Of all the commentators, politicians, etc. that I have listened to over the years no one has ever articulated the meaning of the culture war in the manner that Pat Buchanan did on that night in Houston. I was talking about those states, which have voted heavily Democrat since 1992, after voting Republican in the many elections before it. The people in those states do not believe in oppressing gays who are born as such and don't choose it, don't believe in church+state, and don't believe in government telling women when and if to have a child.

New York and Mass have been mostly Democratic for decades now. California has become more Democratic because of the increase in minorities out there. I'm sure some moderates after the Media went crazy about this speech maybe went Democratic but to say this speech was the sole cause or even the main reason for these states voting democratic now is off base in my humble opinion.

Connecticut was a Republican state for 5 elections before 1992, as was Maine, New Jersey and New Hampshire for 6 elections before 1992, as was Michigan, Delaware and Pennsylvania for 3 straight elections before 1992. I've lived in Michigan all my life. Guess what? It's not expected to be a democratic state, like it always is, this state is a toss up. Nothing in this speech was radical: they were the beliefs of mainstream Americans or conservatives of the heart. Buchanan did extremely well in New Hampshire. The reason the Republicans lost these states is because the party lost the Reagan Democrats.

The Republican part lost the REagan Democrats buy acting like big government liberals. Bush raised taxes for example. You can also argue that the GOP's support of every single "free trade" agreement lost them these states. Buchanan didn't support NAFTA and GATT.

Blaming Buchanan for Bush's loss in 92 is revisionist history. What about the Perot factor?

We'll see what happens in Michigan. Obama is ahead right now. I'm not going to promise a Michigan victory for John McCain, but it's certainly not a lock for the Democrat. Our state had a Republican Gov for 12 years, with a Republican legislature for many of those years.

Voter turn out will be high in Detroit, but West Michigan is very Conservative and I think some blue collar democrats will go for McCain.

I'll have to go back and due some research sometime about the Perot factor again.
