Never forget how electric it was for Grover and his audience that evening in Austin, TX at La Zona Rosa. He said,"Austin, you guys really know how to party!, "I'll be back!" Of course, he passed away a year later. Being a sax player, had him sign my Winelight CD. He wrote "Manny-keep playing my sax-playing Brotha!" Still playing too!
Of all the jazz sets I have attended, nobody ever gave me my money's worth like Grover! No other athlete had/has a flat out jazz hit that is dedicated to him by such an icon! Two of my all time faves in their chosen fields. The only thing that may have made this vid better is showing The Doc giving Bird and Michael Cooper the business!
The complete Greatest Sports Legends episode with Dr. J and this song is on Youtube. Can any jazz/soul expert look at it and answer a question of mine? The song played over the final credits, as the Doctor and host Ken Howard are shooting hoops is a different song, very popular theme heard in movies, TV, restaurants. It sounds like Washington's music, but I cannot connect it to any song of hs, or Quincy Jones. Most people will recognize it immediately but
@sportshistorybuff The title of the song is It's Your Thing orginally written and performed by The Isley Brothers. Of course it has been covered by many artists...not sure which artists is playing it in the particular video you're referring.

dislikes??? you really have no idea what good music is... how sad for you..... Grover Washington ..... the brother got it going on 4 real! HOTTA FIRE!!!
Just a classic song off a classic album there aren't many you listen to from the first and last song and say it's perfect these days. R.I.P. Richard Tee, Eric Gale and Grover Washington Jr. Heaven has one hell of a band singing and playing with the Angels.
This song was used in the Greatest Sports Legends tribute to the Doctor, but during the closing credits, as host Ken Howard and Julius were shooting hoops, there was another popular seventies jazz theme played, a more upbeat piece which we have all heard on many occasions. Anybody know what the closing tune was? I am not sure if it was another Washington song, or a different artist.
Nooooo waaaayyy....Grover washington, mah godd...This hombre is just too, too soulful...too jazzy....man, love the combination of the dr,jay footage...Love and praise from LA. RIP Grover, You ARE the MAN!
LOVE IT!! And I totally love the footage of my Philadelphia 76ers back when they were a FORCE in the NBA!! What a TEAM that was!! Ahhhhhhh...let it FLOW!!
Mine too...and yes he did..it is one of my top three FAVORITE Grover tunes. And I heard that Grover used to play the SSB at most of the Sixers home games back in the 80s.
Please teach me the title of song that I have ever before, GWJr play with high tone ladie's vocalist , she sang newyork skyscraper. That's a super high tone vocal & high tone swell of GWJr's sax.
Hey did you do your homework. This cut was made for Dr. J "LET IT FLOW". Taking away the basketball footage is destroying the song period. Grover had vision for this classic tune because of Dr. J. playing the game & his beauty on the court.W/O him we dont have this video & most of all we dont have this classic jazz tune.
Truly a case of greatness inspiring greatness, eh? I have a question for you. I was watching the "NBA at 50" documentary some time ago, and there was a piece on Earl "The Pearl" Monroe featured. As a very nice highlight reel of his career came on, a song came on in the background, with a chorus uttering "Bllaaaaack Jesuuuuuus" I have been my damndest to track down that song. Any ideas as to who sang it? All the same, great commentary there.
The Footage of watching M.J. is like watching Dr. J since we all know that the DOC did it first, and most of you young cats have never seen footage of the DOC in the ABA when he was really dunking hard on everybody, he has always been my favorite player!!!
What a groove. I'm listening to this trying to play bass with it and Anthony's heavy sound is not easily emulated. It's in those fingers of his. Great tune.
After 25 years of watching this clip, the only thing wrong with this is that Dr. J's baseline move against the Lakers in '80 ain't in here. I was a die-hard Lakers fan back then, but even as little kid, I knew that was one of Doc's signature plays.
this the type of music that bring tears to ur eyes because we have lost it, what the hell r we hearing today, this is what i play when i want my kids to leave me alone. close ur eyes and let it vibe in u
