What mosed performers and opera directors don't realise is that you can't base a whole stage performance on voice alone, its not a concertante, it's an opera and drama is extremly important. A bad performance can have a huge effect on the music. Happily you see performances that realise that...p.s thankyou Callas for making that quite clear

I wish you had posted the whole number, including the dance at the beginning. It's amazing. I saw this live at Covent Garden last night with Christine Rice as Carmen - previously Antonacci was my favorite Carmen mainly because of her acting, but I always thought her voice wasn't the best suited for it. Now Rice is my favorite because she sings and acts flawlessly.

This is once again a bloody awful production from the ROH. The opera itself tends to bring the worse from directors , Zefferelli, Hall, etc They forget this is a Frenchmans view of Spain, it's a very French opera indeed. The best production I ever was involved in was in 1981 in Nancy, director Antoine Boursellier with Nadine Denize as Carmen, then again on tour 1982/83 with Glenys Linos

...hm..i`ve seen better than this...but...it`s very good...in spirit of carmen...you`re right, she is not stripper,but it`s just carmen...she does all that to seduce everyone around her...i love her...i must say...in some parts i don`t think that antonacci is right for the part...but in others she is good...jonas kaufman...omg...he has the most wonderful voice, and i cried when i watched 4.act when he kills her...they did it so great...whole show is very,very good...but jonas is the best!!! <3

You have to remember this is a stage production though, everything is done for a reason. As well as the fact that it is set some ago. So, the fact that she's being depicted ON STAGE taking of her top in those times and behaving in that manner suggests she is a whore. Comparing it to someone dancing in a club today NOT in a production is irrelevant.
