You would be hesitant to put 3.5 pounds on a motorcycle or a jeep? Dude your a woman. You need to seriously toughen up lanky, if you plan on surviving in any adverse conditions, 3.5 pounds compared to 1.5 means absolutely shit.
Wow you are a fucking idiot!!! First of all Spetsnaz is Russian not German. And really? you think you need a pick only when digging an underground shelter?! LOL and you think a leather sheath is useless? You are the biggest fucking joke on youtube, you dont know shit, what do you need shovels for anyway? For a bug out bag? If thats the case you wont survive for a long time... Your knowledge on things are...
Also, my shitty $5 folding shovel has the problem with the blade being loose when I'm digging, but if you move around the blade while you're tightening it, you can get it much more snug.
By the way, I got my folding shovel out of a $15 car emergency kit and it works just as good as this $40+ gerber shovel... Not to mention it's 100% steel so it's strong enough to handle shoveling about 10ft² of hard-packed dirt during a Canadian winter (at least a Southern Ontario winter)
I have the German folding shovel and I've found it extremely reliable. There have been times where that pick has been the only thing that would cut through the clay. Sure, it's about one and a half pounds heavier than the modern cold steel shovel, but it is definitely a proven design.
that cold steel looks like the best option out of the 3. you could even use it as a rabbit stick if you needed. as for me i would probably just get a cheap garden trowel.
as for the spaznet shovel: it's based off of the WWII German Nazi SS "field spaten". after WWII, the russians threw away their bayonetts, and adopted German gear because the Germans were kicking the russians' asses with it!!
In short; the spetznaz e-tool is a masterpiece.
don't use an S rank melee weapon as a scapegoat for your own ignorance.
@zeldagamerDX6 To be fair, the folding shovel didn't kick the Russians' asses... In fact, I remember the Russians kicking the Germans' asses, rather than vise-versa...
The Russians probably adopted the design for the folding shovel since it's a great, useful, lightweight, and versatile tool.
and about the gerber: did you oil it? it won't fasten as tight if there is too much friction!! did you make sure it was sharp? if it is not sharp, then it will break the shovel! once again, you have to maintain and take care of your tools!!! it's beyond me how someone like you who is old enough to know better, can possibly think that you can abuse your tools and whine over the internet when they break. especially when the damage is your fault on account of lack of prudence on your part.
first of all: three (3) pounds (lbs) is nothing. don't complain over nothing.
second of all: don't ever think for one second that good quality equipment will ever compensate for incompetence on the user's part.
3rd of all: don't tell me you actually expect your tools to last long without having to maintain them? yes! you have to maintain your tools!! metal tools with moving parts need oiling and maintainence! blades need sharpening!! you have to maintain your tools!!!!

I pick is very important! Most dirt has stones and rocks in it that needs to be broken up. Clay is hard as cement went it is very dry a pick will do the job when a shovel will not!
@Boatdrunker That's true, though I doubt I'll be digging fox holes with a mini shovel. It's more for fire pits, burying excrement among other things, digging up plants, digging out a vehicle that's stuck, etc.
@envirosponsible I disagree... I've used it to dig a pit for my shelter before, it just takes a long ass time and my back hurt so much that it felt like I was using my spine as the shovel...
You need a pick in most areas because you are going to encounter rocks. I use a German folding shovel that uses a threaded lock like the gerber, and has a lighter pick than the one you have. The cold steel shovel seems just like a sawed off shovel, nothing special. Shovels are meant for digging, axes are made for chopping. They don't do well at the jobs they weren't intended for.
Your review took a lot longer than needed, you almost lost my attention.

