  • I remember when he had his radio show, love this song!

  • Pure MAgic! I had the privelege to shake his hand at the blue note NY this october 2011.He had a standing ovation there even before he started to play.

    Living legend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the combination of sanborn and Perry is eargasmic. sooo beautiful

  • Sanborn is a sweetheart. You can hear it coming through his horn. ~

  • INCREIBLE!!, EXELENTE!!

  • yeah is really great to listen and dream ... I remember I bought a CD more than 20 years ago and we sailed in the Baltic Sea. We sailed over night, Three of the crew where sleeping, I was alone on the stearing in a starlighted night. I never, ever forget this feeling.

  • Wonderful saxophonist David Sanborn

  • i love this guy

  • *bonk* feuyhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh <------ Me falling asleep slamming my head onto my keyboard.

  • To call this level of artistry "smooth jazz" is an understatement.

    Long live Mr Sanborn.

And.... thanks God for his talent.

  • i like smooth jazz

  • Heard it first in college - saw him play live at Waikiki Shell at base of Diamond Head - and made it my wedding song. 'nuff said.....

  • Sweet

  • i don't want to be lazy on the gig, but sometimes I'm spent from a song, and I see little time has passed. I know i have to bring it again and again. I notice because "the dream" is only 4:17 and it feels like he's given his all, everything.

  • This music ..... is a blessing to the world

  • I remember learning the alto sax, way back in the day, sitting on my porch with this ringing in my ears, jotting down the notes as a 12 year old... This is and always will be amazing and inspiring.

  • this music rocked me to love and to sleep and to adore jazz of all kinds....thanks to Kirkwood native..Peace.

  • does anybody know the chords?

  • @nord1991 go to saxshe.com it has plenty of sax music from famous sax players and more

  • I see a man sitting at a table, head in hands, struggling with all the failures of his life; considering all he has to offer and determined to make amends and make a difference. At the end of the song standing tall, head high, ready to take on the world. Such a powerful song.

  • @KevinJ561 u just described my life in one sentence my friend!, and thats exactly what this song makes me wanna do, watch this space ;-).............

  • Great talent, my favorite still Superstar by David. The best ! ! !

  • wonderfull and amazing

  • uma das musicas instrumentais mais marcantes da minha vida, tempo que nao volta mais, saudades anos 80.beautiful songs.

  • 3:21 such a cool vocal line

  • Bellissima! Senza parole.

  • I grew up on these two albums Change Of Heart and Close Up David blows straight from the heart like my other favs Grover Washington, Charles Miller (WAR), Don Myrick (EWF) and Charlie Bird Parker

  • my 10 yr old son who started to love playing sax 9 months ago can't stop his feet, hand and head swinging as we watched David in HK cultural center few hours ago (29-11-10). I thank God for David's wonderful alto sax music, it inspires me and my son to continue to play and enjoy music.

  • this is music

  • If you compare this to the chorus of "Everytime we touch" it actually sounds a little alike. But this is made first, and it is also, without any doubt, the most beautiful of them. It actually makes you dream :)

  • i need the music for this..

  • @obscessity Try playing by ear. It's actually not too bad, and it's a great way to train your ears!

  • For my best friend Patch, The best Dog I ever had. God I miss her........

  • ameizing!!!!!!!!!

  • to me the singer sounds like joe perry

  • reminds me of the good ole 80's i loved david sanborn so much back then and had lots of great memories while listening to the close up cd especially leslie ann that was one of my most favorite track

  • SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEET

  • El mejor instrumento y las mejores manos

  • So Appropriate

  • he didn't call it smooth jazz, he's playing like it's last chance to tell you his dream, praying with his horn for peace and freedom. beautiful

  • @bry3921 Amen to that brother!!!

  • @bry3921 exactly.... great comment.

  • I have a the dream you its true

  • His set up is easy... At this time this video was made, a Selmer Mark VI alto, Bobby Dukoff Mouthpiece and a lot of time in the woodshed. I still think he's using the same set up today.

  • can anyone tell me how is his sax set up???

  • @fhmtv123 MkIV and bobby Dukoff

  • This is one of my favorite saxophone jazz songs of all time

  • When I first heard that really dated synth sound and saw the smoke and spotlights and I was like, oh yeah, here we go. Cheesy power ballad...

And then about midway through I got serious serious chills.

Massive respect to the man, I felt it all the way. Heavy.

  • David Sanborn _____AMAZING PERFORMANCE !! What a sound,! Intense and from the heart.

