  • Looks nice as for design, but some of the animations make me feel confused so I wouldn't use this as my main interface, also some animations may seem to slow when you're rushing to do something, better for animations to be as fast as in mac os x (except for minimizing which is also slow in os x). Still a great work!

  • Interesting window manager that for sure

  • Multitasking with minimized windows was never a substitute for a good taskbar (or "home screen"). Win7's taskbar would be the best, even for Post-PC style tablets, if only grouped buttons switched as they were clicked (this was its fatal flaw).

That aside, this mockup was very well done.

  • Is it in design process or not?.

    Is there a beta test?

  • That looks like it would be more of a pain than anything else. But maybe that's because I'm tired of my computer constantly guessing what I'm going to do next and utterly throwing me off track.

    "Keep it simple, stupid."

  • Como se faz isso?

    how to install?

  • ubuntu is almost there!

  • COOOOOOOOL

  • Hope too see it in Gnome 3 too.

  • WoW!!!

    Gnome 3 FTW!!!

  • BEST GNOME 3!!

  • what window theme/decoration thingy is that. and is the launcher Gnome 3.0 native, or just something like gnome DO

  • I think some people forgot that Mono is 100% GPL and Microsoft put C# under Community Promise (so in legals C# does not belong to Microsoft, its property of everyone) so there is nothing wrong anymore with C#

Second. Only Tomboy, GNOME-Do, Banshee and F-Spot are written in C# and there are alternatives for every of this apps.

Btw. GNOME-Shell is written in C and JavaScript, nothing with C#/Mono

  • looking good wonder how much of this concept will actually be a reality, main thing I like and a reason I like gnome its how intuitive it is compaired to other desktop environments, this adds to that can't wait. (but hope they don't pull a kde 4.0 :p , if they need till april 2011, then do it)

  • yeah, awesome

  • What the hell happened to gnome? Using mono, shitty looking interface? I mean, really? I was never a fan of gnome, but a least it use to be a respectable desktop environment.

  • @Arkblu GNOME is written in mono? O_O

  • Some of it's newer applications use mono, such as tomboy. A few people have made C/C++ clones of these apps, but the Gnome project hasn't adopted them. This has caused a conflict between the Gnome project and the Gnu project, and the Gnome team is now deciding whether they are breaking away from Gnu, or not.

  • @Arkblu It's time to switch to KDE ...

  • @Arkblu They C forgotten? Otherwise, what meaning to write in C #

  • @Arkblu (and other who read that) I'm fairly sure there is nothing to worry about, some of the things said were fairly inaccurate, i.e. in making links to mono and the the who Gnome leaving Gnu thing, its more of a RMS hate thing. The day gnome is written in mono is they day the issues people have with it don't exist, after all it doesn't have any benefits doing so unless they plan to run Gnome on windows or something and I find mono applications unstable (by my experience) and recourse hungry.

  • From what I've heard, the decision to use mono was over certain features that were easier to implement with mono than with other languages.

Certain applications packaged with Gnome do, in fact, use mono. Tomboy and the new Gnome-Shell are prime examples. BTW, I've following this on Slashdot and the Gnome mailing-lists.

  • i do use gnome now, but with the advent of gnome-shell and the use of mutter over compiz in gnome 3.0, i will have to switch. probably to Xfce. gnome 3 - i do not dig it. and i do not like the gnome-shell either. it isn't clean and seems to slow work flow, when i am mutlitasking and managing windows/desktops.

  • Pretty clever design, but I still think tiling managers are better :)

  • I think it is ugly...

  • Also, it would not work well with > ~15 windows

  • This (mostly) removes the need for the window list metaphor, and saves space from the window list. But the automatic movement of the windows might make the system feel unpredictable. As for space, the top panel in the mockup is empty and could be used for the window list.

  • i don't think the top(menu bar) is a mock up, as it looks pretty much exactly like gnome 3, i've tried it out. only difference is the time/calender are in the center when you install gnome and gnome shell....

  • I use KDE... but I still think that is awesome!

    It's just a concept right? ._.

  • REALLY GREAT, much more efficient (in space and usability terms) than most GUI's =D

  • great concept! I would go beyond by reducing the top bar and combining the dock bar, open windows and desktops by your rollover layout on the top. I think about to make the video to demonstrate what I mean.

