Pure MAgic! I had the privelege to shake his hand at the blue note NY this october 2011.He had a standing ovation there even before he started to play.
Living legend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yeah is really great to listen and dream ... I remember I bought a CD more than 20 years ago and we sailed in the Baltic Sea. We sailed over night, Three of the crew where sleeping, I was alone on the stearing in a starlighted night. I never, ever forget this feeling.
*bonk* feuyhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh <------ Me falling asleep slamming my head onto my keyboard.
i don't want to be lazy on the gig, but sometimes I'm spent from a song, and I see little time has passed. I know i have to bring it again and again. I notice because "the dream" is only 4:17 and it feels like he's given his all, everything.
I remember learning the alto sax, way back in the day, sitting on my porch with this ringing in my ears, jotting down the notes as a 12 year old... This is and always will be amazing and inspiring.
I see a man sitting at a table, head in hands, struggling with all the failures of his life; considering all he has to offer and determined to make amends and make a difference. At the end of the song standing tall, head high, ready to take on the world. Such a powerful song.
I grew up on these two albums Change Of Heart and Close Up David blows straight from the heart like my other favs Grover Washington, Charles Miller (WAR), Don Myrick (EWF) and Charlie Bird Parker
my 10 yr old son who started to love playing sax 9 months ago can't stop his feet, hand and head swinging as we watched David in HK cultural center few hours ago (29-11-10). I thank God for David's wonderful alto sax music, it inspires me and my son to continue to play and enjoy music.
If you compare this to the chorus of "Everytime we touch" it actually sounds a little alike. But this is made first, and it is also, without any doubt, the most beautiful of them. It actually makes you dream :)
reminds me of the good ole 80's i loved david sanborn so much back then and had lots of great memories while listening to the close up cd especially leslie ann that was one of my most favorite track
His set up is easy... At this time this video was made, a Selmer Mark VI alto, Bobby Dukoff Mouthpiece and a lot of time in the woodshed. I still think he's using the same set up today.
michael sembello wrote the tune in his sleep. He woke up and just started writing the tune he was dreaming about and called it "The Dream" and then called Sanborn and said I have a new tune for you..... Ask dave sanborn yourrself he tells the story at his gigs every once in a blue moon.
@avendus I concur . . . Saw Sanborn's show about 5 months ago (Feb. '10) and he did "The Dream" as an encore and before he started to play, he recanted that same story about Sembello. I've seen many top-notch sax players perform over the years but bar none -- David puts on the very best show. There is just a class and quality to his playing that can't be explained.
This song, "The Dream" strengthens me to NEVER GIVE UP!!! NEVER, NEVER, EVER GIVE UP YOUR DREAMS!!! I believe our dreams shape and define us. Someone famous once said, "If you can dream it, then you can do it!!!" I do not believe THAT GOD WOULD HAVE us DREAM ABOUT ANYTHING THAT WE COULD NOT ACHIEVE!!! HE IS NOT A CRUEL FATHER, HE WANTS ALL THE BEST FOR HIS children!!! "The Dream" will be the song that my bridesmaids march into the church with. I will appear at the height of the song.
The coloring of this song is on another plane in another realm. Noone else could give a jazz song the type of character that David Sanborn can. It's not just a bunch of haphazard notes that he's playing here. There's passion and thought behind them. That's what makes him the best at what he does.
@TanzaniteDiamonds Hi!! that's Phil Perry on male vocal always, singing with the Lee Ritenour Group. And this tune was written by Great Bass player MARCUS MILLER
@zicmudigger Thank you so much, for this valuable information. Love it! I apologize for the delay in responding. (I don't like YouTube's new format).☺

Someone that thinks there is some sort of moral flaw is pretty screwed up. I mean what can anyone find wrong with this. It is beyond my understanding.
In the early 90s Sanborn did a video on an island setting. I think the song was "Bang Bang." There was a really scruffy male dancer with worn out chukka boots and screwy looking hat and very pretty young woman in a red dress dancing with him. Have any of you seen this video? If you have please address any info you have to my online name or if you don't mind put it here. Thanks.
This is wonderful song and wonderful musician. I haven't heard a record by Dave Sandborn in a long time. I think I may have hit a Sandborn motherload.
The way he ad-libbed on this was even more fluid than what he did on record. I wish he would've recorded this version instead! It's just that the bit plates breaks so extremely fast because you need a rather stong embosure to play the dukoffs since the mpc is so small, thefore you tend to bite through the bite plate to fast. IS there anything I can do?? Also does Sanborn use bite plates??
You are able to get thicker plates but they take a bit to get used to. Sanborn generally doesn't but he doent need to now he probably did when he started out, bite plates are there to help you form the correct embosure. eventually you'll find you won't need them