@bigskip2121 i'm all for right tool for the right job...but a tool can be designed to exceed it's primary function successfully, though there definitely is a fine line between that and "gimmicky". These things are pretty much shovels and does everything a hand shovel can do....and a little more
@bigskip2121 This is not an example of that at all. What these tools are, are multi function. So it's not a shovel, it's a tool thats primarily a shovel with other functions built in to the design. The people you're talking about use flat head screw drivers to turn phillips head screws.
I have that German shovel it was used in Vietnam and they may be heavy but it's worth it and as for the play in the mechanism all u have to do is tighten the screw next to the locking pin I love this shovel it's army surplus so it's bound to be strong the weight helps when using the pick
I guess the German shovel's weight may be good if you want to use it as a weapon... That pick could probably do major damage to someone's face if you wanted.
"When would I want a pick?" I have the same German shovel and thought the same thing before moving to California. The ground here is extremely hard in many areas and using only a shovel can be a pain. Digging a cathole while wilderness camping can be tricky.
However, I still don't carry the German shovel because of the weight. I use an Ames 17in shovel. Only cost $10 at HD, weighs 1.75 pounds, and has a D-handle, which I find more ergonomic than a straight handle. Never failed me in 5 years.
Let me get this right. You said the Gerber had quite a weight penalty at 1 and 3/4lb. Then you go and say the Cold Steel shovel is comparatively light at over 2 pounds. Also, the German shovel is a military shovel. They have to carry it around in their sacks, and you're worried about putting it in a Jeep?
What exactly do u have in your bug out bag and do u have a bad back?I know weight is always an issue but ur talking about e-tools and1 3/4 aint that much for a folding shovel. The gerber u got is their cheap one.Their good folding etool is nato issue and is made by FRISKARS with a cost of $40 or so.Your bug out bag is a ziplock with 2 rubber bands and some plastic utensils.hahaha just kiddin.Real men carry folding e-tools or entrenching tools and next time buy the best that u can afford.
if you are watching pounds, and want something that folds, find a generic tri-fold shovel. I got mine from Rothco and it is solid and digs great. thanks for the vid.
2lbs in a vehicle isn't a deal breaker. especially when you consider everything else in the vehicle. I do agree about folding shovels with the screw thing. They suck. I've had I don't know how many of those. Only one I had worth a damn was a military surplus 1 from WW2 or viet nam or something. The other ones I had my neighbor weld steel pipes on for handles, and weld them open for keeps. Talk about heavy! haha.
dude you are such a pussy....really crying about a few pounds...u fucking suck...i hump my ruck with 40 pounds of shit all day, and my 30 pound aid bag...people like you make me sick
@PureSMOOTH1 70lbs?!?!?! who you calling pussy mate thats not heavy at all. once you add up all your gear (sleepin bag, basha, knife) every ounce of helps. this guys right. as for the spade in the truck being too heavy i dont know, can only assume for petrol consumtion or something
that pick is awesome..I can't tell tell you how many fox holes I've dug with a military shovel and having that pick to break through the top soil..especially in colder situations would be fantastic.
what do you expect from any chinese company. gerber blows. i have no experience with the cs entrenching tool. I love the glock entrenching tool. by the way, when would you want to use a pick? when you want to use a f*cking entrenching tool.
@envirosponsible You are aware that the Spetsnaz still make up the elite of the Russian Federation's military, right? It wasn't abolished when the USSR collapsed.
Often times ive found that usualy the Heaviest of equipment is somtimes the most effective....
people always talk shit about heavy stuff on youtube, its really anoying.....
With heavy equipment comes Durability reliability...... look at weapons like the.. Barrett 50cal, or the MG-42 ... all really heavy, but some of the most effective reliable weapons ever made...
so i say to this.. people talking shit about "too heavy". Get some muscle or somthing and be a man......
@Howie262 I agree, look at an axe if it was light it would lose most of its effectivness... and in the special forces i hear they are taught to use their shovels, so a heavy head would be an advantage...
i got it a couple of mounths ago and its amazing, i dont know what this guy is saying "Too heavy". Shure its Robust..... but thats what you want in a shovel, if you start getting much lighter you're gunnna have a thin piece of sheet metal like on the Gerber that broke on me.......
ive been using the German shovel for chipping off ice and the weight and robustness is outstanding.
i bought one of those a year ago on amazon.com, it was great untill i used it to axe away frozen snow on our stairs.....
