Rush has progressed from a basement band into a superband, if u don't agree listen to 'Dreamline' 'EarthShine' and of course, 'Tom Sawyer'. Geddy Lee has improved into a musical genius.
@smithdsmit: Moving Pictures? Well, they will do the Same in 3 weeks in Germany, and I'll Be THERE!!!!! Yeah it's gonna Be my Second Concert in my Life

ELP the first 3-piece you remember clown? What about The Jimi Hendrix Experience? I hate these so called music authorities that spew nothingness. My take: killer guitar tone, killer guitar playing, killer singing, killer bass playing, a couple of great riff-songs, average drumming that didn't get in the way.
they only talked about the big songs, and how they sound like led zepplin. they dont sound anything like them. and there are great songs on there they didnt talk about.
ex Take a freind, Before and After, Here Again. its more then just Working man and In the mood. id give the album 4 stars.
At the time of the first record Rush played straight ahead rock, which was quite good. Of course, Fly by Night and later records were a surprise (a pleasant one) to those of us who caught them on the rise. But lots of fans in the 80s and later all too quickly dismiss the first record, which is unfortunate because it was highly energetic and their shows were inspired and great. So don't dismiss the first record simply because you weren't around then or because it didn't have Neil.
not sure who these dicks are that are such experts on Rush but their debut was pure rock and they continued that raw sound sporadically up until about 2112. Ha ha, some bald, Vertical Horizon looking 'artist/musician' plays Bangkok. Way to go on making a competently researched album 'review'.
LOL ! Sounded just like Led Zeppelin ! That dude is fucking high! It was thier first and rawest album and it kicked ass ! In many ways its better than anything after it.
Dont make it like it was a mistake cause the truth is, it was a fucking masterpiece and Alex's guitar sound and style had never sounded more agressive
@ToddSweeneyOnce I saw Rush about a month ago here in St Louis and it had been about ten years since I had seen them...It was awesome again, these 3 guys deliver the most entertaining live show. The so called "Rock and Roll" Hall of Fame is the hall of shame until they get these 3 musical artists to enter. How many bands can fill auditoriums 36 years after they released there first album?
@TonySkyRush Very few bands can do what Rush can. I mean in terms of drawing power and musically. As far as the "Hall of Fame", I don't know what's the bigger joke, the "Hall" or Rolling Stone's "Greatest of All Time" lists.
@1FleaBittenVarmint Yeah, they are talking about the first album and Working Man and then he plays Passage To Bankok...totally irrelevant I thought that was pretty obvious.
I loved this album. The reviewers on this video offered the take most hard rock fans had-- very very big Zeppelin influence. I wonder what their catalog would look like if Rutsey had not quit.
What fuckheads! They are so dumb rush is the best band in the world no fucking doubt and these stuck up pricks go and give the album 2 stars, I'm gonna kill them...... And how they say Canada like it's just us, so because were awesome you have to give us two stars? Wow
2 Stars is a freakin joke "Need some love" is a standout fun song "Finding my way" is a great song, "Working man" is a classic," In the mood is a classic" That song is played at a quarter to 8 all over the world. more like 4 stars considering its a "debut" album.
Early Rush is more appreciated in the States>Saw the 2112 tour ,I would love just to see the band do a 2112 tribute tour with the exact song choice from "Alls the worlds a stage" Now that rocked
ABSOLUTELY!!!! Highly Overlooked! That was their "first" dabble into the longer/progressive form of music that they would eventually become renowed for!!
It's kind of funny listening to all these Canadians talk about how this Canadian band was great. Give me a break!!! They couldn't even get airplay in Canada. ONly US radio stations played their music and US audiences loved them. Then they became known, and all the Canadians said 'Hey, they are Canadian. I remember...' You guys don't remember crap. You didn't even support them in the early years. Typical Canadians. American balls first made it possible, not Canadian pussies. So typical.
The number one US town to support them? San Antonio, Texas. Look on the back of All the World's a Stage album and read which radio stations and DJs they pay homage to.
i have been a fan since a kid & RUSH have never sounded like led zepplin!! they had a total sound of there own!! the only singer & band i think sounds a little like a mixture of led zepplin & geddy lee is lenny wolf of KINDOM COME from 1987 if anyone remembers them?? they were from germany!! started in the 80s & are still here today tourin europe!!
Three stars? What the fuck! That album deserves way more. If anything i think their first album is the best. It got a bit to opo for me after that. Although i did like Limelight.
this never sounded like Led Zeppelin, no matter what you read. it just seems like all 'heavy metal' bands needed a singer that can hit high notes....also where does this come from? is it on the DVD "Inside Rush: Music in Review 1974-1981"?????
I have never thought Rush sounded just like Led Zeppelin, like some people have said..and I've been listening to Rush since 1983-84. I think maybe guys like that Danger DJ are maybe just lazy and read somewhere that Rush's first album souned Led Zep-ish..I dont know.
