I'd just like to add this now, yes, the FJ made is farther up the hill than the rock crawlers. But i would also like to add that note the amount of speed the FJ had going up, so much that he nearly ramped it. The rock CRAWLERS just slowly crawled up it, which, in low traction situations like this just doesn't work, you need the momentum.

My stock Jeep Tj 4.0 4x4 on 30" toyo all terrains could make it up this. Just because something is 4 linked with coilovers doesn't mean it is always better at certain off road aspects. It's 90% driver experience, 10% rig. I just bought my jeep today, this is my 4th jeep I have ever owned. And my 16th rig. Got rid of my Toyota, Absolutely hated it. Will never buy another toyota.

im not shitting on the offroad abilities of the fj, but i remember looking under one at a dealership and to my surprise the fucken thing had a cheesy piece of plastic for a skid plate over the transfer case....to top it off, it was actually connected to the t-case....what a turn-off !
@ronnied828 Yeah sounds like a piece of shit. Though... the T-case skid is always connected to the T-case. The skid actually supports the whole driveline and puts it in correct alignment. If you ever remove the skid (like on my TJ) you have to jack up the tranny or the whole driveline will sag down and hang. I guess plastic looks better, though, and doesn't rust. Nice job, toyota.

@FrogJeep420 I don't hate, really. The FJ is a sweet truck. And I'm not sure what you are talking about with that last thing you said. And some stock guys might be scared to follow you on the trail, yeah. Fact remains, though, that with 35" tires and 6" of lift, etc... I can follow a full body rig like an xterra, FJ, land rover... pretty much anywhere. Just because after the size of an obstacle gets to a certain point, your stock angles (approach, departure, etc.) start to really hurt you.

@FrogJeep420 I dont have a cherokee, I have a wrangler. A TJ. And jumps are sweet but I didn't buy it to pre-run, I bought it to crawl, climb and explore the wilderness. It's no surprise jeeps don't want to follow you on jumps though. Your indy suspension handles that much better than solid axles. But if I want to go off a jump, I'll go with my buddy in his truck with a long travel kit, dual rate king coilovers, 37's and a supercharger. Wranglers and cherokees are not designed for jumping.

@nationalcitysycho FJ is the fuel code. It used to be the Toyota Jeep BJ when the US government wanted it to replace Willy's Jeep during the Korean war, BJ is the fuel code for diesel. If you were to look at an FJ40 it looks almost identical to an old Jeep, because once again, it replaced Jeep in the Korean war...Jeeps are such cliche 4x4 anyways, there great rides though...I just find it funny that every FJ vid on YouTube will have a ton of FJ bashing, as if Jeepers feel threatened by the comp.

@nzcamerakid .Good Rock Crawler have dual transfer cases so therefore have the ability to do well in loose dirt or rocks. If these didnt have a Dual Transfer Case set up then that means they were junk as well. I have a dual set up on a 87 4Runner that can fly through mud or creep over rocks. Just depends on the setup.

the only reason that it broke is cause the driver was being stupid and launched the front off the ground and put all the stress from the free front wheels and the not free rear wheels onto the tcase.
Surprised none made it up. looked like the first guy was in too low of a gear and therefore couldn't carry enough momentum. Thats transfer case fluid leaking out of the FJ. Despite the skid plate. From mountain biking and off-road driving you find out that momentum is the key. The FJ driver had the right idea and the most balls but he paid a price. FJs are nice but I'll stick to my Jeep TJ. Both excellent off road is properly set up.

a good percentage of rock crawling rigs have 7000+ stall torgue converters to aide in keeping the axles and transmissions in one piece...in other words 7000 rpms from a crawlers motor is about 2000 with a regulars trans
The FJ may have out climbed the rock-crawlers, but they were still running at the end of the day. A lift may get you over some stuff, but you still need proper armor - that bent up OEM step rail is a clue. The first mod for my XTerra was rock sliders, next is a full set of skids, then comes suspension to handle the added weight of the armored bumpers that are to follow.
No amount of lift would have prevented the bottoming at the crest of that hill.