YOU always amaze us !!!! L O L Doug Gemmell In Las Vegas

  • davids music can change your mind set instantly to good feelings he puts 100 percent to his music !

  • michael sembello wrote the tune in his sleep. He woke up and just started writing the tune he was dreaming about and called it "The Dream" and then called Sanborn and said I have a new tune for you..... Ask dave sanborn yourrself he tells the story at his gigs every once in a blue moon.

  • @avendus I concur . . . Saw Sanborn's show about 5 months ago (Feb. '10) and he did "The Dream" as an encore and before he started to play, he recanted that same story about Sembello. I've seen many top-notch sax players perform over the years but bar none -- David puts on the very best show. There is just a class and quality to his playing that can't be explained.

  • @avendus Oh my bad! I meant to say "he RECALLED that same story . . ." -- not "he recanted that same story . . ." :-)

  • This is just so fluid and full of energy, I wish to achieve this level of beauty someday.

  • David Sanborn is the fucking MAN--don't let anyone tell you any different!

  • I always thought this was love and respect for Martin and his dream. David playing like it's his last chance to testify

  • Simply wonderful...

  • thisn't a dream, this is real.just open your eyes and see

  • Tem o playback e a partitura dessa música no site: portaldosax

  • muito bom !!!! Very good !!!

  • This song, "The Dream" strengthens me to NEVER GIVE UP!!! NEVER, NEVER, EVER GIVE UP YOUR DREAMS!!! I believe our dreams shape and define us. Someone famous once said, "If you can dream it, then you can do it!!!" I do not believe THAT GOD WOULD HAVE us DREAM ABOUT ANYTHING THAT WE COULD NOT ACHIEVE!!! HE IS NOT A CRUEL FATHER, HE WANTS ALL THE BEST FOR HIS children!!! "The Dream" will be the song that my bridesmaids march into the church with. I will appear at the height of the song.

  • @judithjjjj1064 You go Judith, could agree more....Best wishes.

  • David always leans toward the funk side. Know matter how mellow. Thing its' the heavy reed he uses.

  • 20 years after hearing this it can still bring a tear to my eye...thanks for posting this x

  • @bev1701 Me too. This song just stirs up so much emotion. So beautiful in such a one-of-a-kind way.

  • this feels like home...fantastic..

  • lindo exelente som !!!

  • E o melhor.!!!!!!!!!!! David Sanborn

  • I wish our ears could hear as well as Mr. Sanborn plays. He clearly overplays most of us in the mortal world.

I pity the folks who think of him as anything but one of the greats.

  • i still can't tell if that's an insult or compliment?????

  • Comment removed

  • the word overplays insinuates a derogatory comment in your sentence, that's why it doesn't make any sense, never touched a bong in my life

  • Hey,

    Sorry for my other comment....

    It was uncalled for.

  • this song makes me relax and feel good

  • Comment removed

  • The coloring of this song is on another plane in another realm. Noone else could give a jazz song the type of character that David Sanborn can. It's not just a bunch of haphazard notes that he's playing here. There's passion and thought behind them. That's what makes him the best at what he does.

  • Immer

wieder wonderful... Gina von Band Sax & Moryson

  • fantastic so beautifull

  • Oh yeah, the man BLOWS IT UP!

  • Absolutely Beautiful!

    Right in my Favorites!!

  • Bravíssimo!

  • EVERYNIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!!

  • Truly, one of the most beautiful pieces of Smooth Jazz music, ever.

Does anyone know who the male vocalist is? :)

  • Male vocalist is phil perry

  • phil perry

  • @TanzaniteDiamonds Hi!! that's Phil Perry on male vocal always, singing with the Lee Ritenour Group. And this tune was written by Great Bass player MARCUS MILLER

  • @zicmudigger Thank you so much, for this valuable information. Love it! I apologize for the delay in responding. (I don't like YouTube's new format).☺

  • @TanzaniteDiamonds Phil Perry is the name...

  • @TanzaniteDiamonds I don't know if this is just Smooth Jazz, it's a bit different.

  • @TanzaniteDiamonds He also played with artists such as The Eagles, Carly Simon, James Taylor, and others.

  • @TanzaniteDiamonds

Well it looks a lot like the fantastic Phil Perry - he sang vocals for Lee Ritenour as well.

    Great voice and expression

  • what a performance...who says jazz has to be in a smokey basement bar...this guy rocks....

  • Brilliant! Absolutely one of the best sax songs of all time.

  • WOW!!! It does not get any better than this!

  • WOAH MANNNNN. This song's good as.

by the way, what's the mouthpiece???