the blade completely broke from the shaft, and i soon examined it and it shouldnn't have been a suprise though....... because the metal that should have been the thickest was actualy the thinest....after examination it i shouldnt have been suprised at all why the blade broke from the shaft and handle.
OH MY GOSH! you go on and on and on and on and on, repeating yourself over and over. That was one of the most boring videos ever! here, i'm just going to sum up everything that should have been said. the Gorge isn't very good. It's heavy, built bad, with a bad pouch. Now look at this German folding shovel, a little better, but a lot heavier. Don't buy it. I like the Cold Steel Special Forces shovel. works good, and the handle hasn't broken. The end.
I find that a little bit of weight on an e-tool tends to help in using it. My dad used to have a British army issue (he wasn't army but he did help a mate of his get officer so he got left it in his will) and it's still my favourite to this day...
you can also buy non gerber brand shovels with picks like that from most surplus stores for half the price.... just to kick it in the teeth while its down that is
The weight penalty of a lil pick is not a penalty with what you can do with it when you need it. Just thought i'd say that. If you dont need it, then just get another one. But for its purpose and application i'm sure it served or serves its purpose well. Especially since you dont need a separate tool that does the picking.
I used the similar shovel to the German one and its great for cold ground. When you work you are not cold since your blood is pumping. We had a screw there to secure the head in place and it was a bit hard when all over in mud but still good for digging. The one-piece SpetsNaz thing is better for fighting since its lighter, you tire less, easier to make with soft ground is on ok tool but worse when ground is cold and frozen.
I think you disassembling the gerber to remove and then replace the hammering part made it develop that slop, regardless you're right it shouldn't do that. I'm sorry but picks are an IMMENSELY useful combination to have with a shovel, rocky areas, roots. They are totally different tools needed for different things, but in combination they work awesome. I don't know how much experience you've had digging.
@mattamiller I totally agree with you, let's say you had to climb a ledge of... oh maybe 10 feet made out of dirt. The shovel won't do you very much good, but the pick sure as hell will, you can make footholds! Throw a rope up to help you, SHAZAM! Up the ledge/ cliff
I've never used a Gerber product that proved satisfactory. Their knife blade steel is way too light and soft for any serious tactical usage. I agree with your assessment on the e-tool as well. Mine made one trip on training ops. Straight to the Salvation Army with it.
I own one of those german shovels. Old design, bought second hand from an army retail (I live in switzerland). This shovel can seriously take a beating. I've used it to hack through wood, pick cement-like dirt, pretty much anything you want. it takes on anything. but yeah it's heavy
@walatalalaw I also own one of those german shovels except mine has a flat head screw cap on the end and requires a screwdriver in the field just to adjust the shovel.
who the hell judges a shovel on its usefulness as a throwing weapon? last time i checked you dig holes with shovels. if it really comes down to you throwing your shovel, you've fucked up somewhere along the line.
The German entrenching tool is design for hardcore use in COMBAT! Out of the tools he "reveiwed" the German one is the only one I would use for survival. Like one previous poster stated, "The fact that you don't know why the pick is a good feature tells me that you have not done this sort of thing before." is true. And the weight is nothing, especially when you are using the pick to punch through the helmet of a enemy soldier.(which was one design consideration for the pick)
That German shovel is an entrenching tool. Try digging a shell scrape, then expand it to a slit trench with overhead cover using it, and then with the cold steel shovel, in "soil", not "sand", then come back and tell us which did the better job. The fact that you don't know why the pick is a good feature tells me that you have not done this sort of thing before.
Well I am aware of the fact that this is for a survival kit... but, i must say that the spetsnaz E-Tool is too heavy.... I hope you realize that the E-Tool is used as a weapon... Thats why its heavy, plus if you think some Russian Soldier is going to whine about weight your crazy.
nice review. I have used the German and the Cold Steel. I like them both but the German is heaver, but the pick is nice when having to smash through hard pan to dig out a cat hole. Still the Cold Steel gets my vote at the better of the two
I am not an uber ultralight nazi but I understand that the German shovel is a little heavy, but to suggest that it is too heavy for a vehicle , that really caught me off guard and strike me a a tad ridiculous.