  • Are all the fancy window effects and compositing present in gnome shell by default or does this use additional plugins?

  • I can see some good points to it... but I seen better...

  • best ui EVER.

  • Excellent! Brilliant! Where to download and preview/test?

  • Good idea.

  • Awesome idea!

  • I just keep watching this video over and over, because this to me is so awesome. I truly hope this will be Gnome some day :)

  • How you can make this????? :)

    it's Gnome-shell??

Exist a tutorial or how to???

    bye

  • The best I've ever seen, it's a wonderful interface.

  • How did you do this video? Very nice mockup, and nicely done demonstration, i am hoping that someone would do something like this!

  • @meleeman90 I made it in blender and inkscape

  • @crantisz good job thanks :)

  • Get rid of the panels on the top and the bottom of the screen =/ what is the point of this if there is still a panel? You could just as well have put a nice taskbar on that panel...

  • Wow. That's rather interesting. Nice.

  • Huh? Most of this looks like stuff that's in KDE already (eg Kwins default "Slide Back" plugin)...

The drag to another desktop is nice tho.

  • This is genius!

  • great idea - love the way dragging a window nudges the other window titles! - Hope this makes it in to gnome

  • I am so confused

  • What's with all the people saying, "This is cool I'm dropping KDE for this"?

    1. This doesn't exist.

    2. It wouldn't exist without a major overhaul of the current system. Think 3.5 --> 4.0.

    3. With Gnome's philosophy, they wouldn't implement this for another 5 years...

  • You don't sound like a user of Linux let alone some who knows about the Linux Philo.

  • Then I suppose you don't know what Linux users sound like, considering I went to Gentoo after a while. ¬_¬

  • Really a nice mockup =). But I think the colors are far too gaudy at the moment.

  • It is awesome. I wanna test it

  • hard to believe that it ll become real but let 's wait. Your idea is cool, btw

  • Please pm me a tutorial on how to make the windows move so the titlebar remains visible, I tried tinkering around with the 'Window Rules' in compiz, but got nothin'. Plus, how do you make them minimize by just dragging? And last, how do you make different windows have different colored title bar?

Please, I'm beggin you mann! that is so genius!

  • you are a fricken genius my friend...

  • SUHWEEEET@

  • Simply stunning: different colors for different apps, smart behaviour when moving windows and optimized layout for a rational use of space. It's gonna be great, thank you guys!!!

  • Well, once again, it seems that GNOME is the way to go.

  • Holycr**!! If thats true, i`ll migrate from KDE to GNOME, FOR SURE!!!

  • So great!

  • Really wish this'd get implemented into Gnome.

  • I like the transitions. Some interesting ideas that show potential.

  • wow that's cool!

And is that really a mock-up? You could do that now couldn't you? The only thing that couldn't be done possibly is the drag and drop.

  • wow, impressive work. Can't wait to see this in real life. At least one of those effects is already in KWin, so I know it from my KDE Desktop

  • i really like it, the effects look fantastic! i dont like the window's looks but i gues with a little personalization it should look great too

  • I think it is a really nice brainstorm for Gnome. I hope somebody implement this.

  • This certainly seems like an intuitive window managing system, but it does also beg the question - how long would it take Gnome to achieve something like this with their, "incremental improvements" philosophy.

To change from the current shell to something like this would be like the difference between KDE 3 and KDE 4. If the Gnome guys play their cards right, they can avoid the uproar that appeared with KDE 4.0, though, and in honesty, the benefits of the KDE team's choice are showing.

  • My belief is that, though now it is still an excellent DE, for Gnome team to make a truly inspirational new system like this they would have to do what the KDE team has done: re-write most/all of it from scratch. This would give them a brand-new, clean codebase which would be easier and less intensive to execute then if they tried to mold the current window manager to this.

Of course, there's a chance that Compiz might be re-built from the core to allow such a window manager concept...

  • seems like its a phone os, maybe android, moblin??

  • its some sort of kde linux distro

  • Comment removed

  • Its not KDE... its a GNOME mockup...

But I use KDE 4.3 and it is very nice.

  • Awesome!!

