  • @samtotheg I believe that Morello knows what he is talking about.

  • @samtotheg By saying all Buddy had in his favor was being "a little faster with his hands" is like saying Morello is an idiot himself. Why would he proclaim Buddy as the greatest ever just for being a "little bit faster" than he was? Why are you downplaying your own idol by saying he was an idiot at judging talent?

  • @samtotheg Also, to say Buddy couldn't groove, be musical and play in odd time signatures is so stupid that I don't feel like answering such stupidities. Go get to know Buddy's full body work before and then, come back later. I've got better things to do with my time.

  • replace that vinnie C guy with a guy more on buddys level like joe morello and if it were joe morello vs buddy I would take morello hands down.

  • Buddy, hands down. Colaiuta doesn't even have Buddy's chops.

  • Some people think that music is some kind of sport or technology, according to them Bach or Beethoven are very inferior to our present day musicians.

  • i love both, but BR beats all...vinnie still grooves though!!

  • Alot of great drummers in this world but NO one will ever beat the true master Buddy Rich!

Its a shame such a great musician die without even 2 cents to his name.

RIP My friend, you keep teaching us so many things even after you have been gone for so long!

  • please forgive me but I do not see anything extraordinary in Buddy Rich solo as at absolutely lacks musicality ... vinnie is one of the white drummers who feels the real groove. modern drummers have already reached unreachable for the drummers of buddy rich era...

    it's like to compare

ford t of 1900's with lamborghini of 2000's

  • Comment removed

  • My vote is for Buddy.I Know this is nonsense.Buddy started in the swing era, continued with the boppers and at the end with these guys. The best circus drummer ever.I prefer Max Roach,Art Blakey or Elvin Jones.Music first, then if you like it,exhibitionism.

  • buddy rich, without question.

  • Buddy Rich get my vote

  • Buddy rich is the best !!!! 100%

  • Buddy Rich was a absolute monster.

    Id go

    1. Rich

    2. Cobham

    3. Steve Gadd

    4. Vinnie

  • Just imagine Buddy Rich with the current equipment, the current sound and sounds;not sure it would be a single question..

Vinnie is outstanding, but Buddy went back on his planet :)

  • This is NOT a 'drum battle', Buddy is dead, Vinnie is not and has more to grow.

This is misleading and pointless. You may as well compare apples and oranges!! Just plain stupid to infer such a thing.

  • Not even close, Buddy takes it, not even close.

  • I love both these drummers individuallly with my all heart and soul for how they make me feel when i see or hear them. I think it would be cool to see them trade and each play the others drumkit

  • Wow, they are both fantastic, but in this particular comparison I would take one hat off for Vinnie and two for Buddy. It was the first time I saw him and I was blown away.

  • I don't think it is possible to compare these two world class drummers.

Buddy was the best. But don't forget to take a look at Joe Morello from the past and Neil Peart from the present.

  • tie

  • They're very good, but Buddy is...I don't have words for describe him. Amazing.

  • i love Bubby R. and his love for a snare dominate sounding solo. But Vinnie is pushing the sound your likely hearing now which is a bit more modern to me. But for lack of argument Bubby Started something so im wit him.

  • Buddy, hands down. Though I'm never gunna amount to .0000000000000000000000000000001% of either of them. Phenomenal drummers.

  • Vinnie is being shown in this movie lol, he's not of Buddy's league...

imo closest thing to Buddy is Neil Peart :p

  • Buddy Rich is Chuck Norris of drumming...no drummer should be compared with him. And Vinnie Colaiuta like other great drummers has his own dignity.

  • NO "VS" when we are talking about Buddy !

  • Vinnie and Buddy both top drummers in their time

  • Buddy!!!

  • Did Vinnie practice? Mel Torme said Buddy played in front of an audience at 18 months the first time he played drums and kept time. We know he never practiced, except when he rehearsed with the band or performed. They can both keep impeccable time. It seems more natural for Buddy.

  • You cant compare Vinni n bud cuz richie over here takes cakes blindfolded sucka

  • ofcourse buddy rulz

  • Tom Selleck is an AWSOME actor!!!!! Blue Bloods rule!!!!!!

  • Isreal will destoy America!! Isreali commando's R crem da la creme. understand me chumps!!! America needs 2 WAKee the **** up and smell what the rock is brewin'

  • @MrTrueblue00 How does that relate to this video in any way, shape, or form?

  • Buddy is far more of a showman. Vinnie's chops are top-notch, but Buddy is way more fun to watch. What on EARTH is with the hydraulic heads? I guess everybody went through that phase in the 80s. They sound terrible.

  • I think Vinnie doesn't show us exactly what he can do

  • Son bateros totalmente diferentes , no se puede comparar .