I have the East German shovel and you really have to pick through them to find one that works smoothly, mine is smooth of course. I also have the Cold Steel model which I would prefer to carry over the East German but both tools are not for pack carry. I do like an metal trowel for backpacking to dig cat holes.
Hi man the ww2 german infantry shovel is the best thing you'll find the ss use to sharpen the edges of the shovel to use as a close quarter battle weapon (trench warfare) because the russians took burlin they stole the shovel idea they also found the designs for the ak47 now kt34 there kit was light years infront of anything we had good video thanks michael in the U.K.
No offense intended on alot of you but it seems alot of preparers are pusses.... I would rather haul a heavy bag that I know contains quality gear than light weight garbage...If you can't ruck 80 lbs on a 5 mile hike you better start beefin up!......Like said, no offense intended on the hadicapped or less privledged....If you are wanting to be prepared....get in shape!
@FlatheadSteve your so right, at 18-24 i could run a 5min mile at 51 its a lot tuffer don't get old like the rest of us did, LIGHT IS FAST, BUT HEAVY IS COMFORTABLE, your right i still favour heavy 47lbs no weapons or ammo to carry any more. be safe M.S. in the U.K.
I would not complain so much about the pick. Try digging hard clay or what is called Moaine, Even a motorized back hoe has problems. You need to break it up with a pick first.
If you want a shovel that will impress you . Try a YT search for " chinese military shovel" model WJQ-308.
This is not a cheap Chinese knock off.
This is like the muti-tool, Khukri, Axe, and machete of the folding shovel world.
have you messed around with the current us military E-tool? its not light but does fold up rather compactly and ive personally dug foxholes and hastys numerous times with it.
@envirosponsible im not sure if you have tried out the current US e-tool by now but just a heads up there are two different designs. the main difference is the design of the handle. i think the shovel blade is slightly different as well. good hunting
@TheGame1842 honestly in my 8 years in the infantry i have never had the need to do that. not even in iraq. i have had to dig many hasties and more foxholes than i can remember.
PIcks come in VERY handy when you are attempting to dig in hard or compacted soil, or soil with a lot of rocks. The pick allows you to break up the soil enough to allow the spade to shovel the soil out.
You take too long to get to the point 2 minutes in you finally tell us is is the play in the model. How much did you pay for the gerber? It is a $20 item...
well the german shovel and spetznaz shovel we also used as weapons and throw the sharp or jagged egdes at at a target it is fatal thats why its heavy and the pick can be used to detcet mines and entrench
@envirosponsible Yes, it is genius to throw your CQ backup at someone. Probably less than a 50% chance of getting a hit, pot luck if the range is changing. But you never know... Detecting mines with a spike that large sounds game too, I would be worried about the pressure needed to drive such a large cross-section into the ground and the chance of that setting off a mine, not that I know much about mines. Ill leave the shovel fighting to other people, computer games are fighting enough for me.
@envirosponsible he he he .....what goes peck...peck.....BANG !.......a russian in a minefield ! roflmfao.....wipes away tears ....i always thought it was chickens in the minefield that did that,
but i suppose budget cuts and the people surplus in russia ..
good vid bud but wepref comment is one of the funniest i've ever seen .
about the german folding shovel, i have been whaling on it for a long time and the weight is definatly made up by use of it, also in a long term survival sutuation, you can use the pick/hoe to turn the ground for a garden.
@envirosponsible grate toronto area georgetown ontario its its near milton acton guelgh and brampton hamilton oakville burlington a small town sorounded by city
Great review! I have a US army surplus one in my truck, same basic design as the German one but has the plastic nut like the Gerber. I bought mine as 'research' for a zombie novel and it is good in self-defense. I've only used it to dig my truck out of a snowdrift, where it worked very well.
I like your perspective on preparedness as a Canadian; the US tends towards gun preparedness more than might be necessary. A zombie apocalypse is only slightly likely, imho. One chance in three? ;-)
Nice review.......and for a bit of leisure add a tennis or squash ball to the fixed handled shovel for a round of bat & ball (I jest) :-)) Have similar to your German one although my handle folds, not too bad. Recently acquired a pocket stainless steel, fold handle mini trowel shovel . For it's size and weight it's great as an on your body tool. Will upload some info' about both soon.
I've had the CS shovel for a couple of years now, and actually bought 2 more of them. This is one amazing tool! I chop w/ it, throw it, dig with it, and even used my spare one as a frying pan for burgers once.

