1559GODHEAD Did you fall and bump your head? Sandinista Is On Of The Greatest Albums In Rock n Roll & Are You Sure Your Not Thinking Of Something Else..I've seen them over 20 times & it only comes down to one thing.. The CLASH is really the only band that ever mattered..
Sandanista should have been a great double album or a shit-hot Single Album - 3 sides was just too much faffing about - and that is from one of your biggest fans!!!
This is good Clash pop music, with a little edge to it. Of course their punk stuff was great, no one can contest that. But they could really do pop: "Groovy Times", "Should I stay or should I go", "Train in Vain", "Lost in the Supermarket", and of course "Rock the Casbah"
@DevoDevoT That's very true! Plus you have "City of the Dead", "Stay Free", "jail guitar doors" "hitsville uk", ....they really could do any kind of music, but everything was still Clash Style. Very very very rare...
I won't claim to be a hardcore fan of The Clash...I bought The Essential Clash compilation and I didn't like many of the songs on the first disc at all (I Fought The Law being the obvious exception...too bad it's a cover). The second disc with the stuff from the later albums had gems like this on. Never heard it before but now it might be my favourite song of theirs.
The relentless, pounding rhythm of the Clash at their very best with a beautifully understated vocal by Mick Jones; the violence of the act is in the music, the reflection on the act is in the voice. Recently here in Melbourne, Australia, Arthur Freeman threw his four year old daughter Darcey off a high bridge to her death in a river as an act of wicked vengance against his ex-wife. As the song says, "Somebody got murdered/And left me with a touch".
I love this song but some way or another I can't listen to it through the end with out breaking down and crying. I lost 2 very important people in life, killed wrongfully.
mick jones voice is so fucking epic on this song.."Ive been verry tempted to grab it from the till... Ive been verrry hungry... but not enuf to kill......SOME BODY GOT MURDERED... SOMEBODYS... DEAD FOREVER..."
Such a powerful track that gives perfect insight into the basic parts of humanity that can unite us all. Today violence is so glorified in popular music and media...Hail the Clash for taking a stand and saying no!
I was 15 when the Clash debut with the UK 1st album Great band the covered it all Punk, Reggae ,Funk, Gospel no ban could do this RIP JOE WE MISS YOU :(
The Funny thing was that Joe never thought of them as a punk rock band. In an interview he once said"we're rock n roll band with a fucking purpose!!" I couldn't have agreed more...
Thats interesting and I certainly agree, but in the opening lines of "The Future is Un-Written" Joe refers to himself Punk Warlord. But I have also felt the clash were so much bigger than punk...so much more depth and diversity
@wyoraider86 Ya know I can also remember Joe calling an idiot music reporter an ignorant cunt during an interview once.LMAO So he may just have been sick of being asked the same mundane questions now that I think of it.Figured he'd throw the reporter a loop saying they weren't a "punk band" but in essence he is right on both accounts.. Rock and roll with a purpose /punk band
is it ttly just me or does anyone else see that if you drop the lyrics and stop the one continual beat to choppy and add regee with new lyrics thats its mia, paper planes
I think ONE of the things that distinguished "The Clash" was their superb ability to produce music that was entertaining, but politically substantive as well. While I consider them "punk" in most respects, their sound was more broad-based - an edgy, socially-minded kind of alternative pop. Because they appealed to a wider audience than most "punk" bands, they were able to get their message out to the masses. Therein lies their genius. These lads are exemplary artists.
Gentlemen, When you make an album you can decide what songs you think should be on it. If the clash didn't do what they "should" have done, We wouldn't know of them. True Art... Take it or leave it.
Yep the last album Cut the crap you could tell there was no Mick Jones and no topper- awfull drum machine, This is England was a pretty cool song but hard to like that album
Well, I prefer The Clash (especially the UK version), maybe Give 'Em Enough Rope and London Calling from Sandinsta, simply because it's more in the genre I prefer, but that doesn't mean that it's horrible. If you want a horrible album check out Cut the Crap.
But if you like music like the one off London Calling, and nothing else, obviously you wouldn't like Sandinista.
Tilfeldig123 i know what your saying m8, its just my opinion that this album was to long and not good enough songs on it, the first 3 albums were class but Sandinista and cut the crap were nowhere near as good as the Clash uk,Rope and Calling
cut the crap shouldnt even be considered as a clash album. mick and topper were gone. joe and paul were barely there. it was basically a solo album for their manager as he did most of the work on it.
@crunchafyme im pretty sure that was a reply to someone elses comment. why do you even care btw? is cut the crap like a favorite of yours or something?
@grrranger175 Haha wow I had no idea. I mean I knew Topper and Mick were gone, but I thought it was Joe's album. Well, good to know. Joe just got even cooler.
2 or 3? Magnificent seven, junco partner, somebody got murdered, one more time, sound of the sinners, police on my back, call up, washington bullets, charlie dont surf, street parade.thtas 10, not bad for a horrible album
Mick basically wrote all the music. Joe wrote the lyrics. On songs like this, that Mick Jones sings on, he wrote both the music and the lyrics.

What about Ivan Meets G.I. Joe?

The fact that it's different don't make it horrible, I think it's great how the Clash really developed their music.
