  • Never forget how electric it was for Grover and his audience that evening in Austin, TX at La Zona Rosa. He said,"Austin, you guys really know how to party!, "I'll be back!" Of course, he passed away a year later. Being a sax player, had him sign my Winelight CD. He wrote "Manny-keep playing my sax-playing Brotha!" Still playing too!

  • Of all the jazz sets I have attended, nobody ever gave me my money's worth like Grover! No other athlete had/has a flat out jazz hit that is dedicated to him by such an icon! Two of my all time faves in their chosen fields. The only thing that may have made this vid better is showing The Doc giving Bird and Michael Cooper the business!

  • @onlyjaz GWJ was a class act, all the way. Miss the brother..........

  • It's amazing that Grover could capture the gracefulness of Julius Erving PERFECTLY...

  • I so miss his sound..... !!!!

great Dr. J. footage at the beginnig. Brother Grover truly captured the fluidity of his game with this song!!!

  • ESTA CANCION ME TRAE GRANDES RECUERDOS DE DR. J.JUST GREAT

  • Many thanks! I've been asking about this title for ages, been driving me up the wall since

    the song is so familiar.

  • The complete Greatest Sports Legends episode with Dr. J and this song is on Youtube. Can any jazz/soul expert look at it and answer a question of mine? The song played over the final credits, as the Doctor and host Ken Howard are shooting hoops is a different song, very popular theme heard in movies, TV, restaurants. It sounds like Washington's music, but I cannot connect it to any song of hs, or Quincy Jones. Most people will recognize it immediately but

I want to tknow the artist/title.

  • @sportshistorybuff The title of the song is It's Your Thing orginally written and performed by The Isley Brothers. Of course it has been covered by many artists...not sure which artists is playing it in the particular video you're referring.

  • Is there a better song to celebrate the artistry of the great Julius Erving?

  • And are some people talking about Michael Jordan's jump ability... Dr. J still on my mind and not Georgia. ;-))

  • les trottoirs des rues de mon enfance étaient faites en ...terre battue!!! exactement comme celle des courts de tennis de Roland Garros!!! Veridique!

  • THIS IS NOT smooth Jazz, THIS IS JAZZ; The MAN was smooth....

  • GROVER LIKE AS DR.J OF SAXES.

  • This song was used in the Greatest Sports Legends tribute to the Doctor, but during the closing credits, as host Ken Howard and Julius were shooting hoops, there was another popular seventies jazz theme played, a more upbeat piece which we have all heard on many occasions. Anybody know what the closing tune was? I am not sure if it was another Washington song, or a different artist.

  • Grover, you left us far too soon... Damn!

  • they don't make smooth jazz like this anymore : (

  • Nooooo waaaayyy....Grover washington, mah godd...This hombre is just too, too soulful...too jazzy....man, love the combination of the dr,jay footage...Love and praise from LA. RIP Grover, You ARE the MAN!

  • Just Beautiful... Thanks So Much !

  • grover was a mad groover. RIP!

  • DR J!

  • LOVE IT!! And I totally love the footage of my Philadelphia 76ers back when they were a FORCE in the NBA!! What a TEAM that was!! Ahhhhhhh...let it FLOW!!

    Hugs from Philly...

  • Ahh..the concert at the Shubert theater. CLASSIC!!!

  • Grover...................

  • alas three of them no longer with us sadly grover ,eric ,richard ,past away in the fifies .r.i.p.

  • SMOOTH AS DR.J'S DUNK

  • Anthony Jackson, That brother just bubbles like champagne on bass

  • some insane(good) sax and bass playing.

  • Doc J is my alltime favorite Bball player. Grover really did a nice tribute for him.

  • Mine too...and yes he did..it is one of my top three FAVORITE Grover tunes. And I heard that Grover used to play the SSB at most of the Sixers home games back in the 80s.

  • To me the absolute greatest sax jazz musican that ever lived. No one could ever make me change my opinion.

  • anthony jackson is sick!!!!!!wooooo fonkeh

  • Please teach me the title of song that I have ever before, GWJr play with high tone ladie's vocalist , she sang newyork skyscraper. That's a super high tone vocal & high tone swell of GWJr's sax.

  • Two ladies that come to mind...

Patti Labelle on "The Best is Yet ToCome". And I do remember her following Grover's sax with the swells...

And the late Phyllis Hyman on "Sacred Kind of Love".

  • Thank you "MsTexas73".

I heared that two songs about 20 years ago, at his old albums.

Probably, my favorite songs are "The best is yet to come".

Suddenly I find it at Youtube.

  • Thanks for post'n. I forgot about t his tune. Any fan of Grover's has got to be COOL!

  • Hey did you do your homework. This cut was made for Dr. J "LET IT FLOW". Taking away the basketball footage is destroying the song period. Grover had vision for this classic tune because of Dr. J. playing the game & his beauty on the court.W/O him we dont have this video & most of all we dont have this classic jazz tune.