  • Vinnie was from another planet when I saw him at PASIC Universal City,Ca in 83 or 85. SCARY good....... I saw Buddy at a Long Island supper club 8 weeks after his open heart surgery with one of his pickup big bands. I gotta choose Buddy. Man when he was on Carson doing a drum battle with Ed Shaughnessy

  • Buddy Rich THe best

  • Buddy Rich is unrivaled. Still the greatest drummer to ever exist. But Vinnie still deserves a respectful nod!

  • @RizBlantonDrums , you should listen to Billy Cobham ,and it is possible for you to change your opnion

  • wow are difficult !°!°!°!°

  • Buddy can't be touched.

  • I respect both as drummers but Buddy was the one that started my interest in the drums back when i was 12 yrs old I'm 56 now and still rockin in bands

  • Not a very fair match, Rich is a few leagues higher than Colaiuta. I mean, even his face expression yells: "Out of your league, "buddy"".

    That was not a pun.

  • Stewart Copeland! Do I need to say more!?

  • 51 people play the clarinet.

  • The thing with Vinnie is that I'm yet to see him perform again to the same level of awesomeness as he did here. I don't understand these guys... Tony Royster Jr. was another one who could never quite equal his own playing later on, whereas with Buddy, he performed as brilliantly for an uncountable number of times (something you can see for yourself on youtube). Vinnie has never played this beautifully again (at least not on video).

  • Buddy Rich still is the best drummer of all times !!!!!

  • I believe Buddy has this one. Not taking anything away from Vinnie because he is also a really amazing Drummer.

  • Buddy!!

  • Two Drum Solos recorded almost 20 years apart using different equipment and using different drums and Drumheads! Buddy's most likely using single ply heads and his drums ring and sing whilst Vinnie was in a phase using those horrid "Hydraulic" heads and bass drum dampening robbing him of musicality, dynamique and range of sound. Not very good for a Jazz Setting! How and ever, no one can deny the musical genius that either of these posessed, both true masters of the drums.

  • When you get to this level of drummers, it's tough to say who's the best, because they're the best at different things. At some point it just comes down to personal preference, like it does in this case.

I like them both, but Steve Gadd is my favorite of all time. He's the best at just sticking that groove.

  • Just to clear this up: Buddy Rich was well-versed in all styles of music -- his rock chops were great, as well as pop, funk, country, etc. I think what sets Vinnie apart from his peers (past and present) is his phrasing and the ability to flip whatever he's doing and turn it upside down within a solid, rhythmic structure and then be able to find his way back instantly -- without missing a beat. His hand / foot combinations are unparallelled -- he's a true, musical genius and a very cool guy.

  • My mind... it is blown.

  • Buddy was an innovator and had monster chops and some of the most insane snare work in history. Overall I'd have to go for Vinnie because not only does he have insane chops but he's also one of the most versatile drummers ever to sit behind a kit. How many other drummers can say they played with Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck, Sting, Herbie Hancock AND Megadeath? That's range right there, folks. Plus, he's obviously an alien, so I give him extra credit for blending in so well on our planet.

  • Neil Peart!

  • And by the way, when talking about Buddy's speed and stick control - yes it was phenomenal, but that's such a narrow part of what drumming (especially in a larger musical context) is all about. There are a number of drum corps guys who can do what he did. Also, if you expand the definition of technique to include mathematical rhythmic challenges, then guys like Thomas Lang could quash Buddy. He's a great drummer and did a lot for those who came after him. That doesn't make him the "best" ...

  • @rockin982 drum corp guys!? doing what buddy is able to do.... not even. on average drummer corps people dont even play as fast and second, theyre stuck to one drum, not a set of drums.other then that ur pretty much right.

  • One thing that I haven't seen mentioned much is the fact that Buddy Rich, while he was a master jazz drummer, never really developed much of a reputation for playing anything other than big band jazz. Vinnie, on the other hand, is well recorded across a number of different genres, jazz being only one of them. So if it's who can play Channel One Suite better, then maybe Buddy, but when it comes to creating the perfect feel for Sting's Seven Days ...

  • Both are Gods ! Nuff said.

  • Buddy did it in a sweater Vinnie did it in a suit thats badass in itself!!

  • I didn't know Richard Dawson played drums?

  • gota be buddy....the drum god

  • BUddy easily ... nobody comes even close

  • rich always use the snare is kinda annoying

  • As a Rock guy I say Vinnie, Zappa-Sting-Megadeth

As a Jazz guy I say Buddy, Artie Shaw, Harry James, Les Brown.

    Did I answer the question?????

  • Little known fact: Buddy Rich never had any formal lessons, and reportedly never practiced outside of his performances. He was just naturally gifted, playing from the time he was 4 years old. Vinnie is good, but Buddy just takes it to a whole other level.

  • @DrFunkensteinQpsi if that's true i admire him even more.

  • How does Buddy Rich play the snare with that much tilt away from him?!?!

  • BUDDY IS MY BUDDY

  • They are no comparable,,both are master in their own style. i love them both

  • Buddy rich

  • Buddy Rich wins hands down.

  • Both guys are from another planet, but Buddy gets the win on stick control alone. No one with that kind of control today, Steve Smith comes closest. And Buddy's touch is unparalleled.