My Pops... The Original Mr. Drayton, put me on to Grover Washington, Jr. at a young age. Been loving his music, Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Miles Davis, Willie Colon, & George Benson ever since
I've been searching for this video for years. The greatest sports video of all time, featuring one of the greatest athletes I ever saw. The Doctor! Wow!, was he ever poetry in motion. Beautiful baby.
A master at his craft, he is truly missed...there will never be another like him. I am truly blessed to have the honor of listening to his music...his music is timeless and will live forever.
Most likely it's some sort of phase shifter. I've been trying to figure out which one he's using for YEARS. You can get a similar sound with a SMALL STONE phaser set in the lower position, but it's not the same the Richard is using. It could be a UNI-VIBE. His sound is little phatter than a regular phase shifter; maybe a chorus pedal thrown in for good measure.
I asked one of my homies, and he said that it might be the Poly-Stereo Phase. It's made by Electro-Harmonix as well...sort of a Small Stone on steroids.
So memorable this song is. Thank you Lord for Grover and may he delight in your grace with heavenly music. Thank God for Dr. J as well for inspiring this wonderful track as played by the whole jazz band. Marks6338, good recognition brother.
dr. j. and grover washington jr. i remember from my youth cause grover use to play the national anthem before the Sixers games and the way the Zink would introduce him, well you had to be there. What a trifecta!!!
Can you imagine being in that audience right then ? That must have been something. And, you know he invented the genre. Dave Koz, Chris Botti.....they all came after, and copied Grover. Before Grover there was no smooth jazz, it was a completely new sound that nobody'd heard before. This is probably one of my three favorites. I like East River Drive, and the Sad Samba as well.
LOL, I agree with ODawg. Doc was the greateast Bball player of all time. I remember crying as a kid when he retired from the game. MJ learned all of his tricks from the Doctor.
I saw doc film his first converse commercial at the fieldhouse. they brought in some big lights, and they brought in doc and he did just what you see here, slamming on stiffs in san Antonio shirts with thier hands up, from all angles, for about 45 minutes.
So, so, classy...however, I think, it's not just for the Doctor, it's for the great, savvy NBA stars of the 70s, like Earl The Pearl Monroe, Walt Clyde Frazier, George Gervin, etc...however, the Doc is the best among them. =)
I first heard this from the winelight album in the early 80's back in London; I ahd just started to play jazz tenor sax; STILL my fav of his and even now, when I play it, I prefer to play on Tenor, rather than alto! Jazz is now poorer due to his untimely death!
I always liked this song (since it was my intro to Marcus Miller--although I didn't know it at the time), but I LOVE the Anthony Jackson plays this...dropping down to the low notes instead of resting.
Man this iz 1 of my favorite songs..My dad iz a sax player so I grew up on all this.... So when he's doing a smaller gig like for a club, I always request this song, he really tares it up too, itz a whole band song also he lets everybody get a solo on this 1...
Notice how after beat 4 of the bridge, Gadd twirls his stick on the ride, and doesn't even miss a beat! Also notice how Doc takes three steps against the Knicks!
You've got THAT right. He was a WONDERFUL musician, and he had such a dynamic, polished presence. I got to see him three times over the years. No one sounds quite like Grover.
I'm still mourning this great musician who played directly into my soul. Thank God I got to see him perform live a few times. What a thrill! He was always awesome!
Oh man, I've been looking for this song for about 12 years of Sundays. The used to play it on a smooth jazz program that came on Sunday morning back when I was a teen, but they took it off the air. Man, I'm so glad to have bumped into this. And, paired with the Doctor, this is so coo!

Proof positive that the DOCTOR is greater than "Air Jordan": the DOCTOR has his own theme song...and it STILL gets played on the radio. ;-)

Oh man, I've been looking for this song for about 12 years of Sundays. The used to play it on a smooth jazz program that came on Sunday morning back when I was a teen, but they took it off the air. Man, I'm so glad to have bumped into this. And, paired with the Doctor, this is so coo!
