@lotsofcoolify If nothing turns on and its plugged in. 1st check cicuit breaker to if it tripped, if so reset it. 2nd check the oven's fuse by removing its cover. It'll be located close to where the power cord goes in. It's a small 1-1/4" x 1/4" tube either made of glass or ceramic. Usually either a 15A or 20A fuse. -MrFixit
My microwave when turned on just makes a hummming noise and works just does not heat anything up, and it makes a electrical smell. when I unplug the Magnetron the electrical smell goes away.
@sisdavid The magnetron is bad. the smell comes from the insulation used to prevent the High Voltage arcing to ground. the humming you are hearing is the result of the electrical discharge thru the insulation that separates the power wires from the metal casing of the magnetron. the insulation has dry rotted causing a short. -MrFixit
I have a oster otm1101 gbs microwave every time i pulg it up it blows the fuse on the socket i tried a different socket and does the same thing it blows the fuse and gotta go and reset the the main fuse box the house . can you help me with some ideas what it may be? the microwave is not even a year old
@addy3dia It could be a diode or a capacitor that has fail-shorted. I would check to make sure the diode and capacitor are functioning to their specs first.
@huqstuff That's an interesting microwave. It uses the new 'Microwave Inverting' technology. These are not the conventional microwaves. The technology is new to me. I'll have to research to learn more. This technology allows the magnetron's power output to be adjustable by varying the power to the magnetron. In conventional microwaves, the magnetron's power output is either fully 'ON' or 'OFF' controlled by a timer. Sorry, I can't help you on this one, but its something for me to learn. -MrFixit
@huqstuff I'd say either the inverter is bad or the oven is shorting out. Power Inverters will shut down if there's an overload on the output, the input voltage drops below 10.6VDC, or the input voltage goes above 15VDC. Should be able to bypass the inverter using a 15A protected circuit. If the oven works fine w/o inverter than oven is fine. If not then something on the HV side is causing the overload. Can you send the model # so can better assit you? -MrFixit
@chilani123 if there are continuous popping noises while cooking, it sounds as though the Magnetron is shorting. The insulation that prevents the HV wires from arcing has degraded causing the HV to arc making popping noise. There is no fix other than replacing the oven. Replacing the magnetron cost more than the oven itself. -MrFixit
Also, you said to wait at least 15-30 minutes for the capacitor to fully discharge. It shouldn't discharge at all throughout time unless of course something is drawing power from it. (This is why unplugging the "tube" of a TV is extremely dangerous because it may sit there for years but if you unplug it, it still carries quite a few thousand volts of power. During the electronics class said the best way to discharge a capacitor is use a jumper wire (anything conductive) to short out the pins.
@flightmaster178 A milliapere can kill. Although I respect your comment, People with pace makers, heart problems, etc. Could die if an electrial current disruption/stops the heart. The HV capacitor in microwave ovens cannot hold a significant charge. Why? There is a 100 Megaohm resistor made into the HV capacitor to allow it to discharge safely once the power is removed. 15-30 minutes allows time for the charge to disapate to safe levels. CRTs have a static charge that does not disapate.-MrFixit
@flightmaster178 your welcome. You made good points about discharging capacitors, but instead of shorting them with a jumper wire, use a resistor to safely discharge capactors. Some capacitors can hold large enough charge they will 'weld' the jumper to its terminals. Old microwaves had the resistor installed outside the capacitor that tied to the terminals. Many people don't know about the internal resistor cause you can't see it. -MrFixit
@ 3:51 you said "High voltage can knock you on your butt, and kill you. Even at 120 volts" I'm not trying to be rude, but this is a false statement. The voltage isn't what kills. Sure I agree, it may knock you down, or make you jump at least, but it doesn't "kill." What kills a person (electrical wise) is the amperage that is being carried throughout the circuit.

@jeffbriggs1987 If the power cuts off after 2 seconds, you may have a faulty door switch or a bad thermal cut off. WhizKid has a video dealing with this type of problem. It takes 3 seconds to energize the magnetron. If the clock stops (I.e. opened the door) then u have a bad door switch. If the entire power cuts out, then a fuse is going bad or a thermal cut-off is bad. It mainly depends on the type of microwave wheather its mechanical or electronic timers. Need further help let us know.-MrFixit
@ESRepair the microwave is panasonic the genius,it says the inverter on the front and its white, if i try to cook with it it runs for exactly 2 seconds every time, and ass soon as u hear that kind of powering up sound it cuts off, the timer doesnt stay on, it goes back to the clock time as if u had pushed clear. Is there something i can do to fix it myself for free? thanks
@jeffbriggs1987 Its either a faulty door switch or the inverter. There are @ least 2 door switches that control the MW. If enough current passes thru a weak contact, it will cause the switch to open prematurely thus the MW turns off. Another problem could be the inverter itself. The inverter increase 12VDC to 120VAC. You can bypass the inverter using a 14awg-3 conductor cord to plug MW to the house and see if it still cuts off. Note the wires black (hot), white (neutral), & green (ground) >>>
@jeffbriggs1987 The black wire (HOT) uses the small blade, the white (neutral) use the blade with fat blade tip, and the green (ground) use the center round pin on the plug. If the MW still cuts off then it is the MW itself. I'd say its the door switch if not the inverter. -MrFixit
Hi, Thanks for your great video, I was checking my microwave after it stopped working and the main fuse was ok, the HV cap was ok, the voltage into the transformer was ok so I looked deeper and found there is a large fuse between the transformer and the magnetron which is blown. Is this normal, can it be replaced or does it indicate a problem with the magnetron? Thanks!
@orbitaaltube I never seen a fuse on the HV side of the microwave oven. I'd say it's the HV diode. The HV side consists a transformer, a magnetron, a HV diode, a HV capacitor, and a resistor (built into the capacitor on newer models). The diode is often the culprit as to why they stop heating. You can watch my "Testing diodes" video to test the diode. They can easily be replaced for around $20. Be sure you reconnect the diode same way it was removed. Their polarity is very important. -MrFixit
@ESRepair Thanks for your reply. Yep its definitely a fuse, my microwave is European so maybe there is different legislation here. The microwave is almost identical to the one you have in your video 'How microwave ovens work'
@orbitaaltube Interesting, but does makes since. Since it is definately a fuse, than the magnetron must be shorting out. This is usually caused by the degredation of the insulator which insulates the conductors, as it goes thru the center to the vacuum tube, from arcing to ground. One side of the HV transformer coil is tied to ground. Bad insulator in the magnetron will cause the transformer to short out, thus causing the fuse to blow. Magnetron will need replaced. -MrFixit
@Dionydejesus I'd lay my money down on the transformer gone bad. The insulation has deteriated enough to allow the coils to short producing excessive heat. The HV transformer can cost up to $160 new. -MrFixit
@bobodd5 Hey in my microwave there is a fuse between the HV side of the cap and diode and the magnetron which is blown, have you replaced this fuse before or should I leave it alone in case the magentron has caused it to blow. thanks