  • @horyclap68 IDK... I'd rate Jojo Mayer up there with stick control as well.

  • Apples and oranges. Seen them both. Vinnie played like he practiced a lot. Buddy played like he never practiced. What Buddy did you can't learn from practicing; you have to be born with it.

  • @jonsilence Well said, it actually makes tons of sense about the practicing part of it.

  • Both are totally amazing, so I say it's a tie

  • No winner here. I can't judge styles or technicality. These guys are just freaking amazing.

  • Both are great talents! Both have added so much to the drumming community. I LOVE Vinnie, BUT...Buddy is an original. Alot technique Vinnie has, he probably either got from Buddy or stems from Buddys awesome influence. Having said that...Nuttin but love for the both of them!

  • @Tikitiki200 Well put. Indeed, Buddy was an "originator" ... hang'n he and his band out to the listener's and critics alike during a time when big bands just, well, weren't. He laid enormous groundwork on a very basic road kit with a few microphones. He will always be "The Man" of drumming. Regardless, and so nice of you to lay it out, both are indeed great at what they do!

  • Can't decide. As already said Vinnie has recording technology on his side. I love them both for what they have brought to drumming. Buddy with say Frank and Vinnie with Jeff Beck. I can't and wouldn't split them by ability.

  • no one in this world will ever surpass buddy rich...the solo with frank sinatra orchestra demonstrate it...

  • Well Vinnie is a beast, but Buddy open the door for monsters of drumming, I wish Buddy had the same technology to mic his kit back then , Vinnie sounds crisp and clean , Buddy is more raw and in you face... Aaaaaahhhhhh I CANT DECIDE!!!!!

  • BR.

  • Meaningless exercise. They're simply two world class drummers from different eras. Also not very useful to compare using one example of each drummer. More academic rigour required to create something useful.

  • BUDDY HAHAHA

  • buddy

  • Winner for musicality =Vinnie

Winner for technique/ hand chops =Buddy

Winner for overall chops (hand technique, foot technique, linear patterns, coordination) = hard to say because buddy gets the hand chops which is big but vinnie gets everything else, probably a tie overall

Winner for musical versatility = Vinnie

    Winner for overall impact =Buddy

    Winner for musicianship =Vinnie

OVERALL WINNER IS ...........NEITHER!........because you can't decisively make a conclusion as to who is best ;)

  • Buddy is SICK

  • Joe Morello....

  • SICK!

  • Buddy rich was great.

  • gots to be buddy. hes painting with his drumming. that is all.

  • For sure my two favorite drummers of all time. I love Vinnie's smoothness and groove, but Buddy Rich...is Buddy Rich. The guy wrote the book. Just beautiful!

  • wow... that is all i can say... wow!! both spectacular.

  • Buddy Rich & Vinnie Colaiuta are the best drummers in the world... but BUDDY RICH = No.1

  • no comparison

  • Buddy is the baddest. Single kick and all single strokes. Can't touch him, in my opinion.

  • @soxn4

all single strokes?? That is a fairy-tale, Buddy practically wrote the book on the 26 rudiments and their application, at the time. He's the most dangerous rudimental drummer out there (and yes his single strokes were SICK)

  • Just my opinion:

I had seen Buddy live on many ocasions and he had serious chops. But what he did was not musical. It was percussive masturbation. Vinnie is a great musical drummer. The real comparison should be between Mel lewis and Buddy Rich however. Mel is by far my favorite big band drummer with John Von Ohlen coming in second.

  • buddy .. forever

  • I give this one to Vinnie on his very unique smooth sound.

  • Vinnie is far more versatile however Buddy is the ultimate big band master, no one's gonna match that resume (for several reasons). In most musical cases I take the more modern and well rounded Vinne, however Buddy is just devastating and well, Buddy when it comes to what he did.

  • With great respect to both drummers, can you really compare? Buddy comes from an era where the kick bass was generally for accents only. What Vinnie does with the Kick, Buddy could do in time, and vice versa. When you boil it down to chops, Buddy wins. Buddy probably holds the chops category for all time and certainly says to all drummers with each note, "match this". Buddy set a very high mark for all drummers. I just think we all should shoot for that mark. Vinnie is certainly "there".

  • Buddy invented all of the tricks that Vinnie uses. Both are drum Gods, but I will have to side with the inventor and legend.....

  • It would make more sense to me if you were at least comparing based on the solo style. The only thing comparable here is stick technique, and they're both really good traditional stick. But one is a more prog/dnb style solo and one is a more traditional jazz type solo. I prefer Buddy's jazz style solo in this, the mic's on the other kit sounded crap and the footage of Vinnie was to broken up cutting off parts of the riffs.

  • Buddy: The Best...

  • Buddy's solo seems a lot more "musical" in this video, so I'll go with him in this case. Vinnie is just going for the 'hit every drum at once' approach, which isn't my taste.