  • I don't understand what most of your problems are! It's all about choice, if you like it, use it, if you don't, don't! At least there are people out there bothering to write this software, they aren't asking for your money, so why slate them?

My 1st post on Youtube. (felt necessary)

  • Lmao- first responce-nice one.

  • I dislike how the windows move when you change focus, you shouldn't have to move the mouse more.

  • Of course, this is just a mock-up: certain refinements could be made before this is implemented (if ever).

  • Lame hippie animation.

  • +1 for the lulz

  • mierda!!! eso era lo que estaba buscando... esos efectos son maravillosos!!!

  • Having used Compiz-Fusion, I can vouch that it is highly customizable. It can fit your taste or it can fit mine. I enjoy the cube but I don't like to deform it. Others prefer using spaces instead for a simpler switch, while yet others just use X's default virtual desktop manager. This mockup of gnome looks quite intriguing, and would be a good implementation for the standard user. Those like me who do more advanced work might not even use a graphic interface or use a manager like xmonad.

  • sin duda no hay comparacion :) excelente expreando con ansiasss para la actualizacion de mis sistem siii :)

  • wooooow increible mejor que el concepto de Gnome Shell

jajajajajaaja someone say: "windowsblint is better" jajajajaajjajaaj that's suck's!!

  • I think that it is TOO clever for my desktop. I do not need any WM that does something i didn't tell it to do.

This "usability", when the OS/WM/DE chooses what the user needs and what he doesn't - is just a piece of crap. Best usability is, for me - if i tell my PC to do something, it does. No freaking popups with questions, no idiotical unnecesary actions i didn't ask to do.

  • this would annoy the shit out of me, what if i want to put a window in the bottom left? all of this stuff would just get up my ass

  • it's not for your ass.

  • oh shut uo you know you would like it

  • nah, use windowblinds, its better

  • Comment removed

  • why is it a nightmare!? If you computer can handle it... *EHEM!*... Then it is great, literally any style you want. And DeskScapes from them is amazing, nothing can beat it, not even this amature bubbleshit

  • Comment removed

  • what?

  • this isnt windows at all noob.

    this is linux ...

  • it's not linux, it's a mock-up :-)

  • a *nix running a GNOME Mockup...

    imo...

  • Comment removed

  • I wish you linux guys would get together and patent this stuff and say as long as it stays in linux, or you're all paying royalties, it stays in linux.

  • Software patents are the antithesis of Free Software. It would no longer be Free.

  • grandiosa idea

  • WoW!

  • Very neat idea, all of that.. makes for a nicely clean and well organized desktop, that is cool.. might make me want to use Gnome if it actually happens ;)

  • Excelente idea para gnome

  • it's just brilliant ... they seem to be thinking and just when you need something the window does it for you :)))) cool

  • I love it.

  • I would love to see it implemented!

  • seems useless to me

  • de la balle sa va faire mal à certain...à bientot gnome3...;)

  • Compiz is lovely...the thing people sometimes forget about linux is you can customize it to your liking. Compiz is no different...don't need all the bells and whistles? Then turn em off. Want more bling?? Leave em on!! No one has to leave it completely off if they don't want to. Plus if you have problems, you can always reset your settings by just deleting a folder or two. Google/UbuntuForums is your friend(s)

  • Man, this is cool. When will this apply to Ubuntu?

  • Omg it's brainshtorm of Gnome 3.0

  • wow this is great!!!

  • damn cool! i wanna it as Gnome 3

much more better that gnome shell concept.

  • shiiiiit

  • Loved some things: very cool HIG, means all windows seems consistent. GNOME is much better than others. Maximize to show clock, etc. which some users may want on small screens. Colored theme on windows based on role, making them easy identifiable.

  • The downsides are: HIG is menu based. Many persons will prefer toolbar based. For a reason: not all know how to read. A child should click on an icon instead on a text. What if my machine is from China and have preinstalled Linux? I should be able to change the language clicking on a globe and searching for English, Spanish, etc.

  • Wow.

  • Seems to be useful.

  • pretty flashy

  • it's soo freakin' cool!

  • It looks great, the only real issue is usability. I know I would get impatient waiting through all those animations.

  • simply great.

