Was about to urge folks to look up Brady's solo (in a pub) version of Shamrock Shore, but it's been taken off...alas. He was younger than this, I think...
Took me 25 years! to find out who played this and "Ye Jacobites," etc., on an old reel tape my cousin sold me (25 tapes and a machine) in the late 1970s. I sold the shebang in the 1980s, and never could figure out who it was. iTunes solved that--buy 25 songs for $10 there. Awesome.
So glad to stumble upon this version of such a lovely song. And delighted to hear Paul Brady singing this lead! I have a wonderful DVD of his music, current and older, He was quite young then when he sang with the Johnstons. (You might want to add a tag for Paul Brady to your list.) THANKS for posting this!
Feckin' wonderful - a great English song alright - but I suppose Paul Brady got it through an Ulster filter - the likes of Paddy Tunney. Thanks for posting up the precious artefact that it is.
The words are included in my info, pwg357 I am sorry to disillusion you but this song I have wrongly described as Irish, it is in fact an English folk song, still, the Irish group improved upon it.
I don`t believe any group were "ripped off", the old songs were lying dormant and along came the various groups to add their own interpretation of the songs.
Lomarca I have an LP of the Johnstons and also an LP compilation with the group singing three songs, my CD of The Johnstons contains 25 songs from two CDs, thanks for the comment.
Very fine recording. Shows how accomplished Paul Brady was, even in his early days.
The Johnstons did make a fair few recordings, something like three albums and some singles. I have their version of "Fhir A' Bháta" on a compilation CD called Transatlantic Ticket.
they are good yes but I still prefer the version from Merry Mischeif. A true carefree and loving duo.

It's great to hear them again. I can't get over how good their harmonies were.

This is the best version of this song I have ever heard., The Irish Descendants (a band from Newfoundland, Canada, also do a fine job with this song)

Aye best shit ever in a storm of thunder and lighting.
Best words to chant at Boudicca when the sky is restless and her spear is like wild and free fireworks streaking across the sky of our mind itself.
Aye straight druid blood am I.

What is it about this song?
There is something almost supernatural about it.
Like the druids of old are returning to us in a dream to speak in riddles.
Hahaha
I have fallen into the rabbit hole and don't want out.

One of the best of the Irish goups of the sixties. The didn't stay together too long before they went their own way. Great to hear them again.

pwg357, they were a great group as good as any that came on the scene in the 1960S-70S.

No, not me, more, they would have departed the scene much earlier, had I joined in.