I guess the German shovel's weight may be good if you want to use it as a weapon... That pick could probably do major damage to someone's face if you wanted.

Picks are good for the central texas area as we have as much rock as we do dirt.

The spetsnaz cold steel is also the best choice to me. I mean it can double as an axe if or knife, that's handy.
Itachopper 11 months ago
"When would I want a pick?" I have the same German shovel and thought the same thing before moving to California. The ground here is extremely hard in many areas and using only a shovel can be a pain. Digging a cathole while wilderness camping can be tricky.
However, I still don't carry the German shovel because of the weight. I use an Ames 17in shovel. Only cost $10 at HD, weighs 1.75 pounds, and has a D-handle, which I find more ergonomic than a straight handle. Never failed me in 5 years.
Rich31182 11 months ago
Let me get this right. You said the Gerber had quite a weight penalty at 1 and 3/4lb. Then you go and say the Cold Steel shovel is comparatively light at over 2 pounds. Also, the German shovel is a military shovel. They have to carry it around in their sacks, and you're worried about putting it in a Jeep?
Moptop69 11 months ago
What exactly do u have in your bug out bag and do u have a bad back?I know weight is always an issue but ur talking about e-tools and1 3/4 aint that much for a folding shovel. The gerber u got is their cheap one.Their good folding etool is nato issue and is made by FRISKARS with a cost of $40 or so.Your bug out bag is a ziplock with 2 rubber bands and some plastic utensils.hahaha just kiddin.Real men carry folding e-tools or entrenching tools and next time buy the best that u can afford.

Talk about heavy! haha.

Howie262 1 year ago 4
@Howie262 I agree, look at an axe if it was light it would lose most of its effectivness... and in the special forces i hear they are taught to use their shovels, so a heavy head would be an advantage...
NocturnalBreather 1 year ago
GET THE GERMAN SHOVEL!!!!
i got it a couple of mounths ago and its amazing, i dont know what this guy is saying "Too heavy". Shure its Robust..... but thats what you want in a shovel, if you start getting much lighter you're gunnna have a thin piece of sheet metal like on the Gerber that broke on me.......
ive been using the German shovel for chipping off ice and the weight and robustness is outstanding.
Howie262 1 year ago
DO NOT USE THE GERBER SHOVEL AS AN AXE!!!!!!
i bought one of those a year ago on amazon.com, it was great untill i used it to axe away frozen snow on our stairs.....
the blade completely broke from the shaft, and i soon examined it and it shouldnn't have been a suprise though....... because the metal that should have been the thickest was actualy the thinest....after examination it i shouldnt have been suprised at all why the blade broke from the shaft and handle.
Howie262 1 year ago
"Im not gonna beat them up on their military shovel..."
Hence "MILITARY" its used for killing people, digging trenches.. they dont mind 3 pounds its considered a weapon too

OH MY GOSH! you go on and on and on and on and on, repeating yourself over and over.