@BX02 Actually, yes..most AMATEUR race car drivers DO perform their own work on their cars. And that's what this guy is...AMATEUR (clearly depicted in this video). He obviously doesn't know crap about his truck or the proper equipment needed. With off-roading you should know how to fix your own rig on the spot in case there's a failure and you're out on the trails somewhere.
FJ's have their place but Yesterday we recovered an FJ Cruiser that went over the edge of a 60 foot cliff into a riverbed. It would have been impossible to recover without our Jeeps. the width of the trail plus the weight and location of the lost rig would have made it damn near impossible to do the job with any other vehicle. long live Jeep. 93' YJ wrangler 4 inch lift + 33'' tires, stock 4.0L.
@hayhowrevop90 We took 3 Jeeps with winches, got to where the wreck was, found a rock higher above our trail in the mountain and slung a wire. Rigged a pulley system and ran the winch lines to the wreck. Then pulled the wreck up to the trail. Attached a tow line from the rig to my buddy's Jeep and another line from his Jeep to mine, and we dragged the wreck the 9 miles to the highway where a flatbed tow truck took it away. @ihateu1979 a stock jeep would have never made it out to where we had to go. shoot, i dont think anything stock would have made it. i had to really fight with my rig to follow my fellow rescuers out to where the wreck was. i was lucky i didn't break anything critical. should've just swapped in a Lefty if you're really committed about hitting the trails. You majorly overpaid for a new OEM Tcase and install. Not to mention, 4WD not working later on was probably just the ADD actuator on the front diff. Take it apart, clean the dirt out, grease it back up and put it back together. BAM. 4WD.

I'd just like to add this now, yes, the FJ made is farther up the hill than the rock crawlers. But i would also like to add that note the amount of speed the FJ had going up, so much that he nearly ramped it. The rock CRAWLERS just slowly crawled up it, which, in low traction situations like this just doesn't work, you need the momentum.

My stock Jeep Tj 4.0 4x4 on 30" toyo all terrains could make it up this. Just because something is 4 linked with coilovers doesn't mean it is always better at certain off road aspects. It's 90% driver experience, 10% rig. I just bought my jeep today, this is my 4th jeep I have ever owned. And my 16th rig. Got rid of my Toyota, Absolutely hated it. Will never buy another toyota.
These FJ Cruisers have THE WORST FUCKING BLIND SPOTS EVER by the way... a huge flaw about them on highway/trails.

It's funny to watch you guys argue. Different vehicles excel at different things. My 8 year old's little 70cc dirt bike would make short work of that hill in one easy try. Does that mean it's superior to a Wrangler or an FJ? No, of course not. It's just more suited to one particular task, that's all.

im not shitting on the offroad abilities of the fj, but i remember looking under one at a dealership and to my surprise the fucken thing had a cheesy piece of plastic for a skid plate over the transfer case....to top it off, it was actually connected to the t-case....what a turn-off !

@ronnied828 Yeah sounds like a piece of shit. Though... the T-case skid is always connected to the T-case. The skid actually supports the whole driveline and puts it in correct alignment. If you ever remove the skid (like on my TJ) you have to jack up the tranny or the whole driveline will sag down and hang. I guess plastic looks better, though, and doesn't rust. Nice job, toyota.

@FrogJeep420 I don't hate, really. The FJ is a sweet truck. And I'm not sure what you are talking about with that last thing you said. And some stock guys might be scared to follow you on the trail, yeah. Fact remains, though, that with 35" tires and 6" of lift, etc... I can follow a full body rig like an xterra, FJ, land rover... pretty much anywhere. Just because after the size of an obstacle gets to a certain point, your stock angles (approach, departure, etc.) start to really hurt you.

@FrogJeep420 I dont have a cherokee, I have a wrangler. A TJ. And jumps are sweet but I didn't buy it to pre-run, I bought it to crawl, climb and explore the wilderness. It's no surprise jeeps don't want to follow you on jumps though. Your indy suspension handles that much better than solid axles. But if I want to go off a jump, I'll go with my buddy in his truck with a long travel kit, dual rate king coilovers, 37's and a supercharger. Wranglers and cherokees are not designed for jumping.

If anything, the FJ is decent at all things. It will be out crawled by a jeep with solid axles, it will be out-jumped and out-run by a truck, and it isn't as smooth as a cadillac or mercedes. So if you like the mediocrity factor... cool. But telling me that your FJ is a "pre-runner" and a "rock crawler" is not true.

