  • Great karate. Great music :P

  • He is fantastic

  • Karate for life!!!

  • This isn't a kata, but surely this is the "I-form". Although today's I-form is a little bit different. Firstly the blocks. Today's blocks initiate with the fist of the blocking arm coming down, from the cheek. And secondly the turns: Today's turns initiate with the rear leg crossing behind the lead and then you pivot the torso. Other than those two differences nothing else has changed.

  • @Tfliprex It's called Heian Shodan and it is a kata.

  • Funakoshi had higher stances. Possibly due to the fact he wasn't tall himself. Nowadays SKA stances are much lower.

  • one thing i find odd is the video is missed up just at the face level, that smells alittle fishy to me.

  • luckily a log didn't go floating down the river up top side... otherwise his karate days would have been over.

  • FARCE- In no way shape or form is this Gichin Funikoshi. Footage is too new and enhanced to look old, besides, this is not the style he taught at all. As a long time student of Tsutomo Ohshima I will verify that. What person would try to create such a farce and for what stupid reason?

  • why he is gonna hit you

  • Go go go, old man, - hit the floor.... :)

  • Gichin Funakoshi spent 3 years to learn Tekki shodan, nidan and sandan katas.

  • I'm savin this to favorites , this video is rare

  • japanese martial arts JUST SUCK. LOOK AT THOSE "WOODY" MOVEMENTS! IT'S EMBARASSING!

  • @doddoso woody movements? who taught u that word? your master? bro.......... if your master sucks, then what does that make u bro

  • @52canada yes yes u know what I mean. wooden, like wood, like a tree which is not flexible at all. got it now? (my english can be improved, but my knowledge of martial arts remains. watch shaolin monk: THOSE are fast, strong AND relaxed movements)

  • @doddoso woody movements? ok what style you do tough guy ? you do know that gichin funakoshi combines shorin ryu and shorei ryu to create shotokan right ? yeah it took 2 styles from okinawa to create shotokan and shotokan was born in Japan , its a good Japanese martial art

  • @TheShotokankarateguy yes, wooden. I'm not tough, but if you see my channel I have a video that may show how I know martial arts energy etc. I had my hand stomped by a 110kg man, then I played guitar. (you can make fake with thin bricks etc, but a big man on your hand is a big man on your hand).

  • @doddoso ....what are you racist?

  • @pokemonfanrock1 dude, you're in the wrong video, wrong channel and maybe wrong SITE.

  • What music is put here on this video? Please help anyone?

  • What is the music in the back ground?

  • Please note that the person doing the Heain kata is wearing glasses. I have not seen a photo of Gichin Funakoshi wearing glasses.

  • Definitely not Gichin Funakoshi. I am assuming this was taken from a video copy of the original film. For this footage to be correct it would have to be shot circa 1890-1905. The quality of this film is to high for this. This is also beforeFunakoshi went to Japan and before his son Gigo introduced the deep forward and horse stances which are predominant in this footage.

  • I'm sorry to say, but I do not think that there was television in Japan before the prototype in 1926, Unless this was invented and recorded by someone other then Kenjiro Takayanagi(which I doubt). By the quality, I speculate, this was recorded at least in the late 1930's and even could be as later as even the 1950's. Probably not Gichin Funakoshi. It would have been more widely known if he himself had recorded these.

  • @Gwisss I suppose in theory it could have been Ginchin Funakoshi's son, Gigou...?

    I won't even speculate though.

  • @MeanEyedCats Well, it could be possible that this was recorded with film before they had the technology to make it widely viewable. I don't know. I'm just being skeptical. It is supposed "award winning" footage, and I've seen many authentications of the footage being him.

I'm leaning more towards: It may be him, it may not. Either way, this is historical footage.

  • somebody tell me, what is the name of this old school techno song? amazing sounds :D

  • @sebastiansongo I agree but still I dont know the title of the song here

  • @sebastiansongo I found it finally my friend! This song is called VISITORS perfomed by italian synth pop band KOTO.

  • lol weird music choice.... i met shihon... :) 3rd generation

  • Music totally doesn't go with the footage, but I love it lol

  • I'd be embarrassed to show the last guy doing Shodan to my students, that is if I thought for one second he was Funakoshi..lol

  • that kata at the end is called haidan shodan...........is thats how u spell it

  • they spell it heian shodan

  • Heian Shodan is how Itosu named it. It's said by most people that it is Itosu the father of modern Karate. But I don't have knowledge to agree or disagree.

  • Looks like Funakoshi performing Tekki, but someone else doing Heian Shodan...maybe Obata, judging by height and build....

  • I agree with Winterdenni. this video looks like a fake. there appears be quite a few fake videos of Funakoshi sensei knocking around you tube.

  • There is a marked difference between the two movie parts.

The first part (until 0:29) might be authentic.

The Tekki Shodan is done very well and it obviously doesn't contain any Kōkutsu-dachi, only Kiba-dachi.