ArgentSanguine 1 year ago
It's easier to break hard ground with the pick and then use the shovel side. Haven't you ever planted anything before?
soulfly7112000 1 year ago
you can also buy non gerber brand shovels with picks like that from most surplus stores for half the price.... just to kick it in the teeth while its down that is
Taud 1 year ago
The weight penalty of a lil pick is not a penalty with what you can do with it when you need it. Just thought i'd say that. If you dont need it, then just get another one. But for its purpose and application i'm sure it served or serves its purpose well. Especially since you dont need a separate tool that does the picking.
whannes 1 year ago
I used the similar shovel to the German one and its great for cold ground. When you work you are not cold since your blood is pumping. We had a screw there to secure the head in place and it was a bit hard when all over in mud but still good for digging. The one-piece SpetsNaz thing is better for fighting since its lighter, you tire less, easier to make with soft ground is on ok tool but worse when ground is cold and frozen.
Spetsnazovets 1 year ago
I think you disassembling the gerber to remove and then replace the hammering part made it develop that slop, regardless you're right it shouldn't do that. I'm sorry but picks are an IMMENSELY useful combination to have with a shovel, rocky areas, roots. They are totally different tools needed for different things, but in combination they work awesome. I don't know how much experience you've had digging.
mattamiller 1 year ago

I've used it to hack through wood, pick cement-like dirt, pretty much anything you want. it takes on anything. but yeah it's heavy

batmanrules1014 1 year ago
The German entrenching tool is design for hardcore use in COMBAT! Out of the tools he "reveiwed" the German one is the only one I would use for survival. Like one previous poster stated, "The fact that you don't know why the pick is a good feature tells me that you have not done this sort of thing before." is true. And the weight is nothing, especially when you are using the pick to punch through the helmet of a enemy soldier.(which was one design consideration for the pick)
bboralmale 1 year ago
That German shovel is an entrenching tool. Try digging a shell scrape, then expand it to a slit trench with overhead cover using it, and then with the cold steel shovel, in "soil", not "sand", then come back and tell us which did the better job. The fact that you don't know why the pick is a good feature tells me that you have not done this sort of thing before.

THEGRAPPL3R1 1 year ago 37
nice review. I have used the German and the Cold Steel. I like them both but the German is heaver, but the pick is nice when having to smash through hard pan to dig out a cat hole. Still the Cold Steel gets my vote at the better of the two
I am not an uber ultralight nazi but I understand that the German shovel is a little heavy, but to suggest that it is too heavy for a vehicle , that really caught me off guard and strike me a a tad ridiculous.
fb002a 1 year ago
I have the East German shovel and you really have to pick through them to find one that works smoothly, mine is smooth of course. I also have the Cold Steel model which I would prefer to carry over the East German but both tools are not for pack carry. I do like an metal trowel for backpacking to dig cat holes.

100-150$ USD though.
Enjoy.

PIcks come in VERY handy when you are attempting to dig in hard or compacted soil, or soil with a lot of rocks. The pick allows you to break up the soil enough to allow the spade to shovel the soil out.

well the german shovel and spetznaz shovel we also used as weapons and throw the sharp or jagged egdes at at a target it is fatal thats why its heavy and the pick can be used to detcet mines and entrench

@wepreferpie Ahhh, detecting mines with the pick. That's interesting. Thanks for sharing that.
envirosponsible 1 year ago 6
@envirosponsible Yes, it is genius to throw your CQ backup at someone. Probably less than a 50% chance of getting a hit, pot luck if the range is changing. But you never know... Detecting mines with a spike that large sounds game too, I would be worried about the pressure needed to drive such a large cross-section into the ground and the chance of that setting off a mine, not that I know much about mines. Ill leave the shovel fighting to other people, computer games are fighting enough for me.

I like your perspective on preparedness as a Canadian; the US tends towards gun preparedness more than might be necessary. A zombie apocalypse is only slightly likely, imho. One chance in three? ;-)