@nationalcitysycho FJ is the fuel code. It used to be the Toyota Jeep BJ when the US government wanted it to replace Willy's Jeep during the Korean war, BJ is the fuel code for diesel. If you were to look at an FJ40 it looks almost identical to an old Jeep, because once again, it replaced Jeep in the Korean war...Jeeps are such cliche 4x4 anyways, there great rides though...I just find it funny that every FJ vid on YouTube will have a ton of FJ bashing, as if Jeepers feel threatened by the comp.

@nzcamerakid .Good Rock Crawler have dual transfer cases so therefore have the ability to do well in loose dirt or rocks. If these didnt have a Dual Transfer Case set up then that means they were junk as well. I have a dual set up on a 87 4Runner that can fly through mud or creep over rocks. Just depends on the setup.

Surprised none made it up. looked like the first guy was in too low of a gear and therefore couldn't carry enough momentum. Thats transfer case fluid leaking out of the FJ. Despite the skid plate. From mountain biking and off-road driving you find out that momentum is the key. The FJ driver had the right idea and the most balls but he paid a price. FJs are nice but I'll stick to my Jeep TJ. Both excellent off road is properly set up.

a good percentage of rock crawling rigs have 7000+ stall torgue converters to aide in keeping the axles and transmissions in one piece...in other words 7000 rpms from a crawlers motor is about 2000 with a regulars trans

The FJ may have out climbed the rock-crawlers, but they were still running at the end of the day. A lift may get you over some stuff, but you still need proper armor - that bent up OEM step rail is a clue. The first mod for my XTerra was rock sliders, next is a full set of skids, then comes suspension to handle the added weight of the armored bumpers that are to follow.
No amount of lift would have prevented the bottoming at the crest of that hill.

@1DarkTC Are you really that naive and obnoxious..you think every race car driver is a mechanic too..you think this guy has no money to spend and worries about the damages,.,if anyone can afford a truck like that, PAY to mod it out..and afford to destroy it..believe me.,.he writes his repairs off as fun-cost..don't rag on someone who has a hobby but isn't a master at every level of it.. I'm sure if you have a camera and you break it, you're a master camera-tech and can probably fix it yourself..

@BX02 Actually, yes..most AMATEUR race car drivers DO perform their own work on their cars. And that's what this guy is...AMATEUR (clearly depicted in this video). He obviously doesn't know crap about his truck or the proper equipment needed. With off-roading you should know how to fix your own rig on the spot in case there's a failure and you're out on the trails somewhere.

FJ's have their place but Yesterday we recovered an FJ Cruiser that went over the edge of a 60 foot cliff into a riverbed. It would have been impossible to recover without our Jeeps. the width of the trail plus the weight and location of the lost rig would have made it damn near impossible to do the job with any other vehicle. long live Jeep. 93' YJ wrangler 4 inch lift + 33'' tires, stock 4.0L.

@hayhowrevop90 We took 3 Jeeps with winches, got to where the wreck was, found a rock higher above our trail in the mountain and slung a wire. Rigged a pulley system and ran the winch lines to the wreck. Then pulled the wreck up to the trail. Attached a tow line from the rig to my buddy's Jeep and another line from his Jeep to mine, and we dragged the wreck the 9 miles to the highway where a flatbed tow truck took it away. @ihateu1979 a stock jeep would have never made it out to where we had to go. shoot, i dont think anything stock would have made it. i had to really fight with my rig to follow my fellow rescuers out to where the wreck was. i was lucky i didn't break anything critical. (i will need a new paint job soon though...)

Dont get me wrong, it was impressive as hell for what looks to be basically stock (if not totally stock, I dont know) but I wouldnt call that out climbing them.

should've just swapped in a Lefty if you're really committed about hitting the trails. You majorly overpaid for a new OEM Tcase and install. Not to mention, 4WD not working later on was probably just the ADD actuator on the front diff. Take it apart, clean the dirt out, grease it back up and put it back together. BAM. 4WD.

wow. my girlfriend drives a stock 01 tj and literally climbes hills bigger than that in 4l. you didnt outclimb ALL of them. you outclimbed one of them. a sami. that jeep wouldve drove over your fj and all the way up the hill. learn to crawl... listen to these guys, "you made it farther than them yehaw". yep. the jeep also drove home at the end of the day.