  • Truly a case of greatness inspiring greatness, eh? I have a question for you. I was watching the "NBA at 50" documentary some time ago, and there was a piece on Earl "The Pearl" Monroe featured. As a very nice highlight reel of his career came on, a song came on in the background, with a chorus uttering "Bllaaaaack Jesuuuuuus" I have been my damndest to track down that song. Any ideas as to who sang it? All the same, great commentary there.

  • hey this song is about dr j

  • Grover and eric taken from us both at the age 56 we all miss you.

  • Philly was a hell of a town in those days!

  • eric gale, stevie gadd ,richard tee ,are legends no need to mention the others because the music tells you its beyond words.

  • Absolute Magic!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The groove is sooo relaxed. And so was JE. It's as if they all LIVED in The Zone.

Look at all those little kids on stage! AJ playing a Fender bass! Gadd with his afro! Ah, the good old days...

    Thanks for posting this.

  • Grover the Great Lives !

  • Very Philly!

  • way beyond greatness...

  • The Footage of watching M.J. is like watching Dr. J since we all know that the DOC did it first, and most of you young cats have never seen footage of the DOC in the ABA when he was really dunking hard on everybody, he has always been my favorite player!!!

  • best funk/contemparary jazz band ever! its as good as a Resse Cup

  • What a groove. I'm listening to this trying to play bass with it and Anthony's heavy sound is not easily emulated. It's in those fingers of his. Great tune.

  • Smooth as silk! R.I.P GW!

  • Rest in Peace Grover Washington, Jr

  • After 25 years of watching this clip, the only thing wrong with this is that Dr. J's baseline move against the Lakers in '80 ain't in here. I was a die-hard Lakers fan back then, but even as little kid, I knew that was one of Doc's signature plays.

  • ???

  • this the type of music that bring tears to ur eyes because we have lost it, what the hell r we hearing today, this is what i play when i want my kids to leave me alone. close ur eyes and let it vibe in u

  • Very nice video. 5 stars.

  • My Pops... The Original Mr. Drayton, put me on to Grover Washington, Jr. at a young age. Been loving his music, Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Miles Davis, Willie Colon, & George Benson ever since

  • Check out the video at 5:12 when the Bulls player looks at the ref.(maybe thinking:"Are you kidding me?!")

  • This footage of Dr. J is like watching Jordan!

  • Better than that.

  • Classic!Just pure legends both men.

  • This is so beautiful! And Dr.J just walking in the air... This song is Dr. J, smooth, full of grace and soul. Grover and Doc I miss you.

  • Easy on the ears. What a class act. RIP Grover we miss you !!!

  • Ah, the glory days of the Sixers with Doc leading a dunk contest in warm-ups and Grover coming out to play the national anthem before the game!

  • I ask myself, the bass that Anthony Jackson used there, Is it a Fender Jazz Bass?

  • I luv it. I wish every song could sound like this. R.I.P Grover

  • RIP Grover...RIP.

  • why is everyone asking about some phase on the dudes guitar. This is about grover and dr. jay.

  • great sound

  • Dr. "J" the Greatest of all time!!!!

  • really? this is classified as smooth jazz?

  • Well smooth Jazz i the umbrella term, but technically it is proper Jazz Funk.

  • He was a master and he will be missed! RIP Grover!!!

  • yes, sirree, this is a classic video from a great album and time. thanks for posting!

  • classic. period.

  • yes you are rigth

  • The MJ before MJ ment "The Best Alive". Dr. J.So good he inspired Grover Washington Jr.

  • Oh Yes, I would be remiss to leave out, Grover Washington Jr. awesome album "Winelight" We miss you.

  • I've been searching for this video for years. The greatest sports video of all time, featuring one of the greatest athletes I ever saw. The Doctor! Wow!, was he ever poetry in motion. Beautiful baby.

  • does anyone know what kind of effects eric gale is using, sound like a wha wha but a more suttle type

  • A master at his craft, he is truly missed...there will never be another like him. I am truly blessed to have the honor of listening to his music...his music is timeless and will live forever.

  • anyone know the effect that richard tee has on his fender rhodes?

  • Most likely it's some sort of phase shifter. I've been trying to figure out which one he's using for YEARS. You can get a similar sound with a SMALL STONE phaser set in the lower position, but it's not the same the Richard is using. It could be a UNI-VIBE. His sound is little phatter than a regular phase shifter; maybe a chorus pedal thrown in for good measure.

  • I heard that it's the small stone. I bought one and it sounds exactly the same.

  • I asked one of my homies, and he said that it might be the Poly-Stereo Phase. It's made by Electro-Harmonix as well...sort of a Small Stone on steroids.

  • oh well idk, this guy that said he was tee's rhodie said it's the stone, but we'll probably never know for sure.

  • One of my all time favorites ... Barnone!