  • hi,

first thanks for your reply, sorry for the slow reply. Personnally i don't have any footage or pics of funkoshi shihan from that period so i can't say for sure, however i do have a modern reprint of 'ryukyu karate kempo', (first edition 1926) it contains no photos of the kata but hand drawings together with text, authored by funakoshi. the main differences that i can determine are the width of keba-dachi and the lack of stamping after the step.

  • the book is available from the JKF/champ web site if you want to obtain a copy for yourself.

ps. the name 'ないはんち' is used for the kata not 'てっき' (naihanchi/tekki)

  • It a pity that this footage is neither of Funakoshi, nor is it from the 20s.

It's especially obvious, considering that Kokutsudachi as it is shown here wasn't introduced to Shotokan untill the 30s by Gigo Funakoshi.

  • ahhhh Im glad our shotokan more evolved! That looks ugly. But hey, it's where we come from ...lol.

  • so stiff

  • Is Tekki SHodan and Heian shodan!

  • stupid techno music

  • @soparamens do you know the title of this song?

  • l'art du karaté a l'état pur

  • That Heian Shodan was great, as well as that Naihanchin

  • anyway the traditional karate rocks and i think anything we know from funakoshi is great for our mind and spirit.. Tekki Shodan is one of my favourite kata, i often do it in competitions.. :x

  • Rest in Peace Gichin Funakoshi.

  • il migliore di tutti

  • The first kata was naihanchi shodan...

  • Tekki Shodan

  • Naihanchi = Tekki

  • who is the asshole who shined the shoes?

  • Wow lightning speed!!!!! I practice Shotokan and can not do kata half as fast.

  • Has Tekki Shodan changed from the way it was taught in former times?, because when master Funakoshi comes to the first Kiai his right hand goes back to his hip to make an enpi but i think in nowerdays you make a (in kata slow) block with your hand.

    Thanks for helping

(excuse me for my bad english)

  • yes..i guess so..the shtokan today..it after the JKA..so Nakayama changes the kata practises

  • I'm amazed at how rigid his Kata is. Today we're taught about the flow of the Kata, keeping low and centred but it wasn't like that at all. His Gidan burai often didn't even go low enough. It's all changed so much i just wonder how much of it we've lost

  • What music is this?

  • I noticed the same thing. Also, his Zenkutsu-dachi is almost as if he was standing normally. Probably, this video is pre-shotokan. I know that he made many changes when he created his own style, like changing some kata's names, moves, etc. That must be the reason of the differences.

  • In truth, Gichin Funakoshi changed little things from Shurite: he kept the Zenkutsu as it used to be, he changed the Shiko-Dachi into the Kiba-Dachi, and changed two or three techniques.

It was his son, who was physically handicaped, who made all the changes that made what Shotokan looks like today. He couldn't do the Shurite Znkutsu, so he made it a low position, etc...

Common Shotokan today doens't look anymore like what G.Funakoshi created in the first time.

  • I think you're mistaken with regards to Y. Funakoshi being handicapped and making changes to the kata. He had tuberculosis but was not physically handicapped. In fact, he was a very strong, athletic man and would often subtly change kata to make them more physically demanding. He is responsible for a lot of how shotokan looks today, but that is because shotokan is a physically demanding style the way that he liked it!

  • Must be a move that changed some time ago!

  • In the end of Heian shodan in this clip, when the presentor got to the second KIAI, he does Kokutsu dachi instead of Zenkutsu dachi. Why??

  • I noticed the same thing. Also, his Zenkutsu-dachi is almost as if he was standing normally. Probably, this video is pre-shotokan. I know that he made many changes when he created his own style, like changing some kata's names, moves, etc. That must be the reason of the differences.

  • I also hv the same question of ItayKenny.. Why he went into Kokutsu for a Tsuki??

  • he didnt notice his stance were off..he thought he;s king of the world.

  • Senior Egami

  • Is that Egami Sensei for sure?? I have seen some Shotokai videos of Egami Sensei.. He is much diferent than Shotokan and flowing... But, the person here is so rigid.. May be this is before he founded Shotokai..

  • ...this is funakoshi and this is how shotokan karate is

  • Tekki is from Funakoshi, but Heian is not Funakoshi

Aoki Class of Karate

  • This Heian shodan performance doesn't look like it is Gichin Funakoshi. Anybody know who it is?

  • tekki shodan and heian shodan by Master Funakoshi himself: amazing !!!!

  • That is tekki shoudan and heyan shoudan, but they don`t look the way we do it in Shotokan today.

    Interesting...

  • The first one seems tekki shodan isnt it

  • U a Kyokushin or a Goju boy Josh? Pinan sono ni is what Kyokushin calls it, i also think it gets called Pinan Nidan in both Goju and some Kyokushin dojo.

  • I dont think Goju practice Pinan.. It's Shuri-te kata and practiced in Shorin.. It came to Shito Ryu, Shotokan throught Shuri te :) Thnks

  • Good ol' Pinan Neidan
