I was at this game and was looking right at this incident from start to finish. Cooke ran over Kovalchuk as Kovy was headed off for a line change and was looking the other way. It was well behind the play and Kovalchuk was just taking up for himself. Both got 5 minutes fighting penalties but Kovalchuk also got a double minor and a 10 minute misconduct. The referees never see what starts these things.

Kovy was an idiot for even dropping the gloves when his team was still trying to win the game. Your best player doesn't do you much good when he's sitting in hte penalty box, which is what Cooke set out to do. He simply outsmarted Kovalchuk and it worked liek a charm.  The funny thing is that the Thrashers actually mounted a late game comeback, and they probably could've tied it had Kovy been out there. There's some karma for you ;)