  • It lets me flow.

  • the master at his best.big lou

  • So memorable this song is. Thank you Lord for Grover and may he delight in your grace with heavenly music. Thank God for Dr. J as well for inspiring this wonderful track as played by the whole jazz band. Marks6338, good recognition brother.

  • R.I.P., Grover Washington..:(

  • Great post, great music. I can't get enough of this song. Notice Steve Gadd's simple and effective style of drumming, for which he's famous for.

  • Dr. J and Grover, All time greats

  • dr. j. and grover washington jr. i remember from my youth cause grover use to play the national anthem before the Sixers games and the way the Zink would introduce him, well you had to be there. What a trifecta!!!

  • yes i was 7 years old but i do remember the zink julius ervinggggggggggg

  • Can you imagine being in that audience right then ? That must have been something. And, you know he invented the genre. Dave Koz, Chris Botti.....they all came after, and copied Grover. Before Grover there was no smooth jazz, it was a completely new sound that nobody'd heard before. This is probably one of my three favorites. I like East River Drive, and the Sad Samba as well.

  • この曲はワインライトの中でも

    大好きなナンバーです。

  • Grover & Dr. J.....the best of the best!

Wow this was a great lineup, Ralph McDonald on percussion, Steve Gadd on Drums, Richard Tee on the Keyboard, Eric Gale on guitar!

  • I believe Anthony Jackson is on bass. He maybe under-rated and over- looked. His grove is strong and very funky...

  • he is truly missed smooth on the sax

  • hey grover was a master of the sax !

  • LOL, I agree with ODawg. Doc was the greateast Bball player of all time. I remember crying as a kid when he retired from the game. MJ learned all of his tricks from the Doctor.

  • I grew up on this sxxt. Never saw this video though

  • I saw doc film his first converse commercial at the fieldhouse. they brought in some big lights, and they brought in doc and he did just what you see here, slamming on stiffs in san Antonio shirts with thier hands up, from all angles, for about 45 minutes.

  • So, so, classy...however, I think, it's not just for the Doctor, it's for the great, savvy NBA stars of the 70s, like Earl The Pearl Monroe, Walt Clyde Frazier, George Gervin, etc...however, the Doc is the best among them. =)

  • I first heard this from the winelight album in the early 80's back in London; I ahd just started to play jazz tenor sax; STILL my fav of his and even now, when I play it, I prefer to play on Tenor, rather than alto! Jazz is now poorer due to his untimely death!

  • I always liked this song (since it was my intro to Marcus Miller--although I didn't know it at the time), but I LOVE the Anthony Jackson plays this...dropping down to the low notes instead of resting.

  • Proof positive that the DOCTOR is greater than "Air Jordan": the DOCTOR has his own theme song...and it STILL gets played on the radio. ;-)

  • can't take away from MJ but Dr J will always be the dunk master

  • Man this iz 1 of my favorite songs..My dad iz a sax player so I grew up on all this.... So when he's doing a smaller gig like for a club, I always request this song, he really tares it up too, itz a whole band song also he lets everybody get a solo on this 1...

  • Notice how after beat 4 of the bridge, Gadd twirls his stick on the ride, and doesn't even miss a beat! Also notice how Doc takes three steps against the Knicks!

  • OOOHHHH I was twelve years old, I ve got the feeling I'm flying whenever i hear it thank for having post it thks you so much

  • You can't not love Grover. Ain't that right yal.

  • Sure do miss his music ! :( HE was tuff .

  • You've got THAT right. He was a WONDERFUL musician, and he had such a dynamic, polished presence. I got to see him three times over the years. No one sounds quite like Grover.

  • Where does this come from? Any more Dr. J highlights?

  • Go to Julius Erving and hit search you will find more

    Doctor J highlights

  • This dude goes wild live!!! Much more feeling than the recordings.

  • YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS i am going fly with this songggggggggggg uauauuauauauauauauauau

  • Great music - (great bass player also - Anthony Jackson)

  • "Let It Flow (For Dr. J)" is one of my favorite songs of all time.....BUT THE LIVE VERSION OWNS!!!!!

    RIP Grover, you're the greatest!

  • so smooth..lovely song..and bass line too;)thanks!

  • I'm still mourning this great musician who played directly into my soul. Thank God I got to see him perform live a few times. What a thrill! He was always awesome!

  • That bass line is the funkiest jazziest kick ass line ever... listen to his fills!!!

    Grover R.I.P

  • sixers fan and grover fan here.. i dig it.

  • Oh man, I've been looking for this song for about 12 years of Sundays. The used to play it on a smooth jazz program that came on Sunday morning back when I was a teen, but they took it off the air. Man, I'm so glad to have bumped into this. And, paired with the Doctor, this is so coo!

  • Fantastic, love the bassline and his Grover's superb tone my favourite Grover Washington track, this and Saulsalito