i have a microwave everything works but every time i try to warm up something it throws out smoke and smells really bad what do you think is the problem
@nikhilkapoorca It sounds that either the magnetron or the HV transformer is bad. If its smoking really bad and the smell, I'd say the HV transformer is shorting internally. -MrFixit
@nikhilkapoorca open the microwave door, look over to your right whare the magnatron output is, you should see a square opening with a plate over it, what color is the plate? if it has burned out then it should be brown or discolored, once this happens the carbon causes conductivity and thus smokes and burns when you turn it on, you can remove this plate and see if it stops. but you should probly just get a new oven
@counkev That will depend on what is shorting out. If the HV transformer or the Magnetron are shorting out, all you can do is replace the component which are expensive. If the HV diode or HV capacitor are shorting, these can easily be replaced with used parts from a discarded microwave oven. Need to first determine what's shorting out, then we can go from there. -MrFixit
@ESRepair It is most likely the HV diode or HV capacitor because she said she had someone look at it and they said it could be fixed. Would it be easy to fix and can you buy the parts from Home depot or True Value? Thanks I appreciate it.
@counkev The HV diode is usually the culprit in my experience. Sorry, these components can only be purchased by repair shops and supplies chains who deal with microwave ovens due to the HV they produce. you can look up the part number online to find suppliers. The diode can cost around $16 or more depending on the supplier. A simple test can determine if it's the diode or capacitor. The diode and capacitor can easily be replaced. -MrFixit
@juan13131316 From the sounds of it Juan, either the control board or the keypad is bad. Double check the board connectors. Some control boards have on-board 5x20mm or 1-1/4 x 1/4in type fuses, check those if any. In many cases that I've seen, the material used in touch-keypads wear to the point they do not make contact to circuit board and need replaced. -MrFixit
dude, if i waited 15 mins. between repairs i'd be broke.Just discharge the cap by crossing the terminal with a screwdriver.OR...OR get ya'all a discharging device like yer drunk buddies tongue.
@eastsidesigns1 Are you volunteering, numb nuts? 15 minutes between what repairs? This video is intended for the consumer household. Most homes only have 1 microwave oven. How do you discharge the HV capacitor or the internal power supply, for that matter, before removing the cover?? If you're broke between repairs, you're not doing something right. -MrFixit
@alcidesgarcia Thank you. As for the Microwave oven, the melting of the insulated connector to the HV transformer may indicate the primary side is failing (shorting). The transformer does heat up due to the load the magnetron draws from it, however, if the connector caused high resistance this will cause it to get hot & melt. Replace the connector w/ the same heavy duty insulated connector (15-amp). Also check the HV diode and capacitor to see if they are shorted or bad. -MrFixit

Why buy a new microwave when this works just fine?? As for the shirt, I don't wear my good clothes while working on stuff, idiot. I drive a truck for a living and the money is good, why waste it? If I wanted to waste money, I'd go work for the government....
@RATSORATM I am glad this video helped with your microwave oven. Many problems can be resolved from a $5 part, however, there are times when buying something new is cheaper than fixing it...
@abbas1959 this video will help with the basic in trouble shooting a microwave oven. It' is an old microwave but the newer ones do have more components to check. I should update the video for the newer Microwave ovens.
@dddo1it There is sound with the video, however, it's only on the right speaker. I am in the process of getting the proper cable for the CAM to use stereo sound. Be sure your computer and software is up to date.

tonybodaga315 11 months ago
@tonybodaga315 That's why I brought it home, numb nuts. I had it in my truck for a month and brought it home to clean, but decided to make the video to help Insider while it was apart.

Many problems can be resolved from a $5 part, however, there are times when buying something new is cheaper than fixing it...

abbas1959 1 year ago
@abbas1959 this video will help with the basic in trouble shooting a microwave oven. It' is an old microwave but the newer ones do have more components to check. I should update the video for the newer Microwave ovens.

What is wrong with the sound? I can't hear a thing?
dddo1it 1 year ago
@dddo1it There is sound with the video, however, it's only on the right speaker. I am in the process of getting the proper cable for the CAM to use stereo sound. Be sure your computer and software is up to date.
