In our ride over the Rhotang Pass from Manali it was quite clear... the bigger the rig the greater the right of way... actually, this is the way it is in New Delhi, too!
In October the Tatas are bringing supplies to the villages and encampments for the Winter... since all of these road will be totally impassable for months ahead...
I'm sorry to belabor this but I had to mention that when we were almost in Manali I saw a flight of 3 MiG 15 jets flying up a valley about half a mile away and below us slightly. I fly and it was particularly thrilling for me to see "alien" jets flying so close. The USSR was still the "enemy" and those jets hadn't been seen inside the USA at that time. If I was younger I'd love to go back and do it all over again.
All this happened about 30 years ago, to put it in perspective. Going up from Manali I saw a wooden plaque that said "you are about to enter the second highest motorable road in the world" "Built by H. M Royal Marines in 1946" as best I can recall. I believe the next town after you cross the bridge was Ladakh. The fellow driving me was worried because his little yellow and black taxi was losing power. I tried to explain about the altitude and the oxygen level...to no avail. what memories.
I forgot to mention the busses were so old that the only horn they had was a big, brass horn just outside the drivers window and had a rubber bulb for him to squeeze to blow it. I see the diesel exhaust from these trucks and can still almost smell the fumes from the busses. We stopped for the night at a power company "guest house" about halfway up.I had a time explaining what "hard boiled eggs" meant to the guy who fed us...he finally caught on and said "Oh..you mean FULL BOILED"...lol
This took me back quite a few years...I hired a guy to drive me from Delhi up to Manali, India years ago and this looks a LOT like the road we had to use. we'd meet those huge London double decker busses coming down as we were going up...no guard rail either. Needless to say I was about to wet my pants the whole time.
Good reasons for population control.

When you were 4? Watching jets that never flew with the Indian Air force. 27 years after the first MIG 15 was seen in the US? I smell bullshit!
