I remember Dave and Mark coming by to help us work out while I was in high school and they were driving back from OU to California for Christmas break. They were always willing to share with us at tournaments, workouts, and in passing.
Interesting to see Kenny Monday congratulating Dave after the match because the smae Full Nelson used to win this one was broken as an illegal hold in the Olympic Trials the following year in Pensacola when Leroy Evans was on the whistle.
Dave was a great wrestler and a class guy. I had the "misfortune" to wrestle him in my home town of Cleveland, OH in 1976. He was 17 and beat me on my own move! I was 24, & couldn't believe i lost to a high-schooler. His teammates from Calif. consoled me, saying he was the hottest prospect for college. Well, he went on to win many freestyle & Greco championships, 2 NCAA's, & the World & Olympic Games! Was a natural with hip movement & counters, a prodigy for the sport if ever there was one!
absolute beast.......when he wrestled in high school he was'nt allowed to put guys in a front headlock because it rendered too many kids unconscious ............lol one of a kind.
hmmm, I dno. That sounds like clips from the memorial service. Katie Couric did a 7 minute piece in 96 with a lot of family clips and such. Could be that. I think it was done for the games that year
I'm not sure exactly what piece your talking about. Theres a pretty good memorial type video posted on youtube right now though. However, if anyone knows where to find video of my uncle's UFC 9 fight on the internet, that would be awesome.
The best thing about dave was like boris said he was respected in all countries. He was not just an american wrestler but a wrestler period it was his love and I love that man for it. Dave died when I was 12yrs old and I did not get to watch him live in any event. However I try to watch as much as I can of him because I think he was probably the greatest ambassador of this sport for the united states. You will live forever in my heart dave schultz!
I very liked 1991 bout against Adlan Varaev, David was behind almost all the match,
but a few seconds before the end succeeded to trhow him for 3 points and got even, when Varaev already stood behind him.
Later on he beated him in overtime.
But the amaizing thing is that in the middle of the match, russian commentator told to crowd "The main quality of this american wrestler is that he always fights to the end"
He was so unpredictable, definitely one of the best wrestlers ever.
I'm training MMA right now, but pretty casually. Definitely a noob white belt. People have fun beating up a Schultz though, lol. Moving out to San Diego next year though, so Hendo might woop me into shape. He's usually pretty hard on me.
It's cool..I thought you were Daves son..I trained with your dad and uncle at the OTC in CO back in the summer of 88' when they were there...best 4 weeks of my life..I was 16..Your uncle sat in my corner at the state freestyle tourney the next year...add some more videos if you have them of mark too..thanks
that's freakin awesome dude. I'll be at the OTC in a little bit for the Schultz international. Yea, now that i'm older it would be so cool to train w/ him. So much knowledge was lost, ya know. We have tons of vids, i'm not very youtube savy though. I don't know how to get vhs onto a comp.
your pop was the nicest guy too...until you stepped on the mat with him..I really didn't get to spend a lot of time with him but the short time that I did was pretty awesome..
i'll never forget the first thing he said to me..he said "go up to Joe Seay(OSU's coach), and tell him, if they were gonna give the world an enema, they'd stick it in Stillwater!" and then he bumbed me a dip..
I would say you should make a compilation like your uncle has on here of all his best tilts, and chokes and laces...man he was such a technition..he really taught me a lot..
I believe walmart will burn your vhs to dvd..I would contact USA wrestling and tell them you'd like put them on youtube, they'll probably do it for you and pick up the tab too..the world needs to see your dad..it will keep him alive!!!
hey Xander, what kind of wrestling shoes did your dad wear??..I think they are some model of russian/asian asics..man I looked for years for them but never could find any..
he used to wear these split sole asics. They put a model out after he was killed like the ones he used to wear. They were called the Dave Schultz gold medals. They took the original split shoes off the market because they never broke down, so they couldn't see anymore shoes same with the Gold Medals. I know we have all his national opens at our house. And old man had alot of national opens.
I wrestled with both your dad and uncle many years ago...both of which were much older than me, but I based my style around thiers. He's is missed.. My wife and I went hunting for his grave in Ashland OR a few years ago. I wanted to leave him a can of cope and some flowers but we could find it..where is he buried??
Just wanted to say " I watched your dad when I was in Highschool. Awesome wrestler and a humble one at that!!!Saw him win the Canada Cup with little effort!! He's not forgotten!!

By the guy who did Capoti. It's focused on Mark more than my dad though.

The producer of Capoti is doing the movie. To my understanding though, it's going to focus more on duPont and my uncle Mark than my dad.

Where's the movie about this dude? Every wrestler in USA should know about him and what happened.