  • mamma mia che cacata

  • Most of effects are in compiz/kde composite effects. The only thing I don't get is the way windows are using "smart layout" through this video.

  • OMG this is soo cool, I want it soo bad!

  • Holy crap. Me want it :D

  • Mi piace!

  • stunning!

  • Very cool. I like it. :)

  • I like it Gnome 3 could be better than KDE 4 ;).

  • OMFG! Can't stop watching it. Hope gnome 3.0 will have this by default, because currently gnome-shell is epic fail from the base design and will kill gnome.

  • lmao :D

  • Looks nice, but please, I implore you, please don't make gnome as awful as KDE4.

  • I love this so much.

  • Not bad, but I think that Compiz can do most of that on its own, and then install a Metacity theme and there you go.

  • compiz will never be standard like aero on windows

  • Kind of unfortunate for Compiz, since its installed by default on most modern Linux distributions, and enabled by default on a large part of those ;)

  • You're right about most people not leaving it on. I guess that the dozens of people who uploaded the many Compiz Fusion/Beryl videos to Youtube and the millions who have collectively watched them forgot to read your previous comment about people not leaving it on.

Unstable? Honestly I've never run into a single person complaining about it, except you. Not saying there aren't a few, but Compiz IMHO could replace its equivalent in OS X *today* without any problems whatsoever. Never had a problem

  • it can't replace anything if you actually do work in unix. my last workstation was up in a kde session for 150 days before i had to restart it by choice. compiz will never be that stable.

  • Volvos are crappy cars. My Lamborghini could hit 190 miles per hour, but my Volvo can't go over 110.

Also, its kind of sad the attempts you'll go to to keep your argument alive. I made it clear that I was referring to *LINUX* two days ago, and you didn't mention Unix then. So after you lost that argument you suddenly claim that you're using a different OS and give an unrealistic depiction of stability (150 days) that not many can prove/disprove. I like to update my Linux kernel, as do most!

  • sudo apt-get install intelligence

  • it was linux you twat. I actually do work in linux, not just piss around with stupid window decorations. compiz is a waste of time

  • Dear stubert311,

Thanks for making me laugh. While keeping a weak argument alive, bereft of logic is the sign of a weak (but determined) mind, resorting to blatant name-calling is just immature, pathetic and sad.

As is the unfounded assumption that all I do is "piss around with stupid window decorations." FYI, Compiz is a compositing window manager, much more than a mere window decorator. Please find an argument, I beg you! Stop embarrassing yourself. I'm starting to feel bad.

  • dear alcoholic12, thank for you this descent into banality. I've never argued with a person on youtube. you've made it all i thought it would be, and more.

  • More name-calling, I see? I thank you for proving my point. This 'debate' has now devolved into the intellectual equivalent of me hitting you with your own fist. And while I almost feel bad about it, I only continue because you won't acknowledge the fact that every one of your points was baseless, illogical, or an outright lie, and yet you keep typing.

I apologize for my medical condition, but I have a severe allergy to bullshit and it makes me lash out logically and truthfully.

  • why are you writting paragraphs to me?

  • Freud and I would argue that Compiz is just for showing off your id. ;)

I think you're referring to all of those people who have blinged out their cube in a glitter-filled orgy of animation and excess, and I agree that those people give Compiz a bad name.

There's nothing wrong with wanting your computing experience to be aesthetically pleasing, if done tastefully and not overdone.

  • I agree with you. But I can live without that, although I am really pleased, with Compiz. Is not a critical part of Linux. Just some makeup, which isn't bad at all. Just for showing off, and trying to convince people to use Linux.

  • You mentioned makeup. Yeah, makeup is critical for that all-important first date. The girl needs to present herself well so you'll take her out again. But you don't want her to put on too much makeup, or else she'll just look like a cheap whore. She only needs enough to highlight her natural beauty.

And yes I'm talking about Compiz and Linux. Sidenote: I need to meet more women, but that's neither here nor there ;)

  • Awesome! I can't wait until we have this functionality!

  • Compiz and some little bit work, :)

  • It look very nice cant wait to have it

i Hope No proplem with compiz fusion :D

  • Great ,looks good

  • nice

  • WoooooW, but i think that will not result in real :)

  • Can't wait to try it.

  • Looks very nice