  • hey..check out s club seven's 'never had a dream come true'..it's the same chorus!!

  • you should also listen to dru hill-we're not making love no more....

    also sounds very a like

  • Back in 87 there was a production video of The Dream and Love and Happiness. The dream was featured on VH1 in color and black and white. A sensative and moving view of people at their life in what looks like maybe Chicago or New York. I'd so love to see that once more. My love for this song outlived her love for me, but not my love for her. I miss you Rainelle.....

  • An absolute classic

  • my dads a sax player and for the first 8 years of my life all i remember listenin 2 was this, a trully unforgettable and beautifull song, thanks for postin :-)

  • It's a wonderful Dream. David is awesome, no matter what, no matter who with, Just Keep Playing. Thank you for posting this treasure.

  • After all these years, this song still makes me so emotional. Fantastic!

  • he made the saxphone cry... Greatest

  • wow....

  • David perform in his home town which in Saint Louis, Missouri. He was wonderful. I like this song it was the background music to the I Have A Dream speech on one of the radio stations. However Smile is my favorite.

  • this song is like a poetry, and he is a hell of a poet!

  • Always loved this tune...Atomic kitten i think it was ripped off the melody for the children in need song 7 or 8 years ago...remember?

  • This song pre-dates 1987, I know for it played a pivotal role in my life then.

  • Someone that thinks there is some sort of moral flaw is pretty screwed up. I mean what can anyone find wrong with this. It is beyond my understanding.

  • In the early 90s Sanborn did a video on an island setting. I think the song was "Bang Bang." There was a really scruffy male dancer with worn out chukka boots and screwy looking hat and very pretty young woman in a red dress dancing with him. Have any of you seen this video? If you have please address any info you have to my online name or if you don't mind put it here. Thanks.

  • i like Smile a lot more

  • This is wonderful song and wonderful musician. I haven't heard a record by Dave Sandborn in a long time. I think I may have hit a Sandborn motherload.

  • I like this live version; it's played very gentle.

  • Fabulous!

Just saw David at the San Jose Jazz Festival on Saturday night...he saved the best for last! So glad I found this on Youtube!

    Thanks for posting!

And to David Sanborn...keep touching our hearts!!

  • this is my favorite Sanborn song!

  • Smoooooooooth

  • David Sanborn is THE TRUTH.

The way he ad-libbed on this was even more fluid than what he did on record. I wish he would've recorded this version instead! I like the name of the song, because I've always likened David's music to surrealism (as in the painting style). And surrealism is very dreamy. So the title is fitting. The melodies he comes up with are akin to melodies that are conjured up in my mind when I'm sleeping. I'm a composer, and I would love to put my dreams into music.

  • Beautiful to see this performed live-thanks for posting.

  • Attention all dukoff users!! Is it neccesary to use bite plates when playing the mpcs?? Will it bend otherwise??

  • You use bite plates for comfortablity really not cos it will bend. It also allows you to hav a stronger embrochure

  • It's just that the bit plates breaks so extremely fast because you need a rather stong embosure to play the dukoffs since the mpc is so small, thefore you tend to bite through the bite plate to fast. IS there anything I can do?? Also does Sanborn use bite plates??

  • You are able to get thicker plates but they take a bit to get used to. Sanborn generally doesn't but he doent need to now he probably did when he started out, bite plates are there to help you form the correct embosure. eventually you'll find you won't need them

  • Bite plates allow you to grip on the metal mouthpiece and form a strong emboshure and dont slip but once youve mastered that you wont need them

  • where can I buy the sheet music of this song it amazing David Sanborn play with the heart exelente.

  • where can i buy this video?

  • you dont have to buy it simply download it. install real player 11 and download this video from youtube

  • i'm love it ;]

  • Agreed on the "never get tired of listening to this song" comment- the mark of a truly excellent song. I was so pumped when after over 20 years of being a huge D.Sanborn fan I finally got to see him live some 12 rows away, and only a 10 minute drive from where I live. I was in heaven. This guy is the greatest. What a jam!

  • DAVID, you are genius!!

  • Both Versions of The Dream on youtube totally beat the original recording. David Sanborn is amazing i never get tired of listening to his music. Its the Best

  • he is genius.

  • wedding song for my wife and me!! I love it.....

  • good..... soul touching

  • Song still gives me goosebumps as it did the first time that I heard it.

  • does ne 1 know wat kinda sax Sanborn plays?

  • alto.

  • oh wait.. that isnt what you were talking about...

    crap, sorry

im not sure, but i recognize the emblem on the neck