Ok, it, um, sounds like led zeppelin. so? who gives a fuck? (excuse my language) Rush took basic hard rock music, ate it, let it sit in their stomach for a while, then regurgitated something SO MUCH BETTER.
Danger the DJ is an idiot. "It was OK. It sounded like Zepellin." I hate this comparison. Rush, the album, did not sound like Zep. It has its own unique sound and I love this album. Rutsey was perfect for this album. It was a good rock album. Before and After is my favorite.
I have this DVD. They're only acknowlegding Rush's body of work up to "Moving Pictures" and "Exit...Stage Left". "Signals" and beyond they won't acknowlegde for some reason. Maybe they don't like the keyboard on "Signals". I don't know! There's even one guy on this DVD that said had Rush gotten killed in a plane crash, their body of work would be better appreciated!
Sorry, I think "Snakes & Arrows" is an amazing album. To hell with these guys!
Common refrain from most reviewers of that era, which I think he is just repeating, because he looks like he would have been in grade school then...I have NEVER thought I heard LZ in that album...they said the same thing about Whitesnake also...that would be a little closer then Rush!
I know Donna Halper personally and when she discovered and played Rush for the first time on her radio station, there were multiple phone calls to the station asking "When did the new Led Zep album come out?" No shit!
What? What! Why did that guy play "A passage to Bangkok"? What's the relevance? Stick to songs from the album you're reviewing. People who don't know about Rush might get the impression that that was supposed to be the afforementioned riff from "Working Man". Misleading.
My guess is that is a Fly By Night tour video. I mght be wrong, but check out the shot of the drummer at about 6:20. Hard to tell but I think that's Peart. Sounds like him too. Rutsey was much more "clock like", especially live. Unfortunately I'm old enough to know.
These commentaters got it wrong the first Rush album is a great rock record that any band would be proud of. Alex plays the record like a rock god and as those songs were being worked up live you can hear how they rock. I love this album and next to "All the Worlds a Stage" it my favourite Rush album.
First they say that the album had rock songs because that's what Rush needed to do to gain popularity. No. False. That's just what they could write at the time.
Then they say that John Rutsey left the band because it "wasn't what he was looking for." No. False. He left because his diabetes prevented him from touring.
It's not uncommon for a band to play a song in concert before releasing it on an album - experimenting onstage is how Pink Floyd developed many of their albums, for instance.
@ArcherofStars73 I'm one of the most underated guitarists of all time also, unfortunately I say that about myself because I suck at guitar! Oh I thought it said over-rated MY BAD!
@Koetoezov Hi Koe. You know, I've been listening to Rush and their debut(obviously) for over 30 years and I never thought they sounded like Zep. I thought they sounded like no one else from the start. Maybe I'm the only one who feels that way, but it's true. And yeah, the debut is still my favorite, although I love Fly By Night. The differences between the first 2 records are amazing!
I gotta second the motion that they never sounded like anyone but themselves as far as I am concerned and I remember when that first one came out in 74.
If you look back on that year and take in the scope of music that came out you will see a who's who of rock.
Geddy does change the tone a lil, and yeah they arent as they used to be, but folks lets face it, they have been around for 34 years, and the guys are like in their mid 50s. Of course its gonna slow down a little and sound a little different.
No one can out run time, no matter how much money you have.
thats pretty stupid to say considering they tour on every album and theyve even said that they only record songs that they know they can play live, plus they have a shit load of live cds.
You misunderstood what I said. I know they still tour and have recent live albums, but they are more of a studio band now, in the sense that they just don't sound as good live as they used to.
It seems as though they are alittle less tight, they have changed the tone and feel of their older songs, and Geddy tends to change the melody of lyrics on the older songs, and imo his voice is not what used to be. I love the band, but they just don't seem to have what they had 20-30 years ago.
Sure it is. That is, if you're a fan of Rush it is really a must. The DVD has a booklet also with good comments to each track from Rush (1974) till Exit stage left.
wtf, all thats and then only 3 stars lol. stupid

oh ok,i understand you opinion now,i disagree with you thoughts on how there sound is not as good live as it used to be

It seems as though they are alittle less tight, they have changed the tone and feel of their older songs, and Geddy tends to change the melody of lyrics on the older songs, and imo his voice is not what used to be. I love the band, but they just don't seem to have what they had 20-30 years ago.

Rush is the tightest band in rock today. And keep getting tighter, when you listen to 2112 how could you say they are "a little less tight"?

Good post. Is this from the DVD titled Music in Review 1974-1981?

I was thinking of buying that DVD. Is it worth the money?

Sure it is. That is, if you're a fan of Rush it is really a must. The DVD has a booklet also with good comments to each track from Rush (1974) till Exit stage left.
